Continuing to Fill the Ranks

Monday, November 14, 2011

As we continue to expand Pathfinder Society to areas where players are looking for organization, it is important to me to find the right people to serve as ambassadors of the game, to present a positive light for new players, and to try to bring veteran players who have left back into the fold. Three more Venture-Captains have been chosen to fill those roles.

The Venture-Lieutenant program was established just a few weeks ago but we are already seeing the positive results from it. One of these is the promotion of Tracy Windeknecht. She served a short time under Mark Garringer when he was a Venture-Captain of Indiana. Since Mark has stepped down, I have chatted with Tracy and have utmost confidence she will pick up right where Mark left off and continue to grow Pathfinder Society in Indiana.

I am also excited to add two new areas to our Venture-Captain regions. The first is Virginia. Paul Rees has a unique region due to the high population of military in his area. Pathfinder Society is a perfect mesh for gaming interest due to deployment schedules and transfers. But Paul is not just taking care of the coast. He is there to help all of Virginia.

It also is exciting to add our third Canadian Venture-Captain, Brent Jans. Edmonton already has a strong core of Pathfinder Society players. In truth, Brent and several other people were already doing a terrific job organizing Pathfinder Society in that area. After talking with Brent, and hearing some of his ideas, I am excited to see how much more Pathfinder Society can grow in this area of Canada.

In addition to the three Venture-Captains above, we have added the following Venture-Lieutenants to help some of our current Venture-Captains reach out to areas in their regions that are either too far away to cover on a regular basis or where there are too many locations in a region to cover at all. They include the following:

Chicago – Brad Ruby
Connecticut/New York – William Wadhams
Los Angeles – Brian Darnell
Minnesota – Andrew Christian
New York/New Jersey – David Santana
New York/New Jersey – Vincent Colon-Roine
San Francisco – Joshua Archer
United Kingdom – Rob Silk
Vermont – Myles Crocker
Washington D.C. – Bruce Chang

We are still in need of additional Venture-Captains in some regions and you can find the list right here. If you’re interested in applying, please contact me after reviewing the application process in the previous link.

Welcome aboard to all my new captains and lieutenants!

It good to see that currently no less than 11 of my gaming friends have infiltrated the ranks of the Pathfinder leadership.

Congrats to all involved! A word of caution, however, that "Brady Ruby" fellow is one shifty cat. Simply cannot be trusted. "BRAD Ruby", now there's a fellow I can stand behind, let me tell you!

Might I suggest that there be a list of all venture captains on the Pathfinder Society page? I have no idea if there's a venture captain for my area, and it would be kind of cool to find out. :)

Congrats to each of the new Captains and Lieutenants, and especially to our own Brad Ruby!

There's one in the most recent guide to organized play.

I just wanted a link on the main page. :) Thanks, though!

(The answer is that there's no venture captain for my region, btw.)

Not yet, though I am actively recruiting in the Vancouver and BC area. I have even gone so far as to drive up to Vancouver on a Saturday and introduce myself to 6 of the 7 stores I am aware of. If you know anyone interested in serving in the role of VC for that area, please have them apply.

I'd like a version that has my Lodge corrected - Serbia still doesn't have a Lodge, and mine is nicely written beside my name (and the map is missing Slovenia)

But yes, congratulations to the newly appointed people :D

Not to change the subject but are we gonna get previews from the Bestiary 3 anytime soon?

I saw a preview the other day for a negative energy cloud monster, and a carnivorous plant monster at my FLGS in a trade magazine.

Ha! It's Brent, actually, though you aren't the first person to make that mistake. And oddly, my birth certificate does show my last name as having an apostrophe (Jan's). Someday Jan will claim me as hers...

Looking forward to working with you and Neil; we need to plan out the Great Canadian Pathfinder Moot real soon!

I cannot express enough how much I would love to see a PFS Region hashed out closer to my region. I'm starting to work with a VC from NY in finding gamers here in S. Jersey. I know all things is good time, but from my aspect, the sooner the better.

Congrats to the New VCs and VLs!

I look forward to working with everyone, and maybe one day get my State a full VC.

What qualifies a preview as "Stealthed"? I ask because I know my perception checks IRL are pretty awful.

I'm going to guess anything not announced as a preview on the site/blog (which would also include the B3 monsters in the PFS scenarios the past few months)

I am definitely going to Gen Con this year. Did the drive out from Edmonton in 2010, which was interesting fun (especially when crossing back to Canada with resin steampunk gun replicas).

I'll keep the drive in mind. Funds allowing, I wouldn't mind just flying but I'll have to play that by ear.

Heh heh ...

I figured someone would say that :)

I've actually never played a Pathfinder Society game and really know little about it, beyond what I've read here on the message boards. That's kind of the point - I'd like to check Pathfinder Society gaming out to see if I like it, but there does not seem to be any around that I can find.

Actually having a Venture Caption in PA (really, it's a big state - we should have two, one for the western half and one for the eastern half) would probably help.

As for volunteering, it'd be kind of a HUGE leap for the guy that is at this point really just interested in learning a bit more about Pathfinder Society (and has never actually played) to become a Venture Caption :)

Ahhh, I get you. Are you on the Pittsburgh or Philly side? I'm sure we can steer your towards the closest VC/VL who can work you you to get something going in your area even with a lack of volunteer leadership. Do you have a game store in your area? If not, how about a bookstore, or library, or perhaps a grocery/department store with a cafeteria area? Heck, you could even organize a game at your house, but without knowing the other players, I can see wanting to play it safe.

Honestly, if you like/d Living City, Living Greyhawk, Living Forgotten Realms, or any other organized play system, you will more than likely enjoy PFS. And if you are familiar with PFRPG already, there isn't much to learn.

Closer to Philadelphia (Harrisburg, actually)

I have a few Pathfinder home games I play in currently. I was just hoping to maybe sit in on a PS game or two to see what is about and then maybe give it a try.

I am definately very familiar with the Pathfinder RPG :) The problem is I have no experience with any kind of organized play - I'm aware in general terms of what Living City, Living Greyhawk and Living Forgotten Realms are but I've never played any myself. My games have always been home games.

Oh well, I'll just keep my eyes open - sooner or later I'm sure PA will get a Venture Captian or two and then hopefully I'll start to see more PS activity. :)
