Year of the Sky Key Begins!

Monday, July 28, 2014

The expedition to Jormurdun has nearly concluded, and with it ends the Year of the Demon. However, the Pathfinder Society is on the cusp of making an exceptional find, catapulting us into the The Year of the Sky Key. With the season change, many factions are also finalizing their changes from extensions of national interests to independent entities with updated goals. A brief overview of each faction’s goals for Season 6 is included below, along with a link to the full text of each faction head’s letter on the messageboards.

Dark Archive: Establish the Dark Archive’s reputation with the Grand Lodge, and seek out skilled mentors to train the faction’s curators.
The Exchange: Develop trade routes and contacts in western Garund.
Grand Lodge: Follow up on recent developments in the Mwangi Expanse.
Liberty's Edge: Fight corruption and tyranny wherever it appears.
Scarab Sages: Explore the Jeweled Sages’ sanctum and seek lost relics of the order.
Silver Crusade: Serve as soldiers of peace by redeeming criminals, delivering aid to the afflicted, and handling the aftermath of the Mendevian crusade.
Sovereign Court: Build alliances with nobles across the Inner Sea region.

Thanks for your participation (and feedback) in the Year of the Demon. Pathfinder Society Organized Play continues to grow and thrive, and this year will be the best yet. As always, Explore, Report, and Cooperate!

Awesome stuff as always.

Shadow Lodge 3/5

It's weird to see an odd number of factions and most of them seemingly new, mixed in with a couple of the old!

Oh, and the results of the vote are hardly surprising.

So with all the Faction changes, will there be free faction resets?

I'd hardly wish to spoil anything for those who haven't experienced the changes themselves. ;)

Sovereign Court 4/5

How will Faction vanities/prestige purchases work? Will we still use the previous options from the Field Guide for the time being (using Andoran for Libertys Edge for example)?

One scenario had a vote for the faction head of the Scarab Sages.

Damn and I didn't get to play that with either of my Osirion characters!!!

I don't see any new symbols for these new factions... Is there new art yet to be released?

So, what happens when a PC completes a scenario with a faction-specific boon for a faction that no longer exists? Does being a member of the corresponding new faction count? Is the boon unattainable?

I would love to see a nature-based faction. Something a bit catered to druids, certain barbarians, foresty rangers, and tree-huggers in general. They could be the faction that petitions warring and destruction in favor of life and growth, but without the world police or evangelical soup kitchen flavors it seems Liberty's Edge and Silver Crusade seem to be leaning toward.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

I'd like to see a Faction devoted to unlocking mysteries, lore, and myth from the purely Divine Magic side of things. Like I said in the other thread about a Nature based faction, I just think it's too broad and, well, not really needed to be a full Faction, and the concept can easily fit into nearly any existing or coming Faction.

It also seems like a potential excuse for some players to mess with others 'cause it's what their character would do. "No you can't cast a fireball here, you might burn the forest." kind of in the same vein as the old necro vs paladin/cleric arguments, when people take it to the extreme.

My guess is August 14th, as the first day of GenCon and the start of the new season. But I haven't been able to find any statement from Mike or John stating as much. I'm curious to see the new guide and what's in it.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

I want to say that last season they released it a week or so early for people to prep, but I cant recall.

So, right now there's a sticky that contains all the Season 5 Faction Letters and the corresponding mid-season updates.

Should that be kept stickied? Or will GMs not need to reference them when running Season 5 scenarios?

Should I add on these Season 6 Faction Letters to the same thread to keep it relevant? Or, with this blog, is that no longer needed?

I am so glad I have some characters already prepped to start their adventures in season six with these mostly revamped factions. Nars, my guardian of magic, is more than ready to work with the Jeweled Sages after his brief period of wielding their power. My Kung-Fu cook is ready to bake cookies for the Dark Archive; a Swashbuckling elf is ready to help the Sovereign Court build a power base; and Captain Eagle is more than ready to smash corruption with his hammers of justice for the Liberty's Edge. Yeah, I went a little overboard there.

Still thinking about what I might want to play for the Exchange, though. Either an investigator who normally ends up looking into various scandals as a private eye, or a mercenary slayer who does the adventuring thing to look for good business.

Will a new PFS guide be coming out that describes the new factions? I don't see anything like that in free resources or related products with an Aug release date.

I'm still before level 2, and very interested to read more into a faction before I 'lock in' with my character.

When exactly does the change take place? At the start of GenCon? Or right after "The Paths We Choose"?

The same could be said about divine magic factions...

How do these faction changes affect season 5 scenarios for specific factions? As in, are those faction specific things obtainable anymore in those scenarios once season 6 starts? (Such as: If there's a boon for a Taldor faction character, can it still be obtained?)

Several of the shadow lodge players in my local area have talked about doing this (restarting the shadow lodge, but with the focus that it was supposed to be on) as well. Two of them have bars called the shadowlodge (I think they're adjorning or built into each other now).

Definitely a question I would like answered. :D

I'd Imagine if your faction was subsumed you're out of luck, but if its just had a name and or leadership change you're good.

It doesn't really make sense for the Scarab Sages to be able to join the Risen Guard anymore since we've been exiled.

I'm assuming all of these types of questions will be addressed in the new Guide to Organized Play, which should be available shortly before GenCon.

It's a Prestige award in the PFS Field Guide. Which as of season six has exactly two factions that have not changed names or goals.

Yes, but that's not what the question was. The question was about the boons for playing Season 5 scenarios which have boons available when played by characters from specific factions.

I'm sure this will be addressed in the upcoming Guide. I would also expect that for this purpose, the new factions will map to their predecessor factions.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

It also kind of matters for other things. I made a character Osirion a while back just so I could run through the Destiny of the Sands, and really not that interested in Scarab Seekers (unless they are secretly the new Shadow Lodge under Grandmaster Torch, which could be a real possibility), so I'm really considering switching out Factions. But I'm not certain I'll be able to run part 3 by the time Season 6 starts, due to a lot of new players recently that are not in the level, players asking for an Aasimar/Tiefling bash of the 1 and 1-2 replayable scenarios, and just life and work the next few weeks.

Ideally, that will be my next scenario for this character, and I can play them as Osirion, get the reward and flavor and story, then decide about switching afterwards when I find out which Faction will fit and what direction I'm wanting to go.

If it turns out I can't play it before then, need to switch factions before then, and/or can't qualify for finishing out that story as desired, I don't know. I might just drop playing the character instead. Not sure. But, I'd really like to be able to plan fir it either way instead of waiting till last minute if I have to. Or maybe I'll run it in time and no worries. :P

It would appear to me that Liberty's Edge is probably the closest thing to the original ideals of the non-destructive Shadow Lodge we'll see again. I'm definitely intrigued.

Spoiler:
Destiny of the Sands fills in a lot of the background about GMT if you know a lot of the basics. It really doesn't come out too much on the player's side, but between the, well, possibility of something related to his curse, his original party's name, and other connecting the dots, it might work out a certain unexpected way. Then again, it might not. It's one of those deals where if you have played through, I highly suggest you reread it afterwards, unless the GM added a lot of extra flavor that player's probably wouldn't normally get.
