Platinum (aka 'WOOHOO!') aspect: Nice details. An over-turned wine glass on the bar. Cracks in the floor tile. Bundle of sticks by the fireplace. Some ham in the store room. Spiffy rug for the owner's boudoir.

Gold (aka 'Why You Buy') aspect: Instant full-color setup. This kicks the crap out of drawing it out yourself onto a pad of paper.

Electrum (aka 'Cool But Weird') aspect: Secret meeting room really not-so-secret; whats with the windows?

Silver (aka 'The Eh') aspect: 14 rooms on the 2nd floor, i.e. the inn part, are basically the same. Another one has the bed moved sideways and then there are 2 rooms with Queen beds. Yaye! :P Details fall through here and all 17 are pretty much nondescript. But it can get the job done.

Copper (aka 'Waste of Space'} aspect: Weird white pools in one corner of a store room. Followed closely by the 'mysterious' clump of rocks on the reverse side.

Gem Idea: Make more. How cool would it be to have several different versions of a Flip-Mat tavern to choose from?

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Excellent Map
Reviewer: Cato Novus

Gah! Once again my review has been eaten!

Long story short, I like this map, a lot. The main room is a little distracting to me because there are no posts to support the second floor, as opposed to the other side, where there are lots of walls to justify not having support beams. The addition of an open field is also useful. I hope my group gets to make a lot of use of it.

Although this will not replace my regular battle mat, the tavern displayed and the smaller size will have immediate and regular use in my D&D gameplay.

If you need a quick and simple method of portraying tavern encounters but want to have some great visual aid in the presentation, this is for you!

It folds up easily and stores in my D&D Accessories binder right near the Combat Pad!

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Nice maps, poorly packaged
Reviewer: bshugg

I bought a pair of steel squire maps as the graphics looked impressive. They ended up being impressive and I couldn't wait to use it in my next gaming session. Then I unfolded the maps and the edges began cracking from where the product was creased to fit in an 8 x11 shape. The cracks soak up marker leaving them smudged and ruin the look of them after a few drawings.

These maps would be a lot nicer if they came rolled in tubes or similar. Maybe at GenCon they will have flat ones for sale. If so I would pick up the lot.

HI Paizo folks,

Just a question, the product description says "The Flip side features rolling grassland and a mysterious clump of rocks". But you can't really see it on the product picture.

Sorry to say, but it sounds to me like "the flip side is empty but colored green". Could you say a bit more about this?

Is this really just featureless grass with one square of stone? Or is there more to the flip side than that?

Hey Bocklin:

I take it you have never bought a flip mat before. :) No worries. All flip mats come with one side that is printed with a cool map-type piece of art. This is the side that the harried DM who needs a tavern, or town square, or forest path, or pre-made dungeon uses. The other side of all of these flip mats is a textured blank side that the DM can use like a battlemat. The only difference between the flip mat and the battlemat (besides the fact that you can use any type of marker and not have it stick forever) is that the flipmat has the textured back. In my experience, I use the flip side when I have an encounter that takes place in that type of terrain and I draw it out by hand like I normally would on my battlemat.

Hi Lisa,

I never bought such a product, indeed. It's much clearer now!

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply.

There is a cluster of stones in one of the corners of the flip side, and some spots throughout the area that suggest the grassland is, at least in some places, a paved area that's almost completely overgrown. You can see these features if you click the product's picture and look at the large photo.
