Elementary Solutions: Bestiary Box Preview

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

While I enjoy painting miniatures, and I'm a fast painter, I'll be the first to admit that painting minis is a time-consuming art. GMing takes a lot of time all by itself and not everyone has the time or talent to make minis fit the evocative stories their imaginations conjure. Also, minis can be expensive. Even with the release of the Pathfinder Battles minis line, we realize that sometimes cash-strapped GMs needed a less-expensive way to make their game tables look as exciting as the stories in their head.

Enter pawns. These were first released with the Pathfinder Beginner Box, and once GMs everywhere got their hands on these easy and inexpensive ways to populate their Flip-Mats and Map Packs, we knew folks would want more.

That's why we started working on the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary Box. This set is chock-full of over 300 tokens from the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary ready to punch out, slide on a base, and challenge your player characters.

Utilizing much of the art from the Bestiary, we were confronted by many art challenges in populating this box. Some of the art from that book just didn't fit templates for the pawns. Other times we lacked art for some of the monsters presented in the book. What was the solution? More art!

Here's the first preview of some of the new art for the Bestiary Box—elementals. In the coming weeks we'll look at some more of the new art for this set. Until then, enjoy these elemental gems.

It's because of the three sizes, I imagine. Conjures up mental images of Pokemon with three stages of evolution.

Nice Art! I like.

These are cool. GRRR! I want this product but I want access to everything in the bestiary 1 in this format and in a format so I can make as many of the pawns of a given creature that I want.

I have already been scanning the pictures from the bestiary and using them as counters but the full-body pawns are very nice indeed.

Great, Tyler Walpole! The original art for elementals in Bestiary 1 was slightly underwhelming, now those are b-b-b-badass!

Grand Lodge

Have had this on pre-order since forever! Can't wait to get me grubby paws on it.

Silver Crusade

Oh Paizo. Why you so awesome?

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

This is awesome! Will it be released as a .PDF as well so I can print out goblin hordes?

The product description says that pre-orders for subscribers will get a PDF free, so I'd imagine that there will also be a PDF available. Great!

Oh man, I am so buying this thing.

Curious- is the 300 token count just individual monsters, or will there be multiple monster tokens for certain creatures?

I can't recall how many monsters were in the first Bestiary, but it would be nice to have more than one orc, token, for instance, so that you could represent at least a few of them in combat at the same time.

EDIT: Just noticed the breakdown of the tokens on the product page. It only goes to 256, so I'm guessing there are some duplicates, then.

For the price, I just can't justify the price of the plastics. But this, this I'm buying.

D'OH! So that's what the numbers in parentheses mean! :s

Excellent!

Will we be able to order the bases on their own?

The numbers of bases listed won't cut it for higher level campaigns.

I actually dig the Elemental art in the book but... NEW ART! WOO!

So far my players have talked me out of buying tokens for our table, but I'm thinking that might change by August.

Nice, I've always like Tyler Walpole's art!

So these are basically the same concept as Steve Jackson's old Cardboard Heroes? (Not a complaint, I have fond memories of those things.)

OMG Best elemental atwork EVER!

Good choice giving these new artwork cuz the previous artwork was really not my taste

I hope the following monsters from the box get new artwork too:

Winter Wolf/Worg (I hope you use winter wolf art for these)

Ankheg - Giant Ant - BARGHEST!! - Dire Bear - Bebilith - Beetles - Behir - Black Pudding - Bugbear - Cloaker - Couatl - Cyclops - BABAU!! - Balor - HEZROU!!! - MARILITH!! - Vrock (the colours are horrible) - Gelugon (less fat) - Devourer - Doppelganger - Duergar - ETTIN!! - Gargoyle - Cloud Giant - Fire Giant - Frost Giant - Storm Giant - Ice Golem - Hobgoblin - Werewolf - Giant Mantis - Mephit - MINOTAUR!! - Mohrg - Mummy - Dark Naga - NIGHTMARE!!!! (but without rider) - Remorhaz - Salamander - Shambling Mound - Violet Fungus - Will o Wisp - Xill - YELLOW MUSK CREEPER!!

Andoran

This is a brilliant idea! These are perfect for Pathfinder Society GMs who need minis for scenarios (as most of the monsters are found in the Bestiary).

Silver Crusade

Looking forward to my box of them at Gencon. Sometimes, being Paizo's slave is a good thing. I mean voluntary servant... Ah heck, who am I kidding. I love being Paizo's slave!

Different artwork for the multiple pawn creatures. So SO SO happy!

Saving time and money are both reasons I want to get this but there's also a third sort of savings they forgot to mention. This will save a lot of weight & space. Transporting a whole miniature collection to and from where you game is a hassle. Not everyone can run their games at home after all. With pawns you can fit a whole mess of monsters in one easily transportable box. :)
