Reign of Winter Mittens

Friday, November 23, 2012

Winter's almost here—are you ready? Warm mittens are a vital part of adventurers' gear, protecting hands from the cruel cold that nips at fingers and blackens bare skin. To help you survive with enough fingers left to grasp a sword, I hereby present to you the Reign of Winter Mittens!

When I heard about this Adventure Path, I immediately started wrestling with charts and experimenting with patterns. The cozy mittens that are the final result are decorated with motifs representing the Reign of Winter Adventure Path's key elements: a large snowflake representing Baba Yaga, smaller snowflakes representing the 14 queens of Irrisen, the date on Golarion (and on Earth) when the AP begins, and of course the Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga itself. Happy knitting!

Actually I'd imagine they're quite warm.

Sorry, somebody was bound to say it...

Dude, I can't believe that after a year of living in Montana... after 20 in Florida... I actually am going to knit myself some mittens for the winter.

Temperature humor aside, my reaction exactly.

Mentioned this to my wife. She took a look.

"What? Sweet! I have a new-found respect for your hobby."

Thank you, Judy.

Concurrin'! This is awesome.

But I can't stop imagining them as oven mitts in scenes involving children and ovens. :O

(have you considered Reign of Winter sock hats? Keeps the head warm!)

edit-Also wonder if someone could sneak these into any art order involving Irrisen commoners, with one just wearing their mittens...

I hope the holiday card has Feiya or Lini knitting them. That would be awesome. Or maybe Balazar wearing the hat version next year. Crazy gnomes don't get enough art appearances.

And witches being pushed into them?

I'm so glad you all like them—they were so much fun to design and knit! And Mead, I totally want to see yours when you're done!

Question: What do you mean by "sock hat"? Do you mean a toque/beanie, or do you literally mean one of those hats with a big sock at the top? It actually wouldn't be too hard to use these motifs in a hat pattern. I'm imagining a ring of dancing huts around the body of the hat, and snowflake earlaps...

Now I'm itching for some quality time with Excel!

I think the toque/beanie is closer to what I was thinking of. I was visualizing something between that and the "Link hat", whatever the proper name for that is.

This is a common problem for me, I can see plenty of "medieval/fantasy hats" that I remember from artwork/cartoons/videogames/movies/books from my childhood but I have no clue what they're actually called. I usually have to reference another work of fiction entirely...

"You know that Ragged Cap from Skyrim. That's what my alchemist is wearing, except with a little dangly bit towards the back."

"Oh, like the leather cap from Diablo 2?"

"Yeah, that!"

Also, :D!

Let there be hat—I've added a chart for a beanie as one of the photos on the Ravelry page! (Might split this off as a separate pattern, and maybe add ear flaps, as time permits.)

Quick instructions: Same gauge, yarn, and needles. Cast on 120 sts, work corrugated ribbing for about 1/2", and work 5 repeats of the chart. Optional: Top with braid or pom-pom. For smaller heads: Take the needle size down to US 2 or 3. For bigger heads: Adjust brim length, or since the hat chart is the same width as the mitten chart, you can just use the year or gate/tree motifs to add length.

Oh wow, awesome update! I'm passing this along to some folks.

I can totally see Irrisene people wearing these now. :)

Okay, that I know. I think I'm thinking of something else still, but that's probably best kept to another thread.
