Woot! I like it, I love it, I want it!

Isn't this just the mock-up that's been on the site for months, or do I need to refresh my image cache?

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber)

I see it.

Hence the drool.

Can't wait for the minis.

There is a new image for the cover that was put up today. If you don't see something that goes snicker snack, then you need to refresh your image cache.

As yes it was the image catch.

If you can see a Dragon in chains, clear your cache. You should be seeing a Protean (Snake like outsider)

Hey, Jason/Lisa/SKR...
Is it too late to officially petition for a listing and/or statblock for the much touted "Heavy Horse?" There is quite a bit of confusion regarding how this animal would be treated for purposes of being an animal companion, much less other in-eloquence's with crunching what is quite possibly the most oft replaced npc in games.

I think the Bestiary 2 would be a PERFECT home for such a handy little equine.

Would a please be enough? How about a autographed lithograph showing in vivid detail the minute detail of Chester the Cheetah?

Themetricsystem wrote:

Unfortunately yes, this book is already wrapping up its development. We'll definitely keep such animal friend friendly elements in mind for future projects, though.

Amazing cover, as always. I can definitely pick out a Protean and what I guess is a Jabberwock. I think the small things are gremlins.

And if that is indeed the Jabberwock on the cover, it looks GREAT. Scary, yet totally evocative of prior representations of it, including the cheesy versions.

(Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber)

Jabberwock! Of course!

Aswell as (left to right) a pugawampi, vexgit and jinkin gremlin!

Then a crownless keketar protean! In the Maelstrom! Which has now been illustrated by WAR on two covers!

Beautiful!

For someone who has never had to deal with this problem: How do I refresh my image cashe?

Jabberwock!!

Paizo (Pathfinder) for the win . . . again.

Bwahahhahahahahaha! (evil DM grin here)

Does this mean we'll get a Reaper Jabberwocky? That way I can put the Iron Wind Metals one next to the Reaper one and go, "boo!" to my players (and have a battle map set up showing a checkerboard field!).

Twisted... twisted... And to think I just picked up the Malifaux Seamus, the Mad Hatter recently. (joy!) And just last night I told my players I don't have Pugwampi statistics...

>insert more evil laughter<
Thank you all!

Frabjoyous day!

As over as I generally am of WAR art, the subject matter gives this one +100 points for coolness!

Hmm, I see it listing new dragon types.

I wonder, will these be subtypes (as they've already gone through all the metallic and chromatic dragons from the SRD)?

Or, are we going to see additional Chromatics and Metallics (Brown, Orange, Yellow, Platinum, Steel, Chrome)?

Or are we looking at some neutrals for a change? I really kind of liked the gem dragons (I know, not OGL) and the other dragons from the Draconomicon (celestial and infernal, etc).

Or are we going to see the eastern dragons revealed? As much as I would like to see them, I think those would best be reserved for an eastern book, along with Samurai and Ninja's and other eastern flavor fluff.

I like me some proteans. Awesome.

Hmmm, I recognaize all of those cover beasties from AP beasiaries... does this mean we will get a PFRPG version of all these monster covers from the past? (up until Legacy Of Fire?)

Awesome cover! I hope there will be a free Bestiary 2 Preview (a PDF like we got when the Bestiary was coming out) so that I can terrorize my players with new monsters. :)

And atop the rocky promont'ry the Jabberwock was seen,
His screech so furious as all that'd been,
He'd left the borogroves with skin still green,
And found some friends t'travel with him.

Said the tale, "Beware! Take care!"
As disregarded as th'owner of the voice.
"--Those claws! His teeth! It'll not play fair!"
But the travelers had made their choice.

The sword's hand-- a drinking man
Did scoff and laugh anew.
His rough companion-- scarred and tan,
The same, she did too.

Lamenting, spoke the voice: "Listen! This I beg!"
"These fey whims-- your end you chase--"
Yet the voice ickled off at the sight of leg.
Dark, fair, silver of hair-- an unseen beauty in this place.

A beseeching gripe, pace hastening,
"They never listen.." a glare as she followed after.
The Jabberwock and more they were set on facing,
Alas, their result lies in another chapter.

I think the understanding is a lot, but not all. there's definately one monster that was done under a special liscence that won't be making the jump, and it's been specifically said that Treerazer is the only creature pictured in the core rulebook that won't be in either this or the first volume.

I also expect unique beings (so the God's heralds and Achaekek) probably won't make it either.

Asgetrion - I ewxpect not on the free PDF- my understanding is that this Bestiary will not be considered core as the first one was, so if a monster is used in a Paizo product, it would be fully stated. Since the point of the preview was to give that pages that you would want to reference before the Bestiary came out, they probably won't be needed.

The Coerle (sp?) won't be appearing, it's the one under license.

The Deep Crow is another licensed monster that won't see reprinting,

Lord Snow wrote:

Mmmmmm, not quite. Only the gremlins appeared in a Pathfinder AP Bestiary, with the keketar protean coming from the Great Beyond, the the jabberwock being wholly "new." I won't get into what percentage of the book is new monsters and what percentage are updates, mainly because I don't recall the statistics off the top of my head and because there are so many monsters taken from old 3.0 and 3.5 products - both ours and open sources - and directly inspired by folklore and mythology that the definition of "new" gets really muddy. That being said, the number of monsters that have not seen print in Paizo products prior to the Bestiary 2, especially planar monsters, is significant.

Asgetrion wrote:

The Preview Bestiary was a Free RPG offering for 2009. Since then, with our game's release, we've started leaning more of in the direction of giving stores and Free RPG Day participants something they can actually sit down and play that day. So, as of right now at least, we don't have plans to do a Preview Bestiary 2 product.

Also, just because I'm kind of dancing around how awesome this book is going to be:

"This book is going to be Awesome!"
~Wes Schneider, in reference to Bestiary 2, July 31st 2010

First up, bring on the HIGH CR THREATS. The Bestiary gives you monsters of all CRs, but it's weighted toward all the mooks and animals and fodder monsters you'll need in near every game you'll play. With those out of the way, Bestiary 2 can give you what's beyond that. We're talking menaces from the planes - like numerous updated and expanded planar "families" - threats for mid and high level play, and CR 20+ terrors. This isn't saying there's not dozens and dozens of low CR creatures, the book is totally built to give GMs running games of any level new stuff to use, but there's going to be more CR 10+ monsters then were in the original Bestiary.

Next, PLANAR MADNESS. Like demons and devils? We've got more of those. Want to see daemons, finally? The whole family's in here with a new Paizo-brand spin. Want an guardian angel? Check out familiars for every planar race - you're not limited to essentially just imps and quasits anymore. Think you know what a protean or qlippoth is? Here's you chance to meet them face-to-terrible-face. And that's just the families, there's also rasts, titans (made cool), jyoti, and tons more.

Also, STUFF FOR YOUR CHARACTER. Did I mention familiars for every planar family? Need an inevitable, aeon, protean, agathon, daemon, or qlippoth in your pocket? They're yours. Need new mounts, animal companions, or things for your druid to turn into? New need things for your necromancer or alchemist to whip up in the lab? They're all in here.

Plus new dragons (who aren't the azi), elementals, enemies, allies, and tons more. Plus extensive references, random encounter generators, utility charts, and more in the back. This is easily the book I've gotten most excited about since the Core Rulebook. It's going to be awesome!

Yes, Wes, and I'm super hyped up for it too (more so now that the APG is out), the question is though: is it even sent off to the printers yet?

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

I SO want to throw jabberwock against my players *evil grin*

So is the Beastiary 2 Jabberwock going to be the "Greater" or "True" one? because the "Lesser Jabberwock" is in Sound of a Thousand Screams - and he is no small pet... so which CR are we talking here? 'cause I never seen anything go higher than 27 (Gold Dragon).

Me want some epic Carol :)

Something like that. Just make sure you bring your vorpal sword. ^_~

Nope, still in layout. It's actually right on schedule.

Pfffh, we're headed to Gen Con this week, plenty of opportunity to get more, if you know what I mean. ('Cause I don't.) :P

Again, though, unlikely, but we'll see what we can do.

Actually the jabberWock has a neck, it's simlply hidden by the "Beastiary 2" heading.

Absolutely! We picked up a FEW monsters from Pathfinder APs for the first Bestiary (such as the boggard, the shaitan, and the goblin dog, plus a few others), but for Bestairy 2, a LOT of monsters from the APs will be included. I'm not sure if these numbers stayed the same since I first ran them last year when we first built this book's initial monster list, but it was something like this:

50% monsters picked up from Pathfinder Adventure Paths/monsters picked up from 3.5 3rd party books (such as Tome of Horrors or Book of Fiends)

25% monsters from the SRD that we weren't able to fit in the first Bestiary

25% brand new monsters

The reason for that is that we'll be including an updated Treerazer in the monster chapter of the World Guide. Because he's so tied in with Golarion that presenting him as a generic monster in the Bestiary 2 would do him a disservice.

The jabberwock in this book is simply called a "Jabberwock." No greater or true or anything. And he's currently at CR 23.

And it's worth pointing out, I suppose, that in Pathfinder, the highest CR we've really done is 25, for the tarrasque. The highest CR a gold dragon can get in Pathfinder (without "cheating" by adding class levels, HD, or templates) is CR 23.

For Pathfinder, we're really trying to limit the upper end of baseline monster to CR 25, because beyond that things go too far out of what the current game is designed to handle.
