I used the outpost side of the map for a really long session involving role playing rather than combat. If you have another map with grass and a road, you could have a pretty decent siege encounter. GameMastery continues to provide DMs with great tools for whatever edition of the game you play.
The Bandit Outpost is another solid addition to the Flip-Mat product line.
One side is a nicely rendered walled fort with a stable and some buildings inside. The other is mostly empty grassland with a trail that fades out in the center of the mat.
One cool thing I noticed, that I'm not sure if it was intentional... If you have the mat on the grassy trail side, and you fold the gate part of the fort side over, it looks like the trail leads up to the gate.
I think this is a very usable Flip-Mat. The grassy trail side is good for pretty much any outdoors battle, and the outpost can represent many different things.
Also of note... This flip-mat (outpost side)is featured in the first installment of the Kingmaker adventure path.
I'm gonna go the other way -- I really like flip mats with one side mostly blank except for the generic terrain. I don't always want the same old same old, and the blank side allows me to customize to a greater degree.
The actual outpost is pretty handy and will see use in my games without a doubt.
Another only-one-side-is-good map....
One side is good and the other side is just empty terrain.
They need more ARTWORK on the "just empty terrain" sides.
This could have used a cave, fallen trees, a small trail, a ring of boulders, a hut, a pit, a pond, quicksand/mudpit, campfire, a gazebo, ruins, rocky outcropping....
Here is another surefire idea: they could put a dungeon on the back. Dungeons are ALWAYS useful.
