Starfinder GM Screen

Raise Defense Screens!

A good GM screen can be so much more than a way to hide campaign notes and die rolls from nosy players. At its best, it can function as a handy reference tool that obviates the need for a GM to constantly consult her books. But just as importantly, the side facing the players should be something interesting for them to look at, an image that evokes the style and themes of the game and helps get them in the zone.

Stay Alert, Holy Plasma Cannons Ahead!

PaizoCon manages to land on near-perfect holiday weekends with bright and glorious sunshine making the first signs of summer at the forefront of minds in the Pacific Northwest. And as we all know, that means that convention season has begun—with local cons, big ones, and the Best 4 Days in Gaming (Gen Con) looming around the corner! I'm taking a few minutes here at the nice and quiet (and empty) Paizo offices to give those of you who didn't make it out the PaizoCon 2017 Preview Banquet last night a glimpse of some of the fun you can expect this summer (and beyond!).

A Talk About Cooperation

There are three important duties for every Pathfinder field agent: Explore, Report, and Cooperate. These tenants remain a core foundation of the Starfinder Society organization. Today, I want to talk a little bit about cooperation, specifically factions and how they fit into the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild.

Class Preview: The Soldier

As soon as we announced Starfinder, there were fans that wanted to know what kind of options there would be for the heavy-armor-wearing, magic-plasma-cannon-firing, jet-packed combatant character. While any Starfinder character can do those things if they dedicate themselves to getting the needed resources, the character who does it most easily (and gets the most class features designed to work with such actions) is the soldier. This is the description the soldier gets in the Starfinder Core Rulebook:

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Adventurer's Guide (PFRPG)

PaizoCon Begins in... Less Than 24 Hours!

As I scramble to get my games ready for PaizoCon, I realized that I hadn't yet prepared a blog for Adventurer's Guide for today. I suspect I'll be talking quite a bit about the book in seminars and to folks for the next few days, but in the meantime, let me just show off a few more pieces of art that I particularly like... I'll have one more post next week with a bit more to say about how to integrate Adventurer's Guide into your game if all goes according to plan as well. In the meantime... enjoy the pictures!

Sealed Heroes, Sealed Friends

The Pathfinder Society recently won the Sargava Chalice in the eponymous footrace, but few know that the trophy cup is actually a cyclops relic dating back to Ghol-Gan. In Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-21: Champion's Chalice, Part 2: Agents of the Eye, the PCs carry the chalice deep into the Kaava Lands, where the relic can grant them a unique window into the past and a fallen empire. Author Nicholas Herold takes us to a long-forgotten corner of Golarion's history in this Tier 1-5 scenario, and it's up to the PCs to avert an imminent crisis with the help of desperate allies.

Meet the Iconics: Obozaya

Obozaya was born on Vesk Prime, the planetary capital of the Veskarium, to a family of low-level military bureaucrats. Distinguishing herself with her determination and ferocity on the sports field and in the dueling ring—if not in her academic studies—Obozaya quickly established herself as a top-notch military cadet, enlisting as soon as her basic studies were complete.

Pathfinder Tales: Gears of Faith

Interview with Gears of Faith Author Gabrielle Harbowy

In the madness of the Starfinder launch, I wasn't able to do my usual blog about the new Pathfinder Tales novel, which was a real shame, given that Gabrielle Harbowy's Gears of Faith is a novel that's been so eagerly awaited by fans here on the Paizo boards! Fortunately, Pathfinder Tales author Liane Merciel (of Nightglass, Nightblade, and Hellknight fame) swooped in to save the day, interviewing Gabrielle on what it was like to write the novel. For my part, I'll just say that I knew since the very first installment of "Inheritance," Gabrielle's web fiction story that introduced the main characters of Gears of Faith, that Keren, Zae, and the bold riding dog Appleslayer, were going to star in a novel someday—there was something so deep and genuine about all three of them, and their relationships with each other. So it was gratifying but not surprising that the fans felt it, too! And now, 3.5 years and a new publishing partner later, the book's finally hitting shelves, and I couldn't be happier about it. But enough from me—let's hear from Liane and Gabrielle!

Class Preview: The Mystic

The setting of Starfinder is very much a science fantasy universe, with a lot of science fiction ideas mashed together with more fantastical and supernatural concepts. This isn't an accident, but an inevitable conclusion to asking the question "What happens if advanced technology becomes commonplace in the Pathfinder universe?" In Starfinder, it's well accepted that there are forces beyond the understanding of pure science which, whether you want to refer to them as arcane, divine, or psychic, are best thought of as just "magic." There are options for players who want to add just a little magic to their character (ranging from the Connection Inkling and Psychic Power feats to the phrenic adept archetype, which can be accessed by any class), but significant magical ability is primarily in the hands of the mystic and technomancer classes.

Wes's Last Words

I could write one heck of a self-indulgent retrospective. I'd start by going on about how I've been working at Paizo since November 2003 (I would have been 22) and how my first credit was as an assistant editor on Dragon Magazine #316. (I'd probably illustrate that section with that issue's cover.) Then I'd go on to talk about writing a ton of D&D stuff, starting to write adventures, and learning how magazine work is actually time travel. After that would be the scary but exciting times—starting Pathfinder Adventure Path, disguising a game as a textbook, long lines, yada yada. Things got wild after that.

For those inducted into the faith of Pharasma, the Lady of Graves, death is not an ending, but a doorway: an entry into a new existence and way of being. Meet the Iconics: Iseph

As biomechanical entities, androids can theoretically live forever with the proper repairs. While some embrace this form of immortality, most androids live what they feel is a full life—usually around a hundred years—and then voluntarily instigate a process called renewal, in which the android's soul leaves its body, allowing a fresh android soul to inhabit it. Most people consider this a joyous occasion, metaphorically equivalent to the old android giving birth to a child, and understand that a post-renewal android is an entirely new person who just happens to inhabit the same body. Yet not all people are willing to honor this change or forgive past debts and slights, and such is the case with Iseph.

Adventurer's Guide: Behind the Scenes

We've been pretty vocal (I hope!) about one of the big changes to the rulebook line with the introduction of significant amounts of world content from Golarion in the upcoming Adventurer's Guide. In fact, we've been relaxing the "world-neutral" element of the rulebook line for some time, as far back as Occult Adventures where we abandoned the generic names for planes like the Boneyard and just used the Golarion/Great Beyond names in there. By lifting this self-imposed restriction, we're not fundamentally changing the type of content we're putting in rulebooks, but it does allow us to make our own rulebooks work even better with our own campaign setting.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #117: Assault on Longshadow (Ironfang Invasion 3 of 6) (PFRPG)

Ironfangs and Scumbag Dames!

With Thurston Hillman's Pathfinder Adventure Path 118: Siege of Stone about to hit subscribers, this is a great time to talk about themes and stereotypes and writing with intention. You often hear that people insist that their pop culture—their video games, their action movies, their roleplaying games—should be free of politics and "agendas," but the truth is that the personal is just politics on the small scale. Your own needs, opinions, and preferences become politics when shared or opposed by multiple people. As an author or a game developer, at some point you have to accept the responsibility that everything you create carries cultural weight, that you describe what is and isn't normal, what is and isn't moral, who is and isn't a protagonist or a villain or even a person. The orcs of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books were self-loathing and aggressive, without personal goals or culture, while elves are nuanced and individual and reflect a long and storied history—one of these groups is defined as "people" while the other are faceless opponents. Killing a hundred of one is the background noise of the trilogy; killing one of the other is a tragedy that Tolkien uses to dredge up emotion in his readers.

Pathfinder Tales: Gears of Faith

Gears of Faith Sample Chapter

In Gears of Faith, Keren is a sworn knight of Iomedae, proper and disciplined in every way. Her partner, Zae, is the opposite—a curious gnome priestess of the clockwork goddess, who loves nothing more than the chaos of her makeshift hospitals. When a powerful evil artifact is stolen from a crusader stronghold, both knight and gnome are sent to the great city of Absalom and immediately drawn into the clandestine search for the stolen Bloodstone. Sure, they may not be the most powerful or experienced members of their organizations, but that's the whole point—with legendary champions and undead graveknights battling in their race to recover the stone, who'll notice one young knight and a gnome healer? All they have to do is stay alive long enough to outsmart a thief capable of evading both gods and heroes. No big deal, right?

Class Preview: The Operative

Last Friday we took a look at the envoy. As soon as we announced the operative as a class, many fans began to theorize it would act as the "star thief," and wondered how it would be different from the rogue class in Pathfinder. There are certainly some thematic similarities between the two classes, but just as a 16th-century highwayman's tactics and skills were different from a modern hacker's, a character with a knack for stealth, security systems, and unexpected attacks in Starfinder should be significantly different from a Pathfinder rogue. We need a class that can easily serve as spy, assassin, thief, hacker, investigator, and trailblazer. That was the spark for the operative, which gets the following description in the Starfinder Core Rulebook:

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Adventurer's Guide (PFRPG)

Organizations of the Adventurer's Guide

As opposed to the hardcovers before (Bestiary 6) and after (Book of the Damned), the Adventurer's Guide is very much a product for players. The central idea of this book is to focus on several of the more famous (or infamous) organizations active in the Inner Sea region of Golarion. This book is not intended to present these organizations as things your characters can join (we've covered that topic before in numerous ways, after all) but instead to use these groups as themes for the presentation of new archetypes, prestige classes, magic items, spells, feats, and other player options for your characters to take. In effect, these groups serve as your characters' adventuring guides, in that once you become affiliated with them, they can guide your character into new specializations, talents, and powers.

OPC Log—3 Desnus 4717

I took some time this weekend to recharge my gaming batteries. On Saturday, I attended a mini-con at Mox Boardinghouse in Bellevue. During the afternoon, nine tables battled through a myriad of pregenerated specials and harder scenarios such as Pathfinder Society Scenario #4-26: The Waking Rune. I got a chance to chat with local players and look in on some of their games. I left before the start of the multi-table interactive special event, Pathfinder Society Scenario #7-00: The Sky Key Solution. I hear there were several deaths, but the Society emerged victorious.
