Council of Thieves AP- Seeking Other Players and a DM

Recruitment

Liberty's Edge

Hello everyone. This is my first post on these messageboards, but I've been playing Pathfinder for a few months now, and D&D 3.5 for 2 years before that.

I'm very interested in the Council of Thieves Adventure Path. The group that I play with mentions it constantly and I have heard many exciting and interesting encounters, and the Player's Guide makes it sound very exciting. Most of the games I've played have been pretty "normal", as in, there was one consistent goal, and my party and I worked towards that goal, killing monsters, solving puzzles, and talking to NPCs along the way.

That all changed, however, when I started the Jade Regent AP in a RL game with my group. Oh man. We just went from hook to hook and I didn't see half of these awesome encounters coming. So many cool monsters and NPCs, and even though I have a six person group, we've had our share of difficulties. So I have to say, I'm very impressed with Paizo so far when it comes to pre-written modules.

Is anyone else interested in playing a Council of Thieves game, or running one? I'd like to play as a Half-Elf Urban Ranger with the Conspiracy Hunter trait.

I'd be interested in playing a halfling of some kind! :)

Already got a char. I'm keen.

Ps. Hey twigs.

Sovereign Court

I'd be fine to play as a character or I might be willing to take the role of DM if no one else does. I have all the books.

For characters, what are we allowed to use you'd say?

I am looking to join a new game. Need something fresh I haven't tried before. I would build a character if we find a GM.

I too would join if we had a GM.

5 players and a possible gm.

GO NOW!

Anything you like! I don't want to limit anyone's creativity. As long as it's Pathfinder and the DM is okay with it (so if we get a DM who isn't okay with 3rd party stuff or psionics, you know), then have at it.

And I'm glad to get so much interest. I'm really looking forward to this game.

Good Morning. I maybe able to GM this path. I have this AP path, but I have not played it, and its been forever since I reviewed the path. I will look at today and decide.

A few basic rules, if I GM:

20 Pt buy
No score below an 8 before racial adjustment.
Average coin
Download the Free PG
2 traits, (1 must be a campaign trait)
No third party material
No Alchemist, Gunslinger or Summoner
Core races only, no thiefling characters.
4 people (5 if there is no posting issues)
Minimum 3-5 posting a day.
I'm sure I would have few other rules but I'd need to think about it.

If I decide to DM, it will be a short recruitment. Detailed backgrounds get you to the head of the list.

Hello baldwin, thank you for your interest. I have a character written up to play this game, though if I remember correctly, he is currently 15 PB (will check now).

Here is his character sheet. His backstory is written out in full at the bottom of the page. http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=399055

Would you be willing to allow the Suspicious trait from the d20 PFSRD? (Fan-made, gives you a +1 trait bonus to Sense Motive checks and makes Sense Motive a class skill for you.)

NeoSeraphi - Can you upload your character and background under your profile or an alias? If you are not familiar with what I'm mentioning click on by Avatar and look under my alias tab for an idea. "Jasmine Rose or Jenar Hickory" are good examples for you. "Suspicious" is in the APG pg 330, so it would be permitted.

Okay, I uploaded it under my profile.

Sweet. Here is a build. I wanted to keep things simple so his story is a bit simple but the character build and personality should be quite amusing. This is Kenji Masada

@Baldwin.

Duncan is ready. Just needs a campaign trait and to buy gear.
I'll look at the players guide and rework his backstory as needed.

Basically he's a 'Hand of Vengeance' but he is more a bide his time an get you at the right moment rather than kick in the door guy. Like batman but with more ass kicking and less problem solving. He has real high saves vs magic, which scale up because of the which hunter archetype.

Game interest:

I will be able to GM this game. It's my first PBP GMing but lots of RL experience. I just need to finish up a few things, like associate my profile with this thread.

Ok, everyone read my guidelines in my previous post. I will keep the recruitment open until Thursday, May 24th at 10:00pm EDT. I'm on the east coast. (Note: once I get 10-12 quality applicants, I may close it early. So don't procrastinate.)

Everyone work up your characters, make them fit the guidlines, and develop some back ground. I will begin to go through the submissions and I will ask follow-up questions.

I will add no evil alignment to the rules, you all need to work together as a party.

So far, I have:

NeoSeraphi - Male, H/E, Urban Ranger, He will be given an automatic entrance since he started the thread and request. Thank you.

Kenji Masadi - Male, Human, Martial Artist

Duncan Redhammer - Male, Dwarf, Inquisitor (double check the level you listed)

I'm an active gamer, and like to keep the story moving, I have the luxury of being self employed and I'm able to be on line quite a bit. It is important that others confirm that they can post 3-5 times a day. I understand that life happens but its best to have an understanding heading into the selection process as to the expectations.

Thanks.

Just want to throw this out. I'm a new comer to the boards and have a few hiccups figuring things out.
Andrea is a neutral cleric of Urgathoa who was born froma Bloodmother(One who bears children for the church) and raised amongst vast feasts and undead so becoming a follower of the Pallid Princess was only natural. Andrea sees death and disease as impartial forces that strike down serf and king alike(She would love the Masque of the Red Death play)
Andrea's motive for 'adventuring' follows two things that quite often happen during adventures: The (hopeful) acculmination of wealth and the production of corpses. Andrea would quite often have detect magic running so she can silently aquire unattended items and her share of money would be sent back tot he church(minus a modest amount). She also sends reports back to the church about lairs emptied and corpses created so they can be used as the church sees fit (10 goblins killed, modest wounds, 4 burnt heavily)
Andrea is more than willing to aid the party in their goals and has no problems fighting undead, although she will leave if they start hunting down fellow Urgathoains.

level fixed. Added westcrown firebrand trait.

Edit: I'm pretty addicted to pbp. So 2-3 or more posts a day is not a problem.

Duncan Redhammer wrote:

Thank you.

I've emailed the webmaster my profile and this link info, hopefully it will be updated tomorrow.

Thank you. Good luck to all the other applicants.

I can easily post 3-5 times per day, as I only have a part time job at the moment. However, if someone could tell me how to subscribe to a thread (like, getting an email sent by Paizo whenever the thread gets a new post), that would really help me stay as active as possible in the game. Does this site have a function like that?

I'd like ot submit John Deos. Currently a fighter, planning to become a Hellkinght. Info is in the profile. As for the Post per day, I should be fine for most days, I'll warn a head of time if I can't make the requirement.

I got second dibs, right? (I jest, I jest. :P) I'm fairly active on the boards, I think. Duncan should be able to attest to that. I'm living in Sydney, so I'll be posting at GMT+10, but for the most part I've been plenty able to keep pace with the PbP's I've been a part of, and given that my uni semester is ending I should have a fairly big break over the winter.

I'm toying with a halfling character, but I want to deliberate on it a bit first. I've never been a big halfling man, but I do like a challenge.

I want to play something a little different from my current PbP character (a bitter, jaded elf) with someone idealistic and a bit less caustic. On the other hand, I think playing a paladin of Iomedae or a playboy diabolist with a revolutionary patriot bent would be so much fun.

Decisions, decisions... I should have a profile ready by the end of the night, regardless.

Click on my alias to see my character submission. I know I'm lacking a campaign trait and a backstory...but that'll come when I've finished work on this essay I've got due in 22 hours...

Are you me? (Albeit my own essay was due 22 hours AGO... :P)

Quite possibly XP

I can be active if the plot remains interesting and other post are frequent. I won't keep people waiting on me. My posting will be light at best on the weekends, in particular Sundays and Mondays because I run live games and work also.

You should get a sufficient number of posts from me.

Andrea added to my profile. I can post regularly. I do work 6 days a week from afternoon to evening

I'd like to cede my spot to the very worthy GMWaife who really deserves a chance to be a player. Assuming he bites and can post in time, please consider him. :)

So far we have:

NeoSeraphi "Shinon" - Male, H/E, Urban Ranger, NG
Kenji Masadi - Male, Human, Martial Artist, NG
Duncan Redhammer - Male, Dwarf, Inquistor, N
Mad Doc -Female, Human, Cleric of Urgathoa, N
Joe Does - Male, Human, fighter, LN
Cagliostro "Kyrim Dys" - Male, Elf, Rogue, N

Edit:
Joe Deos - sorry about the typo.

Joe does?

DM Questions

NeoSeraphi aka Shinon:

You had a very complete background.

1. How would Shinon react, if he knows or becomes aware of, another party member who is less than "good" or is morally questionable?

2. What will it take to earn Shinon's trust given his childhood experience?

3. How long has Shinon been in Westcrown?

4. What does he like best about Westcrown?

Kenji Masadi :

I really like the fist fighter concept that can be a lot of fun RP.

1. What brought Kenji to Westcrown, as opposed to, another city?

2. How long has Kenji been in Westcrown?

3. What type of place, or places, does Kenji "hang out" in to meet like minded individuals?

4. How much has Kenji learned about any of the Noble families?

5. What was it about his heart that went out to the people of Westcrown?

6. Describe 2 or 3 NPCs he has met since being in the city?

7. Does he have a impression or opinion about thieflings, yet?

Duncan Redhammer:

1. What does true neutral mean to your character?

2. How is it Westcrown has become Duncan's adopted city?

3. How long has Ducan been in Westcrown?

4. What, if anything, has Duncan done when confronted with crime?

5. Describe 2-3 NPC's Duncan has met.

Andrea, MadDoc:

1. What does true neutral mean to your character?

2. What is Andrea's attitude toward thieflings?

3. How will she interact with "Good" characters that may be wary of the undead?

4. How long has Andrea been in Westcrown and what attracted her to the city?

5. How often, and how much, of her wealth is she sending to the Church?

6. Describe 2-3 NPC's she has come across while in the city.

Cagliostro aka Kyrim:

1. What does true neutral mean to your character?

I will have more questions when you complete the background.

Joe Deos:

1. What is Joe's attitute toward thieflings?

2. Was Joe born and raised in Westcrown?

3. Besides his deceased father, does he have any other family, if so, what is that relationship?

4. Describe 2-3 NPC's Joe has met in the city.

Andrea:
1. (A bit tricky here about philosophy) Andrea doesn't see things like undeath or using undead creatures(mindless ones) as bad, they are tools and states of beings. Undead who go on rampages need to be restrained or if need be put down since they are threats to themselves and herself of course if they are nearby. As for evil overlords or overly good rulers she would not be comfortable with them since those extremes will hamper her(Plus evil types tend to be very unreasonable about rival faiths even evil ones) So she would be agreeable to overthrowing a tyrant if things become less evil.
(This doesn't sound too cheesy does it?)
2. Andrea has yet to meet any theiflings so she has no strong opinion. Even so, one who has been raised amongst the undead has no reason to complain about the infernal blooded. Case by case.
3. Andrea will avoid raising any undead at least until she is sure how the other party members feel about their use. She will use her commanding undead ability to make them flee the battlefield ("Flee now, undead ones!") Undead who attempt to eat the party and her will be dealt with as needed.
4. About a year. The noble houses are very wealthy and the flow of wealth can be taken advantage of by one who works in the counting houses. Andrea aims to eventually pull in a good salary and the morgues tend to be full of the unfortunate who cross the infernal houses.
5. Andrea sends 50% to her church as a tithe at pay time. While many would think her mad, she has few needs since her magic can provide food and the small cot she has is much like the stone slab she slept on when she was an acolyte.
6. Gerald Andrea's employer at the counting house who was contacted by her church and keeps her as an apprentice. He appreciates her ability to charm the pants and purses off people and thinks she might be better suited as a tax collector or other suitable profession.
Nathaniel Morgue Worker. He has a good eye for the nameless unfortunates who end up in the big cooler and has been aware of those who get 'vanished' because they crossed the wrong person ("Oh yea, Larry the watchman was just a little to honest last night when that trouble went down. Wanna chat with him for a bit *rubs fingers*)
Some pictures that I based Andrea on. The Maiden/Saint Astraea from Demon's Souls. Astraea

1. John is mostly indifferent about Thieflings. Though he is wary of them since he believes they are most likely to become criminals. If he finds out that their heritage is demonic in nature, he will never trust them, and will despise them due to their demonic blood.

2. No, he was born and raised in Egorian, leaving recently to improve his training under a new teacher.

3. John has a mother who he left in Egorian. She was the one that helped John's religious growth. John is protective of her, especilly after his father died, and would not have left if he had not known that she was well cared for.

4. Alfar Decan is the reason John came to Westcrown. A retireed Hellknight and adventurer, Alfar is best known for being a skilled demon hunter. John came to him to better train in fighting demons. He is a patiant man and a though teacher, but an excellent teacher as well.

Lumar Decan is Alfar's grandson. He is also training to be a Hellknight and is John's sparring partner. He is privladged and seems to only be interested in the respect he'll gain from being a Hellknight. Nether John nor Lumar like each other.

baldwin the merciful:

Essentially, for story, I'm gonna have Cag be a spy/assassin type character for the government or whatever (It will all be nice and fluffy when I'm actually done and get around to reading the Player Guide [which will be sometime later today, or mid-day tomorrow]). Cagliostro is an alias he uses, and his true identity is going to be somewhat of a 'state secret'.

Cag is considered true neutral because he acts with indifference. He is not concerned that his actions 'do good', nor is he concerned with his actions 'doing evil'. Similarly, he is not concerned with how his actions promote law or chaos. Cag is simply an expression of the will of those he serves. He's the 'good soldier' who simply does what he's told not because he believes in it, or anything so silly, but because he doesn't care enough to do otherwise.

Liberty's Edge

DM:

Spoiler:

1. Shinon is not a paladin. He does not think of things in terms of "good" and "evil". He would object strongly to the following actions, however: Thievery, murder (not in self-defense), and racism. However, "evil acts", such as creating undead or summoning evil outsiders, do not phase him. Just when those creatures are used for the above purposes.

2. This would be very difficult. Someone who openly shares his views, such as a person who would physically step in to stop a theft or a murder with no promise of reward or other selfish reason, would have an easier time gaining Shinon's trust. Someone who saves Shinon's life would definitely get special treatment from him (by special, I mean not as much suspicion).

3. Shinon was born and raised in Westcrown. He's 22, so he's been living in Westcrown for 22 years. Shinon met Traine when they were both 7 years old.

4. Shinon's feelings about Westcrown are that the city itself is alive. The noise of the people, and the coming together of different ideals and values, all trying to make themselves heard over each other, is like Westcrown's beating heart, and Shinon likes that the best. He likes to walk around the city, close his eyes, and just listen to passerby and try and hear all of the people at once.

Spoiler:
What does true neutral mean to your character?
Neutral Good. Sorry. Ragathiel doesn't allow True Neutral. Being Neutral Good, for Duncan means justice without being beholden to Law. He was raised among dwarves and sees the value of Law but knows they are not perfect and he will easily break them.forbtje sake of good if required. Duncan focuses on justified vengeance and so while a city official might be above the law, he is not above Duncan's retribution

. How is it Westcrown has become Duncan's adopted city?
Duncan is called upon to be a light for justice in the face of cruel authority. He has been called.here, by Ragathiel, for this is a stronghold where oppression and evil is made legal. The populace are kept under heel by those in power and have no one to grant them justice.

3. How long has Ducan been in Westcrown? About a year. He has been working as any other smith by day and a vigilante at night when.his vision affords him an advantage. He targets any criminal he happens upon or ones who escape the Hellnights notice.

4. What, if anything, has Duncan done when confronted with crime?
Depends on the crime. Duncan makes an effort to understand motivations. A man stealing food is only doing so because he is desperate. In which case , Duncan appears and drops a few coins to the vendor. A crime of the flesh is evil and more than one girl has found herself underneath an attacker who suddenly falls dead. Squirming free to see a dagger in the mans back, her rescuer unseen.

5. Describe 2-3 NPC's Duncan has met.
Brian Mason- One bread theif Duncan followed home to see whatotivated him to steal. Seeing him merely bringing food to a shack to feed an underwieght and pregnent girlfriend, Duncan took pity on him and made the young man his apprentice at the forge he works at.

The Smithy is owned by Grumm Sharpest, a fellow casteless dwarf who will plys his trade to any folk honest and with the coin. Grumm spied Duncan's well constructed weapons (fashioned himself) and not recognising their mark, asked who forged them. When Duncan replied he'd made them, he was hired on the spot.

Incidentally, that post by Majestic8705 was me...sorry, my mind kinda slipped...essays and no sleep do not a coherent poster make.

Thanks. I've looked at everyone's profiles so I did figure that out.

There is an underlying premise in CoT AP that the corrupt government which irks each potential party member. Can each character create in a spoiler tab for me an explanation for their personal issues or resentment. Your campaign trait should be incorporated into that explanation. Basically, this will become the hook that brings the diverse party together.

Thanks.

I have answered all your questions under my profile. Feel free to take a gander and point out any issues or concepts I missed. Thanks

Liberty's Edge

I believe Shinon's reason for being upset about the environment is obvious in his backstory. If you feel the need for me to elaborate further, just say the word.

DM:
After his daily training, John would walk the streets of Westcrown. Being trained to do so by his father, John kept his eyes open for crime, this led to a strange discovery though. People who normally were one the path John took would one day just not be there anymore. When John would ask others where the person had gone, most would act as if that person never existed. John then used some of the ways of asking questions from the more shady people of Westcrown that his father had also taught him. These inquires brought up only that there was a person or group of persons that was behind the disappearances and more. John decided that he would look into this further.

NeoSeraphi wrote:

Given your backstory, I should have excluded you from the request.

Motives:
Andrea feels stifled by the tight-fisted nature of the government and has noticed that taxes and 'gratuities' the counting house must pay have increased and knows that greed is behind it rather than need. Plus the increased number of corpses in the morgue that have been mutilated; jaws smashed, tongues ripped out and eyes plucked as if someone does not want the dead to talk and this has piqued her interest about why this is happening.

Duncan sees the entire ruling government of westcrown as oppresive to the populace. Whatsmore the laws in Westcrown are set up to keep the downtrodden underfoot. The hellknights are lawful in the extreme but the locals are afraid of them. Supposedly effective courts can easily be turned to the side of who has the best lawyer. Bribes are even regulated.
Here is a place that needs the whole system bought down. Duncan wants to seek justice and vengeance against those in power. But he is a single dwarf worshipper of a mere demi-god.
So he bides his time, ekking out what small measures of vengeance he can. His time will come.

Hello everyone...a few thing regarding the campaign. I've decided to close the recruitment today. Since there were six of you who really expressed an interest:

Neoperaphi "Shinon"
Kenji masadi
Duncan Redhammer
MadDoc "Andrea"
John Deos
Cagliostro "Kyrim"

I've decided to invite the 6 of you for the game.

Since I did not start this thread, I don't know how to link it to the Campaign Thread, discussion and gameplay. If someone know how, plwase advise.

Otherwise check in here:

http://paizo.com/campaigns/BaldwinTheMercifulsCoTCampaign/discussion

Lets see if this short cut will work to the Discussion Thread:

I'm actually going to withdraw from this campaign. Still got a bit much on my plate to commit to 3-5 a day. In two weeks, I can do that...but for now, I'd just be holding y'all back.

Cagliostro that is ok. Thanks for putting the character the together.
