Here Come the Hobgoblins

Friday, July 8, 2016

One of my favorite moments in the development of any Pathfinder Battles set is the day when WizKids brings in the paint master and I get to see the figures for what amounts to the first time. Sure, I've carefully selected the reference images and approved digital sculpts, but it's not until you can actually hold the figures in your hand that they truly become "real." And oh, boy did we have a "real" experience looking at Deadly Foes!

Incidentally, the set has officially moved to a NOVEMBER release. I am told by reliable sources that it is unlikely to slip further.

The theme of Deadly Foes is high-utility monsters, humanoids, and heroes, and the feeling in the room as each of the painted figures was that this may be one of our best and most useful sets yet.

This week I'd like to show off three figures from the set: Hobgoblins all!

Up first is the Hobgoblin Archer, a nice rank-and-file ranged weapon attacker. Simple. Effective. Deadly. The Hobgoblin Archer is a Medium, common figure.

This guy is the bomb. The Hobgoblin Alchemist is a Medium, common figure.

Last up this week is the Hobgoblin Cleric, another Medium, common figure.

All three hobgoblins were inspired by art from the Pathfinder RPG Monster Codex, which also has relevant game statistics.

Lots more to show off in the coming weeks!

Until then, I remain...

The Guards from PaizoCon had the normal set information on the bottom as well, despite having some deviations from the regular paint job.

Cool.
We also reached a second page, which is cool too.

I hope we get a cool preview (not as late as last week) tonight. ;-)

What was given out at PaizoCon for miniatures? Was it just the Guard, or was the Kobold Devilspeaker also given out? Any others?

Silver Crusade Contributor

It was just a Guard. (Plus a pack of Dungeons Deep, though, which was nice.)

Not that paint job, either... they just switched the red and black. I had to compare it to one of my other ones to tell the difference...

Dark Archive

No preview. :-(

So it seems we only get one every two weeks now...

Not the least factor, remember that the release date was pushed back to four months from now. Sixteen weeks of previews isn't going to happen.

Patience is a virtue, Marco.

"Patience, yeah, yeah, how long's that going to take to learn?"

Ed Gruberman!? I didn't know you had an account here!

Child, you fail to grasp Tai Qwon Leap. Approach the master that you may learn.

But seriously, I wasn't expecting anyone to get the reference, but oddly hopeful. You just made my day.

Sounds more like something that Homer Simpson would say. ;-)

17 computer renders of minis left to reveal and 15 weeks till the Wizkids release date of november 2nd seems like no problem at all to me.

I´d rather get one mini reveal than none.

And that doesn´t even take pictures of prototypes or actual production miniatures into account, nor other miniature product news like boxed sets or mini-mate goblins or the unpainted minis line set for a fall release date.

If i would be patient, i wouldn´t need this weekly minis blog at all, a list would suffice.

Also i like to know how the minis look, before ordering a case (even if i would do it with just a list nowadays, because i know how good they have become) and i enjoy Erik´s texts and what the others have to say to the minis.

Besides that, i´m waiting from 01:00 in the night till 5:00 in the morning here in germany for a preview, so i think it is understandable if i am sad when none is coming.

I would really like to see photos of the paint masters/production minis. While the renders usually do a good job matching the actual minis, its still nice to see what we are actually going to get.

Any chance of doing more with the unpainted metal line with Reaper? These are nice and all but I'm a painter and I'm not as fond of blind random packs. All that ever seems to get added to Reaper's line are the iconics and one or two npc's from the adventure paths. The black dragon mini has been in limbo for ages. What's up?

Reaper has more stuff in the pipeline! I approved eight figures at the GAMA Trade Show a few weeks back, and they look fantastic.

I think the transition to focusing on Bones and the fulfillment of all those Kickstarters knocked back a lot of Reaper's new minis plans, but they are moving forward and I expect new product to start flowing soon.

Ok I saw what's coming with Reaper, and now I'm disappointed again. It's just the missing Iconics. Not that the Iconics aren't nice looking, because they are, it's just that they are the least useful minis. Also Honaire will be nice to get. At least there will be a troll in Bones 3, but I'd really like to see some more Pathfinder monsters make it to metal.

Erik, i read you are writing the entire "Pathfinder: Worldscape" comics miniseries.

Do you have the license to make minis out of the crossover characters?

Probably not, but i think i'd ask anyway.

Thx.

It is wrong to tip the vessel of knowledge, my student

Many apologies, Master, but I feel Ed Gruberman is not fully wrong.

What do you mean?

I want to boot some head, too.

Have you learned nothing from the lesson of Ed Gruberman?

Yes, Master, I have learned two things.

First, Anger is a weapon only to one's opponent.

Very good.

And secondly, get in the first shot. 'Boot to the head'

You missed.

Uh, yeah. Well...

You too shall be honored to learn a lesson...

You don't have to, you know. I-I gotta be going...

'Boot to the head!'

Oyyy oy oyyyy.... Oh....

I'm wondering if there will be boon support to make hobgoblin PCs in PFS, since we're getting awesome minis for them...

Some great ideas here, folks!

I know you are very busy right now with writing Pathfinder Worldscape and the Product Catalogue, but can we please get a preview this weekend?

Thx, Erik.

I can fully understand slowing it down, after all if the previews finish too far before the sets release it takes some of the shine off. I agree with others it can easily be stretched out with pics of production minis - in fact I'd rather they were here than find them on eBay or other sites where they're so closely shot it detracts from the quality. I'd love more stories behind why minis are chosen or their design as well but this is a lot of work for Erik.

At the moment though I'd wouldn't object to a heads up with what's happening with the editors Friday blog, I actually (and sadly?) really look forward to my Friday/Saturday fix of minis and collectable goodness.

Although we unfortunately have no official Paizo preview this week, I have added another promo miniature image to the Pathfinder Battles gallery, courtesy of Kalindlara.

I lately see lots of people getting angry/frustrated with Wizkids for not previewing the latest D&D minis in time for preordering them (me among them).

Luckily that is not the case with Pathfinder Battles.

Even though we haven't seen new reveals for 2,5 weeks, Erik has already shown us 32 (61,5%) of 52 minis in the Deadly Foes set and we still have 5 weeks before the Diamond Previews release to see some more.

Personally i know i'll order a case of Deadly Foes because the quality is superb and i have seen enough minis i want.

SKT has 10 minis revealed and we don't even know if the giants are large or huge.

So, i'd like to thank Erik Mona for a (mostly) regular series of previews which make it possible to order a case of minis without remorse. :-)

Whilst I personally prefer the surprise, it's undeniable that most don't. Typically, Paizo are right across giving gamers what they want.

In this case probbably, I still regret my LoG case choice, should have gone for RotR instead and picked cherries with LoG.

That´s ok! :-)

I´m sure we will get a cool preview on friday 29th and/or lots of cool reveals from GenCon!

Again, we have been shown nearly two thirds of the minis well before the pre-order date, that´s enough for me.

I´m also sure that Erik will have shown most of the unrevealed minis in the next 5 weeks, for people that order via Diamond Previews.

How come another push back on the minis? So we got none for Gen-Con. October we will not have them and now sometime in November. I have to ask this question. When will the next Set be released??? Will it be 3 or 6 months after Deadly foes hits the streets OR will it be 3 or 6 months after the previously announced August/October release date??

I love the minis, but every time I budget to pick up a case with friends it pushes back. We are now in X-Mas shopping territory and people are going to be buying for family. I know my gaming group is and that's outside of the PFS groups. Its going from a few cases to perhaps just two bricks :(
