Things are continuing apace. I am still working on getting the history section written.

Potentially interested. Do love me some warlocks, although I also want to try a high-level bard. What other classes were people building?

A few questions:
1) When you say Unearthed Arcana, does that include web open stuff, like the tech spells for warlocks/wizards/clerics? Because teleporting through subway systems and animating electronics is neat, and very super-heroey.
2) Multi-classing: is it an option?

Well, my character concept and basic stats are largely in place. And I'm building up the character now with the 5E rules. :)

thunderbeard, you are more than welcome to submit a character, but please take a look at the game info and first post.

To answer your specific questions, I mean all of unearthed arcana that I have seen. including modern magic. and multiclassing.

and feats (someone asked me about that in a PM and it's worth mentioning here.

Yeah, I read the game info. Got something coming together, just minor choices left.

Also: any thoughts on the Modern Armor, or should we stick to medieval armors?

Dark Archive

I'd also like to ask about modern gear, shall we just improvise with tool proficiencies etc?

Is Proficiency: Computers, too much?

Will some classes have proficiency in firearms?

Magic Items are covered, but what about mundane gear, are we assuming that the WBL is going to be high enough by 8-12th level that nonmagical gear is essentially free (within reason).

Character more or less done, apart from gear, the 3 bonus/origin skills and quantifying the backstory.

Of course now I'm done I've had a different idea for a character, but no, lets persevere with this one.

Scarab Sages

Well, I'm dumb. I just found the campaign tab. Character in progress.

spinningdice wrote:

UA: Modern Magic suggests that "Hacking Tools" are essentially a tool proficiency that adds to Int, identical to how Thieves' Tools work but for electronic locks and computer security systems (effectively, just a different type of door). Using computers for other purposes requires an Int check; it's not specifically stated, but it seems suggested that Intelligence (computers) is a skill you can be proficient in for these purposes, similar to Arcana.

Scarab Sages

re-rolling now that I know what I'm doing:

5d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 6, 2) = 22
3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 4) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3) = 12

Dark Archive

Also I'm trying to hash out a bit of background, and was after some details.

Aliens were a character option, so they must exist, are they just individuals (Superman, Martian Manhunter) or have their been notable alien incursions (invasions or peaceful)?

Same applies (to a lesser extent, as it seems less impactful) for Magic and Enhanced, is there an aspect of prejudice against 'mutants' ala xmen, is magic commonly accepted as real, or is it just viewed as another power for superhero's?

Where is the game likely to be set, a particular city (real or not), world-spanning.

Not really a rush for any of this info as I'm sure we can make a light background and fill in the gaps as we go along, but trying to add a little texture.

Scarab Sages

How are weapons as internalized powers working? Do the weapons appear out of the air like the Blade Pact warlock or are the bonuses and effects of the items triggered on unarmed strikes?
If you choose two weapons that grant a bonus to hit or damage do both apply?

Answering questions in order, as I was without internet for most of the day.

Modern armor and Firearms: You can take modern armor, but be aware that there is no magical modern armor. Firearms can be enchanted, however.

computers are indeed an Int tool, so you would want to take tool proficiency with them to be able to effectively use them.

Same for vehicles (no one has asked yet, but I figured I'd get it out of the way).

About gear: Go ahead and take gear (within reason and appropriate to your character) and have it in your gear list, but as you are all prisoners, you will not have access to any of it at the start of the game. That will change, however.

The Modern armor link that Thunderbeard provided above has the list of firearm proficiences broken down by class. We'll use those.

About Aliens: While there has been a single alien invasion of the plant, the League of Adventurers kept it quiet, because it involved a still unknown race of aliens who could assume the form of anyone that they attached some of their biotechnology to. They didn't get the powers of that person, and that was what allowed the league to realize a planet-wide invasion was under way.

Most people assume that aliens are in the realm of science fiction, but there is pretty wide-spread belief that aliens are possible.

Enhances (the term that I am using to replace mutants, but it would also apply to people not born with powers but that gained them at a later time, like daredevil or the flash) do indeed suffer prejudice, but much like being a non-CIS person in America now, that prejudice varies widely from person to person, and responses range the gambit from terror to curiousity, to (because the internet exists in this world as well) fetish subculture.

Speaking of subculture, as those of you who have sent me a PM have noticed, there is a very real subculture of people who track stats on adventurers, like people who track sports stats in our world. Add to this the fact that there is a combat sport that involves the use of powers and it's not uncommon for someone with powers to be a superstar, especially if their powers are flashy or they are charismatic.

As for where the campaign is taking place, you will be starting in an unnamed maximum security facility that was created by a pair of adventurers who are both rich (one is a technology-based adventurer, and one is a magic-based adventurer) and saw a way to make a truckload of money by offering a facility to privatize the incarceration of adventurers. They have 3 different facilities throughout the world whose location and security are kept at the highest levels of secrecy. When a prisoner serves his sentence, their memories are altered to remove specific memories of their jailors and the layout of the prison.

Several psychic and magic based adventurers have tried to crack the mind wipe, but so far it has stuck.

Once the game starts, it will likely involve quite a bit of globetrotting, for reason that will become apparent to some of you (or perhaps all of you).

I'm going to keep it simple, so we will still keep most of the same nations that exist currently on earth, but some of them will have vastly different histories, as Adventurers have seized power in a few different nations.

Scarab Sages

Cool. Working on background now.

This sounds pretty cool. When does recruitment close?

Gonna settle on a couple character options this evening. Hope there's a gap for me.

Scarab Sages

He's accepting several applicants and there are two tables, so chances are good.

Sent three character options.

Scarab Sages

I must say this is the weirdest recruitment I've ever been in. I know there's a lot going on, I just can't see it.

Scarab Sages

That Sean fellow wrote:

I'd like to know this as well.

Alright, almost finished...

Figure I'll do my rolls. Then it'll help me decide. I still have two other choices I haven't sent that might be cool.

Enhanced Character Rolls:

5d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 1, 3) = 20
3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 6) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 1) = 5
3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5) = 17
3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 1) = 8

hopefully that roll helps me narrow to down.

Scarab Sages

I'm not entirely sure how a 5e sheet is expected to be formatted, so let me know if I need to fix anything.

I think I'll give it one more week for people to at least dot, then we'll close the campaign to new interest.

After that, it'll be a couple of weeks to let people finish up characters, and then we'll get started (so basically some time around the beginning of the year.

With that being said, here are a list of people who I have received a PM about regarding characters:

EmEss
CrockOclock Ophone
Kuey
Mainer
Spinningdice
Choon
That Sean Fellow
Thunderbeard

If I have missed anyone, let me know.

About the recruitment, I realize it's a bit wierder than normal, but my thinking is that none of you have ever met before, so you'll just know each other (and some of the npcs) by reputation.

Okay cool. So there's some time. I literally just rushed out a character concept cos I wanted to make sure I got in :)

Scarab Sages

Cool. I'm not opposed to how this is being run, by the way. I just have recruitment anxiety and not seeing the process as it happens sends a small part of me into the vapors.

So after we level up to level 10 with our rolled stats, we still get the Ability Score Bonuses/Feats for being 10th level correct?
(that should help me with the 5 that I rolled for one ability)

Scarab Sages

I think so, yes. If not then I need to change some things.

yes, but you only get ability score increases based on class level, not overall character level. One of the benefits fighters get, for example.

got asked this a couple of times, so I figured just answering once would be the best way:

If you have the ability to learn to cast new spells (like wizards can) then you can have double your level in that class in spells that you can add to your spellbook. So, for example, if you were a 10th level wizard, you would get the stock 2 spells per level, plus 20 levels worth of spells to add to your book, mainly because while there is a TON of spell lore in existance, USEFUL spell lore is at a premium.

Okay I think I got it right. PMed you my sheet to let me know if I missed anything and what's the next step :)

Dark Archive

Okay, mostly getting down to details now:

Vehicle proficiencies, how are they divided, is it just one proficiency in 'modern vehicles', divided by Ground Vehicles, Air Vehicles, Water Vehicles, Space Vehicles. Or into completely independent vehicles (motorcycle, car, truck, tank, helicopter).

Also it's nice to have a list of players, hard to tell from the thread how many we're looking at.

I'd love to get together with the other players and discuss our superhero's a bit. compare the powers or concept maybe? Are we still keeping characters to ourselves?

I think the GM intends to have everyone seperate till in game.

Crap! @SpinningDice is more clueled up than I am. Totally forgot about vehicle proficiencies. I'll have to add that now. Dammit.

Super curious as to who plays what though as I have a constant complex that my characters are always the most boring of the bunch.

Also hope I'm making my character correctly. Wondering how things will translate into powers. And if more stuff will be added from the GM's side after we've completed our side.

Scarab Sages

I just assumed we all would have drivers licences or at least the equivalent skills. None of the classes have vehicle proficiencies, so I didn't think about it.

I would love to get together too, but GM is keeping everything under wraps, as that Sean guy said. He wants us to RP our first meetings. The suspense is killing me and there's probably three weeks before go time. :(

Haha okay, it's good to know I'm not the only one then ;p
I can hold my breath, just letting you all know I'm excited for whatever is brewing under the surface.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

vehicle proficiencies would be ground, air, water, space. Consider the first 3 as class proficiencies for every class, but the last one is a class proficiency for Aliens only.

Are vehicles Int, Dex, or some combination of both? (A la mounts, which are a Dex-based proficiency despite counting as a tool instead of a skill)

Scarab Sages

Background submitted. If I need to change anything to match your idea of the lore then please let me know and I can adjust.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Vehicles are Dex-based skills.

Been following this and I thibk I have a PC idea I like. I'll post more when its more fleshed out

I'm pretty excited. I'm taking notes so that I can run a 5e Superhero game for my home group. Looking forward to playing here with everyone. By background I'm gonna try finish today.

Scarab Sages

I'm doing my best to be patient...

Me too!

Okay, I have at least 5 completed submissions, so I will be closing new dots this Friday. From there, we'll have 2 full weeks to get characters built. I realize that for quite a few people this time of year is hectic, so if you need a few more days after the above deadlines, I'm willing to extend it to you. That being said, please do try to finish your submissions before the 30th. I plan to start the campaign on the 2nd. If your character is completed, please go ahead and make an alias and put your character sheet into the alias, but remember to spoiler everything.

I'm going to have some stuff that will go in your race and class fields on your alt, which will basically be knowledge checks by DC to gain information about your character.

Also please remember that things are in spoilers for a reason, and if it doesn't pertain to you, please do not read them.

Dark Archive

Would you prefer Alias' to be in the 'hero' name or cover name, i.e. "Batman" or "Bruce Wayne"? Guessing the former?

Scarab Sages

Mine has no alter ego, so no worries for me. Do you want us to post with the new aliases here or PM you with them when they are complete?

I would go with whatever the world at large knows you as.

Working my origin story now. Questions. How long ago was the invasion? And is this prison a secret from the public?

The prison is known to the public, but their locations are not. The two adventurers who built them often go on television and tout their inescapability.

The alien invasion was discovered in 1984, and lead to a 5 year period of near paranoia among the League.
