Pathfinder Battles Preview: The Runelord's Apprentice
Friday, June 22, 2012
This week I want to show off another never-before-seen miniature from the upcoming Rise of the Runelords set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted fantasy figures. We've come very close to revealing the entire set, but we still have a small handful of beasties and bad-guys still to be revealed.
So let's start with a bang by revealing the one and only Khalib, apprentice to Runelord Karzoug himself! This high-level transmuter was once one of Karzoug's greatest apprentices, and indeed it was to be Khalib who would rescue Karzoug after the disaster that ended the runelords' empire in ancient days. That plan failed, and now Khalib has been freed from prison because the newly awakened Runelord needs all the help he can get against the player characters.
Khalib appears as a major villain in the last chapter of the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition campaign. He's packed with ancient magic and 10,000 years of bitterness, and when you put his beautiful miniature on the table, he won't soon be forgotten!
By my count, we have only a couple miniatures left to preview in the next few weeks. Tune in next week for another major villain, and then shortly thereafter for a look at what proved to be—by far—the most challenging miniature (production-wise) in the entire set. Can you guess what it is?
Vargouille, Giant Hermit Crab, Mammy Graul, Wet Papa Grazuul, shocker lizards, taiga giant, Barl Breakbones, The Black Monk, mammoths, the clockwork librarian, the iron archer -- wow, I hadn't realized how many there were. You'll need a RotRL Series 2 figure set.
The three I can think of that might represent different kinds of production challenges are the Hidden Beast, the Shining Child and Elyrium.

I like the mini overall. But yeah, agree with The Minis Maniac, there is something wrong with that face. It actually strikes me as a partially formed face, like the shapechangers (Founders) on DS9.
Thought it was intentional at first, as maybe Khalib was supposed to look like that. But when doing searches of other minis of him, his face looks pretty normal.
He's got a widow's peak and the camera angle is making the right hairline look like it's further back than it is. Also I think the angle is what's causing the right jawline/ear bulge. I'm not sure what the shadow on his forehead is, but it looks like we're just looking at a low-res camera artifact.
I'm confident this mini is kick-butt and the face is just fine. As low resolution as it is, zoom in and take a closer look.

Elyrium could potentially create some production challenges due to the number of paint steps versus size. There is a good Reaper version, so I am hoping for something different.
Mammoths are Huge, and I think we have seen all the Huge minis in the set.

I'm thinking
:
The Hidden Beast
. Hard to do given all the tentacles and fangs. Plus I really want this. Of course what I'd really love to see for the last unrevealed mini is
:
Hound of Tindalos!!!!
Since there are seveal in the adventure and no real proxy that could meet the gaunt creepiness.
Sadly Mammoths are huge and there is no mammoth - sad since I really would love to see one - along with a FROGEMOTH!
I've had to ban my players from reading the Paizo blog. :(
They've been doing these blogs since January or February and you're just getting around to complaining about spoilers? I think they just need to get these minis shipped ASAP!
Hi Cat-thulhu you could always use the ones produced by Fantasty Flight for their arkham horrow game - http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=2998 They have a prepainted Hound of Tindalus in there.

They didn't count as spoilers for me when they were showing minis from encounters we had already played. :)

Ah, gotcha! Meh, just email them a pic of the windego and caption it by saying "soon...soon..." and let them squirm.
