Golarion Day: Subdomains for Everyone!

Thursday, February 17, 2010

The Advanced Player's Guide introduced a new concept for clerics—subdomains. It then went on to list subdomains available for the core 20 deities. Which is fine and good, if you happen to worship one of those deities. But what if you worship Besmara? Or Zura? Or the Lost Prince? Or Ymeri?

This post answers those questions. Listed below are the subdomains available for all of the other deities who are mentioned by name in the upcoming Inner Sea World Guide. Keen-eyed scholars of Golarion lore will note that there are even more deities beyond the ones I'm listing below, but in an attempt to keep this blog post from getting too huge, I'm limiting it to JUST the additional deities we mention in The Inner Sea World Guide. That way this post also serves as a sort of stealth preview for that book! If there's another deity from another book who you JUST HAVE to know the subdomains for, post a request in this blog's messageboard section below and I'll answer them as I get the chance.

Oh... hmm. Art. Yeah. Ummm... since this blog post is something of a preview of The Inner Sea World Guide, and since she was once a demigod herself (although not anymore; she lost that status when she died and got turned into a lich), here's Arazni, the Harlot Queen of Geb!

Any plans to put the full list (minus dead gods and former deities, of course) of subdomains in a print product ever?

It would be handy to have.

No plans right now. Maybe someday.

Sorry if this is too much of a necro, but I was wondering if there are Subdomains for the Empyreal Lords of the Magnimar Mystery Cults, specifically Ylimancha? Thank you.

Paizo Employee Creative Director

No subdomains yet.

Let me fix that.

Ashava: Ancestors, Azata, Moon*, Night

Soralyon: Construct, Caves, Defense, Purity**

Ylimancha: Agathion, Feather, Oceans, Wind

*See Dragon Empires Gazetteer.

**If we ever do these in print, I suspcect we'll actaully buid a new subdomain for Soralyon and a few others that'd be an actual Angel subdomain, which would replace one of these four options (likely Caves).

What about Magrim? Got any domains/subdomains for him?

Paizo Employee Creative Director

Margrim's a weird case. He doesn't seem to have enough domains in the first place, so before I'd assign his subdomains, I'd want to ensure he matches up to the standard of having 4 or 5 domains in the first place, depending on if he were a demigod or an actual fullfledged deity.

I know Jezelda was mentioned as having the Deception, Demon, Fur, and Night subdomains, but with the release of the Moon subdomain, would any of the former ones be replaced?

Probably Night.

Hi James Jacobs, I am a new member of this site, so I'm writing in this topic only at this time. Can you help me defining Trudd (the strenght dwarven deity) subdomains? Thank you so much

SO... one of the weird things about Trudd from Gods and Magic is that we only gave him 2 domains. That's an error. He should have four. I would PROBABLY adjust his domains as follows:

Domains: Good, Nobility, Protection, Strength

Subdomains: Agathion, Defense, Martyr, Resolve

Gods and Magic was a very nice product and much more useful than the section included in the Inner Sea Guide. Hope a revised Gods and Magic (perhaps with subdomains) comes out.

Since the deities aren't on the PRD and most folks I encounter don't buy the 3.5 stuff anymore, a lot of the G&M info has sort of disappeared.

BTW, Arazni has a ton of untapped potential. Like, say, an adventure to recover a lost artifact that contains one of her organs. Striking her with it will grant her true death.

Plenty to work with regarding Arazni and the Knights of Ozem.

Thank you James Jacobs!

Hi, JJ.

Lorthact can grant his worshippers access to the following domains: Evil, Law, Magic, and Trickery.

What would his granted subdomains be?

YAY! Thanks!

I really don't like how the dwarf pantheon was handled in the older materials, with all dwarf clerics only allowed to worship Torag but able to "loan" domains from other gods - who all got only two or three domains - for one day by performing a ritual. Flavorful, sure, but annoying.

Ok I think this is the proper place to ask this question so for the 3rd time here it goes!

What would Isph-Aun-Vuln's subdomain's be?

Also are their any plans to add more subdomains in the near future like ones for other animals (like a fins sub in either water or animal) or music for charm?

That's not something we've maintained. At some point, in some future product, if and when we re-present the lesser dwarven deities, they'll be given full domain access.

We added the Moon subdomain in Dragon Empires. We may add a few more subdomains in the future as the need arises, but we've got no specific plans to do so yet.

Before we'd publish qlippoth lord subdomains, we would invent a new Qlippoth subdomian. Not sure what this would be, and this isn't the right place to design it. That said...

Isph-Aun-Vuln's subdomains are:

Cloud, Deception, Qlippoth, Wind

Challenge accepted. Now is it safe to assume that the qlippoth sub will come out of evil and chaos then?

Hi James Jacobs, like someone already wrote, I would like to ask you about Magrim. Thank you

Paizo Employee Creative Director

Magrim's got the same problem the other dwarf deities have: Domain shortage.

His domains should probably be Law, Earth, Repose, and Rune.

His subdomains should thus probably be: Ancestors, Inevitable, Souls, Wards

Ok, thak you!

The Qlippoth subdomain notwithstanding/forthcoming, what would Yamasoth's other three subdomains be?

Shaun Hocking wrote:

Yamasoth: Caves, Metal, Qlippoth, Transformation

Transformation would be a new subdomain of Chaos or maybe Trickery.

Will any Inner Sea worshiped Good-aligned deities (domain-granters?) ever have Darkness as a domain? I recall that Tsukiyo has it, which is really cool.

Probably some day, although the problem is that the Darkness domain allows you to summon shadows, which comes pretty close to being an evil spell... it's certainly a spell that non-evil deities and spellcasters would generally have trouble with. But we'll see...

The Shadowdancer creates precedent for non-evil shadows, so one could easily houserule that a shadow summoned through the Darkness domain shares the alignment of the god granting that Domain. (Which could mean that a LN or NG cleric of Tsukiyo might find himself summoning LG shadows.)

Hmm, if only there were some sort of a part-domain, almost a "sub-domain", if you will, that removed that spell in favor of another to make it more palatable for good deities and characters...

Nah, that's just a silly idea.

Could take a page from Pharasma, and have this deity use a different spell for that level. Maybe dream, or something more tailored to it.

What subdomains would the clerics of the "orc cults" (from Orcs of Golarion) have access to? Their allowed domains are: Chaos, Destruction, Evil, Fire, Strength, and War.

First off... that's too many domains. Nothing should grant six domains, and deities are the only ones who can grant 5. Since the orc cults are most likely demigods, they should only grant 4 domains, and they should be:

Orc Cult Domains: Destruction, Fire, Strength, War

Orc Cult Subdomains: Blood, Catastrophe, Ferocity, Rage

James, isn't that one subdomain too few? The number of subdomains granted is usually equal to the number of domains plus one.

But if "Orc Cults" represents some number of orc demigods greater than one, surely the wider domain spread is meant to represent some variance in the individual gods' domain packages? So any one cultist priest would only be able to choose from four, but three or four cultists of different demigods might boast five different domains between them?

"Orc Cults" is kind of the same catch-all group that the "Great Old Ones" are lumped into on page 235 of the Inner Sea World Guide. Obviously, there are individual entities in that group. If you want to use specific deities and demigods like Cthulhu or Hastur or Yog-Sothoth, you should use them—there was no room in Inner Sea World Guide to list them all, but we DID list them in Pathfinder #46. If you use the specific deities from that book, then you shouldn't use the Great Old Ones group from Inner Sea World Guide.

Same goes for the Orc Cults. If you use the specific deities that exist in that collection, you should use those deities and throw out the generic cover "orc cults" entirely.

Also, I'm surprised you excised the alignment domains for them; I'm sure a lot of clerics would love for their deities to shuck the alignment domains and pick up other ones.

I excised the alignment domains because they're not a specific deity, and by excising those domains I set the grouping up as something kind of weird and unusual.

Fair enough.
