Special Charity Event Ends Today!

Thursday, April 7, 2011

I'd like to take a moment to remind folks about the Japan Quake and Tsunami Relief Auction we started last week. For those of you that don't remember, last Thursday we announced that Paizo would be auctioning off the Wayne Reynolds original painting of Nakayama Hayato, the iconic samurai found in Ultimate Combat, our 256-page hardcover release for Gen Con 2011 and three copies each of a special edition of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook and Pathfinder RPG Bestiary. There are only a few hours left in these auctions so please visit the Paizo eBay storefront before 10 a.m. PDT to take part in this special charity event!

And great job for a good cause Paizo guys and gals.

How much were the winning bids?

The bids ranged from $400 to a little over $1300 for a grand total of $4016. Thanks Paizoians!

I think you missed one of the Bestiary's Hyrum.

Brofists all around to the bidders.

I mean this as no offense. However, I think that while this is a good idea, I believe that there are better ways of fund raising.

I really like the way that DriveThruRPG does their $10/$20 PDF kits. I'm also a fan of the "Pay full price, but we give XX% to charity" so long as you give advance notice. Or, the "give $10 to help out" button. Auctions only give a few people the chance to do good. The other people bidding could do much greater good that way. How much would have been raised if everyone that bid would have had a contribution?

Again, when it comes to charity, any amount helps!

We are also selling signed Core Rulebooks and donating the proceeds to the Red Cross. Is that more like what you would like to see?

While I ordered a signed copy of the Core Rulebook, I think what tdewitt274 might have been saying, is that the cost of the items put up for auction (and the signed Core Rulebook as well) are a little cost prohibitive for many people given the economy...

And that had you offered something within your "normal" price range with a certain amount (or all) of the profits going to charity, that might have let more people who were willing to give but couldn't due to the high cost involved, a chance to do so...

At least that's how I read his post...

People are also able to make direct donations as well ;)

Ross, Digitalelf is on track to my original thought. I didn't see the additional sale of the signed core rulebooks. But DE does bring up another good point of price. The $150 price point is still pretty high.

John, yes, this is also true. Sadly, the extra "incentive" helps the donation process. It helps bring out the "warm fuzzy" in people.

Again, don't get me wrong. Any help is appreciated by those in need and I'm not trying to undermine what Paizo is doing. That fact that they are doing it is great!

The main reason why we did this charity event the way we did was because Wayne came to us with the Samurai artwork and said that he would like us to auction it off for the Japan relief. We then decided that if we are going to auction something off, that we might as well auction a few things off. And then the idea for the signed but not auctioned books came. Could we have done something where we sold Paizo PDFs at 30% off and put the money towards the charity have worked? Sure. Could we have gathered a bunch of third party PF publishers and put together a cool bundle for charity? Yep. Maybe we will do those in the future when another great cause shows up. Basically, Wayne got us on the auction track with his generous donation of the artwork and we just went with the flow. :)

Thanks to everyone who bid on the artwork. Thanks to paizo for auctioning the artwork. And thanks to everyone who looked at the auction, it raised awareness to the plight of the people who have lost so much.
