Advanced Class Guide

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Just a few weeks ago, we announced the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Class Guide, an exciting new addition to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game due out next summer. While we talked about it a fair bit at Gencon, this blog post is here to get you caught up on all the news!

This 256-page rulebook will contain 10 new classes, each a mix of two existing classes, taking a bit from each class and adding new mechanics to give you a unique character. Around the office we're calling them "hybrid classes." You can think of the magus (from Ultimate Magic) as our first test of this concept. It takes some rules from the fighter, some rules from the wizard, and then adds its own unique mechanics.

At this point, you're probably wondering what new classes you can expect to see in the Advanced Class Guide. So far, we've announced five of the ten classes.

Bloodrager: This blend of sorcerer and barbarian can call upon the power of his blood whenever he goes into a rage. He also has a limited selection of spells he can call upon, even when in a mindless fury!

Hunter: Taking powers from both the druid and the ranger, the hunter is never without her trusted animal companion, hunting down foes with lethal accuracy.

Shaman: Calling upon the spirits to aid her, the shaman draws upon class features of the oracle and the witch. Each day, she can commune with different spirits to aid her and her allies.

Slayer: Look at all the blood! The slayer blends the rogue and the ranger to create a character that is all about taking down particular targets.

Warpriest: Most religions have martial traditions, and warpriests are often the backbones of such orders. This mix of cleric and fighter can call upon the blessings of the gods to defeat enemies of their faiths.

Of course, those are just half the classes in this book. There are four more we have yet to reveal.

"Four?" you say. "But I thought there were ten!" And you would be right—because I'm about to let you in on another of the classes that will appear in this book, which we haven't announced until this moment!

Swashbuckler: Break out your rapier and your wit! The swashbuckler uses panache and daring to get the job done, blending the powers of the fighter and the gunslinger! For those of you who don't use guns in your campaign, fear not—the base class is not proficient in firearms (although there will certainly be an archetype in the book that fix that).

But that's not all! This book will also contain archetypes for all 10 new classes, as well as a selection to help existing classes play with some of the new features in this book. There will also be feats and spells to support these new classes, as well as magic items that will undoubtedly become favorites for nearly any character. Last but not least, the final chapter in this book will give you a peek inside the design process for classes and archetypes, giving you plenty of tips and guides to build your own! Since class design is more art than science, this won't be a system (like in the Advanced Race Guide), but rather a chapter giving you advice on how the process works.

So, there you go. That's six of the 10 classes that will appear in the Advanced Class Guide and an overview of what else you can expect from this exciting new book. While it's due to release next August, you won't have to wait too long to get your hands on these classes, because we're planning to do a public playtest here this fall! Check back here for more news as the playtest draws close!

They won't give a non-prestige class a two-word name. That's something the design team has been consciously avoiding so far, as far as i've heard.

Funnily enough, I'm 3/4ths done with the version of that I'll be posting for this one.

Hopefully the playtest will be released early enough tomorrow to have some playtime that same day.

It probably matters where you live. If you're in Europe or Australia it'll be quite late in the day for you, if you're in the Americas it'll probably be closer to midday or afternoon or so depending on timezone.

I'm hoping it's up before I go to work, so I can print it out and read it on my breaks.

1) This book will include archetypes, feats, and other rules elements for these "hybrid" classes, so if there's something you don't like about a hybrid class, perhaps there will be an archetype that swaps out the thing you don't like for the thing you do like. Frex, someone said they liked the skald but didn't like how it inspires others to rage, and would prefer having inspire courage instead, perhaps there could be an archetype that does that (or a feat, or something). Much of the design of the rest of this book is about plug-and-play options for the hybrid classes to use thematic rules elements from other base classes, and vice versa.

2) There will be a separate forum here at Paizo.com for the playtests. The blog that announces the playtest will have a link to it so you can easily find it.

3) Positive playtest feedback is more effective than negative playtest feedback. Frex, "I'd like it if the skald had a way to get inspire courage" is better than "the skald sucks because it doesn't have inspire courage."

4) We're not changing the class names.

Sooooo then what about an archetype for the Bralwer named Von Punchyface?

skald- William Wallace (consider that he could speak and understand both Latin and French as well as his native tongue and English)
warpriest- Constantine

Sherlock Holmes is a spellcaster?

An ironic statement, considering Paizo is technically a third-party publisher of d20 content.

I'm with Orthos regarding Holmes. To me he is an investigator. Batman is a gestalt investigator/brawler. Wolverine being a bloodrager is also a stretched in my opinion. Maybe if there is an archetype with little or no spell casting. For Constantine being a warpriest, I have to ask which version of him?

The Hunter has been described as an animal-companion-focused class. Doesn't sound Aragorn to me (even if Gimli is fuzzy).

I will not say the skald sucks because it doesn't have inspire courage.

Although I might say "I'd like it if the skald had a way to get inspire courage".
;)

I'm just glad I can finally play a Bard-barbarian! :D

A cookie to whoever came up with the idea of mashing Barbarian and Bard! @-}--

HO = Half orc and is a core race. your statement really doesn't answer my question....

I had no idea HO meant Half-orc.

You want an answer before the playtest begins?

I'll give you my answer when I've read the play test document ;)

I was curious because by the time I am able to download the doc I will only have 30 mins til game time and I need to get it made as fast as possible. I'm leaning more towards Shoanti but that's just for the bonus feat plus no penalties on any ability scores. As opposed to the HO that doesn't get the bonus feat. I cant see that ferocity and weapon profs are better than the extra feat at first especially when I'm wanting to go full tribal

Sounds like you've answered your own question, then. Though I'd consider the half-orc if the Deathless line looks appealing.

Unless I find it absolutely horrid, I will be putting the Swashbuckler forward to my players for consideration when making up characters for the upcoming Skull & Shackles/Razor Coast/Freeport campaign I will be running. :-D

Not so sure that qualifies as "sedation" in civilized countries...

So are they releasing the play test at midnight Pacific time. Hmmmm.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

I doubt it will be released at midnight. Most likely, it will be released when there are people awake and in the office to help make sure things go smoothly.

Liberty's Edge

And honestly, probably fairly late in the day. It has, in the past, tended to be well into the afternoon Pacific time before the files have gone live for the other playtests.

So.. how do i send you caffine at midnight local time?

Well, first you figure out which building on a campus that isn't Paizo's HQ that Ross works at...

Not sure what giving him caffeine at midnight would do.

While I'm sure he'd appreciate the caffeine infusion, having him bright eyed and bushy tailed won't help Paizo's release date any. =)

Dark Archive

Well I am sending all my good spirit juju to the developer's for a midnight release, so I can go over it all before my Accursed Halls game tomorrow afternoon. ;p

It is unlikely to be posted before 10am pacific time. I usually see the blog posts arrive around noon central time. I suggest sleep that way you'll be freshly rested when you read it and it should be there when you wake up.

Want good guidelines? Expect 6 PM PST tomorrow, be happy if it's 12 PM PST.

Be really confused if it's earlier than that.

Fixed that for you there.

I have volunteering all day tomorrow. It's actually very tempting to stay home so I can download the playtest...

I work from home. So I can just look at my non-work computer during break or lunch to see if it's available. Still won't be able to read it while working, but I'll be able to download it at least. ^^;;
