New Magic Item Crafting Feat: Egg Laying

Homebrew and House Rules

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I claim no responsibility for this idea. I had a really strange dream last night.

Egg Laying

Each morning you lay an egg, which you can imbue with magic.

Prerequisites: Arcane caster

Benefit: Each morning you lay an egg. The egg in all ways appears to be a chicken egg, but can be identified as special using Spellcraft or Knowledge (Arcana). While laying the egg you can imbue it with magical power by casting one spell that targets one or more creatures (including Personal spells). The egg then functions like a potion until it spoils, and has the appropriate aura, visible with Detect Magic. Even magically imbued eggs have the shelf life of chicken eggs and can be cooked as a chicken eggs. All of a magically imbued egg must be eaten to receive its magical effect.

Normal: Spellcasters don't lay eggs.

lol

What the... Strange, but highly amusing.

This is my favorite part.

Indeed!

The thought of eating it reminded me of *THIS* horror.

Interesting concept, though!

I really like this! Mechanically, it's one free potion a day; unlike potions, it can be a Personal spell and can be higher than 3rd level. You only get one, so make it count! Off the top of my head, I can't think of any really munchkin ways to use Eggs, but I'm sure there's some personal spell/above-3rd-spell that would get funky with the Egg wording.

I think that would be worth a feat for a strange wizard concept. You are a genius.

All homebrewing can cease. The greatest feat has been created.

Bask in its glory.

Sovereign Court

What about Tengu spellcasters? Racial alternative to their "Proficent in All Swords" thing?

I could see fighters hiring Tengu spellcasters to make them "Eggs of Bear's Endurance." Heh.

Except the thought of a Tengu wizard eating its own (magical) egg is just as disturbing as a dwarf laying its daily cure light wounds in the morning...

'findel

Sovereign Court

But this is an egg only for magical use, not baby-makin'. Besides, there's the impending and awkward, "Aren't you MALE?" exclamation from the party Nature expert (pending it is the truth.)

Then there's a debate on whether Tengu has live-born or egg children, and then he has to prepare some spells to erase his allies memory of that entire morning.

Great, I'll put that with the "do owlbears poop or regurgitate pellets" debate.

What? I don't even.

This is wrong on so many levels. I cannot even count them all.

Can a spellcaster hatch that egg? Will it grow into a magical chicken? Or something else?

And you're going to eat your own freak egg? That's just... no.

Do many necromancers and such call you freak on a daily basis?

I think I won't get any sleep tonight because of this.

You go sit in a corner and think about what you did. Or better not. I suspect that you might enjoy those thoughts too much.

Like fanguad, I want to point out a certain part of your post:

"Normal: Spellcasters don't lay eggs."

You hit the nail on the head. Spellcasters not laying eggs is NORMAL. Them laying eggs - especially humans and elves (I wouldn't put it past gnomes) - is disturbing and insane.

Spoiler:
Actually, I'm just jealous. I want to come up with disturbing stuff that makes people freak out and cry for their mummies. And I mean mothers. And undead. Maybe mummified female parents.

I'll definitely remember this one. Heavy weapon on our war against sanity, rationality and reality.

I'll finish with a joke
"Mommy, I don't want to eat my egg!"
"What? Why not?"
"It's bad!"
"No, it's not, you'll eat the whole one this time!"
"Even the beak?"

Well, in the dream two Pathfinder-setting armies were fighting in a battle that had stretched several months. The army whose support personnel included a huge group of egg-laying wizards had better-buffed warriors and was slowly winning.

Those wizards were treated humanely. But the feat might not be very likable if it prompted people to lock you in a cage (with a one-spell spellbook) and only feed you if you gave them a magical egg each morning.

Hm. PCs to the rescue?

Much like the original chicken egg one as to ask;

Who was the first one that saw where this came from and thought "I think I'd like to eat that."

I cannot describe how awesome this is... seriously.
Touché good sir.

Hard to even think how many stories or campaigns you could create just based on this concept...

Rather than a general feat, I would put this as an alternate 9th-level bloodline power for a sorcerer with the Aberrant bloodline. That would instantly take care of the "how is that anatomically possible" aspect -- you didn't have to be born with the requisite anatomy; you grew it.

I'd also add the ability to cast offensive spells into the egg (e.g. Fireball) and treat it as a thrown weapon: ranged touch attack, the primary target takes full damage, anyone in the area of effect treated normally (e.g. reflex save for half damage).

EDIT: Oh, and role-playing possibilities.

Fighter: "Ugh, shut that &*#@$ sorcerer up!"

Sorcerer: "Well, ex-CUSE me. I just laid my daily egg, and you just have to cackle after that ..."

I know at least 1 campaign setting where witches sometime lay eggs - and the child from the egg will end up as a powerfull immortal witch, so ....

On the other hand, reading the feat reminded me of ..... well let´s just say anime.

so... what would happen if the spellcaster belongs to a race which DO lay eggs? Harpy and xill come to mind...

Great. Anyone who hangs around with males with this feat have to eat fecal-matter-encrusted magical eggs to get any benefit. Pass.

Might as well make magical ear-wax or booger potions.

I get what the original poster is trying to do. Funny. Now please stop.

I claim this band name!

We fail to see what the agitation is about. Those limited mortal beings seem to have a very sophisticated and complicated system around their bodily secretions - some are abhorrent, while others are desirable. And with some, there seem to be conflicting social dynamics. They use them for waste disposal, pleasure, procreation, to convey meaning, and sometimes they use other species' secretions for nutrition.

It is our assumption that is is one of many ways they use to distract themselves from the cold, hard fact that their carefully constructed "reality" is but a lie, a mere shell to try and shut out what lies Beyond.

Fine, but you can't have Ultimage, I thought of that first.

Didn't grow up on a farm, didja?

If this feat were an egg, it would be encrusted with Win.

Does the egg have tiger blood?

All over it. Tiger Blood is one of the main imgredients of Win.

What if your spellcaster is an Tengu???

Dark Archive

Snatched for homebrew campaign.

I know at least one player that will laugh a lot.

Yeah, me too.

Liberty's Edge

This feat is either gender restricted or very very uncomfortable for male spellcasters.
