Making the Scene

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

One of the neat peripheral elements of the GameMastery Guide—aside from 300+ pages of hardcore GM focused tools and rules—are new chapter openers. You know, the big pictures with the little stories next to them that start every section of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook. Those. Our own Fiction Editor James Sutter is tackling these, and there's something really cool about finally getting a bit of a story to go along with some of the coolest scenes in the Pathfinder cosmology. For example, here's Chapter 6's opener, along with its companion, the cover to The Great Beyond.

"Sing the songs with us, O bastard prince!" The keketar's voice was high, euphoric. Several of the words formed shapes in the air, one turning to a centipede that writhed as it drifted away.

"Join us in the dance and we will remake you/make you so beautiful. We will sing the stars from the sky/sea."

"I'll pass," Seltyiel grunted. Beneath them, the islet was already crumbling. It wouldn't last another minute under the keketar's influence.

The hell with it. He'd only get one shot anyway. Summoning the last of his magic, Seltyiel leapt backward, out into empty space..."

And expect 8 more just like this in the upcoming GameMastery Guide!

Guy in a turban

Awesome! So damn awesome! Centipede words! Wow!

And it makes Seltyiel seem gruffly bad-ass! Nice!

*my words turn into an assortment of fruit*!

The Manyfaced One

I loved these vignettes in the Core Rulebook, and I think they serve as an inspiration and set the mood nicely for both to GMs and players!
I'm glad GMG will have them, too, and this one is right on par with the others -- bravo, Mr. Sutter, bravo! :)

Psionic

Proteons are awesome and the wording here is perfect for them. I agree, the vignettes in the core book are great.

Ahh, a spotlight on my favorite bastard iconic/character.

How lovely/wunderbar.

Nine chapters then? : )

Is there a plan for an adventure path set in the outer Planes?
PS: Heck you even have Baur in your roster...

+1 These are fantastic in the Core book and I'm glad to see them being used again.

Best Paizo artwork ever.

Osirion Majuba (Paizo Charter Superscriber)

Two thumbs up, to this one and using them again!

Not quite yet. With only two APs a year there's still plenty of cool places we want to visit on Golarion before we move off Golarion (for more than a brief foray into a demiplane or the City of Brass for an adventure - Legacy of Fire doing the most planes hopping to date). Down the road, I'm sure we will, but we can already see the road for a long ways and its not in sight yet.

I read 'keketar' as 'keletar'. Had flashbacks to my time on the Megatokyo forums...

Could be worse, he could be Brock Samson.

Rast

Dude, that's made of win. *glee*

It's so freaky cool to have other folks make awesome stuff around or with something you created. And damn if that vignette doesn't capture a keketar's attitude perfectly.

Hehehe

Come sing with us sing with us dance the rapture of creation and destruction all the same all the same little mortal *pupils cross-dilate*

The original is hanging above my mantle :D

I like the idea of the vignettes but I have to say I don't like the art. Wayne Reynolds is very talented but his style just doesn't fit my idea of fantasy art, he seems too Manga/Anime inspired for me. Any chance of returning to the more classic style of fantasy art?

Goes to show you that for every person who likes something, someone else dislikes it just as much :)

And about the original, I'm jealous - though I do have the original for Cindermaw from PF10: A History of Ashes :)

If you mean women wearing satin blouses and vests with giant perms, then probably not. :)

We're really pleased with the work Wayne has been providing for Pathfinder since the very start, and we will continue to use his art as long as he is willing to continue making it for us.

These vignettes were one of my favorite elements of the Core Rulebook and I can't wait to see them in the GMG and APG!

That said, we've already seen this particular image without text and logos. Blog art is best when it's not repeats :-(

Yes, I'm hard to please.

Erik Mona

Almost annoyingly so, at times. :)

As part of the grand blog police triumvate, I think we can give them a pass on this one.

Sean K Reynolds

Quick, someone Photoshop Mark's severed head into the art, that'll satisfy the Need For New. ;)

One of the things that I'm loving about the art in Pathfinder is that while different artists do have their own unique style, they also seem to have similar styles as well, to the point that something can look Pathfinder-y.

Indeed, m'baron, our very own Seltyiel -- I'm so proud of him! A true Chelaxian and a fervent follower of Asmodeus... *sigh*, I wish more of the iconics would embrace those heroic qualities!

EDIT: For what it's worth, I love Wayne's art -- in my opinion he has done his best pieces for Paizo, and along with Sarah created a truly stunning look for the whole Pathfinder line. :)

Cool, I liked those bits in the core rule book, and that particular piece of art is damn fine!

You had the courage of our convictions. I so wanted to complain, but didn't.
