Given the amount of travel I do as Organized Play Coordinator, you would think I've gotten better at packing. I'm currently surrounded by my suitcase, Class Decks for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, and a pile of Paizo shirts, considering how best to get everything into my bag. No matter how many times I do this, I still fret that I haven't remembered everything I needed to pack. But, somehow, it all gets into the bag and I'm off to the airport! I off to Origins tomorrow and am looking forward to seeing more Pathfinders. If you're at the show, please stop by and say hi! Better yet, come see the new Mummy's Mask demo for the Adventure Card Game. This Base Set has a few tricks up its sleeve that are really cool!

This blog is another conglomeration of topics. None of them need enough space for their own blog, but each of them involves news that I want to share it with you. So if you want to know more about Free RPG Day, Gen Con events, Faction Pin bonuses, Regional Venture-Coordinators, and campaign flavor, read on. Otherwise, have a great week gaming and I'll see you next Monday!

Free RPG Day

This Saturday, June 18 is Free RPG Day! On the roleplaying side of things, the team got together and sanctioned We B4 Goblins, this year's module written by the fantastic Crystal Frasier, for use in Pathfinder Society organized play. For Adventure Card Game, we see the debut of of Tup the Terrible, goblin pyromancer extraordinaire.

Sanctioning documents and pregenerated characters have been added to the product page for We B4 Goblins. This year, in addition to the regular chronicle, we've included a boon for those playing the module in a retail location on Free RPG Day, which grants your character a commerative toad for use in future scenarios.

Gen Con Events

Considering going to Gen Con but haven't gotten your tickets? Already going, but not sure what to participate in? Check out the two newest pregenerated character specials!

On Thursday night at 8:00 PM, once again don the guise of Aspis Agents at Gen Con event RPG1697556—PFS Special #7-98: Serpents' Ire (Level 8). Someone skimmed profits from the Aspis Consortium to fund daring experiments & the Aspis have called upon an elite team of agents—both new talent & familiar veterans—to shut it down. Eighth level pregenerated characters are provided for this event. This scenario is part of Season 7's metaplot and follows activities of last year's scenarios #6-97: Siege of Serpents and #6-98: Serpents' Rise.

Saturday evening at 8 sees the launch of Season 8 with Gen Con event RPG1697558—PFS Special #7-99: Through Maelstrom Rift (Level 5). Travel the elemental planes as a disturbance on the Plane of Air portends disaster. As a team of elemental guardians, the PCs must brave otherworldly threats to uncover the cause & preserve the balance of the planes. For this event, fifth level pregenerated characters are provided. This scenario launches the Season 8 metaplot.

In prior years, we offered Kid's Track events for our younger gamers. They are still on the schedule, but listed as part of the broader Pathfinder Society Academy (PSA) offerings. This year, PSA activities run in the first two slots Thursday through Saturday and the only slot on Sunday. We have Kid's Track Beginner, Advanced, and Transitions lessons as well as family-friendly tables of our evergreen adventures #5-08: The Confirmation, #6-10: The Wounded Wisp, and #7-10: The Consortium Compact.

Besides the two special events and PSA, tickets are still available for a variety of PFS scenarios throughout the event. Visit the the Gen Con website and look for events hosted by Paizo. You will also find listed Adventure Card Guild scenarios and seminars on a variety of subjects. Come on out and join us, everyone is welcome!

Faction Pin Benefits

At PaizoCon, we debuted new Pathfinder Society faction pins. We also announced that while the pins wouldn't allow a reroll, like other items, they would grant another in-game benefit to players. The team put its head together and developed a really cool faction flavored program for the pins.

Once per session, while wearing a faction pin matching your character's faction, you may add 1 to any skill check. If you apply this benefit to one of your faction's favored skills, listed below, you instead roll 1d4 and add the result. For this roll you also treat the faction's favored skill as if you were trained, even if you don't have a rank in it.

Favored Skills

  • Dark Archive: Knowledge (arcana), Linguistics, and Use Magic Device
  • The Exchange: Appraise, Intimidate, and Knowledge (local)
  • Grand Lodge: Diplomacy, Knowledge (history), and Survival
  • Liberty's Edge: Escape Artist, Perform, and Disable Device
  • Scarab Sages: Knowledge (any)
  • Silver Crusade: Heal, Knowledge (religion), and Sense Motive
  • Sovereign Court:Bluff, Disguise, and Knowledge (nobility)

Regional Venture-Coordinators

When I added the Regional Venture-Coordinators to the Venture-Officer team, the territorial divisions were based mostly on the number of existing Venture-Officers. This led to some regions being very small with a high number of volunteers and some regions spanning states, countries, and even continents. At our recent PaizoCon meeting, we discussed rearranging some boundaries and bringing on a new Regional-Coordinator. Below are the redrawn regional boundaries:

Northwest—Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, British Columbia, Alberta

Southwest—California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, all of Mexico, all of Central America and all of South America

Southeast—North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida

Midwest—North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Saskatchewan, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and Manitoba

South—Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas

Great Lakes—Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Ontario

Northeast—Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Quebec & the Atlantic Regions of Canada

Mid-Atlantic—reassigned to Northeast and Southeast

Asia-Pacific—Hawaii, India, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Okinawa, China and Eastern Asia

AAE (Africa-East Eurasia)—Iceland, Netherlands, Denmark, Scandinavia, Latvia, Russia, & South Africa

WEME (West Eurasia-Middle East)—Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland, UK, Italy, Croatia, Ukraine, Israel, Turkey, & UAE

Central Europe—Germany, Austria, Switzerland

Over the past few months, we also said goodbye to two coordinators, as they stepped back from their role. Please take a moment to thank Art Lobdell and Jason Roeder for their service to the team. Both are returning to the ranks of Venture-Captain, Art to New Jersey and Jason to Missouri. I appreciate all they have done for Pathfinder Society as RVCs and am very pleased they are staying on as Venture-Captains and lending their experience to help keep our Society moving forward.

This left several vacancies on the RVC team. It is my pleasure to introduce the newest Regional-Coordinators, as well as one who is moving from his position leading the Mid-Atlantic region to the newly created Central Europe region.

South—Jon Cary
Northwest—Walter Sheppard
Central Europe—Dan Simons

Campaign Flavor

The past couple weeks have seen heated discussions on our forums between Pathfinders concerning the direction of the Pathfinder Society. Unfortunately, these escalated and hurtful and inappropriate comments were exchanged. If you have strong feelings about what should or should not be included in the campaign, we need you (and all community members) to approach discussions in a calm and measured manner. You may also provide feedback to pathfindersociety@paizo.com.

Until next week's blog—safe travels to those heading out and about this convention season. Explore, Report, Cooperate!

Chris, you are awesome as always, thank you!!

Congratulations to the new RVCs, especially Walter Sheppard. Going to be great to have my RVC close now. Thank you Todd Morgan for all you have done as the previous Northwest RVC!

Thank you Art and Jason for what you have done for your respective regions as RVCs!!

I feel the need be That One Finn who crawls out of the woodwork to make the pedantic comment that Finland is not a part of Scandinavia. It is a part of the Nordic countries and the larger area known as Fennoscandia, but not a part of Scandinavia proper either culturally or geographically. Therefore, PFS in Finland does not fall under any listed category.

Also, when the Regional Coordinators page was last edited, the Danish region of Odense and the UK region of Ringstead were moved into the Finland section for some reason.

Walter stands in his domicile, pondering a doorway.

Arms akimbo, his overly large head turns back and forth.

"Maybe if I just get rid of every doorway I won't have problems walking through them."

Congrats on the move up the food chain, Walter! Well done!

Forgive me, but I have been out of the PFS scene for a while, and I ask this only out of curiosity, not to start any discussion; what direction is PFS going that has people upset?

Edit: I also think the pins and their benefit are kinda cool.

I recommend you look for any thread where the last post is from either Liz or Chris. That should start you on the path to enlightenment, Grasshopper.

For faction pins, when do you have to chose to apply the bonus?

Before you roll?
Before result is announced?
After result is announced? (Probably too powerful)

Woot.

now to speed up operation put a metal plate in my head.

Do you decide to burn the pin before or after you roll?

The pin is used before the roll.

Oh yes please. The import costs really prohibit ordering these from Europe. If we get a bunch of them at PaizoCon UK, we can send people over with shopping lists ;)

Actually, it's not that bad, I added a couple sets to my current order and out of curiosity checked what it would cost to send them excluding my subscription.. under 10 $ IIRC.

Of course, I fully expect to be ordering dozens of them and giving them to local players at cost (credit cards are still quite rare here, and if you want store credit you can usually find one who gets it for you).

I'm definitely hoping we might get some in con support. It would be super super cool to be able to hand new players who decide PFS is their kind of game a pin.

I made a list of what it would cost for the pins only.

It's not the shipping that breaks the camel's back, it's the added taxes and stuff :)
While I don't know the German laws, for the Netherlands it's most cost effective to order them in sets of 4 pins at a time.

Pins to the Netherlands cost calculation:
Exchangerate of 1 euro per 0,90 dollar gives the following:
1 pin: 4,49 + shipping 2,74 = 7,23
2 pin: 8,98 + shipping 2,74 = 11,72
3 pin: 13,47 + shipping 2,74 = 16,21
4 pin: 17,96 + shipping 3.15 = 21,11
5 pin: 22,48 + shipping 3,15 + tax 5,38 + administrative costs 13,00 = 44,01
6 pin: 26,94 + shipping 3,15 + tax 6.32 + administrative costs 13,00 = 49,41
7 pin: 31,42 + shipping 3,15 + tax 7,26 + administrative costs 13,00 = 54,83
8 pin: 35,91 + shipping 3,55 + tax 8,29 + administrative costs 13,00 = 60,75 (42,22 if ordering per 4)
12 pin: 53,87 + shipping 4,57 + tax 12,27 + administrative costs 13,00 = 83,71 (63,33 if ordering per 4)
16 pin: 71,83 + shipping 4,98 + tax 16,13 + administrative costs 13,00 = 105,94 (84,44 if ordering per 4)
32 pin: 143,66 + shipping 8,31 + importcost: 6,08 + tax 33,19 + administrative costs 13,00 = 204,24 (168,88 if ordering per 4)

Orders with a combined cost of value + shipping of 22 or less have no tax or importcosts.
Orders with a combined costs of value of goods + shipping between 22 and 150 will get 21% tax over that amount.
Orders with a combined cost of value + shipping above 150 will get import costs added to it (for jewelry that's 0-4% based on an unknown rating for me, so I went with 4%) and 21% tax over the combined amount of import costs and the value of goods and shipping.
And the Dutch postal service will do the declaration for you, which they do for 13 euro added to the total.

Congratulations to all the new RVCs!!! And to those who stepped down, thank you for all you have done, and continue to do for PFS!

While I appreciate the idea of having Paizo exclusive stuff, as a local PFS coordinator I would deeply love it if I could buy these things and also hand them out to my players, and support my FLGS at the same time.

People don't cart around hard-copy books like they used to. When your PFS character uses 15 different books, it only makes sense to get the PDF rather than the hard cover. My FLGS is carrying less and less Pathfinder hard copy, not because they don't want to be a part of Paizo's community, but because they don't sell, even to our PFS players, when PFS players can buy the digital copies for far less money and not be stuck with a bulky physical copy.

I'm not saying Paizo needs to change its policy on those, because that's a complicated and knotty subject. But when you've created a new product that literally has to be a physical item and doesn't have a PDF version, I know that my FLGS will tend to not feel very good about that when that's... a paizo.com exclusive. Here's a physical piece of merchandise that COULD be sold in store as a goody to PFS players, and... it's not an option. :(

As a PFS coordinator and VL, I frequently feel like I'm being torn in two directions between my love for Paizo and PFS, and my desire to support and patronize my local store-- which is where I first got into PFS in the first place. Like most brick and mortar stores, they're not rolling in the dough; the bulk of their income comes from Magic players. By hosting weekly tables of PFS, they're giving us table space that could be given to Magic players instead-- and would make them far more money. They choose to keep allowing us to play PFS, out of love for the game and for roleplayers... but it is going to be increasingly hard to justify that for them on an economic level, when PFS purchases can be made, more, and more, and more, without ever requiring a dime to be spent in the local store. At some point, the only way the stores will make any money off PFS players-- and they need to make money, they're a business-- will be on snacks and charging admission. And they can already make that, and far more, off the Magic players.

I'm not saying a single thing like a pin is going to make the difference, and I'm sure Paizo's run the numbers on shipping and have reasons for their decision to keep the pins exclusive to Paizo.

But for the stores that are already wrestling with the fact that PFS players may not spend a lot locally, having a new physical product like this that is literally not available to them... doesn't and won't feel very good. :|

Totally agree on making the pins available for FLGS sales. We need to support our local stores.

One other question about the roll bonus from using a pin: Do you have to actually be wearing the pin on our shirt or clothes? Can I just attach all 7 of them to my backpack that I bring every game instead? OK, I probably won't buy all 7, but at least 2 or 3 for the factions where I have the most PC's.

Like T-shirts, they need to be worn. So grab it off your backpack and put it on for the game!

Since there were no pins for the one true lodge, i went and made one Shown with the pins of lesser factions for scale.

I sewed a small magnet onto my hat , baked a magnet into the pin, and for the other ones cut off the pin and glued a magnet on it, so i can hot swap out the pins onto my hat like benny from the mummy. As an added bonus the pins all stick together in a clump (but my silver crusade pin is apparently off crusading somewhere...)
