Greetings all,
I am putting the finishing touches on a game that I've been building on the backburner for a while now. For now, this will just be an interest check, but if I get enough responses we will turn this into a recruitment thread (mainly because I don't want to create another thread specifically for recruitment):

The setting is modern age. In a world similar to our own, approximately 5% of the population has powers, or supernatural abilities that are outside the normal range of man. Given a population of roughly 6 billion, this means that approximately 300 million people have some sort of power. Of these, most are things like low-powered telekinesis and the abilities of that nature. This covers approximately 200 million people with powers.

Now we turn to the remaining 100 million, who have powers that can change the course of nations or determine the outcome of battles. Your characters will be such beings.

Colloquially referred to as Adventurers (because the first major heroes and villains were called that by the media of the day, and the term stuck), these often costumed individuals battle in the streets of most major population centers, and people can't get enough of it. The most well-known adventurers have sponsorships and can support lavish lifestyles. Even minor adventurers can achieve cult status and experience.

The power level of adventurers is tracked in levels, according to a metric setup up by the League of Adventurers, or LOA. Membership is mandated for all superpowered beings, and any adventurers not found to be members are usually assumed to be villains of the highest caliber.

Our protagonists will all be members of the League of Adventurers, and all of them will be of at least the 10th level.

.......................................................................

Into this world I am looking for between 6 and 12 characters, all of which have been imprisoned in the Cube, a thought-to-be-inescapable prison designed to hold adventurers. Whether you are here because you were a hero that was framed or a villain that deserves to be here (or somewhere in between), that will remain to be seen by your backstory.

We will be using a modified version of the 5th edition ruleset of dnd, mainly because I like making superhero games using non-superhero systems. Please see the spoiler below for the changes to character creation.

What I am looking for in an application: I would like to see a character that is fully fleshed out, and not just a clone of an existing hero. You can draw inspiration from the major characters in various comic universes, but I want to see a if-not-unique, then at least novel concept to the character. As one more wrinkle, Once we start recruitment, Please do not discuss your characters here, as I would like to have your group meet each other organically. Just state your interest, and then I will pm you so that we can discuss your character's background and motivations.

Posting requirements: once a day during the week (Monday-Friday) and at least once on the weekend (although I recognize that life happens and sometimes you can't post on the weekend). I will do my best to post twice a day (including weekends).

Social Contract stuff: Initially, I will be running things in spoilers, until the group is brought together. If you can't play a game without reading all the spoilers, please do not apply (but you are more then welcome to watch!)

Why the large group?: Ideally I would like to run 2 tables of this game, with groups segmented by what we will call the catalyst for now. I will also add that there will be likelihood of PVP in this game, because the groups efforts will be at cross purposes. I am not assuming that this will for certain occur, but you should be aware that it is a very real possibility.

When will recruitment end?: Tentatively the end of the first week of December, but I would want to get a good table (or hopefully 2) worth of characters.

I have moved the character creation options to the Game Info, so please look there for character creation details.

I would like to express my interest. I have wanted to play a supers game for a long time.

How often (if ever) would you imagine leveling up to happen? I'm asking primarily because I don't believe the Mystic currently has anything written after Level 10.

[EDIT] Also, do the Class/Background restrictions mean that Multiclassing isn't a thing, or that you'd only be able to multiclass into something else that is listed for your origin?

Good questions Yoricks. As far as the mystic goes, I have some plans for the class that should allow it to carry over (I'm currently writing some more skill options.

As far as levelling goes, the League of Adventurers has options to test whenever you want, even for people that are in prison. So when an Adventurer believes that they should be evaluated, they can come into the office and be tested, or in cases where that is not possible, representatives will go out on location.

For multiclassing, I think the best way to handle it would be to stick within your origin. I know that doesn't help psychics or mage origins, but I think it will do the best towards maintaining the feel that I'm going for, which is trying to make as comicbook a world as possible.

All of that being said, multiclassing outside of your origin would not be outside of the realm of possibility, but it would not be available at character creation, and I would prefer it to be something that happens in game.

I hope that answers your questions.

Okay, cool, good to know. Lack of multiclassing hurts my concept a bit, but it makes sense.

Another question / comment - Wondering if it's intentional that the Origins don't give any added Skill / Tool proficiencies since that's something that Backgrounds do in vanilla 5e.

I had several characters for the <sigh> Marvel Super Hero Game. I would love to dust one of them off again and put them back to work.

Dark Archive

No discussion here, but shall we still roll stats in-thread? Or just roll actuall dice/use other online roller and you'll trust us?

Once the recruitment begins, we'll be using the dice roller here should it be required.

ooh, this is interesting.

Edit: Whoops. I just saw that it was 5e. I'm less enthused about this. I withdraw my interest.

I've thought about it, and what I think I will do is just allow people to take 3 of the following of their choice:

Skill Proficiency
Tool Proficiency
Language

That way you still have that benefit, but it removes interaction with Origins.

That sounds fair.

Edit: I am curious, and I hope you don't mind my asking this, but why is 5th Ed your system of choice?

No chance of getting a Pathfinder version of this I suppose? I love the idea but have no experience or particular interest in 5th Ed.

The main reasons I am going with 5th edition is that it is a system that is less bogged down with rules, and that I have already successfully run or participated in superhero games using the pathfinder system.

Well, it unfortunately doesn't look like there is much interest in this, but I'll give it another week and see where we stand. If we don't have at least 5 people who are interested, I'll close down the thread. If we get upwards of that, I'll turn it into a recruitment thread.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

I'd like to express interest in this. Have a couple of ideas if it goes ahead.

Im really interested in this and would love to discuss possible characters.

Well, that was fast =P

Okay, I'm a man of my word. Consider this an official recruitmment.

Let me get everyone who is interested to pick their origin, roll the appropriate dice rolls in a spoiler, and then send me a PM and we'll get started talking about building characters.

Recruitment will run until I get at least 5 solid characters, at which point I'll close the recruitment to dots and then give anyone who is interested another week or two to finish up their characters before finally making my selections.

Again, Ideally I would like to have 2 tables, given the nature of things that are going to happen, so if you are interested but new to 5th edition, please feel free to dot and I'll make sure you have at least a good basis of how the system works.

I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with!

Sweet!

As origin I was thinking Alien.
Appropriate dice rolls in a spoiler:

Spoiler:
No rolls needed for aliens?

Sending a PM.

@crock: correct.

Dark Archive

Still going back and forth but for now I'll try building with:

Rolls:

Enhanced:
Focus: 5d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 3, 3) = 20
attribute: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) = 11
attribute: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3) = 13
attribute: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4) = 14
attribute: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4) = 11
attribute: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4) = 14

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

Also thinking of alien origin.

Spoiler:

No Roll!

Sending a PM.

I'm still interested, just having some issues with the crunch not quite fitting what I have in mind. I'll send a PM in a day or two if I come up with an idea to make it work.

Send me a PM Yoricksrequiem and we'll hash it out.

This is for an...

Spoiler:

Enhanced
5d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 4, 2) = 15
3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2) = 5
3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1) = 5
3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6) = 12

Hmm...do you allow rerolls?

•question in spoiler

Mainer:

You can either keep your roll or take this one:
5d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2, 5, 1) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3) = 13

Vrog:

I will take the roll you have offered, and thank you for it. I'll send you a rough idea of the character this weekend via PM

As an update, I am working on a list of the most well-known heroes, both past and current. Soon as I get it finished I'll get it posted to the Game Info tab and then update the information here.

So far I am enjoying people's submissions, and look forward to seeing the final results.

. Just want to watch

Oh I just stumbled on this. Very interested. Moderately familiar with 5E (seeing I'm GMing a campaign, haha!). And always loved superhero genre. Keen to see how this works out. Give me a bit of time to work out the character idea though.

Interested, yet another alien in concept so far.

Is it too late to post my interest? I'm looking at the natural origin

Character Idea:
Unfortunately, I just watched Doctor Strange couple of nights ago, and just re-read Book of Magic (Neil Gaiman) a while back, so the idea of a magic user is stuck in my head. :) Looks-wise, I'm also stuck with him wearing a trenchcoat (part of the Trenchcoat Brigade, woohoo!). (A redesigned robes of the archmagi?) He gains his magical powers through his connections to interdimensional planes - he sees, hears and interacts with what are across the dimensions. Oh are they only in his mind? But hey, I just pulled out an storm elemental, so they must be real, dammit! His connection to reality is somewhat tenuous although he is trying his best to keep it together. Mechanics-wise, conjuration school is likely the closest to this concept. He got thrown into prison for killing a young boy, under advisement from a celestial angel. No one of course knew that the boy had already been infested by a devil, and that was the only way to save his soul. Or was it entirely in his mind? Hmm....

@Ironclad Nomad: Not to late to post interest, no. Feel free to PM me with your character ideas and we'll go from there.

@Kuey: Interesting idea. send me a PM and I'll have some follow-up questions for you.

stats dice roll:

4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6, 3) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1, 4) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 1, 5) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 2) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 4, 2) = 15
So that gives 10, 10, 14, 13, 13, and a 20 for Int. Not fantastic, but not too shabby.

I have the first decade of Adventurers up, as the "Golden Age" of adventurers begins in the 20s, with the introduction of the Golden Eagle (the first confirmed super powered being).

Scarab Sages

Color me moderately interested. However, I have exactly zero experience with 5E. Will this be a problem?

stat roll in case it takes a while to respond:

4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 6) = 20 = 17
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4, 6) = 18 = 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 2) = 10 = 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 2) = 12 = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 1) = 16 = 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 6) = 18 = 16

That seems good. I'll look over classes and creation rules until I hear from you.

Being new to 5e is not a problem. It's actually a pretty straightforward system.

Scarab Sages

Alright. I should wait for a PM then?

Go ahead and send me one with your character idea and we'll go from there!

Scarab Sages

Hmm. 5e is weird. I see only one feat on the srd I found. Did WotC seriously only release one feat under the OGL?

Just saw this thread and I am definitely interested! Sounds like a fun idea for a campaign. I have a bunch of ideas and will try to narrow it down to one tonight. Once I have the idea, I presume I PM you with it?

Choon wrote:

WotC's OGL strategy with 5e was less about releasing all of their *content* and more about releasing the *structure* of 5e. So (I believe) each class has only 1 archetype, they only released a subset of the classes and races, etc. So if you want 3pp to create their own feats, you really only need to release one to give the framework for others to create more. There's no need to release all or most of the feats. It is definitely not about creating a complete system for gamers to use, but allowing use enough for 3pp to work with - which is much of the intent of the OGL, although I admit that resources like d20pfsrd and 5esrd are incredibly useful as a gamer as a resource that is both electronic and (in the case of d20pfsrd) compiled across products.

Scarab Sages

Ok. I get it. So there isn't a resource like the archives of nethys or d20pfsrd where I can fully build a 5e character for one game without going out and giving them money?

Choon wrote:

Yes and no. 5esrd.com is a great resource with all of the OGC on it, and you can make a full character - you just don't have all of the options, but there's still a decent amount. Feats are not a good example since they are entirely optional in 5e. So, if you like the archetypes* they released for the classes, then you can use that resource and easily make a full PC. (Also, Unearthed Arcana on the WotC site has more options for some classes and those are free, but they are playtest material.) However, if you want more options, then, yeah, you need to give them money for a PHB.

* In my experience, the archetypes are probably the most limiting thing I have found in trying to use OGC for making characters, but that might just be me.

You are more than welcome Ken, btw. Shoot me a pm and we can talk about your character.

As far as the OGL goes, I'll see if I can find a good online resource like archive of Nethys for 5E. If I can, I'll post a link in the game info section and make an announcement here.

Scarab Sages

Did you get my PM, vrog. Just want to make sure the forum goblins didn't eat it.

Yes I did. I haven't had a chance to respond yet.

Since I've had a couple of people ask, If you want to create an alt for your character, go from it. Just remember to spoiler everything, and that if possible, please use your code name/what you are known by. Remember that you can use * or " to generate an alias that uses a name that's already been used.

I'm going to respectfully withdraw from this recruitment. hope everyone has fun playing!

Scarab Sages

So, how's everyone's characters coming?
