Uncover the Truth: Occult Adventures Playtest!

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

The world is full of mysteries. Truths hidden in plain sight, obscured to further secret goals and nefarious agendas. Some dare to uncover these secrets, venturing into the shadow to learn about these strange forces, and now you can be one of them.

Welcome to the playtest of Occult Adventures, a book filled with mysteries and secrets due out in summer 2015. This hardcover Pathfinder RPG rulebook will contain a mountain of new material for your game, from mysterious orders to strange powers, not to mention new archetypes, feats, spells, and magic items. As with our previous playtests, we want to make sure this book is the best it can be, and that's where you come in. Occult Adventures includes 6 new base classes to add to your game, each one focusing on one aspect of psychic magic. Similar in some ways to arcane and divine magic, psychic magic ventures into new territory, utilizing the power of the mind, body, and soul. Each of the classes in this playtest uses psychic magic in different ways, from the raw power of the kineticist to the subtle manipulations of the mesmerist.

You can download the Occult Adventures Playtest document now! The PDF contains a brief discussion on the nature of the occult in Pathfinder, all 6 of the new classes, and a selection of psychic spells. Give these classes a read, build a character, and most importantly, use them in your games. Once you've had a chance to give them a try, go to our messageboards and post up your thoughts and feedback. We are eager to hear what you think works with these new rules and what still needs work. This playtest will remain open until November 25th (although we will keep it open for an additional round of playtesting if feedback warrants any significant revisions).

In addition, starting next week, there will be a survey for each one of the classes, allowing us to gain some basic insight on your opinions about these classes. These will be available on Tuesday, November 4th, and remain open until the end of the playtest. Please share your input before then!

You can even play these classes in Pathfinder Society. For this playtest, we have added a special boon for those who make a character and play them during the playtest. We're excited to see how these classes work in PFS!

Finally, I want to take a moment to talk about the playtest process itself. Although we find all feedback useful, thoughts and comments based on actual play experience is by far the most valuable. Please try to fit these classes into your game, or even just run a few mock encounters. When posting to the playtest forums, look for existing threads on your topic before starting a new one—this will help us to better absorb and respond to feedback. While discussions can become heated, remember that every game is different and every poster is trying to make the game better for everyone. Be polite and respectful of the ideas others' posts.

Well, that about wraps it up for now. Grab the PDF and uncover the occult secrets that lie within. We will be waiting for you on the boards, looking for your feedback and ideas. Thank you for participating and helping us playtest Occult Adventures.

Ah. Not a fan of animated stuff, or martial arts, for that matter, so I don't really know anything about that. Thanks.

So 20 scenarios in less than a month for the full boon, wish I could.

I wish I could even play one. :)

You're not the first to wonder about that, actually. It's possible with only 9 scenarios through the use of GM credit, as I cover in another thread. I imagine most players will only hit the first two boons, yet when Mark and I were cooking up various renditions of this Chronicle sheet, we also wanted to ensure that someone who wants to be a playtesting rockstar got something cool for her efforts.

I can't see the link to download the playtest PDF?

The links in the blog post go to either the Occult Adventures product page, the Occult Playtest messageboards (4 links), or the chronicle sheet, or PFS.

Edit: Got it, thanks TriOmegaZero. Looked at all the links and missed the Add to Downloads button on the right.

Yeah, it looks like a 1/day snuck in there somehow. Disregard that. You gain one 1st-level spell and no 2nd-level spells.

1) 63 pages

2) It'll work alongside.

@John Compton -- With the number of PFS games (1 every 2 weeks), and no home games, where I am, I think the majority of us here will be lucky to get the first boon.

The play test document is not appearing in my downloads.

Edit: it wasn't where I expected it to be.

Awesome. I'm already drawing potential connections between psychic magic and the First World, Dimension of Dreams, and Astral Planes. The former two, especially, seem like they're just begging to be connected.

Very cool!!! Looking forward to this one!

Initial thoughts:
Kineticist - As someone else mentioned it reminds me of the Warlock but a lot more flavorful. I like it!

Medium - I can see this as becoming the single most complicated class in Pathfinder (which isn't a bad thing I can just see how complex it can be). I like it!

Mesmerist - It really has the feel of Woody Harrelson's character from Now You See Me. I like it!

Occultist - Uses magic items to cast spells...cool. I like it!

Psychic - Full caster yet is distinct from other casters. I like it!

Spiritualist - A Summoner-like class with a non-malleable companion. I like it!

Psychic Spells - I like the idea that they don't require verbal or somatic components but I'm a little fuzzy on how the Emotional Components work. I also like that fact that its not a completely different system for the sake of being a different system. I like it.

My laptop would have to die today wouldnt it. Liking what I've seen so far in my limited phone reading.

Spiritualist has the weirdest proficiencies ever though. All light weapons (so, simple martial and exotic) and then specifically kukri sap and scythe. Why those three weapons? And why all light weapons?

Initial thoughts....Flavor and feel is A+
Medium and Spiritualist are both concepts I have tried time and time again with existing classes, but never managed something that worked for me..
The other classes likewise are actually all interesting, and inspire all sorts of concepts as I'm reading....

The Medium makes up for my disappointment in the Shaman ;)

Now to go ruminate on the mechanics...

Okay, already got a question for the kineticist's kinetic fist. It surrounds you with your element of choice, and lets you do element damage with an unarmed strike or natural attack, BUT it doesn't specify if it lets you make unarmed strikes without AoO if you don't have the feat.

I'm getting a formatting error when I unzip it (aka the PDF is not working or is corrupt)? Is that because I'm using Winrar or Foxit Reader? Is this happening to anyone else?

Very nice, looking forward to working on this over the weekend.

I'd really like to run a 19th century gaslight campaign with these classes, along with the Investigator, Brawler, and Swashbuckler.

Try re-downloading it. I use Winrar and my copy works fine.

Okay, I disinstalled Foxit Reader and installed Adobe Acrobat for Windows 7 and it still doesn't recognize the file type. It says either the file type is unsupported or the file is corrupt? Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here people?

I'm happy to see new classes that start from a distinct concept and aren't meant to be hybrids of other classes. It took me a while to warm to the Advanced Class Guide, and I will probably use a number of those classes, but these new classes feel like they're entering new territory again.

Did you re-download it? My zipped file is 10.2 MB. What's yours? If it's smaller, delete it, clear your cookies, and download it again.

Will the final publication include GM resources for flavoring a psychic magic-laden campaign? A lot of this stuff seems more appropriate to a campaign designed around it rather than an anything-goes world.

For that matter, will there be anything regarding how this fits into Golarion? Will we find out about some lost psychic island? (I can't remember if Distant Worlds had some references to alien races with psychic abilities, but it sounds familiar....)

1) Yes. There's a whole section on incorporating occult themes into your campaigns and using the material in this book in your games.

2) There will not be a lot of discussion of Golarion in this book, as it's in the core rulebook line where we tend to keep campaign setting in the background. Sweet. Two trotters up.

Enjoying what I am reading immensely.

I really don't like the "use hit points to power abilities" kind of limiting factor, so that aspect of the Kinetecist is not to my tastes... but the class is so cool.

And we always do Gestalt - Monk/Kinetecist for the win of a bender right there.

Can't wait for things like feats, archetypes and such in the full book. Still digesting what is here.

I love the classic attack and defense modes as spells - including being stronger against certain other wise. That made me smile so wide my wife looked over and asked "What ARE you reading?"

Edit - I missed Specialization on the Kinetecist. That makes my only concern vanish. Woohoo!

I know it's a bit nitpicky, but the attack bonus for the Psychic only has +10, not +10/+5. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but it is an error. Besides that everything looks really fun to play.

Dark Archive

Initially, I'm liking the discipline of pain for the psychic.

At first I wasn't impressed by the Occultist, but reading it more thoroughly I sort of love it. It's a much more interesting and authentic "wizard" than the actual Wizard, and reading through some of the abilities and implement focuses made me picture this class as the go to source for someone actually wanting to build Harry Dresden.

So, I've only done one reading over but from what I've absorbed I can say that I love this.

I'm feeling like my favorites are the Occultist and Kineticist.

For me the Pathfinder Society sheet downloaded, but it was saying 'either the file type is unsupported or the file is corrupt' for the actual book.

How does one fix that, or is there another download source I could use?

Played as a Kineticist tonight and have to say i love it so far, I'm just afraid that it will get nerfed really bad, but i will enjoy it til it lasts and forever until retired. My friend played a psychic and it seemed coolish but kind of super squishy, he was able to do alot though so, it panned out. My only qualm is simple weapons only and the 2 skills + Intelligence, buuuuuut it does counteract the at will kinetic blast thing soooooo it's fine, I just want like 4 skills + int or something, only because it would kind of make sense.

I'll be playing my pyrokineticist tomorrow night, and from what I can tell just from the look of the abilities, water and air are better to play. They've got more universal abilities, and their choices are hard to say no to. Fire and earth seem more limited, and you almost want the universal choices more. It's like they class specifically to hone to the fans of Aang and Korra of the Avatar series. I hope this doesn't get nerfed, just corrected on the abilities that aren't written correctly. Other than that, the at-will abilities should stay. In my opinion, they're a lot like that of the 3.5 warlock. They're not overly powerful, and at higher levels will be very limited against certain foes with their proper resistances. I'm not keen on the skill points either, but I can understand why they are what they are. However, I would like at least one martial weapon. That would be so nice. Maybe we'll see that in the archetypes.

I used the earth kineticist, and i found the play pretty awesome, and i really enjoyed the flesh of stone talent, it may be weak now but it's pretty helpful. I threw him together pretty quickly and didn't check out the other types too well, but i shall. I never played 3.5 i started with pathfinder earlier this year so i'll take your word for it on the whole warlock thing.

The warlock is the one class that everyone's been begging since Pathfinder first came out, to convert. A couple of 3PP have tried, but haven't done it justice. At least that's what everyone's been saying. Personally, I was okay with the Tome of Secrets version. That being said, the 3.5 version had a 1d6/2HD eldritch blast spell-like ability that hit touch AC, and it was at-will. It was 3/4 BAB and d8 HD. The only main difference was it gained more spell-likes and could craft magic items as a wizard. It could even change its eldritch blast to other elements to get past SR. This, can't. If anything, the warlock's still the better class, but this is a close second. It's definitely on the right path.

You won't have to wait on the Dimension of Dreams and Astral Planes. I'm thrilled to say that I am writing little bits on BOTH of those places in this book. I'm honestly so excited (and humbled) to be writing these bits that they are the last part I will finish in my turnover, as I need to make sure everything else is perfect before I finalize them!

Well, at 7th level you can dual type, and what not, also as you level up you gain empower(metamagic) and i believe maximize(metamagic) before you retire the character, so that's pretty cool.

Does the Kineticist get more blasts as his BAB increases?
Aka, when his BAB is +6 +1, does this means he can use his blast twice as a Full-Round attack?

I don't believe so.

Nope, it's a spell-like ability to activate a single blast.

So, I have a question about playtesting in the PFS. I realize that this would not qualify for the boon, but are the classes legal for existing characters? I have a bloodrager about to level up, and his con score would make for a sweet, sweet kineticist.
