Starfinder To Land On Amazon Alexa!

Tuesday, December 10, 2019

For months now, we at Paizo have been holding onto an incredible secret: Starfinder, the science-fantasy game that mixes dragons with robotics and magic missiles with high-tech hacking, is coming to Amazon Alexa!

Let me repeat that. This is not a drill.

On December 16, a voice-based version of the Starfinder Roleplaying Game will be available for free on Alexa devices through Amazon’s cloud-based voice service. We’re giving you a heads-up on this release so that you can track down any of the Alexa-supported devices and, if you want, play the moment the free episode drops!

At launch, just say "Alexa, play Starfinder!" on any Alexa-enabled device. You’ll beam straight into an adapted version of “Scoundrels in the Spike,” the adventure I wrote for the Starfinder Beginner Box.

The adaptation script was written by none other than James L. Sutter, former Starfinder Creative Director and an amazing author whose work really makes this voice experience shine. Incredible voice actors, sound effects, and music further make this game sing. Specifically, when Starfinder Creative Director Robert G. McCreary and I heard the rich soundscapes of Absalom Station and felt the tension of combat with space goblins, we were gleefully astonished. This project has brought Starfinder’s world to life just as we imagined, and for me it was a truly awe-inspiring experience.

The rules Alexa uses to run the adventure are similarly adapted from the Beginner Box. Starfinder fans will recognize the player character options as Iseph the iconic operative, Quig the iconic mechanic, and Navasi the iconic envoy. What’s more, Raia the iconic technomancer can serve as a best friend and sidekick in these adventures. Simply put, there’s a lot to recognize and love if you’re already a fan of Starfinder. If you’re new to the game or even to tabletop RPGs in general, this experience is a fantastic gateway to a lifetime of adventure and fun

Beyond the pilot episode, Paizo and Amazon have big plans to bring more paid episodes of the Starfinder voice game to Alexa. But we’ll save that reveal for another blog—and probably a press release or two.

Before I smoke-bomb away from this exciting announcement, I’d like to just gush for a moment about how much of a dream this project was, both as a creative and as a manager. As we’ve spun up this initiative, I’ve gotten to work with some fantastic folks at Amazon, whose excitement for this project has left me energized and astounded at the power of tabletop storytelling across all media.

I’ve also gotten to work extensively with Rob and Sutter on this project. It’s been like a wonderful reunion of sorts, bringing me back to the days of working with those guys on the Starfinder Core Rulebook—and it’s made me realize how much I miss working with Sutter, especially since we both have a tendency to shriek and cackle when we get excited in creative meetings. I miss making that beautiful music with you, James.

Nostalgia aside, the entire Starfinder Alexa project has involved great team members, and the Starfinder team as well as folks all across Paizo have done a great job giving us feedback on the in-development game and generally supporting us along the way.

Now, time for that smoke bomb! Check out “Scoundrels in the Spike” when it drops, and stay tuned for more Paizo-Amazon news soon to come!

This is crazy.

Now, how do I stop my kids from shouting, "Alexa, stop! Alexa, play christmas music!" mid-game?

So is this like an audiobook of the adventure or is it like a digital gm running the adventure for you?

So...just trash talk it the regular way?

Having made the obvious joke, I am intrigued by this. It seems like a neat idea.

I hope the completion of this product has freed up some time to work on a new FAQ.

I don't have an echo device. Can I download the amazon Alexa app to my phone and play this?

Will there be future adventures with the full SF ruleset incorporated, or will this only use the beginner box rules?

Glad to see folks are excited about this! It's been a fascinating project to work on, and I'm really thankful Paizo decided to bring me in to write it. As Amanda so kindly noted, it has felt a bit like getting the band back together. :)

Yes. The data connection needs to be strong. Wifi is preferable.

Is there a trailer?

So far it reminds me of the ye olde "choose your own adventure books".

You can play this on your phone using the Alexa app, although it can be sensitive to your cell phone signal and/or wifi.

This is going to be great for players who want to get into the TTRPG hobby but have no experienced players/GMs in their area to turn to. Not everyone lives driving distance from a Starfinder Society Lodge!

Just to be clear, while the rules are adapted from the Beginner Box, it's a much simpler experience than that—but it is also a bit more sophisticated than a Choose Your Own Adventure book.

This isn't a tool to replace your GM in a full Starfinder campaign, or replicate all the options from a 500-page book; it's a new and different way to experience Starfinder gameplay.

This is really interesting & innovative. Congrats, y'all!

Sure, do this after I've left Amazon to go back to school... Ahem, I mean this sounds great.

Now I can say, "Computer, play Starfinder" and not have my Echo say, "Hmm. I can't seem to do that."

It'll also make picking up those Echo Buds or traveling to games with Echo Auto more interesting...

This is very neat, and a fun new idea for how to experience RPGs. I'm very much looking forward to checking this out!

Very cool idea! Kudos to all.

Second Seekers (Roheas)

I really think that just on a basic level I don't understand what this is going to be like because I don't think it's even possible for Alexa to do as Lisa and Amanda are suggesting.

I am sort of interested but it feels like its being way oversold (No Dm! No Problem! No way?) but maybe I'm wrong.

Grand Lodge

Huh. I may have to try this out at some point!

Silver Crusade

I am looking forward to hearing some reviews about this one, but I fear that I am really not the target audience for this product, though if it lets people that otherwise could not enjoy the hobby do so, more power to them.

Even potentially giving Amazon more money or data than they already have would not be a dealbreaker, (though as a European, I am not thrilled about the deal they made with Luxemburg) and have bought audiobooks on Audible yesterday.

Actually, that might be my request, can we get some proper Starfinder audiobooks? Some of the Pathfinder audiobooks were so amazing that I ended up buying somewhere I had already read the novel years ago.

Will there be an option to simulate actual RPG game play in which every once in a while you get to an area of the rules that aren't very clear and you get to debate with the GM on how the rules are supposed to work for that situation? Haha. All kidding aside, good luck. Probably not for me but glad you are trying to think of new ways of delivering your product.

"So, um, er Alexa? I have a twenty-nine to, ah, reprogram the computer to like me. Does that, um, succeed?"

Are there any plans or information about the international market? Will this only be available in the US?
And will there be localized versions (unlikely, I know, but doesn't hurt to ask).

The curious can look at this interview about the Alexa Project between Jason "Jake" Tondro and James Sutter. I was intrigued to discover that Amazon approached the Starfinder team, rather than the other way around. Amazon is a savvy sniffer of trends, and always looks to be on the cutting edge. That they chose Starfinder as a vehicle is a very good sign indeed.

This is buck wild and I love it!

Will definitely be interested in trying this out when it launches!

Not my bag but congrats on the partnership! The more Starfinder out there the better!

Neat and all, but how about we get some of those additional resource updates for the main money makers of the game, society. How does it take MONTHS to do a few yes/no questions. Homegames only need 1 copy of anything for any amount of people, but in society, every single player must own every single book they plan on using, even if it's only like 1 small thing from the book. Lots of money being lost not supporting society faster. They advertise the game more than anyone else. Hard to advertise content that never goes into play.

It does take awhile when they’re understaffed. Less people, less work able to be done.

Also source for the “main moneymakers” claim (if you only buy something when it’s sanctioned and it’s not sanctioned you literally haven’t given them any money so...)?

Gotta say, I’m so psyched about this. Amazon approaching Paizo about this is proof of how well Starfinder is spreading in the RPG world and beyond, and how versatile a franchise it is. This avenue brings even more people the opportunity to join in on the bandwagon (including people who have never even played a tabletop game before). That’s aside from the fact I’m just so psyched to see Starfinder adapted to a new medium. Choice of Game adventures have been long time addictions of mine, and getting to explore the world of Starfinder through those lens (with music and voice actors!) still feels like a dream I’ll wake up from any moment. I had pegged something like this as a fantasy until just now. Watching gaming evolve is so gratifying.

Also, sweet sentiments Amanda. Glad to see James and the team goofing around again. You’re all adorable.

I'm an avid Society player and GM, but Alexa talks to way more people than I do; further, she could theoretically get five novas before I get my second, and I've been running Society games for a year and a half already.

Frankly, as much as I'm probably not going to use this, and want the COM sanctioned YESTERDAY, I can't deny that this is way bigger news than any Additional Resources update.

Let's avoid derailing this announcement with other issues. Thank you.

Related, an Amazon Echo Dot offer for $0.99 (plus Amazon Music subscription that you can cancel) is going on right now.

I’m super excited for this!
