You've probably heard that Paizo is working with Goblinworks to produce Pathfinder Online, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. Goblinworks has been giving you snippets of our plans in the biweekly blog posts on goblinworks.com, and we've been getting your feedback on the Pathfinder Online messageboards here on paizo.com. Well, we're now ready to kick off the next phase of Pathfinder Online.
Today we announced a Kickstarter project to help us build the Pathfinder Online Technology Demo. Go take a look at the press release or visit the Kickstarter project page to find out what this Kickstarter is all about, and then come back here so I can share some details you'll want to know. Don’t worry, I’ll wait right here...
...Did you read it? Pretty darn cool, huh?
Goblinworks.com has its own blog today talking about the Kickstarter, so head over there when you're done here for more details on that. What I want to talk about here is the Thornkeep book!
Since the Pathfinder Online Technology Demo itself isn’t something that we can offer to Kickstarter patrons, we had to go outside the box for our Kickstarter rewards, and the Thornkeep book seemed like the perfect answer.
Thornkeep has a Pathfinder Online logo on the cover, but make no mistake—Paizo is handling this book just like any of our other Pathfinder products. It's set in the very same world of Golarion as our other roleplaying products, and contains 100% official Pathfinder campaign setting material for use with the Pathfinder RPG.
The first half of the 64-page Thornkeep book is a Pathfinder RPG sourcebook covering the town of Thornkeep and its surrounding area. Thornkeep is part of the River Kingdoms area, which is the setting for Pathfinder Online. (You could also drop Thornkeep into almost any wooded area in your own campaign setting.) As we mentioned in one of our earliest Pathfinder Online blog posts, Thornkeep is one of three starting locations for PCs in the MMO—it's the chaotic frontier town that Ryan dubbed our "hive of scum and villainy" (think a fantasy version of Deadwood). (You even helped us name Thornkeep in our first online poll!)
We thought it would be cool to allow folks to explore Thornkeep's various dark corners in their Pathfinder RPG sessions before Pathfinder Online is released. We will be using this book as our guide when we're building its digital equivalent. We're even going to have a small dungeon in this book that will map directly to the one featured in the Technology Demo. So not only will you be getting a guide to one of the towns in Pathfinder Online, but you'll also be getting the first look at how content from the RPG transitions to Pathfinder Online, as well as how content from the MMO might find its way to your gaming table!
Rich Baker, author of Thornkeep!
When we were looking for somebody to write the sourcebook material for us, we went to our good friend Rich Baker. This is Rich's first time working on Pathfinder, but he has been involved with classic D&D campaign settings from the Forgotten Realms to Birthright, and we figured it would be fun to see how he would approach Thornkeep! I've seen his partial turnovers already, and they're awesome!
So what about the second half of the book? That's going to be a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Pathfinder Online, including excerpts from our internal design document, plus design sketches and early artwork for the MMO, as well as essays from Goblinworks and Paizo team members designed to give you insight into the making of the MMO. Consider this a backstage pass to all of the goings-on at Goblinworks!
Of course, we couldn’t have a cool product like this without a Wayne Reynolds cover. The cover image you see here is a mock-up—Wayne should have the real Thornkeep cover done by PaizoCon, and we plan to unveil it at our banquet!
Thornkeep isn't the only Kickstarter reward, though. There are lots of fun rewards for folks at all levels of pledge support! You could even come to Paizo for a day, play a Pathfinder game with your dream Paizo GM, and have a four-hour dinner with your GM, Goblinworks CEO Ryan Dancey, and myself. Check out all of the Kickstarter rewards and help us get to the next step in the development of Pathfinder Online. We wouldn’t be here without you!
I just thought of it an exclusive set of goblin works dice!
I'd definitely be in on a set of them.
I also through this on the kickstarter page under one of the updates:
"If we're switching to a monetary goal, allowing high end backers the opportunity to feature in some way in the fiction is a sure way to attract fans. Perhaps allowing their characters to be immortalized as a minor NPC, allowing them to write a line of dialogue or to name a featuring NPC or location. Such opportunities were used in the Journey Quest kickstarter campaigns which we're great successes.
If the 436 $30 backers upped their contributions by $20 they would push us over $150,000 and they would get a book for the $20 with supercool art!
I'm actually surprised anyone bought in at the $30 level...I guess being a "Goblin Squad" member is important to some people. (447 people and counting apparently.)
We're obviously going to get our 4th dungeon level...but I don't have high hopes we'll see them in print...although having a full 64 pages of actual RPG material would be a much better reward than 32 pages of actual content and 32 pages of Goblinworks fluff.
This is my first kickstarter project donation as well. Pathfinder has been an improvement on the game I have loved for over 30 years. I feel that they would not chose lightly to have Goblinworks try to bring the world to life. I donated $50 with the hopes we would see the 64 page book. Now we are about 25k or 500 more $50 donations away from having a supersized print edition with some of the greatest writers in the business adding their own styles with additional levels. It is exciting to play a small part in this great project and I have my fingers crossed we can hit $175k total. If we can encourage our friends and gamer buddies to join us in our pledge and show a surge past the $150k mark I am sure we can get several people to jump into the ring with us or up to the $50 donation from the $15 if the supersized print edition looks promising.

Just doing some number crunching:
451 people made the $30 donation. For $20 more they could get a printed edition of Thornkeep. If they all decided they wanted to get this book it would put us up $9020 and about $15 k from our goal of $175.
For the 134 people that put in $5 for an extra $10 they could put us up $1340 and get a 100+ page mega PDF! Why wouldn't you spend $10 more to get that? If they decided to go for it and get the book that would be $6030 more dollars towards the goal.
619 people are getting the PDF already for their $15 donation. If they bumped up to a $50 donation that would be $21665!
As you can see we are not that far from getting the LESS than $25k we need to make the super sized 8.5"x11" book at over 100 pages a reality. It is important to bump up your donations sooner than later to help get those on the fence to smell the blood in the water and throw their support into the effort.
There is usually a surge in the last 48 hours! The closer we are the stronger the surge please join me in encouraging others to join the cause either by bumping up their existing donation or jumping into the ring with us for the first time!
On May 30th people were still saying we were not going to make it past $100k. Four days later we were over $150k. We have four days to make get less than $23k more to get a product that has excited me more than most over the past few years.
Think how awesome it is going to be in print. These writers that are now committed to creating their own levels of the dungeon are going to be competing against one another. They will come up with their best ideas because you know they will be directly compared to one another. A friendly duel of the pens has begun.
I actually debated on that last $5000 slot for a short bit, but a little too rich for my blood. Also for the fact you need to pay for airfare and lodging, as well.

Invite me as one of your guests and I will cover lodging and (domestic) airfare for you...

.
I would take you up on your offer, but again, the $5000 alone is still more than I can afford.
I boosted my pledge to $250 and also backed another game called Dead State (turn based zombie Rpg). I really want to see this project happen, so tired of themepark MMOs

"Goblins! What is best in life!"
"To crush your stretch goals! See them driven before you! And to hear the lamentation of the stretch goal writers!"
They have said the book will be available to purchase in the future, but they won't be undercutting the kickstarters. Also, I believe it is against Kickstarter T&C to use a second account, although don't quote me on that.
I don't want to start up another account, especially if it's against the rules.
I think I'll just hold off and hope Paizo does open the book up to sell the general public. I only want the book so I have something to use when playing the module, and keep my pledged book safe on my shelf.
The last 24 hours is shaping up to be as interesting as the first 24 hours :)
And to set the record straight, the physical books are not necessarily going to be for sale later. They are going to print a set amount, and if there are left-overs, they'll sell them. They might do a second printing, but I wouldn't count on it.
I seriously doubt there are any rules on Kickstarter to keep you from creating a second account.
