February 2020 Pathfinder Society Releases

Thursday, February 27, 2020

It’s the end of February, Pathfinders, and that means we have a new slate of adventures releasing, with cats, leshys, and insurance adjustments, as well as an overnight stay in a haunted house.

On the Pathfinder Adventure Society side, we released one scenario! Organized Play Lead Developer Linda Zayas-Palmer gives us a preview of what is in store for players.

This month, we released a spooky new adventure, Pathfinder Adventure Card Society #1: A Night at Bloodthorne Manor, which is a stand-alone adventure not related to the ongoing Year of Rotting Ruin plot. When a group of children dared each other to spend a night at a dilapidated manor house that was rumored to be haunted, most of them expected an evening of scary stories imagining what may lurk in the darkness. But the seemingly abandoned house was far from empty. Explore the mysteries of the manor, meet its occupants—both living and dead—and get the children back home safe. This adventure is designed to be particularly flexible. It’s set up for play at Tier 1, 2, 3, or 4, so you can easily pick the level that works best for your group.

For Pathfinder Society (second edition) players, we released two scenarios and one quest yesterday. Organized Play developer James Case describes March’s scenarios:

Our first adventure this month is Pathfinder Society (second edition) Scenario #1-14: Lions of Katapesh! This repeatable scenario for levels 1—4 by Adam Meyers features exactly what it says in the title, as the PCs travel to Katapesh to assist goblin merchant Yigrig Moneymaker with a problem; his expedition to build a bridge between two promising trading partners is being attacked by lions! The heroes will have to figure out what’s causing the cats to hunt down the goblin expedition, which is led by Yigrig’s son, Zig.

We’re off to Iobaria for our second scenario, Pathfinder Society (second edition) Scenario #1-15: The Blooming Catastrophe, by Mikhail Rekun. In this adventure for levels 1—4, the Pathfinder Society has their hands full as a new threat has come to Finedar Forest—a rapidly growing population of corrupted leshys that seem Abyss-bent on attacking anyone who enters the forest. This nature-themed adventure will be especially appropriate for heroes aligned with the Verdant Wheel faction, whose leader, Urwal, is on-site to try to restore the forest and figure out why the leshys seem to hate anyone wearing a wayfinder.

This month’s quest by Dennis Muldoon is Pathfinder Society (second edition) Quest #7: A Curious Claim, for levels 3–6. The PCs must travel to Druma to investigate an insurance claim for an “accidentally lost shipment” that some suspect may not have been as accidental as it seems. The PCs will have to get past both aquatic undead as well as agents dispatched by one of the Society’s major rivals if they hope to get to the bottom of the matter.

Nope. I can see her hand on her hip. Most of the arm is behind her.

I believe her right hand is resting on the potion at her hip.

1-15 might be the first time I've ever laughed out loud reading a scenario. It's really goofy in a fun way

Anybody else having issues with the purchasing of these scenarios? My subscription didn't process yesterday, because it looks like it's trying to buy 1-04 and 1-05 (which I have) rather than 1-14/1-15. I picked up 1-14 independently yesterday, but today trying to buy 1-15 gives me an error when I try to add it to my cart.

With next week being spotlight & cons, does that mean we're at least two weeks from hearing about either ACP or AoA sanctioning updates?

Well. I'm going to guess sooner given 1-15. Why did you tempt me so Organized Play? Why???? You tempt me with something I cannot have.

Edit:
In case it's not obvious Im joking but was hoping for an update.

Same here, while my regular subscriptions (Gamemastery guide & AP) were fulfilled without a hitch, the society adventures didn't show up.

Did I miss an announcement somewhere that society matierla is only for lvl 1-4? Can we please get some non 1-4 lvl material? I get that that is where the majority of players are but the 13 of 16 scenarios are 1-4 adventures vs 3 for 5+ is getting old.

There has been two 3-6 adventures released and one Quest. This month's quest is a 3-6. And the two scenarios set for release at the end of March are both 3-6.

Given that a new player (one without any playtest points) would only fairly recently have even possibly have made it to level 5 (having played virtually ALL of the 1-4 scenarios and quests) I think that it is TOTALLY reasonable for Paizo to be concentrating on the 1-4 scenarios to the extent it is.

Those of us who started with a character or two at level 2 or 3 are the exception and not the rule. PFS really should NOT be catering to us. We get to try multiple characters and start them at level 2 when we get to multiclass :-). That is reward enough

Maybe I am just misusing this material. If the intent here is that these are only for society players that start at 0 points and restart over after hitting lvl 4 then so be it. I guess I am the odd man out.

As there has only been 1 module and the full APs published, I presumed (incorrectly it looks) that these were adventures to be used by a multitutde of PF GMs.

That's not the intent at all, these adventures can be used by any PF GM but they are primarily for the Pathfinder Society, which is Paizos organised play program, not something that has people start over at level 4 at all, it is in fact intended to eventually go to very high levels (ultimately 20!). Given that a lot of people like to try a different character every now and then since the system is still relatively brand new and that many people don't have the time or chance to play everything available it is very reasonable that they are focusing on lower level play to allow everyone to get started.

As mentioned above there are already multiple higher level (3-6) scenarios out and more coming, if someone is playing through everything and assigning module credit, etc to a character then yes they are going to be way ahead of the curve and find that there's not too much more to play right now. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to start a new character and try out a different class, or if that's not something of interest then start GMing some, you can help others enjoy and level up their characters to be able to play with the high level ones once there is more content and also get some chronicles to start a character at a higher level when you do decide on a concept that interests you, everybody wins!

Alternatively, if you're in a home game and not playing in the Society then you (or the GM) can use their own material or some of the very good third party adventures to have more scenarios to play, so ultimately there's lots of options, hopefully one works for you :)

Some people:

• play/GM multiple times a week
• play a handful of times a year
• play only scenarios
• make sure they have PCs for all Subtiers
• play a single PC as long as they can

Paizo can't cater to all of these playstyles at once.

Their current setup, releasing 2 Starfinder scenarios and 2 Pathfinder scenarios every month, works for game stores that can host once a week.

And both Campaigns have ample Repeatable options for those who want to play more often.

I think it's the most workable compromise for all parties involved.

There will be a total of eight 3-6 and one 5-8 scenario released through June of this year. I am looking forward to seeing what they offer at Gen Con. I think they will probably offer two 1-4s and one 3-6 along with one other one. I doubt they have a 5-8 there but who knows? I am hoping we have two specials for PFS2. I know I will be making sure I get to run any and all PFS2 specials at Gen Con.

Because it's only been about half a year since P2's release (hard to believe!), we've been focusing mostly on 1-4 adventures since those are the ones that most easily introduce people to the new system and because most Society characters just won't be at those higher levels yet. As we move into the second half of the system's debut year, you'll start to see some higher-tier adventures get added into the mix--as some people have noted, this month's quest and both of the Perennial Crown scenario's next month are 3-6s.

That scenario *might* draw me to GM for PF2 (at least for the Lions one).

I had a great deal of fun with Yigrig in Treason's Chains.
