Duelist questions

As a Duelist you add your Intelligence to AC adding to your Dexterity modifier per level of Duelist due to the Canny Defense ability. If you already have maxed out the amount of Dexterity to AC due to a maxed out armor Dex bonus with your original Dex, you can not add to the AC of your character's Dexterity modifier with your Intelligence modifier going over the maximum Dex bonus. Is this correct, or can you go beyond the max Dex bonus in this case with your intelligence modifier added to Dexterity?

My next question, Since you are adding to Dexterity with your Intelligence modifier with the addition of the Weapon Finesse feat are you increasing your to "hit" to hit the enemy. That is adding to the Dexterity modifier with your Intelligence modifier due to the Duelist Canny Defense ability to attack your enemies?

"When wearing light or no armor and not using a shield, a duelist adds 1 point of Intelligence bonus (if any) per duelist class level to her Dexterity bonus to modify Armor Class while wielding a melee weapon."

First off, no you cannot go over max dex with Canny Defence. It says you are adding to your dexterity modifier and would therefore be limited by the normal things that limit dex to AC.

Second, no you cannot add your intelligence to hit. Canny defence specifically says "dexterity bonus to modify Armor Class". It only applies to AC.

Aww man, if they redo the Duelist class they probably will say that the intelligent bonus is a dodge bonus instead of a Dexterity bonus. With a max dex bonus to armor it sorta defeats the purpose of having the benefit of adding your intell to your dex.

Not really, it all depends on your stats and what kind of armor you are wearing. If your dex is absolutely maxed out then yea its not worth it, but if you arent, its possible to fill out armor you normally couldnt. Nothing like having a high strength character that hits the max dex on a Mithril Chain shirt after all.

My intent was to go six levels of fighter then pop into Duelist so, I can get into the prestige class as early as possible. The third level ability of a fighter gives extra dex to the max armor bonus for Dexterity.

I eventually will have a mithril breast plate so, I will have a max dex bonus of six. I have a +4 dex bonus now and will increase it to five at eighth level. I have a plus one intelligence to add to AC once I pop into Duelist.

I will be maxed out at eighth level at the max armor bonus and I intended to get a belt of dexterity. I guess I'll get a belt of strength +2 instead and increase my damage output by one. I have the Weapon Finesse feat so, my "to hit" won't increase.

But why not? Why would AC bonuses granted by Int be limited by armor? Being able to fight smarter shouldn't be limited on your agility. It's only going to be a couple of points for most folks anyway. Dualist appeals to precisely because it gives me a way to keep increasing my AC after I've hit the max allowable for my armor.

I'm afraid that the int bonus becomes a Dex bonus and therein lies the problem. A dex bonus is limited by the max dex bonus of armor. IF it were turned into a dodge bonus rather than int bonus you would not have any problem raising your AC. The int bonus changed into a dex bonus is not special, it has to be some kind of bonus, and they made it a dex bonus.

I would keep a necklace of natural armor and a ring of deflection handy. In the campaign guide, it says you can increase to the next plus of an item if you have the prestige points to qualify for it. That is what I plan to do. The other ring is a ring of freedom of movement when I can get around to it. Otherwise, rings of shielding or evasion will have to suffice.

As for armor, the mithril breast plate is what I will eventually get. I plan on having six levels of fighter so, I'll get armor training and with any armor I can raise my max dex armor bonus by one; Therefore, I will have a max dex of +6. With raising my armor bonus with the qualifying prestige points, I will raise my armor bonus to the next plus. I will eventually get a belt of dex to raise my init, to hit with my rapier since I have weapon finesse, and my saves.
