Diamonds in the Ruff

Happy Friday. As there may, or may not (there was) some confusion on my part as to what had already been revealed in previous posts, this week you all will get 4 unveilings. Remember to not judge by appearances, as beauty is within. On that note, lets get this week's Pathfinder Battles: Crown of Fangs show off session going!

First this week, we have the Dog, a small common miniature. This little guy looks fantastic for a common. The muscles standing out is freakin sweet. The pose could either be "waiting for you to throw the stick" or "about to maul your low level characters while they try to stand up after being knocked prone again and again and again and again and again". I may speak from personal experience. Turns out, dogs are horrifying opponents if you are short on hit points and don't have a good combat maneuver defense. This miniature could also be used as an animal companion. But lets move on.

Next, we have the Boy, a small uncommon. Don't let his baby face fool you. This miniature could be used as a halfling, the kid that delivers the message, or the prince named Joffrey that noone in the group minds finding out drank bad wine.

Then we have the Girl, another small uncommon. This young lady means business (see: knife). Highly versatile figure that could also double as a small character if one prefers.

Finally, we have the Reclamation Infantry, a medium common figure. Again, for a common, the detail on this guy is fantastic. Anyone wanting to play the grizzled old soldier should definitely pick up this miniature. Also, what GM doesn't need the drill sergeant, surly watchman, or veteran paladin npc to liven their game up?

See you next week!

I know that there will be some who don't care for pets or children, but these will fill some gaps very nicely. Three great pieces.

I'm excited about the Reclamation Infantry, especially since I know more like him are coming! I'm really liking this set.

I eat stuff like this up. All of these are minis with tremendous utility, and the first three in particular are long overdue. Well done!

hooray, more civilins

white dog means easy to re-paint, also good.

infantry... nice figure, but not entirely required I feel, plenty of guard types around already.

Commoner NPC's like this are great to have

To be fair, that guys not what I was talking about. I meant civilians :P I don't really need more of that guy either, but I'll probably keep one and sell the rest.

Brace yourself. There's a whole lot more Reclamation Troops coming. Four more sculpts, from what I've seen out on the Wizkids site. They're going to make an excellent warband, so I'm pretty excited for them. Maybe Mike will choose to spotlight them next blog?

I'd be okay with that, I love the warband thing. :)

This looks exciting for October:

From icv2

Following up on May’s Crown of Fangs release (see “‘Pathfinder Battles: Crown of Fangs’”), the Maze of Death will feature 52 miniatures of creatures, villains, and heroes from the Pathfinder world, including Ratfolk, Ghuls, Viper Vines, and Minotaurs. Some boxes will also have rare “dungeon dressing” terrain pieces.

The figures will be packed in booster boxes, each containing 1 large figure and 3 small or medium figures. MSRP is $15.99 per booster. Boosters are packaged in bricks of eight.

WizKids is also offering a case pre-order incentive for this set. The Maze of Death Case Incentive includes two oversized figures representing a Fire Elemental Lord and an Air Elemental Lord. Customers who pre-order a full case of Pathfinder Battles: Maze of Death is eligible to order one Maze of Death Case Incentive. MSRP is $49.99.

Maze of Death

Wizkids also has this on it´s release schedule page.

So we will get two huge elementals (as MD#51 and MD#52) in the case incentive, similar to the Deadly Foes incentive Clockwork Dragon and Spawn of Cthulhu.
That´s not as cool as huge minis in the actual boosters (as with Storm King´s Thunder), but still good news.
I guess the second set (#15) in 2018 could then have the other two elementals (Earth and Water).

So we´ll finally get some ratfolk (Bestiary 3), probably 3 or 4 minis based on some of the excellent art in the Advanced Race Guide.

I´m not so excited about the Ghul (B3 again), i´d rather finally have some Urdhefhan, but i guess the Ghul could be used as Cinderghouls for Crimson Throne or as other half-translucent bone and flame guys.

Viper Vine (Bestiary 2 page 279) - finally a plant monster gets the long overdue miniature treatment!
The Viper Vine looks cooler than the Assassin Vine and could maybe substitute for it.
I hope it won´t be the only plant type mini in the set, the Basidirond and Vegepygmy are much needed as are the Violet Fungus and Yellow Musk Creeper to a smaller degree.

I already have enough Minotaurs, but i guess i can stomach one more and also guess it will be based on the cover art from AP #117.

So, good news - i hope the previews for set 13 "Maze of Death" start as soon as the ones for "Crown of fangs" are finished. ;-)

Crown of fangs booster unboxing youtube video

You can see the actual set numbers for most of the 47 minis in the video.
In case you are wondering about the numbering:
There are only 44 creature minis in the blind booster, plus 6 unnumbered dressing pieces, but there are 3 additional minis with numbering under the base in the case incentive (in addition to the 2 sitting ones). ;-)

Here's hoping earth and water are the incentive for the set after. Kind of a bummer water isn't in this one since water is the only huge size there isn't one of for DDM.

I use the old D&D large wave water elementals for Large, and rebased my Paizo large water elementals to huge because they so over-fill their Large bases.

a small army in one set is pretty cool, way better than the (sight) differences in style when stuff is spread across several sets.

Four for four once more. Glad we're getting the dog and the children, just shows how much Erik and Michael listen on these forums. The reclamation soldier was a surprise but getting a set of them is very cool. Easily one of the best sets to date, the last one set a real milestone in my mind, yet if the productions minis are up to hype (which from the unboxing video they look to be) I think this could top it.

Maze of death sounds most interesting, although the elementals delight me less than others, of course I'll still be getting them! I'm sure they'll be great but I'm still firmly in the camp of covering the other monsters of huge and greater size. At this rate it will be wotc that will produce the first frogemoth or neothelid mini.

A question for Michael Kenway or Erik Mona (i miss your presence in these blogs and hope you have the time to at least read them with all your new fields of work, Erik):

If you click on the link at the top of the page saying "Pathfinder Battles Crown of Fangs", the product information says "Skeletons, Red Mantis Assassins and monstrous Giants" are in the set.

We know know there are no giants in the set (Ash Giant appears in the AP).

As the description for the last sets was accurate, this makes me think there was supposed to be an Ash Giant in the set, which was replaced somewhere along the way with the "Reclamation Cavalry" or "Reclamation" Sky Cavalry" (the only two large minis not appearing in the CotCT AP).

The inclusion of the five "reclamation" minis and the two halfling minis (all from the "Hell's Vengeance" Adventure Path) always seemed strange to me and i suppose they were planned as miniatures before the CotCT hardcover collection got so popular.

Which brings me to my question:

1.) Was there an Ash Giant sculpt made for this set (which may pop up in a future set)?

Thank you for reading my rant. ;-)

Not that I remember.

This started as a full-on Curse of the Crimson Throne set, but ultimately WizKids wanted to go with a more general theme, since the general-theme sets tend to sell a bit better than the ones tied to a specific AP. This was before the setlist was complete, mind you, so it didn't really impact the CotCT stuff I wanted to do, it just helped to fill out the setlist.

Since Hell's Rebels was going to press about the time we made this list, I was seeing a lot of cool images of knights and warriors and stuff, and I thought they'd fit in with an overall sort of "royalty" theme that the set has even outside of the Crimson Throne elements.

So that's the origin of that. I don't believe there was ever an ash giant in this set. I can't really explain that mix-up. I suspect it's just a mistake.

These are great. The boy would have been useful recently. One of characters in my Curse of the Crimson Throne game was eaten by Gobblegut. He decided to play one of Lamm's lambs as a rogue, we were stuck using a gnome as his mini. Sadly, the poor bastard just died to the derro in the ossuary.

I really love the reclamation infantry figure.

Thank you for answering, Erik.

I think this set will do well, as there are a lot of "army building" minis in it:

3 VERMIN:
-small common spider
-medium common spider
-large uncommon scorpion

9 UNDEAD:
-3 different medium common skeletons
-common Geist
-uncommon Banshee
-uncommon Skeleton Champion
-large uncommon Death/Reaper
-large uncommon Owlbear Skeleton
-large rare Skeleton Cavalry

6 TOWNSFOLK
-small common dog
-small uncommon boy
-small uncommon girl
-common thugs
-rare King
-rare Queen

4 CITY GUARD
-common Guard
-uncommon Archer
-uncommon Captain
-large rare Dragon Rider

3 ASSASSINS
-2 uncommon & 1 rare Red Mantis

5 SOLDIERS
-male & female common infantry
-uncommon knight
-large rare cavalry
-large rare sky cavalry

And of course the great "CITY" dressing pieces. ;-)
