what does EL (#) stand for?

Adventures

I have been playing a long time but have not DM in awhile or used a module. I am reviewing the Crown of the Kobold King. In it is EL (# and a number)

what is this referencing?

Feeling like I failed my Int. roll :/

CotKK is a 3.5 module, and EL (Encounter Level) is a term from 3.5 mechanics.

"EL" means Encounter Level, which was used in 3.5 modules to reflect the challenge of the described encounter. Pathfinder RPG modules use "CR" (Challenge Rating) instead.

Pre-Pathfinder, CR was for individual monsters and Encounter Level (EL) was a CR-like statistic for encounters that combined monster CR, situational modifiers to the difficulty of the encounter (like fighting on a bridge over lava), and other dangerous parts of the encounter like traps.

Nowadays, it's all just called CR. Just use the listed EL as if it were a CR.

Thankyou all for the quick response :)

Now that this has been mentioned, I realized that I've never seen a Paizo adventure that is written for PFRPG. How do they list the encounters, does it list the opposing creatures without reference to the "difficulty" of the encounter? Just curious!

In the same location as the 3.5 adventures listed an (EL N), the PFRPG adventures list a (CR N). Otherwise they work exactly the same way, with each creature being listed with its own individual CR.

For instance:
Ambush (CR 5)
<description>
Human Rogue 2 (4) - CR 1
