Pathfinder Battles Preview: Shoot 'em Up!

Friday, March 28, 2013

With its piratical theme, the Skull & Shackles Adventure Path is a perfect campaign for gamers looking to add a little gunplay to their fantasy. This summer's Skull & Shackles Pathfinder Battles miniatures set therefore includes a few pistol-packing figures that will help you bring your black powder fantasies to life on the tabletop.

Guns are controversial in fantasy gaming, so you won't see a TON of them in this set (or in the campaign itself, if you don't want ‘em), but they are a great thematic match for pirates on the high seas, so we couldn't resist including at least a few of them here.

Up first is our very favorite gun-wielder, Lirianne, the iconic gunslinger we first introduced back in Ultimate Combat. Lirianne has an incredible amount of detail sculpted into her outfit, and her costume motifs bring a hint of the Old West to the High Seas. This Medium figure is slated at the rare rarity.

Here we have Tsadok Goldtooth, the first mate of Kerdak Bonefist, Hurricane King of the Shackles Isles and probably the toughest pirate lord of the southern seas. Old Tsadok here is a half-orc in a fine coat with a cool pistol and a nasty snarl. Our photo accentuates the colors on this figure and makes them look a little more primary than they look with the figure in hand. The green of Tsadok's flesh, for example, matches that of other orcs and half-orcs already produced in the Pathfinder Battles line. Tsadok is an uncommon, Medium figure.

And last up this week is the Hurricane King himself, Kerdak Bonefist! Take a close look at that pistol hand, folks. Let's just say Mr. Bonefist earned his last name the hard way. This Medium, rare figure is absolutely phenomenal in hand, easily one of the best in the set and one of the most finely detailed and well painted Pathfinder Battles miniatures to date.

Our partners at WizKids continue to outdo themselves with every aspect of these miniatures, from sculpt to paint application. I'm amazed every time they bring new figures to the office, which has been happening at an almost weekly pace lately. (For example, we're half-way through approving sculpts for the NEXT set, and have seen all but about three figures in this one).

What I'm trying to say is that it's a great time to be a prepainted figure collector, and it's a great time to be collecting Pathfinder Battles! Now I'm off to go shoot a gun into the air in wild celebration of awesome miniatures.

See you next week!

AWESOME!!!

Although I really didn't expect Lirianne as one of the iconics in this set (and while not a bad thing at all, I find myself wondering who iconic character #2 will be).

***Not to thread jack ... but Erik (or someone in the know) any further news regarding HUGE minis and the encounter packs idea that was hinted at?***

Best,

Dean

Very nice. These three will definitely add flavor to nautical themed campaigns. The minis in this set are hypnotically chanting to me "get the Skull & Shackles AP".

I really like these. I am old school gamer that likes alternative weaponry in my fantasy RPG. I recall having a blast in the old days running Expedition to the Barrier Peaks and mixing a little scifi with the fantasy. So these will have uses in my campaigns beyond just running Skull & Shackles. Tip of the Hat to Wizkids.

Silver Crusade

Awesome! I was so hoping that there would be gunslingers and other wielders of firearms in this set.

Kerdak Bonefist - You say Medium, rare; I way Well Done!

Though that said, I still want a goblin pirate yeearrrr!! ;-)

Sczarni

A goblin pirate would be awesome. There is a crew of goblin pirates in the shackles if I recall correctly. We need to see some minis for them!

Also, all three of these look fantastic. I hope they make a mini of a certain Alkenstar Gun Dealer too!

Iconic Gunslinger? Sold.

Wouldn't want a ton of pistol packers but these look amazing. The detail is really good. Can't wait to get my hands on 'em. Keep them coming!

Ugh. Gunpowder and fantasy role-play don't mix. Pass.

While I am not a fan of the Gun in my game, I love the idea of giving the AP a chance and these figures will help.

Damnit... I'm gonna have to wait forever to get all the core class iconics aren't I? They all look good of coarse. Idk if i wanna use em considering the last time I ran a world with guns, every player used a gunslinger except one, and i spent half the game listening to players b@#%! about what i would and wouldn't give them grit points for. But anyways, besides the fact that i personally have been turned off of gunslingers as a class and the fact i would much rather have my iconic druid and monk (And my GOD do I need a good monk figure *hint*hint*HINT!), Lirianne is still one gorgeous figure and packed to the brim with detail.

Pretty easy fix to that. Just don't allow the optional class rule and tell your players there's a limit to how many gunslingers there can be. I had the exact same issue with bards and rogues in my first few games.

Re: Lirianne - Called it! ;)

Marcus, the good news is that there are only Lini, Sajan, and Seltyiel left of the original iconics. And Seltyiel isn't really core anymore.

So there's still a decent chance of getting one of your requests this set. Though I would think Seltyiel or Alahazra may show up instead, with the others in one of the next couple.

I like the variety. Keep'em coming.

I run my games in a homebrew setting with no guns, so these are of no use to me.

Why is this half-orc NPC an uncommon? I can see making it uncommon if it would be of general use, but a half-orc with a gun isn't something most GMs will need many of, if they even need one.

Sovereign Court

My guess would be because they can only make so many things of the rare persuasion. One of these had to be uncommon.

Any GM running Skull and Shackles will be pleased to get Tsadok. Any GM with Black Powder or Steampunk in their campaign will likely not mind more than one. There are a lot of different kind of campaigns out there. I for one like seeing the variety.

Why is this half-orc NPC an uncommon? I need a bunch of these, so it should really be a common. Half-orcs get no love.

While I'm still getting used to the idea of Half-Orcs being green, I'm good with this guy being uncommon. I like the long coat he is wearing and the fact his sword is already drawn.

What kind of pistol is that he's holding? It looks a lot like a double-barreled pistol, but with four barrels. It seems to short to be a pepperbox.

My bad, after closer inspection I think it's really only a single barrel pistol. All the more reason to have the sword at ready!

These are some great looking minis, and its good to see Paizo is trying to give a little something for every one. Although I'm not a big fan of firearms in my fantasy campaigns, I am looking forward to the opportunity to replace those guns with swords.

On that thought, does anyone know of any plastic/resin based weapon accessory packs?

I believe the complexity of the sculpt and/or detail of the paint job have significant bearing on the common/uncommon/rare determination. The fact that he's uncommon means he's getting some love because the mini requires more work to produce.

Maybe not as much love as you want, but you've got to start somewhere, right?

If one NPC in particular shows up, there will be one major bad-a## female half-orc pirate in the mix. I hoping for that at least :)

Great news on Lianne. I like having minis to match the iconics for PFS.

Can't afford cases anymore, so to the singles I go!

+1! We need a female Half-Orc, and I can't wait for Imrijka :P

And what is with all the hating on Black-powder weapons in fantasy? Particularly Pirate-themed fantasy? Pistols are part of the genre, and I for one expect them when pirates are mentioned. Unless your talking Danish Pirates of the North Sea, but as I recall most people call them Vikings (which makes little sense, since 'viking' is a verb and not a noun, but oh well.)

Fact is that like it or not people guns are a part of the Pathfinder game, and they are an OFFICIAL part of the Golarion setting. They are also grossly under repressented in fantasy miniatures. Does the whole set have or need guns? No. But people are getting up in arms over 3, count 'em 3 minis that do.

Like I said, guns are a part of the pirate genre. Just as they are a part of the Aisan-action genre of fantasy, and I can only hope that when a Tian -themed set is done, that there is a Vanara Gunslinger and a peasant harquebusser of some description (and city police with a man-catcher polearm, but that's another argument).

(having rescanned I guess 3 negative posts is not alot; sorry for the thread-jacking)

It's been a never-ending debate, that's for sure. Personally I agree on the pirates thing: Not even flintlock pistols? Come on!

I think most of the complaints are because of the actual Gunslinger class, though. Not necessarily just the existence of firearms in Golarion.

Exactly. Firearms are fine if they actually fit the world, it's the Gunslinger class. I would've rather just seen variant rules for a gun wielding ranger. The Gunslinger just bugs me sometimes cause it takes away a lot of the inconveniences that made guns fair in a sword and shield environment. That and come on... Lirianne isn't as cool as Sajan... acording to the rules, a Monk can technically deflect bullets right?

Edit: oh and Imrijka. I forgot how bad ass she looked, but yeah there's a noncore iconic I'd settle for.

I'm willing to bet we will be seeing Sajan in this set or the very next (along with Lini), so hopefully we all can be happy with that.

Lirianne is personally one of my favourites along with Imrijka, so I'm glad to see at least one of them so soon. I was assuming I wouldn't see either until a later set, after all the other iconics had been done.
Them and Damiel, but I think he'll be sooner rather than later.
