Gregor waves to Keydas as he heads off to the town hall, before making his way towards the graveyard.

As he approaches the entrance he utters a spell and then proceeds.
Gregor casts Mage Armor.

He will spend a couple hours patrolling the area looking for signs of recent disturbances.

Gregor takes his time surveying the area as he goes. Taking 20 on Perception checks (Total=22) and taking 10 on Survival checks (Total=10).

Two days, aye, two days should be ... good

Two days? What am I going to do for two days to prepare? I don't even know what it is that I am preparing for or how to prepare for it...

Filiana quietly follows the two men back to town.

Ladruca, the woman takes the note and sighs.

Very well, come with me.

She takes you to a back room filled with dusty tomes and papers. she smacks awake A sleeping man sitting in the chair. Wake up and do your job you oaf.

The man looks around weary eyed before finally seeing you. His look is one of quiet disgruntlement. He has a spear at his side.
Before going back to the front she turns. Please, do not take or damage anything. Otherwise you will be fined. She then goes to leave.

to save time, you can take the rest of the day to research one subject, either harrowstone itself, the whispering way, or the prisoners it kept. Harrowstone or its prisoners will be a know. Local/history check, if you are untrained you can still make one of the checks, if you are trained you will get a bonus. And you can spend a full day researching to gain another attempt.

Gregor, you find little evidence of any activity save for the night before.

Ladruca admires the shield and rapier for a moment but chuckling softly.

''A long sword and a sickle bankrupted me, I don't think i'll be able to afford weapons as fine as those even if I could use them''

He hands her the agreed upon sixteen gold and heads towards the door.
He turns to address the smith before heading outside.

''I will contact my friend about your remaining gold. You should have it by tonight. Farewell and a pleasure doing business master dwarf, we shall surely see each other again.''

He waves his hand as he departs and begins heading towards the local pub, intending on waiting for the others.

35 gold for a single sword? I still can't believe that greedy dwarf. Well, I had best get on her good side. Im sure we'll need her help again and those prices are unacceptable.

Arriving at the pub, he takes an unoccupied seat at the bar and smiles quickly at the bartender.

''Bartender, my good man, would you be a peach and get me an ale?''

He takes a moment to observe the pub and the rest of the Patrons.

What does he see?

"To the tavern. We will consult the others." Tonight we plan our raid for the glory of the Inheritor! Nostro walks with renewed purpose at the thought.

He then looks for records pertaining to those who were imprisoned within Harrowstone.

"Harrowstone is a decrepit ruin, you can feel the wrongness coming from it. We looked for alternate ways in outside of the main gate but there was nothing there outside of climbing over the walls. We decided it best to wait till we were all prepared before delving into its depths."

He leans back in his chair and looks over the other patrons that are there. One out of mild curiosity and secondly out of training. He always kept an eye on newcomers in case they were dangerous and for their own safety. Ustalav was an insular, paranoid place and Ravengro was the epitome of such fear.

After searching the rest lands Gregor heads back into the town and heads to the tavern.

Upon arriving he waves to his companions and takes a seat.

"Hello. So what preparations do we need to make next?"

You all make your way to the laughing demon. When you enter, you are greeted by the bartender and owner Zokar A large burly man. As you sit at the bar, the bartender comes to you and is a surprisingly friendly man considering the town. He offers you several choices of food and drink, Vampire steaks, wolfballs, Culled Corpse Chowder, Liquid Ghost, Zombie Drool and several other items to which he makes several joking jibes at the foods true nature. He will bring you your selected items. As you sit you notice a large number of farmhands, most keep to themselves, some stare warily towards you. However most seem kind, or drunk, enough to not mind your presence. As you sit and listen you overhear several rumors being thrown around as the hours pass.

please, do do me the favor of picking a meal.

One drunk comes up to you, slurring and stumbling. He gives you a whispered warning.
The food here isn’t all fun and games—and it’s no coincidence that Zokar serves more corpse chowder after unpopular merchants “leave town,” never to be seen again. If Zokar invites you into the Demon’s back room for a complimentary taste of the nights special don't accept! He looks around as if committing a crime and quickly stumbles away

You overhear someone calling themselves a deptuy talking with a few other farmhands.
I swear, Jominda Fallenbridge does more than brew potions—she brews drugs and poisons as well and sells them through agents in other towns. Why else would the sheriff be so interested in her business? We Patrol near here shop more than anywhere else. He is just looking for concrete proof!

In a back corner a woman talks about the prison with two other men.

Did you know, now and then, if you visit Harrowstone near sundown, you can hear the ghost of the warden’s wife wailing and sobbing from somewhere within the ruins? I bet she haunts the prison now, forever mourning her husband and attempting to frighten anyone who intrudes on the prison.

A man at the table responds, nodding his agreement.
They say that Harrowstone’s executioner still guards the execution balcony on the western side of the prison, and that on some, dark, nights, his scythe can be seen patrolling the balcony on its own, as if carried by an invisible spirit or vengeful will.

Another, older man bahs and shakes his head
Them Stories that Harrowstone is haunted are just that—stories. The ruins are still dangerous sure, but what most folks think are ghosts are only the nasty vermin that live there.

The other two just give him a tired look.

Keydas, you spend time matching documents and manage to come across a list of prisoners with their related documents and nicknames, however you only managed to find two today.

Keydas:

Father Charlatan, Sefick Corvin: Of the five notorious prisoners, only Father Charlatan was not technically a murderer, yet his crimes were so blasphemous that several churches demanded he be punished to the full extent of Ustalavic law. Although he claimed to be an ordained priest of any number of faiths, Father Corvin was in fact a traveling con artist who used faith as a mask and a means to bilk the faithful out of money in payment for false miracles or cures. He became known as Father Charlatan after his scheme was exposed and his Sczarni accomplices murdered a half-dozen city guards in an attempt to make good the group’s escape.

The Lopper, Vance Saetressle: When the Lopper stalked prey, he would hide in the most unlikely of places, sometimes for days upon end with only a few supplies to keep him going while he waited for the exact right moment to strike. Once his target was alone, the Lopper would emerge to savagely behead his victim with a handaxe.

Viktor will smile and thank the burly man when arrives with his order of "Vampire Steaks", the smell of the seasoned meat making his stomach rumble in anticipation. An order of greens arrives as well and is placed upon the floor where Gunnar eagerly begins to chow down with no hesitation whatsoever.

"I am ready whenever you all are. Perhaps, if we feel like the risk is worth it, we can use the spirit planchette to contact the dead for answers. We'd need to be careful though, many spirits are envious of the living and may strike out at us. Especially in such a place as Harrowstone." The guard murmurs when the bartender leaves to tend to others, looking back at the group. "I will maintain a watch tonight and tomorrow night at the fountain, to see if the farmer was truly guilty or not. Hopefully, the weather will be kind enough to provide some light for me."

Viktor quiets down as some of the gossip grows loud enough to be heard. Rumormongering was a common thing for a town this small and isolated and his attention was focused specifically on the conversation regarding Harrowstone.

"What have you all learned? Anything of us?"

Zokar smiles, two vampire steaks, one with stirges blood to drink. Will do.

Ok, ball is in ya'lls court, so to speak. Discuss and I'll add in as necessary, just let me know when you are ready to move on.

Ladruca grins despite himself when he hears the bartender's jokes about the food.

Haha, nice to see someone who can joke around in this dreary place.

He nods at the bartender and orders.

''Zokar was it? Ill take the wolfballs and whatever you call ale in this establishment.''

Ladruca takes a moment to gather his thoughts and listen to the rumors.
He snaps out it when he hears Viktor's question.

''I have some news. Lean in close though, this should not be overheard if we still want to avoid others knowing our business.''

He then leans in close and when the others do the same he whispers.

''Keydas,Kendra and I were attacked by a zombie today. We destroyed it with minimal effort but it was much more powerful than those we fought last night. On top of that was the location. we were attacked in an alley in the middle of the market place. Whoever is directing these things is getting bolder.''

He then leans back in his chair.

''What about you guys? encounter anything strange today?''

I'll approach the smith tomorrow and see how much gold we are talking. Perhaps I could work towards it. Their progress is good, access to the records is important.

After Viktor's comments on Harrowstone, Nostro adds, "The rest comes later." The 'law' here hates us, no need to risk poking the bear.

Unamused, Nostro stares at the bartender as he lists his options, his face a stonewall. Attempts at humor are appreciated, but this is ridiculous. "Culled Corpse Chowder. Whiskey on the rocks," he says flatly.

Once in relative privacy, he adds his thoughts to the groups. "Unlikely the bartender is a cannibal. Would run out of food more quickly or risk attention. Poison and drug work is plausible. Temptation is difficult to resist over time. Especially gold. Harrowstone should be investigated at night. Even hearsay may hold merit."

"Viktor. I will accompany you. One man is easily surprised. Even with a goat." Nostro seems pretty firm in his belief that you shouldn't be alone, but not that it has to be him that guards with you.

He looks hard at Ladruca. A zombie in broad daylight? Bold. Very bold. Are we too late already? "We must act soon. Two days at most. I fear for the town if we wait longer." When he is absolutely certain that nobody else is within earshot or paying attention, Nostro recounts the events of their day.

Taking a seat, he says, "I have had some success. I will have to do more research tomorrow. Fill you in later. Did everyone else have a pleasant day?"

Ladruca drinks deeply from his ale and pops a wolfball in his mouth. He burps when he is finished and pats his stomach appreciatively.

''I dunno how vampire tastes.'' He indicates the steaks with his fork.''But wolfballs taste pretty damn good!''

He chuckles lightly before returning to his meal.

He contemplates his next move as he eats.

When Nostro and Viktor suggest keeping watch he nods eagerly.

''That is a fine idea Viktor, but i do have one small reservation. Are we still intending to keep a low profile? I ask because i don't imagine that you see very well in the dark Viktor. If you don't need light too see or have no reservations about standing in the middle of the street with a lit torch then ignore my objections. Just food for thought.

He lapses into silence again.

Hmm, most seem like they have some kind of plan for tomorrow, what am I do that is useful. I could go back and hit on the greedy dwarf smith but that might not be the best use of my time.

When Keydas arrives Ladruca flashes him a quick smile.

''Good evening partner. Just the man I wanted to see. Hope the research went well.'' He then pats the sword at his side to attract Keydas' eyes too it. ''This my good man is your new sword. That greedy smith wants thirty-five gold for the damn thing. I gave her fifteen as a deposit but if you want this sword I promised her you would bring her the remaining twenty,Tonight. If that's too much let me know and ill return the blade and get my gold back. In fact i'll accompany you in wither case. Dunno if her home is near her shop or if she lives in her shop but in either case I gave my word.''

When he mentions the greedy dwarf he looks around to make sure no one is listening and lowers his voice a touch.

He then continues his meal still pondering his plans for the next day.

Maybe the bartender can point me in the direction of someone who needs a hand?

"I welcome the company, Nostro. Always move in pairs, keeps one alive and safe for longer." Viktor would say after patting his mouth clean of the steak's juices, nodding at the man. "It'd give me time to get to know the man more, since we'll be together for a month it seems." His thoughts were interrupted as Ladruca made his points known, each of them important to discuss if he was to try and catch the dog murderer unaware.

"Depends on the weather, my friend. I am hoping the clouds clear up tonight and that the moon is out. Should be enough to see what is going on, especially with both Gunnar and Nostro out with me." The thought of a zombie being out in broad daylight, especially so close to their ward, only seems to make the vigil make more sense for Viktor. He didn't have any particularly special duties to attend to for next two days, so long shifts would be acceptable and he could catch his rest in the early morning. Finishing his steak, he looks to the others and nods.

"So...we have our goals then. We shall see how fortunate we are. If any of you need me, I will be about in town looking for the best place to keep watch from. Excuse us." He would then rise from the table, nodding in thanks to the bartender before walking out with the goat not far behind.

When Keydas is finished explaining that he has no desire in the sword, slight anger and confusion flashes across Ladruca's face. Thinking back to his conversations with Keydas earlier in the day he realized that he must have inferred his need for a sword.

''Well, damn. Apologies Keydas, it was my mistake. If the rest of you will excuse me, I'm going to see the bartender and then I need to see a dwarf about some gold. Wish me luck.''

He waves to them as he gets up and approaches Zokar at the bar.

''well my good man, thank you for the food. It was quite good and im sorry to hear about all these rumors people spread about your food.''

As for work, I suppose you could ask Alendru Ghoroven at the Unfurling Scroll, that man is the only man I know that could give Old Lorrimar a run for his money in dusty tomes. Filiana finishes her wolfballs with some delight. These are very tasty! Not at all what I was expecting.

Then she sits for a little while, savoring her ale and just quietly watching the others. When Viktor and Nostro leave she thinks briefly about following along with them but then decides against it.

No, I don't think so ... Nostro was pretty clear that he doubted my place... I suppose I shouldn't let that bother me, but it does. Besides, I am tired of all this traipsing back and forth. I think I shall just go back to the house.

So when she finishes her ale, she pays for her meal, complements Zokar on the food and then makes her way back to the house. Once there, she makes herself a cup of tea and sits down near the fire to study the scrolls that have been left in her care.

Apologies, her shop, like many here, works as a double building. She lives in the back.

Viktor and Nostro, the moon is half obscured by wisps of clouds, causing it to be difficult for Viktor to see things from a distance. You don't think it will rain, but are not sure.

let me be sure, you guys are wanting to stake out the memorial yes?

Ladruca takes the money back from the smith's hand and smiles sadly.

''I am sorry that I had to go back on my word that way and i sincerly thank you for accepting my need. I do promise you though that I will want that silver morningstar and when I find some silver you shall be the first I see.''

He offers her a small bow in thanks and departs from the shop.

Ladruca returns to the tavern for one more drink, chatting with the bar tender and any nearby patrons before returning to Kendra's for the night.

Those of you that chose to stake out the memorial see nothing out of the ordinary. Seems you were perhaps right in your accusations.

Ladruca, The smith merely grunts and gives you a nod as you leave.

It is now the next day. Actions?

Keydas awakens the next morning well-rested. He hopes that Nostro and Viktor aren't too fatigued for the day's events, as there may be much to do this day. Donning his clothing and equipment, Keydas heads downstairs to partake in breakfast with the others. Once completed, Keydas will again head to the city hall, there to continue looking through the records regarding Harrowstone, through which he seeks to learn more of the prisoners who were in the prison when it burned.

Entering the building, he says to the caretaker, "Good morrow. I have come to look through the records again. As yesterday, I will not remove anything and will treat everything with the utmost respect and care, under the capable supervision of you and your charming associate."

Keydas will spend the day searching the town archives again. Since you said another day searching would give me another attempt, I will make that Knowledge (history) roll, using my Lore Master ability to treat the roll as a nat 20 for a 29 total.

Gregor will wake up and gather his equipment and clothing and head downstairs, to have breakfast with his comrades.

Then he will head into the study and get comfortable as he delves into the tome "Serving Your Hunger" once again. He will utter a spell and begin looking through the book.

Sleeping in a little later than usual, Nostro wakes up to everyone already downstairs. An uneventful night is a good one. Rising, he prepares for the day and makes his way downstairs. "All. Harrowstone deserves a raid in two days time. Are we in agreement?"

If everyone is in agreement, are there any special preparations we would like to make? I know there isn't a lot considering we are level 2 and without much gold.

Once the group has spoken, he will eat breakfast and then spend an hour or so maintaining his equipment. Satisfied that he can no longer make improvements on it's condition, he will go back inside to speak with Ms. Lorrimor. "Zombies attacked you. Will you require protection?"

As Gregor heads to the study, Nostro addresses him, "The Book will try to consume you. Don't let it. Check the Unfurling Scroll and meet with Alendru Ghoroven when you are finished. Innkeep said he has books." You get the sense that he isn't trying to give you and order, but simply making a suggestion.

Nostro intends to go into town and check the General Store and the Silk Purse for work to be done. If our host needs protection, he will do so, either bringing her or staying here instead. He will accept company :)

Viktor awakens the in the late morning, still upon the couch within the downstairs room, with Gunnar laying against him. With a gentle pet, the man stands up and enters into the dining room to enjoy breakfast with the others.

"The fountain was left unbothered. I will wish to examine it one more night, just in case the suspect is nervous after hearing that one man was arrested for the crime." He murmurs, tiredly sitting in the chair nearby before yawning and grabbing a cup full of juice and a biscuit to nibble upon. Gunnar enters in as well, settling against the warrior's feet and falling asleep once again.

"Two days is fine with me, perhaps sooner if at all possible. I'd like to get evidence of whatever is going on in there as quickly as possible." When Nostro offers protection to Kendra, Viktor nods in agreement with the man. Their main purpose here was to ensure the lady's safety above all else, it was their employer and friends's last wish.

Once the others have departed, Viktor will look to the lady of the house and give a small nod to her. "If you require escort, Gunnar and I will be more than happy to protect you. We...are out of element here with research and book-reading, a good past-time but we are not scholars. Do you have any suggestions?"

Filiana comes downstairs bright and early, having had a quiet evening and an early night. She stops for a moment when she gets to the downstairs room and sees Viktor and Gunnar sleeping on the couch. Then, moving as quietly as she can she makes herself a cup of tea and grabs an apple before sitting down in a corner to enjoy both.

Once the rest of the group arrives and begins to have their breakfast and Viktor is awake she will join in to the conversation.

I can be ready to go today if you want, there is nothing much for me to do. I spent some time looking at the scrolls last night, and I might just head in to town and see if I can get something to keep them in. They are magical things, so I don't want to just shove them in my bag any old how. On that subject though, I am no expert but I feel that one of them isn't really my kind of magic. I don't really know any better way than that to put it. I feel like I could make it work if I had to, but it might be better suited to someone like you Master Ladruca. What do you think?

She holds out the scroll for Ladruca to look at.

Translation: Hide From Undead is a Cleric/Oracle/Inquisitor spell. She gets that it's not really for her. She might be able to cast it with UMD (she's quite good at it but the DC is 21). She probably doesn't know for sure what specific classes it is for but feels it is probably divine in type. And in the end she is more comfortable talking to Ladruca than Nostro at this stage so she's offered it to him :)

Regardless of whether Ladruca takes the scroll or not, once the general conversation about plans for the day has played out she will be heading in to town to try and by a scroll case.

Ladruca wakes up and does his morning stretches. Checking his burns from the night before he is pleasantly surprised to see that they are mostly healed, leaving him with no more significant injuries.

Heading downstairs for breakfast, Ladruca will greet everyone as they come down.

When Nostro explains his plans and asks for any tag alongs, Ladruca nods affirmatively.

"Nostro, I will join you if you do not object."

Ladruca will smile and wink when Filiana offers him the scroll.

"I never say no to free stuff"

Also, before we set out I should mention that there is still 1 Haunt Siphon, 1 Potion of Cure Light Wounds and 5 Flasks of Holy Water as yet unclaimed. If nobody lays claim to them before we set out, Filiana will carry them just to make sure the party has access to them at need. But any of that extra stuff will be in her pack, so if you think you will want quick access to it, feel free to take it :)

Kendra smiles at Nostro and Viktor, but shakes her head. I plan to spend most of my day here. Besides, the... zombie... was not directed at me. We were merely the first to come across it I believe. As for suggestions, I cannot say. If you like and don't have anything else in mind, I wouldn't mind some company while I tend to this old house today.

Nostro and Ladruca, and any other that accompany them.

You head to the silk purse, Its one of the cleanest and best kept looking buildings in town. The large sign hangs overhead as you go to enter. As you near the building and notice that two well armed men are sitting outside the door, busying themselves with conversation. When you approach the door they eye you both up and down with wary eyes. They do not stop you but you feel them keep watch even after the door closes behind you. Inside there are another 2 men, seemingly twins, sitting on opposite ends of the building. Behind the counter are two men seemingly bickering over a small gem. Both wear what appears to be straw top hats, blue and white stripped dress shirts with a bow tie and extremely similar hair styles, one however sports quite a mustache. As you enter a bell can be heard and they both look to you. The one without a mustache speaks.

Ah Salutations and greetings friends. Have you come to perhaps take a loan? Or purchase some of our finer items we have received in place of gold and silver? I assure you good sir they are all one of a kind!

The other man speaks up And of the best quality, with the lowest prices around! Why, look at this magnificent rose colored gem. Why, this smokey quartz here is quiet the rarity, collects abound that would pay larges sums for this stone! To own one is a display of wealth! I however have no such dreams of granduer myself, a humble businessman you see, and I need to find this gem a good home. So, I'll give you an amazing deal sir, a mere 500 gold for this Magnificent rarity of a gem.

The one that spoke first speaks up again. And, thats not all. We'll throw in a free polishing of it for free! As well as a guarantee of higher self-confidence! Free of charge!

The clerk with the mustache speaks up again. Oh brother of mine, I do believe these folks are adventurers yes? Then nothing but our best would do! This ring here is quite the potent magical item. It allows its wearer to fall from any height without being harmed! Like a feather!

The first clerk speaks again, And, if you buy both today we would give you a greaaat deal! For both these wonderful items, you would pay nothing more than 2400 gold pieces! Thats a savings of 1300 gold! Who could resist this offer! Now, would that be gold, platinum or other? He smiles as he pulls out a clipboard and ink quill.

Gregor, another spell craft check if you would good sir.

Filiana wanders in to town with Nostro and Viktor. She had intended to go to the Silk Purse last, just to have a browse and see what's there, but upon discovering that they are going there she will accompany them. She looks slightly startled at the sorts of prices the shop men are bandying about. Trying not to look too overwhelmed she has a bit of a look around for a cheap (<10gp) pair of earrings to buy herself. If she can find something for that sort of price that look vaguely like the star shaped earrings in her picture then she will buy them. Then she will move on to the general store and see about buying a scroll case.

apologies, I didn't have access to the book when last I posted, here you are keydas.

keydas:

The Mosswater Marauder Ispin Onyxcudgel; Only 5 years before his hometown of Mosswater was destined to be overrun and ruined by monsters from the nearby river, Ispin Onyxcudgel was a well-liked artisan and a doting husband. When he discovered his wife’s infidelity, he flew into a jealous rage and struck her dead with his hammer, shattering her skull and his sanity with one murderous blow. Wracked with shame and guilt, Ispin became convinced that if he could rebuild his wife’s skull she would come back to life—but unfortunately, he could not find the last blade-shaped fragment from the murder site. So instead, Ispin became the Mosswater Marauder. Over the course of several weeks, the cunning dwarf stalked and murdered nearly 20 people while searching for just the right skull fragment. He was captured just before murdering the daughter of a visiting nobleman from Varno, and was carted off to Harrowstone that same night.

The Piper of Illmarsh real name unknown; Before he snatched his victims, the Piper taunted his targets with a mournful dirge on his flute. He preferred to paralyze lone victims by dosing their meals with lich dust and then allowed his pet stirges to drink the victims dry of blood.

The Splatter Man Hean Feramin; Professor Feramin was a celebrated scholar of Anthroponomastics (the study of personal names and their origins) at the Quartrefaux Archives in Caliphas. Yet an accidental association with a succubus twisted and warped his study, turning it into an obsession. Feramin became obsessed with the power of a name and how he could use it to terrify and control. Soon enough, his reputation was ruined, he’d lost his tenure, and he’d developed an uncontrollable obsession with an imaginary link between a person’s name and what happens to that name when the person dies. Every few days, he would secretly arrange for his victim to find a letter from her name written in blood, perhaps smeared on a wall or spelled out with carefully arranged entrails. Once he had spelled his victim’s name, he would at last come for her, killing her in a gory mess using a complex trap or series of rigged events meant to look like an accident.

and Gregor, roll me a d20. Also, add the following spells to your spell book, you lack the magical power to cast them at the moment, but thats only a bit of training away.
blood bath, command undead, and create lesser undead.

Nostro tenses a little at the overwhelming amount over words spoken at him by the salesmen. I pray there is at least work for us to do here. Even if the ring does what they say it does, I couldn't afford it. I've heard of such things though, they do have their uses. With a slight grimace, he responds, "No thank you. I came for work. Have you any?"
