Only War: The Forsaken

Game Master Eradico Pravus

Cast from a blighted homeworld, the Guardsmen of Company F fight for the Imperium of Man along the war-torn Spinward Front. Despised by enemies, disparaged by allies, they have no one to trust except themselves for they are... The Forsaken!

Bal,

The first missile that hit the shuttle was a "pre-initiative" attack (sorry if it felt a little "rail-roady") so the Ork will fire round one if possible. If you are attempting suppressing fire, remember that Orks have the Mob Rule trait which makes them less resistant to pinning while in cohesion.

Something else to consider when it comes to determining damage:

"After the hit location has been determined, the attacker
determines the Damage dealt by his attack. Each weapon has
a Damage listing, which is usually a die roll, plus or minus
a number. Roll the appropriate die and apply any indicated
modifiers. Finally, if the attack involved a melee weapon, add
the attacker’s Strength Bonus. The result is the Damage total.
For all attack rolls, count the Degrees of Success. The attacker
may choose to replace the result on a single Damage die with the
number of Degrees of Success from his attack roll.
If the attack
inflicts more than one die of Damage, the attacker may replace
the result on one die of his choice with the Degrees of Success
from the attack roll. If a natural 10 is rolled on any Damage die,
there is a chance of Righteous Fury."

So without any assistance/modifiers from your Comrade, Scope has succeeded in the following fashion:

BS 43, +10 (standard attack), medium range (+0) = 19/53, four degrees success. Adding Dot's modifier for round one would make it five degrees of success. The advantage from the rule citation from above is that if you rolled a low number on your damage roll, you could then substitute a four (w/out Dot) or a five (w/Dot) to increase the damage rating.

Of course the Ork might make an untrained Dodge making this moot. ;)

I probably won't be updating till tonight. Bal let me know if you want to do differently than the post above, otherwise I'll add in Dot's modifier for round 1.

Male Half-Orc 9th lvl Cleric, 4th lvl Ninja, 1st lvl Black Flame Zealot

Rather try and take the Ork out now, and use Dot's 1 degree of success for me. Will skip on the suppressive fire since its effects won't help in my ultimate goal which is stopping the Rokkit Launcher from being fired again.

Wow, OK, Righteous Fury... Here's how it's treated in Only War!

From the beta:

RIGHTEOUS FURY
When rolling Damage after a successful attack, if any die rolled
results in a natural 10 (rolling the 10 result on a 10 sided die),
a particularly bloody and spectacular hit may be inflicted (this
also includes a result of 10 when rolling 1d5 for Damage). After
resolving the effects of the hit, one of two things may happen.
If the attack dealt Damage after being reduced by armour and
Toughness Bonus (see Step Five, below), then the shot becomes
more severe. The attacker then rolls 1d5 and consults the Critical
Hit Table appropriate to the Damage type and location of the
original attack. The target suffers all effects listed. However, the
target does not count as having suffered a Critical Hit. In other
words, if he takes Damage during later turns it will affect his
Wounds, not directly stack onto worsening critical effects. Talents
that modify Critical Damage (such as Crack Shot and True Grit)
do not modify the critical effects generated by Righteous Fury,
and these critical effects do not stack if a target suffers Righteous
Fury multiple times. Each roll is applied as a separate effect.
Alternatively, if the attack does not do any Damage once
reduced by armour and Toughness Bonus, then the attack Deals
1 point of Damage, not reduced by armour or Toughness. This is
the extent of the Righteous Fury effect for this attack; the victim
does not suffer a roll on a Critical Hit Table. This represents some
weapons simply not being potent enough to deal major Damage,
but still able to do harm through a “lucky hit.”

Righteous Fury for Player Characters and NPCs
In ONLY WAR, Righteous Fury is something that both Player
Characters and NPCs can inflict and suffer from. This means
if a Chaos Cultist shoots a Player Character and rolls a 10 for
Damage, then the Player Character suffers a 1d5 Critical result.
This makes combat gritty, dangerous, and more dynamic, as the
characters can suffer from flavourful (and often awful) Critical
effects, and may leave combat with interesting new scars.
However, in order to ensure that combat does not bog down
too much, when a low level NPC (a faceless soldier or minion,
usually an unnamed NPC not central to the story plot) suffers
Righteous Fury, he is simply slain instead. This allows for faster
paced combat, and also “lucky shots” on the part of the PCs.
Finally, if the GM desires, he can choose to reserve Righteous
Fury for Player Characters and high level NPCs only (so only
named, important NPCs can inflict it on the characters). This
makes for a faster-paced, more “epic” game as the PCs may
easily shrug off most attacks. It also ensures that combat moves
more quickly. However, the GM should probably refrain
from doing this unless he finds his combat bogging down
excessively. After all, it’s not Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay if
the player characters don’t suffer a few scars along the way!

For our campaign NPCs (enemy included) can score Righteous Fury hits.

So unless I'm reading this incorrectly, Bal's Righteous Damage roll does not stack additional damage (in this case the listed result did not include additional damage) but instead gives the result I posted in the IC thread.

OK, sorry things are a little bogged down but it's good we can all learn the mechanics, rulebook or no. Again, everybody, if my interpretations are in error give me a shout!

In looking at the rules there's some latitude in that enemy mooks can simply be declared dead by a Righteous Fury attack. I guess in this particular instance since "Ugfang" was a named opponent we will play it out as posted. The ork will be of little consequence (perhaps) with the loss of its arm. I'm open to suggestions of interpretation for the sake game economy vs. flair.

Aiming as a full action gives a +20, half-action is +10.

Don't worry Hathin, the Sarge isn't going to give you enough time for any lip, heh!

Just a note Catman, per Only War p. 177:

Full Auto Burst
Type: Half Action
Subtype: Attack, Ranged
The character grips his gun tightly and unleashes a furious burst of fully automatic gunfire at his enemies. The attacker must be wielding a ranged weapon capable of fully automatic fire to take this Action. If the character has a pistol in each hand, both capable of fully automatic fire, he may fire both with this Action (see Two-Weapon Fighting, page 184). The attacker makes a Ballistic Skill Test with a –10 bonus to his attack. A dice result of 94 to 00 indicates the weapon has Jammed (see Weapon Jams, page 187). If he succeeds, he scores one hit with his weapon per Degree of Success. The number of extra hits scored in this manner cannot exceed the weapon’s fully automatic rate of fire. Extra hits can either be allocated to the original target or any other targets within two metres, provided none of the new targets would have been harder to hit than the original target. If extra hits are allocated to the same target, use Table 8–2: Multiple Hits to determine the extra Hit Locations. Remember, the first hit is always determined by reversing the numbers of the dice result made to perform the Test (see The Attack, page 181). If the character is armed with two weapons, and has the appropriate Talents, he may make a secondary attack with his other weapon as part of this Action. See Two-Weapon Fighting on page 184.

humm did not know it was a half action. thanks for that clarification. I was hoping to get a couple of successes but I could not get 1, ah well.

Update: sending a quick note from work to let everyone know that my home internet access is kaput right now. Might be a few days until I'm up and running. If I don't get a quick fix, I will try and update from work on Monday.

Rook, feel free to ghost-write for me in the Oremor and Jericho campaigns.

Thanks

Update: Looks like my home modem is shot. In the process of getting a new one. Hopefully will be able to be back to regular posting soon. Thanks.

I have been there, Eradico. Our modem was so old the company didn't even awknowledge the existence of it.

Lorm, that's hilarious.

Mine crapped out after five years or so. My new one should be here Thursday so I'm hoping to resolve round 1/start round 2 by Friday.

All right, team, I'm finally up and running again! Thanks!

Hathin will be flying out of Malaysia and back into Australia on 28th September and will be visiting family for a couple of weeks through to the 15th of October. While I should still be able to check in periodically it will likely cause a few interruptions and my posts may involve a little more brevity than usual.

If needed at any point feel free to keep things moving with a DMPC :)

No problem, Mark, thanks for the heads-up. Sounds like a great trip!

OK, will do although when the time comes I'll give you a day or so to post. I'm sure you won't mind if (in your absence) I have Lark sharing high tea and crumpets with the Commissar. ;)

Journey mercies!

Heh - I doubt Lark would know of this xenotech device known as a crum-pet... he'd probably interpret it somewhat like:

Hathin's sardonic smirk pitches a tent upon his face and beds in for the weekend as he slams a closed fist into his opposite palm "Oh aye, I'll give the Commissar a Crumpet-ing he won't soon forget"

lol!

Hate to be the one to bring this up but:

p. 120
Pen (Penetration): Reflects how good the weapon is at cutting through armour. When a shot or blow from this weapon hits a target, reduce the target’s Armour Points by the weapon’s Penetration, with results of less than 0 counting as 0 (i.e. the armour provides no protection at all). Then work out Damage as normal. So, for example, if a weapon with a Penetration of 3 hits a target with 5 Armour Points, the target will only count as having 2 Armour Points against any Damage the hit causes. Note that Penetration has no effect on fields, but it does affect cover.

Penetration has no effect on Toughness, only AP.

Arg! No worries, Ellipsis, I appreciate your clarification and prefer that you continue to correct any mistakes you see.

Will make the change OC in a bit. Makes these Orks tougher, that's for sure.

I wish I could say that I hate you for it lol, but any info regarding the different color schemes and if it was such a things as already "divided" by chapters with their own colors schemes or some sorts of insignia that basically gives birth to most second founding chapters, or the mention of creating IC characters for each legion compared to the regular SM chapter IC Captain for example? Is there any other "special and unique units" besides the flying naughty bikes that don't look anything like the artwork we are used to seeing.

Male Half-Orc 9th lvl Cleric, 4th lvl Ninja, 1st lvl Black Flame Zealot

There is so much to this book I'm not even sure where to begin. So I will just sum up otherwise I will be writing a book myself. It contains the Primarchs, Special Characters, and a Specialist Unit for each of the Four Legions in the book with plenty of background. It takes you through the Istvaan 3 Campaign stap by step. You can take tanks in squadrons. The Fellblade is different from what BOLS had written. You get the Typhon Siege Tank, Cereberus Heavy Tank Destroyer, Spartan Assault Tank, etc, etc etc.

You get IC's like Legion Praetor, Legion Centurion, etc. Its several codices, and a game unto itself. Even has its own unique allies Matrix which includes the Mechanicus.

Bite the bullet and get the book. I first I worried because of the price, but after reading it. Its worth every dime.

Oremor Affliction, Sons of Jericho players:
Cross posted from the Oremor Affliction

I'm not ending the games.

I felt that should start things off, so there is no misunderstanding with what is to follow.

First of all, I'd just like to apologize to everyone about my absence of late, I feel guilty for not posting something sooner, but I had every intention that the hiatus would be a much shorter one.

Truth is, I may have been ignoring the warning signs that I was getting a little burnt out GM'ing for a while now, and once I realized what was happening, I had planned on taking a few days off and returning again fairly quickly, but life has a habit of interfering with the best laid plans, and the time between my posts just kept getting larger.

The creative juices just weren't flowing for me of late, and I didn't want to 'post just to post', as I kind of hold myself to a high standard with this hobby, and felt you guys deserved better. I suppose I should give myself a pat on the back, three years in one PbP game is a pretty good accomplishment, as is juggling another game at the same time for a year plus, but all I can think of is that I'm letting everyone down.

I've reached out to both Bal and Eradico to get their take on things, and have to thank them for their support and advice, both have been tremendous.

So, rather than ruin something that we have all spent a long time building and working at, I'm going to take a hiatus, a sabbatical if you will, from both games, to recharge my batteries. My intention is to begin both games anew just after Christmas to finish what we started way back in October of 2009. I think we all have a personal stake of sorts in where the story is going, so I hope you will all be patient with me, and stay along for the ride, I promise it won't disappoint.

On the other hand, I totally understand if anyone wants to leave the game due to this interruption. There definitely won't be any hard feelings on my end, as this is my decision, and I understand that not everyone wants to wait around for a game, free time is a valuable thing for most of us in the PbP world. I just ask that you give me the head's up before we start again, either through email (Paizo messager, or rookseye at yahoo dot com) or in OOC here.

I consider you all friends, and am constantly amazed and delighted by the enjoyment that your individual interactions with these shared stories have brought me over the past few years, taking them in directions I never would have foreseen at the outset; making them your own, a collaborative imaginative experience that can't be topped in my humble opinion by any other form of entertainment. Thanks for making everything that has come to pass thus far in the Oremor Affliction and the Sons of Jericho cooler than my wildest hopes at the outset.

I will probably be posting something intermittently in both IC and OOC for both games during the hiatus to keep the threads alive, so there will be some activity, but I plan to keep things largely quiet in the meantime. If anyone would like to discuss either game in OOC too, I'll be checking those posts pretty regularly, so feel free to update your characters and spend the most recent experience awards granted. You'll be seeing me in Eradico's Only War campaign as well, as Sarge, so I won't be totally off the grid.

Thanks in advance for understanding guys, I'm looking forward to beginning fresh in a couple of months and returning to the campaigns, I hope you'll all be there with me!

In roughly twelve hours I will willingly subject myself to an eight hour period of physical exertion, sleep deprivation and general sanity slippage.... that is to say I'm flying down to Australia with two kids on a red eye. I shall be doing the christmas thing, familial visitation thing and even attending a ten year University re-union... which should be interesting to say the least.

That will mean that I shall not be my usual self when it comes to internet connectivity and PbP response. I should still get online here and there, but it's unlikely to be every day - and even when I do time will be short so you will have to endure a lesser amount of my usual sesquipedalian loquaciousness. If at any time you feel I'm holding things up, feel free to DMPC... or you know have Lark light something up with burning plasma.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Krazy Kwanzaa or even Positive Emotion Non-Religious Holiday Vacation Day... depending upon your own predisposed proclivities. I look forward to further electronically shared adventures in the post-Mayan calendar New Year.

Mark, enjoy your travels. You have my condolences as I know what it's like to travel with children.

Lorm, I ordered Only War from Amazon last night and should get it just after Christmas. Excited to get my hands on a hard-copy.

Everyone, I get a couple of weeks off for the holidays and should be able to devote a bit more time to the game. I'm sorry for the sporadic posting and certainly did not intend for the first combat to be taking so long.

Good luck on your pilgrimage, Mark, hope your trip goes well. I am still in the ranks of the cowering parents who stay close to home when it comes to long plane trips, my 7 year old would be fine but I would fear for the safety of all if I had to bring along my 3 year old for a long flight.

A Happy and safe holiday season to everyone, and have no fear, Eradico, there will soon be two more games posting simultaneously with yours, so it should definitely alleviate some of the pressure of being the only 40K fix in town. The respite has done wonders for my creative juices, and I hope to be posting in both DH and DW very soon!
