So is the race and other monster races playable in PFS or just core races for now?? Main reason is I wanna play a Tiefling with the +2 bonus to CHA alternative that was released at one point. Thanks

Still core, no indication this will change any time soon.

That said, you can get Boons that allow other races, but I am still trying to find one (I'm an Aasimar fanboy)

Yeah I like Aasimars as well...maybe Ultimate Races will give us some kind of diversity with our races for PFS. Guess I will have to move on from my Demonic Pally Gunslinger for the moment.

3/5

From what I understand, even after the ARG comes out, the core races will still be the only races available without a boon.

You can get boons for playing/GMing PFS games at Paizo-endorsed conventions. If you have a Venture Captain/Lieutenant in your area, talk to them about getting some PFS tables at an upcoming convention near you (it doesn't have to be a gaming con specifically, if there is enough interest you could set up some tables at a comic or anime convention.)

3/5

Doesn't even have to be a pre-existing convention. All you need is 15 tables of PFS to ask for special con-boons. All you really need is a VC nearby.

Its great that PFS lowers the barrier to this sort of thing, it goes a long way to reducing the fact that there are two classes of players.

4/5 5/55/55/55/5

We have a great PFS set up in our city, excellent in fact - well run events in good venues supported by an active player base. Weekly tables being run and great conventions several times a year...

Sadly the regular games are always on Saturday mornings, which makes it hard for those of us who work on Saturdays (One day we will get Sundays, oneeeee daaaay!)

What I should look into is whether particular modules give the Aasi or whether it is some kind of special issue only type deal. If Iknew 100% where the Boon came from it might be a bit more achievable.

I could only wish for a well organized PFS area. We are lucky to get one module in a month due to low numbers of players and time constraints with the people that run the modules. I would absolutely love an every Saturday Society haha

4/5 5/55/55/55/5

At the end of the day the Saturdays are spread across the city (ie you might be up for an hours drive to some!) but thats still miles better than the bad old days.

I would suggest that these forums are a great place to get started gathering like minded people, then coordinate through something like Facebook and start building a small group. In the interim if you have a group you game with already consider swaping to PFS format and, if need be, approach your local library or other community venue for tablespace (who wants a pile of strangers in your house?) and go from there.

I toyed with the idea of doing just that so I could solve what I consider the 'Sunday conundrum' of all the games being Saturdays :p
Downside is that I'd also 100% likely get lumped with GM'ing... oh wait, I do that anyway...!

Well out of all the people I've talked to no one lives in my small estranged Appalachian area where games like this are the devil...I have library and comic book shop space (which is where I play) but people want to play more than GM so dedicated GMs are a rare commodity

We have the sunday special up next month shifty (its on warhorn now and on most the shadowlodge facebook pages) and winterfest is coming up soon so another convention, We have a very active VC in the sydney region so he keeps us all busy with games and running.

i'm a planetouched fanboy. Tiefling, Aasimaar, Fetchling, Suli, Oread, Sylph, Undine, and Ifrit. those 8 races should be opened up for PFS.

Dark Archive 4/5

I have seen boons for Aasimaar, Tengu, Dhampir, Kitsune, Wayangs, Nagaji. There are probably others.

As you can also get GM boons, you could improve your chances of getting a race boon by GMing PFS at a convention.

4/5 5/55/55/55/5

I am glad the alternate races are actually uncommon, I accept it does limit the 'circus freak' party where NO ONE plays anything except x-planar, which kind of ruins the point.

Special should be...special :)

That said, I'm keen to nab one.

Silver Crusade 3/5

I seriously doubt that PFS would invalidate the hundreds of special race boon sheets that are out there by making those races generally available.

Pretty much any convention that does PFS should have boons for players and races are part of that. Personally I think this system is fine, it makes other races special as they should be.

Boons like this are not given out on scenario Chronicles. Rather, they're on separate Chronicles given out at convention-level events (15 or more tables) or at special events.

There was an Aasimar or Tiefling boon give out as part of the Beginner Box Bash event when that product was launched, mfor example. That specific boon is no longer available, but here may be other opportunities for access to special races in the future.

Edit: flagging to get this moved to the PFS forum.

That BBB boon was Tiefling or Dhampyr, actually.

Which is how I have a Dhampyr Undead Lord Cleric running around....

Not to be rude, but it doesnt look like you even play PFS, so why do you care what is legal and what isnt?

Yes, it's boon only. Yes with the ARG it should open up the races that were previously Boon only (then set boons on the other races). Yes I think it's unfair.

And yes I know I'm raging futilely, but I will rage.

wow... I have a Tiefling. I remember very fondly when I won the boon (pure chance) at a CON. The character is very special to me, and I treat her very carefully - if she dies, then I don't have a tiefling. Makes her really special.

Have I seen others? well, yeah. But they were really special too. I like having a special thing - and I like the fact that other people can have special things too, even things I can't have.

I think that PFS should open up to more races. I don't think anyone's going to say "Man, I really hate Assimar clerics!" any time soon.

And besides, playable goblins would be fun :)

Scarab Sages

Part of what makes an aasimar cleric cool is that they're special. If everyone can play them, they're no longer as special as they once were.

I, for one, am perfectly fine with special races being special. Wouldn't mind Paizo finding a small way for people who don't go to Cons to get to have a boon too, but as it is, I would imagine that special races aren't more than 5% to 10% of the total character population. ... And I think that is just fine.

No. No goblins. We Be Goblins is fine. Maybe a sequel in the future but Goblin Pathfinders? That would be horrible.

Unequivocally this.

Beyond even the merest shadow of doubt.
Worse even than when World of Warcraft allowed goblins as players.

Why don't we just let people have the core classes then? After all, being a Magus is 'special'.

Or limit spells to the core book without a boon? After all, Snapdragon Fireworks is 'special'.

My complaint is, and always will be, that with the ARG coming out (and to a lesser extent, the Blood of [race] books coming out) races are the only thing tiered. There is an 'admission fee' to playing X race, own the book. This holds true for classes, spells, feats, traits, gear, everything else.

Some of them are... as boons. Which is as it should be. An explosion of plane-touched and other non-core among the playerbase would only turn Golarion into a sad ill-played knock-off of Talislanta.

Indeed no goblin Pathfinders. Goblins maybe in certain non-PFS scenarios, modules or specials and home games. Maybe a goblin based campaign but not sure that would make sense.

I am already a little nervous about some of the potentially cutesy races (possibly Kitsune, Catfolk) and hoping we aren't headed towards something similar to the Runequest Duck issue. (Runequest Ducks split the community.)

It will be interesting to see where this goes as Paizo will clearly want to sell this book to the PFS player base. I am expecting either a change in the rules or a _lot_ of race boons, probably the latter at the upcoming major cons. After all by restricting avilability you can make something _more_ desirable.

Mike has said in the past that race boon availability will not become more frequent than they are now.

Since the ARG will have material for all the core races, even those players without a race boon will have plenty of PFS legal material added when the book is adopted.

I'm gonna say yes on that, too. Though, I know it's not gonna happen in PFS. I used to play other organized play campaigns in which, yes, you had to gain access to new spells, new equipment, and such through play and interaction with NPCs. Though I will grant that it was given on the sheet after an adventure, rather than a convention "boon".

@Vinyc,

That doesn't change the crux of my argument at all. There's no 'boon' to use the classes in UC, then people arguing that it's ok because you can use all the gear. There's no 'boon' to allow the extracts in the APG, then people arguing it's fine because you can play the Alchemist.

As to the 'rarity in Golarion' argument... bah. Not every pathfinder is a faction member, but every Pathfinder PC is. Summoners are supposed to be the rarest of classes, but there's no issue if a party of all summoners shows up at the table.

I know I'm playing St. Jude here, but it is something I believe in.

Yeah I'm in the camp hoping that second tier races get opened up soon to PFS with the ARG. Many of us only get to experience Pathfinder through PFS and so get denied the pleasure of talking like a Goblin, getting our sparkle on as a Damphir or emo with the Teifling! Bring it on I say! As it stands it sorta rings on Con-Sobbery that only those who can get the time/money together to head off to a Con get to play these boon races.

"Con Snobbery"?
Seriously? You think that people that go to a Con are snobs that think they deserve boons? Or that the organizers are snobs for giving boons to Con players?

I made a deal with my girlfriend for "time" to go to A-Kon this weekend. I'm trading a trip to the Kimbell Art Museum with her for four hours of gaming, since we have to travel out of town for them both, and they're near each other. As far as money, the gaming that I am doing is free. I'm full time art student, and I don't have any more (and likely less) money than the next guy. I can't pay to play my favorite game.

As has been said above, it doesn't take a lot to get a game day together at a local FLGS, or even at a local college. And actually, in the past 5 years easily 85% of the gaming that I have done (likely over 150 games) has been at a college student center. And of those that weren't, none of them have been more than about 20 miles away. (Even in an old car, that's not more than a gallon or two of gas.)

So, i am sorry to hear that it's not convenient for you, one player, to not have it easy and have it the way that you want it. But, for some of us at a least, it's not time, money, or distance. It's about making an effort to play our favorite game, and enjoying our hobby in PFS. ... And I am anything but a Con Snob.

Not everything in UC or UM is PFS legal, so it isn't a fair comparison to say that everything in ARG should be legal for use. If you want to draw a parallel between PFS legal material from the ARG and books like UC and UM, you can look at things in the following manner.

Here is a brief highlight from what is not available for general use in PFS from UC: several archetypes, a few feats, siege weapons, performance combat, dueling, vehicle combat, armor as DR, called shots, and wounds and vigor.

From UM the following are not PFS legal: spellblight, spell duels, binding outsiders, construct construction, custom spell design, and words of power.

In the ARG there will be alternate racial abilities, archetypes and feats available for all of the standard core races. If you have a bestiary race character you will also have access to the material related to that race as well. Which means every player will have the same chance of benefiting from ARG material than any other sourcebook released so far by Paizo.

Overall I don't care either way if the bestiary races were campaign legal, and have one or two concepts if I ever get the opportunity to use one. Paizo has decided to use special boons(including the race boons) as a marketing tool to encourage attendance at larger events(not just Cons), and I don't have a problem with that.

Sovereign Court 5/5 RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

I'm sure you can point to the boons that allow those banned archtypes rules and mechanics then. After all, that's my point, if I want to use the Alchemist, I don't need a boon, I need ARG. If I (for some insane reason) wanted to play a ninja, I don't need a boon, I need UC.

What? You can't? So you're saying those rules apply equally to everyone for archtypes, mechanics and feats? Thank you for proving my point.

My complaint is (and remains) that races are the only thing that requires a boon. This creates a tier between those who have boons, and those who don't. That barrier is artifical and imposed by PFS. I didn't complain (much) when the boons were the only source. I've cheered Paizo when they've made 'exclusives' available (convention minis, glasses, the one scenario) to the 'general public'. I feel with the ARG, it's time to take the 'boon races' and make them available to people who own the ARG, just like the Ninja is available to those who own UC, the scorpion whip is available to those who own AA, the +2 to will save for half elf replacement trait is to those who own APG, etc etc.

I'd even not mind (much) if the races that *aren't* boons (catfolk/ratfolk, etc etc) were restricted to boons for a year or two, then 'trickle down' to folks who don't, or can't, go to cons. Serves the same purpose, and function of giving Paizo boons to hand out. Come 2014/2015, I'm sure something else would come along. If nothing else the 'free resurrection' boons never get old.

I understand I'm unlikely to make Mike see the light.* It doesn't matter if I can or not. Unless he wants to get out the ban hammer, I'll keep making my feelings known. Politely.

*

Spoiler:
And, despite the 'restraining order' joke in the Free RPG day module, I don't feel passionately enough to be irrational. Go, have fun at Origins Mike, I won't be there, even though it's in my home town. Came too quickly (I thought the date change was 2013, not 2012) and I don't know if I could handle the crowds long enough to volunteer, and I'm broke. I'm planning for 2013, with kids in tow hopefully)

Didn't I see a post Monday that said there would be clarifications posted on Wednesday regarding the PFS allowable content in BOF? Can somebody point to that?

The problem is you can't equate races to class archetypes or equipment. Races are MUCH more valuable than allowing a character to use an advanced gun, a permanent bonus to a skill or access to a certain archetype. They are also MUCH more powerful than the core races so there is no reason to NOT choose an alternate race.

As it's already been pointed out recently, it is REALLY easy to get access to an alternate race boon so keeping them exclusive and boon-only shouldn't prevent anyone from getting a chance at access.

I do not agree with the above statements.

I guess I could go thru line by line and explain that MY OPINION is different from yours, but (shrug) ... nah.

I have given away a number of boons I got at different CONs. I have used some. Among the ones given away were racial boons. Amoung the ones kept and used were racial boons. They give the characters created with them a different flavor - but not "MUCH more powerful than the core races " - in fact, I find them very well balanced with the Core Races.

NM, I found it in the "Additional Resources". Thanks.

Unfortunately nosig, it is not my opinion that they are more powerful, it is a fact.

Compare the Aasimar to any other core race. Name me a core race that has no negative ability penalty, two ability stat boosts, a scaling SLA, 3 resistances, darkvision, martial weapon proficiency in addition to the standard skill boosts and movement that medium races get.

Any of the elemental races that choose an elemental sorcerer bloodline get an additional +2 to Cha (Ifrit Elemental Fire sorcerers can start with a 20 in Cha without minimizing other important stats).

Dhampirs and Tieflings have a powerful SLA.

The only non-core race that seems most balanced is the Tengu and it is my opinion that this should be the only one opened up, if any.

derailing post that I should maybe have deleted:

I have a friend of my that says something very much like this about Dwarves. Something about being uneffected by armor.

I've actually given it a lot of thought, when the racial boons were first coming out. I held onto my racial boons for... months, and started 3 new characters (core races) before I actually used one. I've given the rest to other people - who in turn gave one of them (a tiefling) on to a third person.

Are they different? yes. Are they better - for some concepts sure! but ... sorry, my opinion is still my opinion.

I have an Elven character with a Boon to Perception (+2). Does that make him better than a Dwarf? Yeah! he's got a +4 to perception... wait... does that make him a better Cleric than the dwarf?

I have a Cleric with SR... he's a Dwarf. Which of the expanded races gets Darkvision, a bonus to WIS, full movement in Heavy armor, and Spell Resistance? Not better than, just different.

Everything is relative. There are a lot of corner cases.

Silly Corner Case: I have several characters with Hat's of Disguise. I use the item for a lot of things - one of which is the "police sketch artist" where my PC makes himself look like someone so that a witness can give the rest of the party a look at what someone looks like. It came as a shock resently when I noticed that many of the racial boons can't do that. They can't use Disguise Self to look like a PERSON, 'cause they aren't a person. Enlarge & Reduce person don't work on them (or Hold, or Charm... you get the idea)

and now I have rambled way to much, and should likly have made this a PM... maybe the internet will eat this and I'll be to tired to re-type it again.)
