2E Agathinon

Conversions

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So I took upon myself this "titanic deed", because my campaign just couldn't do without this angel. An augmented Cassisian or a synthetist or a shapechanger druid lacked each something.
But converting a monster from 2E to Pathfinder was too much for me. So I searched the net for 3.5 conversions and chose this one, which seemed to be most faithful and make most sense. Thanks to the author.
I hope, however, to see an official conversion in one of the next Bestiaries.
Meanwhile, everybody please read and critique.

Special Abilities
Channel Positive Energy (Su): An agathinon channels positive energy like a 9th-level good cleric.
Spells: Agathinon cast divine spells as 9th-level clerics. They do not gain access to domains.
Superior Shapechange (Su): An agathinon may assume the shape of any creature or object as a standard action, as with the polymorph any object spell, until it chooses to return to its natural form. When in object form, the agathinon retains its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma score. It may assume the form and powers of any magic item of less than artifact status. It cannot move on its own while in object form, unless the item has the ability to do so, and since it lacks limbs it cannot use spells that require material or somatic components. An agathinon can perceive the world around it and can communicate normally while in object form.
In all other respects, an agathinon functions as a creature, not an object. It gains no hardness or additional hit points in object form, and any spells, attacks, or effects that specifically target it are resolved as if they had been used against the creature's natural form except that the agathinon benefits from a size bonus to AC appropriate to the size it has assumed. An agathinon in object form may not use any of its abilities or the item’s abilities by itself.
Object Bond (Sp): An agathinon in object form can form a special bond with a character of good alignment (or a neutral character, if her current actions suit the agathinon's mission). An agathinon in object form in a creature's possession may bestow the ability to cast divine spells as a 1st-level cleric to the creature. An agathinon in object form may also bestow upon the creature the ability to channel positive energy as a 9th-level cleric.
Protected Life Force (Ex): Agathinons are never harmed by positive-dominant or negative-dominant planar traits.

Agathinons are the warriors among angels, while the others are considered celestial stewards. These helpful spirits are found in multitudes on the Upper Planes, where they seek to serve good beings. There, they appear in their natural humanoid form, looking somewhat like an elf with luminescent skin and bright, shining eyes. On the outer planes they appear in their natural humanoid form, with males and females equal in size and power.
Sometimes agathinons choose to travel to the Material Plane, or are ordered to go there. They travel there singularly, and always adopt another material form. Depending on the mission, they may appear as a humanoid, or a beneficent creature such as a lammasu, shedu, or unicorn. They can also become non-corporeal and contain their lifeforce in an object such as a ring, talisman, weapon, or vase. As an object, it becomes something useful that will aid a particular character of good alignment.
Agathinons are stern beings, serious and unyielding in their righteous mission. They are devoted to their constant pursuit of doing good deeds. They aid mortals in confrontations against evil on the orders of higher celestials (or even gods), lending all of their abilities to the fight.
In their natural form, agathinons never attack with weapons, although they may use their touch attack. When faced with combat, they usually assume another form. In humanoid form, agathinons will attack with weapons and spells. An agathinon's natural weapons, in its natural form or in another creature’s form, are treated as good-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

P.S. I missed one 3rd-level spell in the description. I'll add blessing of courage and life to the list. :P

I'm a little confused as to why it casts as an 8th level cleric, but grants channel energy as a 9th level cleric. Especially when it, on its own, only channels as a 7th/8th level cleric.

Why is it listing unarmed strike damage? Unless something has a natural attack, or something like Improved Unarmed Strike listed in its feats, unarmed strikes are not listed. In fact, since it's not wearing armor or listed as wearing gauntlets or having IUS, the unarmed strike is non-lethal anyway.

Did you mean to give them a slam attack like the other angels have?

Otherwise it looks good. I'm a little iffy on how Superior Shapechange works, but it seems like it could be a fun way to get an intelligent item into the game. Planar ally anyone?

You're right on the channel energy granted ability. I copypasted from the ENWorld version, which gave the agathinon CR 9, and must have forget to correct it. It should be 7th level, not 9th.
As for the unarmed strike, in 2E the agathinon was listed as fighting often with its bare hands, but yes, I guess I was meaning a slam attack (it's some time since I made this). Superior Shapechange was also in 2E's description of the monster, and I felt forced to convert it since no other monster in Pathfinder or 3.5 can do that!

If it's fighting unarmed, you might consider giving it 2 slam attacks (like the Solar has) so that it can attack with both limbs, but that makes attacking with the slams to probably be slightly more effective against most opponents (since it will have a higher average attack bonus on both rolls).

I'm just not sure how using PAO is a useful comparison here, since you basically remove everything from PAO's description except the ability to change into objects.

PAO has a duration, changes ability scores if you morph into an inanimate object, does give the properties of the object it morphs into, and even changes the type (if I understand PAO correctly). Honestly, I sort of feel like you just ought to drop the reference to PAO entirely and just leave Superior Shapechange as its own ability, changing the SQ to "superior shapechange" from "change shape (polymorph any object)".

Otherwise the ability might need to be rewritten to sort of take into account how PAO works. My understanding of how a permanent effect on PAO works is that you lose all of the abilities based on form of your original form and gain all of the abilities based on form of your new form. The problem is, I think Superior Shapechange would be an ability based on form, so once the Agathinon become a stone or whatever, it could never change back because it would lose the ability.

Since you specify that becoming an object doesn't actually grant it any of the benefits of being an object and they don't lose any of the benefits of being a creature, I'm not really sure why this is a polymorph effect and not some sort of elaborate illusion, maybe even a quasi-real illusion.

I just noticed that they don't attack with weapons in their natural form, and yet are listed as carrying a +1 heavy mace of shocking. This seems odd to me. You then say that they "may use their touch attack" but they have no touch attacks listed. Did you mean that they may use their unarmed strike/slam attack?

Side Note: Agathinon and Agathion (the other neutral good outsiders) sound a lot alike. I kept reading it as the latter the first several times through.

Agathion were called Guardinal in 2E, that's why. ^-^
"Touch attack" is another uncorrected copypaste. It should be "barehanded".
And, the 2E description states that they use their mace when they're polymorphed in humanoid form, never in their natural form.
Actually, the only current spell giving the ability to become an object is Statue, but you can change back freely when you use it. Moreover, a raktavarna can take a Tiny object shape and change back. It's true that the bestiary doesn't indicate an equivalent spell for that.

It can change back to its natural form as a standard action,
Object Bond (Sp): An agathinon in object form can form a special bond with a character of good alignment (or a neutral character, if her current actions suit the agathinon's mission). An agathinon in object form in a creature's possession may bestow the ability to cast divine spells as a 1st-level cleric to the creature. An agathinon in object form may also bestow upon the creature the ability to channel positive energy as a 7th-level cleric.

In their natural form, agathinons never attack with weapons, although they may use unarmed attacks. When faced with combat, they usually assume another form. In humanoid form, agathinons will attack with weapons and spells. An agathinon's natural weapons, in its natural form or in another creature’s form, are treated as good-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Looks good to me. Since you mention channeling positive energy, you don't need to mention "as a good cleric". Neutral and good clerics who channel positive energy channel it in the same manner. Unless you are trying to prohibit them from Versatile Channel, or something.

I also noted that you stuck with the unarmed attacks, but didn't do anything to make those lethal damage. If nothing else, give them IUS as a bonus feat.

I hadn't time to correct everything yesterday. Sorry (this is my first attempt with a monster), but I'm not well certain of the difference between a slam attack and an unarmed attack...

Well, a slam attack automatically deals lethal damage. It is a primary natural attack, so it attacks at your highest attack bonus and, since it would be a solitary natural attack, would apply 1-1/2 your strength modifier to damage. It would also deal slightly more base damage (1d4 instead of 1d3) and also qualify for Improved Natural Attack, if a GM wanted to augment the creature by adding extra hit dice or switching feats. A slam attack is usually the default for things that attack unarmed but don't have claws, a bite, horns or whatever. It just means striking hard with an appendage (arm, tentacle, vine, etc.) to deal bludgeoning damage. As a natural attack it could also be combined with a weapon attack (if, for some reason, the agathinon switched to using a one-handed manufactured weapon) at -5 to the attack roll.

An unarmed strike is basically a weak punch. Without having some method of dealing lethal damage with it (IUS or something like a gauntlet) they deal non-lethal damage. While they can be used on iterative attacks, they cannot be combined with weapon attacks without resorting to the Two Weapon Fighting rules (which for this guy would be -6/-10, which would suck). Unarmed strikes only deal strength modifier to damage, usually.

Basically, unarmed strikes are a weaker version of slam attacks that are mostly left to 0-hd creatures without natural attacks. For something whose stat block says that they prefer to fight unarmed, they need something to make that unarmed fighting worthwhile over using the mace they are equipped with. A slam attack is one step towards that (2 slam attacks might be better).

I also noticed this time through that you mention that the agathinon's natural weapons (even when polymorphed) count as good for the purposes of damage reduction, but this is mentioned nowhere in the stat block. Bypassing DR/good in its natural form is pretty standard (I can't remember if it's always called out), but keeping that ability when polymorphed needs to be because it's definitely not normal. Something like:

Pervasive Good (Su): Even when polymorphed, an agathinon's natural attacks count as good for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction.

Okay then, I'll replace unarmed strike with slam- amd thanks for the feedback.

It looks good to me. Seems like a fun plot device too. "You know that amulet that the priestess gave you 'as a ward against evil'? Yeah, that's a polymorphed angel. She's been making sure you stay on track and was there to protect you if needed. You did well, and now she wants to reward you."

"And how?" "She will be your cohort. Think of the advantages. A pet, a valuable ally, a loyal mount AND a magic sword all-in-one!"

Oh, on that note, Superior Shapechange currently mentions that the agathinon can change into a magical item of anything less than an artifact. In Object Form (which needs both words capitalized for consistency) you state "An agathinon in object form may not use any of its abilities or the item’s abilities by itself." This sort of implies that all of the abilities of the agathinon become activate-able abilities for the wielder of the agathinon-item.

So, let's say that an agathinon cohort becomes a magic sword (a +3 vorpal shock wounding longsword, because that's not epic or artifact level) for its leader. It also grants 7th level channeling and 1st level cleric casting for the wielder from Object Bond. Technically, it also allows 8th level cleric casting, access to all the SLAs, protective aura, 7 more uses of channel energy.

That's... wow. I mean, I want one, but that's a lot.

I'm also confused why Object Bond is (Sp) and not (Su). It doesn't really emulate any spells and probably shouldn't be viable to be counterspelled, subject to SR or provoke AoOs to use.

Also, a medium slam does 1d4 (not 1d3) and should apply 1-1/2 strength bonus to damage (+6, not +4).

Ok, I'll make corrections. In object form, only the object's abilities should be usable.

Ah. You might clarify that statement above to "An agathinon in object form may not use any of its abilities at all or activate the item’s abilities by itself." Italics for the added portion. That understanding makes a bonded object agathinon much tamer and more sensible.

See if my correction above satisfies you.

Ah, yes, much better. I like it. Seems good to go to me, and I just might steal it for my games.
