Undead Threats

Friday, September 21, 2018

Two weeks ago, we announced the next set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic miniatures from WizKids, Ruins of Lastwall, set for release next spring. But you don't have to wait much longer to get new undead minis to torment players in your Pathfinder campaigns! We have a bunch of them coming in Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker next month!

First among them is the Cyclops Lich, a major NPC villain in the Kingmaker campaign who first appeared on the cover of Pathfinder Adventure Path #33: The Varnhold Vanishing. A Large rare figure, this massive undead menace is sure to leave a lasting impression in your game.

Next, we have another large undead abomination, the hideous Soul Gorger. This rare figure is a staple of fantasy RPGs, and gains its power from the souls of spellcasters it has devoured, which now reside in its chest cavity, grasping to escape.

SOUL GORGER

At the other end of the power spectrum, we have the Bloody Skeleton, a Medium common figure that will help GMs everywhere bolster their undead hordes.

Not all undead are so corporeal, and ghosts have long been a pillar of both fantasy and horror stories. The Elf Ghost below can serve as either a ghostly elf pirate or any other lingering spirit trapped in its material existence until the PCs can help it to its final rest. An uncommon figure, customers who purchase a case should get a few of them, allowing for the overwhelming challenge of facing more than one of these menacing foes!

While it's technically a piece of set dressing, this set's Scarecrow makes a great red herring in horror campaigns. It totally won't animate and climb off that post to ravage anyone who gets lost in a corn maze, I promise. Players and GMs familiar with the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path may find other, more ghoulish uses for this piece as well!

Finally this week, we look at the Pathfinder: Kingmaker companion with the strongest undead connection: the undead servant of Urgathoa, Jaethal. The elven inquisitor makes an excellent scythe-wielding elf PC or NPC, and needn't necessarily be undead herself. Jaethal, Elf Inquisitor is a Medium uncommon figure.

We had a bit of a delay in past Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker blogs, but we're back on schedule now! Check back next week for a look at some of the bandits that give the River Kingdoms their reputation of lawlessness.

Those are some awesome undead! The timing on the Soul Gorger (Devourer) is a tad late, but I like this version better than the look of the Waterdeep Dragon Heist Devourer.

Ooh! Really excited for all of these! ^_^

I am glad that the blog is back, even if six minis is the absolute minimum required to make sure we see every render before release.
We will probably see real miniatures pictures somewhere else before the last blog though - I'd rather see them here.

Cyclops Lich: The Rarity is perfect because you only need one.
It looks like this 9 foot tall creature is too small, but at least that's consistant with the Skull & Shackles #34 Cyclops, which was a runt too. I'm not excited by small giants.

Devourer: This is the size a large humanoid should be! Also, right rarity, as this undead is only encountered solitary.
I don't know why the perfect illustration from the Bestiary was changed, but this looks much better than the D&D Waterdeep version, but not as good as the "Unhallowed" version. Still a solid mini!

Bloody Skeleton: Incredible! This is a common? The sculpt is superdetailed and the paintjob is perfect. 5 stars! 5-6 in a case.

Elf Ghost: Same as the skeleton: just great. Uncommon rarity should get case buyers 3-4.

Scarecrow: Wow, this is a very useful & very good looking dressing!
Also: nice RotR book #2 reference. ;-)

Elf Inquisitor: The 5th of the 11 companions from the Kingmaker computer game looks great and finally we get a great scythe wielding female.
If the weapon isn't going to be bendy, this will be a winner!

We have now seen 28 renders of 52, among them 8 of 12 larges.

I am assuming the three small companion characters (Gnome Alchemist, Halfling Bard & Goblin Rogue) will all be commons, the Human Ranger will be an uncommon & Valerie will be a rare, as will be next weeks Stag Lord. That leaves only one large rare mini unaccounted for.

Kressel, Okse & Dovan from AP#31 would make good bandit minis as would the Tiger Lord Barbarians from AP#34.

There is now a preview of january 2019s "Pathfinder Battles: Playtest Heroes" boxed set, which i wrote about yesterday:

Icv2

The proportions of the renders look very off, especially Valeros seems to have a giant head.
Harsk - now a blonde - has a bodybuilder's build with too small legs & overmuscular upper body.
Also Merisiel's sword is way to big & Fumbus is so overburdened with equipment that he would be reduced in movement.
I expect the actual minis to look much more realistic, as all "Iconic Heroes Set" boxes minis looked much better.

SRP for this six-minis box is $34.99.

Second Seekers (Roheas)

Oh my goodness, great stuff here. Bloody Skeleton is gonna be hot.

That scarecrow bruv....

Dark Archive

I find it very probable that we'll also get a scarecrow construct creature, now that we have a scarecrow dressing - same as with the two gargoyle minis in this set.

I wonder what the four large minis still unrevealed could be...

Here are the contenders:

-Lizard King
-Crocodile
-Rock Troll
-Chimera (red dragon head)
-Ahuizotl
-Derghodemon
-Dread Zombie Cyclops (9 in AP#34)
-Female Centaur with shield & spear
-The misbegotten Troll
-Four-armed Frost Giant

Personally i'd like the Crocodile (there is one in the current D&D set, just like the Devourer), Dhergodemon, Dread Zombie Cyclops (needed en masse for the adventure) & Female Centaur. ;-)

Silver Crusade Contributor

Which ones are derghodaemons again? The ones with the skittering legs and the feeblemind noise?

I think my list is the same as yours, except I'd like any one of the Misbegotten Troll, the rock troll, the four-armed frost giant, or the chimera in place of the crocodile.

Second Seekers (Roheas)

Yeah put me down for crocodile being the most disappointing option there

Forget release date; I know I'll be cancelling my subscription if they're not all revealed before order spawn date. I know your ordering habit has been impacted by this too. I can't imagine we're the only ones.

Yes, you got that right (had to look it up), it's the spider-like one.

I agree that the crocodile is the most boring/vanilla option (and there are only two "blood cayman" in the AP), the other ones all look cooler.
That being said, it is a very basic creature (of which i have two different large ones & 1 huge from D&D & a gargantuan toy) which doesn't have a PFB version.

On the other hand, this set doesn't seems to feature animals so far (last set did), so maybe we'll get something else. ;-)

You'll probably be able to order singles (with actual minis pictures) from some online shops around 1 week before that.

I totally agree with you.
@Mark Moreland: Could you please post a list (no renders required) of the (remaining) minis in the set here?

Thanks so much, Marco.

I received some information about the Incentives less than a month ago as part of email correspondence for a previous order. The answer I received was basically in question to how the incentives would work, since there were two. (And we could basically choose one or both). At that time things were unknown, as they were still trying to get it nailed down from a technical perspective. I suggested that the information on how to sign up for them be posted both to the October order thread and one of these blog posts. I was told this would most likely happen.

Fast-forward to Monday, September 17th. I saw an October shipping thread was made. No mention of how to make sure we secure both incentives. (Not to mention how to choose only one for those that don't want both). I assume they still don't have the technical method functional yet, or surely somebody would have answered.

We are now only five days away from the Order Spawn date. I'm somewhat shocked the incentive information wouldn't be more forthcoming. If it were just a matter of having them both or none at all added to our orders, I could see things going about as normal. But if Paizo is going to end up including an option to only choose one of the Incentive Elementals, it implies there is going to be a slight change in the process. It also opens up the possibility that, given potential changes to the ordering system, there are steps we--the customer--must make to make sure we can secure both Incentives.

Pathfinder Adventure, Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

I hope that makes sense. I know I'm not explaining it well. And you seem to be one of the only other people concerned. I don't know if the answer is just obvious and I'm an idiot, or others have already found the answers elsewhere. But bottom line, the Order Spawning date is five days away. And the last information we were told, we can choose whether we get one incentive (of our choice), both incentives, or none of them.

We've always had the option of getting the incentive or not. But that was a matter of basically opting in or out, yes or no. And most folks probably haven't bothered to make a change from their initial selection. But now with a third option available, I'm left to wonder if I have to manually change anything, or, as somebody that has ordered the incentive each time in the past, am I automatically signed up to receive both? Furthermore, will my bonus apply to BOTH incentives? Or do I only get one for the discounted price and then must pay the full $34.99 for the other?

It seems this would be prudent information to share with customers. Especially five days out.

I feel like I'm living in some Twilight Zone episode. I feel like I'm completely overlooking something, or I just missed where all this information was earlier supplied. The answers Marco supplied were great, but they don't really answer anything on the actually process of what each of us must do--if anything--from a technical process. That has to come from a Paizo representative.

Also, thanks so much Marco for always supplying your knowledge of these miniatures.

I make video reviews on each miniature set. I've taken some time off for other reasons, but have started up again. I'm about a years worth of sets behind, but I'm pulling all the necessary information together for each set. What I find most helpful is all the times you mention from where the artwork a particular miniature is based on can be found within the great collection of Paizo sourcebooks and splatbooks.

Case in point: Your comment about the RotR Book #2 reference. Now I know exactly where to go to find out more information.

Having said all this, here is a challenge for you (or anyone else). Can you tell me from which book/s the artwork can be found that the following miniatures from the Jungle Of Despair set were based on:

#21 - Human Hunter
#36 - Human Ranger
#37 - Dwarf Explorer
#38 - Human Arcanist
#39 - Human Paladin Commander

I feel like some are really familiar but I can't remember from which books they come. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dark Archive

Hey Pigraven,
you are certaily no idiot, everything you wrote is quite understandable. :-)

As far as i understand it, if you don't do anything, you will receive BOTH incentives:

Sara Marie wrote:
"We will automatically generate orders for new releases including the incentives in the subscription line until you choose to cancel."

I also can't imagine that you will receive the subscriber discount to only one of the incentives, it will most likely be on both.

But it would be nice, if some official word from Paizo could be given.

Working on your minis questions, i have seen the artwork recently.
It's not from the NPC Codex, nor Villain Codex. ;-)

Dark Archive

#37 is the "Cave Stalker" copyright 2012 by Paizo - here is the link to the artists page on Deviant art.

I'll continue looking later. ;-)

#39 Human Paladin Commander is "Alexeara Cansellarion" from page 58/59 of AP#108 "Hell comes to Westcrown" - Hell's Vengeance 6.

I couldn't find the other ones in the last Adventure Paths from Hell's Vengeance to Return of the Runelords, but i too have seen the images in the last few months...

I believe the Human Arcanist is based on this art, which looks like it's from Inner Sea Races. It also looks a lot like Old-Mage Jatembe in particular, though the Pathfinder Battles line usually isn't shy about explicitly naming historical characters.

Thanks so much to Marco and Kalindlara for the help on identifying the sourcebook origin of the miniatures I asked about. It's an EXTREME help. I'll post my video review in a couple days.

Pathfinder Adventure, Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

I posted this in the October Shipping thread, but I decided to copy and paste here, too. It's got some relevant information and questions that other Pathfinder Battles subscribers might be able to help with. Or perhaps it raises some concerns others haven't thought about.

**Start repost**

It appears, as per the email announcement (and as previously stated), we will get both incentives--so consider me relieved!

However, these incentives are still not showing up for me in the My Subscriptions section. It's still showing only the case itself, listed at the $279.99 Paizo Advantage price. (The Maps, Tiles, Campaign Setting and Adventure Path are all there, too.)

Each Incentive is listed at $34.99 on their own product pages, respectively. This means the combined Incentive charge for the two Incentives will be about $17.50. (per the 75% off Incentives discount).

My question is simple: Is it an oversight that this $17.50 charge has not shown up already with the rest of the chargeable items for October? Or is this something that will be added only after the order itself has spawned? In the past, the Incentive piece HAS shown up for me in the Upcoming Shipments Subscription. But because we are now dealing with an additional Incentive piece on a single Case, have things changed?

I'm frustrated. And my frustration brings with it the following questions:

1. The case, combined with my other subscription items, shows an Estimated Shipping & Handling charge of $38.55. Does this mean the Shipping & Handling charge currently presented only includes the five subscription items I see listed, and NOT the two case Incentives?

2. If question 1 is a YES, it means I can expect not only an additional charge of $17.50 (Incentives) but also an increased shipping charge for the two incentives. Is this correct?

3. If question 2 is a YES, can you please provide me with an estimate of how much the additional shipping charge will be for the two incentives? I've only ever ordered one incentive at a time.

4. The five items currently in my cart should cost $354.40, with another $38.55 in Shipping & Handling added on for a total of $392.95. If I allow for an additional add-on of $17.50 for the two incentives, the cost for my subscription items, WITH current shipping, becomes $410.45. But how much extra shipping will be added to that current $38.55?

5. Right now I'm staring at a potential overall cost of $392.95-$410.45, depending on what answers you supply for the first few questions. But it seems at the very lease I can assume another increase thanks to the shipping & handling of the two incentives, yes?

6. The $10 in Shipping & Handling that Paizo covers on orders of $100 or more has not been applied yet, correct? If I'm not mistaken it doesn't register until an order (that qualifies) has actually spawned.

The problem isn't that I can't personally adjust for the $17.50 Incentive charge and the cost of their shipping. The problem is I have absolutely no idea how much to add to cover that cost. I'm left completely in the dark. I don't know if it's going to be $5 or $10 more to cover shipping, or if the two incentives have actually been worked into my current costs, and I'm only on the hook for $392.95 in total costs.

I now use Paizo store credit to cover my monthly subscriptions. I've found that, at least in theory, I can make sure I have enough credit for every month before the order-spawning period begins and then rest easy. Those long, often 10- to 12-day waiting periods no longer stress me out. But it's hard to know how much credit to purchase if I've got confusion in the place of an informed estimate. And it matters because the money I use for credit doesn't just support this hobby, but another as well.

I hope I don't come off too angry here. I do appreciate the work everyone has done, and especially how kind everyone has been. But it's hard not to get frustrated. I actually brought these same issues up in this very thread back on Monday, September 17th. It sounds like it went unnoticed.

Combine that with the fact I'm now basically Blind-Buying nearly half a $300.00 case of miniatures on trust alone, and the nerves start to fray even more. We've still not seen images for 24 miniatures from the forthcoming Kingmaker Battles set. I do see you'll pass along our concern in that regard to Mark when he returns, so that's good.

I'm going to post this here and probably in the Miniatures Blog. While I hope a Paizo representative can answer some of these questions, there are others with Pathfinder Battles notifications that might be able to add some insight.

Sincerely,
Pigraven

Sara Marie wrote in the october shipping thread, that Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker Singles will be on Sale on paizo.com from October 24th - November 21th.

She also wrote "The Battles subscribers will get both the Earth & Water Elemental. I'll see if we can get the product pages up for those."

She also said, that she will follow up with Mark Morrland once he is back in the office to look what can be done about revealing what the unknown minis in this set are - tomorrow being order spawning date and people only knowing 54% of what is in the set has made a lot of subscribers nervous, which is very understandable if you consider the price point.

Knowing Mark as a very nice guy and having a lot on his plate atm, he probably didn't realize it was such a tight time-window.

Now i really don't expect & need all of the missing renders shown today, personally a list of the minis and their rarity would be enough for me.
Would this be okay for the rest of you too?

I remember that in the past, a few of the minis (maybe 4-6) weren't revealed before order spawning, but never this many.

In other news:
-Three weeks until subscribers get their minis!
-Four weeks until street date! :-)

Mark showed 13 different renders two weeks ago (17 if you count the fronts & backs), i imagine writing the text is what takes up most of the time when compiling a blog.

The thing is, that some miniature subscribers want to know more about what a $300+ product contains, before deciding if they want it or not, as tomorrow the orders will be generated... :-o

Honestly I'm not sure. I think I'd be ok with at least a list. That would certainly show me that Paizo staff continue to care enough about customer concerns that they're willing to go out of their way to address them.

That said I really do love the previews and look forward to them. I've been considering canceling my subscription now that I have a pretty decent collection of miniatures going and just buying singles of things that I might need to save money, but honestly its the previews each time that make me think:

"Dang, most of these are looking really good. If I want this many (70% or more) I may as well keep the sub for one more case and get the value of the subscriber discount. Buying a 70% or more of a case as singles just isn't cost effective."

So I have been a bit disappointed by the lack of consistency with the preview lately. I hope that can be improved so that we can continue actually see the miniatures in the set before the order spawning.

Street date doesn't matter. The date that we're expected to commit to ordering does. That's tomorrow.

Basically, I'm hugely torn, because while so far the previews are nice, the only things I really "need" are the case incentives. What's been revealed have been useful enough to me (I have a huge collection) that I can - so far - justify buying them. But if the remaining two dozen sculpts aren't useful to me, the overall purchase would be foolish.

Anyway, I'll just... percolate for now.

I have a complete collection of Pathfinder Battles miniatures, less maybe a couple of this year's convention exclusives (for now). Personally, I don't see myself skipping a case just because I don't know what some of the minis are. I stuck around for the onslaught of giant minis, after all. ^_^

I hear you, and I respect your position.

I just don't need another four skeleton sculpts, zombie sculpts, anything-that-is-just-a-blob-like-a-snake/naga sculpts, or anything involving gnomes. <Grin> If this was a half-dozen sculpts not revealed, I'd shrug it off. But it's half the case.

I would love to say "I trust Paizo" on this one. It's just really hard to say that when I evidently can't trust Paizo to show me the product that has to have had images back and forth between them and WizKids for months and months now.

Meanwhile, the huge elementals keep me from making the responsible decision and voting with my wallet.

Large humanoid skeletons & zombies are another story.
Over at minisgallery there is a post named: "Why are most large undead weird races?" A lot of people, me included, would like a plain large skeleton or zombie, which could represent the basic giants.

ORDER CREATION IS NOW STARTING TOMORROW, FRIDAY 28TH!

That means Mark has a shot of keeping some of you guys on the fence about a case order from cancelling their subscriptions/preorders, by showing a massive 20+ render preview! ;-)

Also Sara had to combine both case incentives into one package because there were problems with calculating the subscription discount for 2 seperate incentives:
Kingmaker case incentives two-pack

Marco Massoudi wrote:

Turns out, Schrodinger's Credit Card may or may not have sufficient funds, depending on that.

You know what sucks? There evidently isn't even enough time for Mark - or someone in his stead because he's unavailable due to <reasons> - to even come out and say "we can't get to it" or "we plan to get to it on X day". It's just... silence except Sara (bless her heart) saying she'd try to get something done, three days ago. This gives (me) this weird impression that nobody fundamentally cares, which is so un-Paizo.

Disappointing, yet bear in mind the “spoiler” status of the D&D line. It’s rare to see or hear anything in regard to this line before release and it doesn’t seem to harm its sales too much. Certainly not going to affect my purchase at this time, although my wife delights in asking me whether I’m too old now for “little plastic men”. Hopefully once things settle a bit we’ll see the previews on a more regular basis - of course given that pf2 is not releasing until August (?) next year I’m not all that hopeful about the status of normal.

It’s clearly a minority view, but I prefer buying a case blind. (Weirdly perhaps, I only care about the setlist if I’m buying just a booster or a brick). Personally, I find this distinction another benefit of Wizkids producing both lines and trying different strategies with each.

My thoughts on the revealed minis:

-Fey Dragon: This tiny creature is from book #1 of Kingmaker and reprinted in Bestiary 3 as Faerie Dragon. It is a nice choice.
common or uncommon.

-Army Ant Swarm: A very useful swarm creature, which will definetly be common, as you need 4 to form a large swarm. Hopefully flat enough to put a mini on.

-Dweomercat: This medium magical beast from AP#36, which is not reprinted in any of the six Bestiaries and doesn't appear in the adventure itself is a somewhat strange choice imo. It may double as a black Panther or cat companion. Uncommon or rare.

-Giant Frog: Looking forward to the sculpt, the art in the Bestiary is nice, maybe it will even have a long tongue sticking out? ;-) Common rarity.

-Shadow Rogue: I think this will be the "Dark Stalker", the 2nd Caligni from the Bestiary, as we also get the "Dark Creeper" in the next set (Ruins of Lastwall). Common.

-Pitax Warden: These fullplate-armored fighters are heavily featured in AP#35. Common.

-Web Lurker: Probably another medium spider, as the only other one we have is from the first "Heroes & Monsters" set. Common.

-Monitor Lizard: I got a dozen or so from D&D, but this medium lizard is a basic creature we hadn't have before in PFB, definetly common.

-Trollhound: A CR 3 magical beast from AP#32, which is reprinted in Bestiary 3. Common or uncommon.

-Ankou: Appearing first in the bestiary section of AP#36 & reprinted in B4, this CR 14 fey is probably uncommon, as they are four encountered.

-Smilodon: This advanced Dire Tiger will have to be really big on the large base, differentiating it from the "Jungle of Despair" tiger. Uncommon.

-Frost Giant Jarl: Probably being based on the four-armed CR 17 "Kargstaad" from AP#36, this has to be a rare.

-Ahuizotl: This CR 6 magical beast from AP#34, reprinted in B3 is only encountered solitary, but i think it will be uncommon.

Observation: No mini for Nok-Nok the goblin rogue.

We also have four dressing pieces to look for.

thanks for the info Marco.
I wouldn’t cancel my subscription over not knowing the previews, but I‘m considering a delay of delivery over having run out of shelf-space and not knowing if I want to order any singles to top up.

The "Web Lurker" will be an Ettercap, as i forgot we already got a second medium giant spider in the "Crown of Fangs" set.

Man!

If I'd known that, I would've signed off on a whole case on that one miniature alone.

Awesome. I'm all about the tiny dragons.

You should get 3 minimum, maybe even 5 in a case, depending on the rarity (common or uncommon). ;-)

In other news:
The Kingmaker cases & incentives are listed as "in stock" on the release schedule page, so theoretically Mark could show us pictures of actual minis, but i don't think that will happen in the coming week.

Here is a prediction about three minis from the Bestiary that will be in "Ruins of Ladtwall":

-Mohrg
-Shadow
-Greater Shadow
