Temple:
Tyari inclines her head to Maurie, "A Noble thought, but in truth I was asked not to associate this Sanctuary with the Plague House. Though it saddens me that works people spent their time on to venerate The Inheritor go largely unseen many people in Trunau lost loved ones in that fire, fifty years is not such a long time Trunau has enough pain I would not remind them of an old wound. So my thanks, but no, if you can make use of anything made for Iomedae please do so with my blessings."

Barter Stones:
Araldus huffs, "Fancy words do not change the way things are, we all know how the Council would rules better than any foreigner, thank you very much. Although personally I agree written law would be preferable, especially when the perpetrator's Mothers are on the Council and might need a reminder. And duelling is certainly not acceptable in Trunau, the strongest is the rightest? What nonsense, offensive nonsense what is more."

The northernmost wolf steps up to snap at Grok, but its glazed bloodshot eyes seem to have trouble focusing and its jaws snap down on nothing but air.

One wolf retains enough instinct to race around behind Anvil and attempts to bring the great warhorse down in tandum with another, but their fangs sink ineffectively into Anvil's the thick hide of his barding.

Another wolf attempts to leap up at Cromwin's calf, but a shift of position cuts off his attack almost before it can begin.

Zove most wolves it looks like you can catch is 2, but as they have 2 HD that works out nicely.

Zove's sleep spell goes into effect covering an area just before Anvil and Cromwin in glittering motes of dust, and the two wolves within stumble with sudden lethargy. One of the beasts slumps to the ground, but the other shakes of its lethargy snarling with renewed vigor.

The party is up!

At temple:

Maurie nods sadly. "I understand completely, the walls themselves have yet to forget the horrors visited upon them it seems. That said, if I find something of the Inheritors that is small and portable I might bring it to you for safekeeping until such memories finally fade. History should not be forgotten merely because of the pain associated with it, and at one point that place had a positive history. You can tell simply by looking upon what has survived time and flame."

At barter stones:

Maurie shrugs at the man's words. "I am merely pointing out that to us... foreigners... common sense might not be as common as you would make it out. As for sanctified trial by combat, I prefer to reserve it for long standing grudges of which the origins are so lost to passion and time to be meaningless. Well, that an offenses against one party's honor that no typical legal reparation or mediation could effectively repair. I think, given my time with Miss Zove, that she might very well qualify under the former standard. Who started her feud with, seemingly, most of the townsfolk? Who can say but the Gods, and it is through sanctified impartially mediated combat that we can determine their verdict, at least on occasion." A small smile plays upon the Halfling's lips as she adds, "Of course, it is also my experience that abusive bullies will often back down and run away from their taunts when the prospect of having to defend them with their blood comes up."

Maurie approaches the remaining wolf and attempts to strike it from behind.

Cromwin turns Anvil in a tight, defensive circle. "Don't worry Brin, he'll do fine. Hya, Anvil, strike!"

Cromwins swings his warhammer defensively, missing the wolf near Grok by a wide margin, but warding off potential attacks. Anvil swings and slams down both hooves next to the wolf near Brin, barely missing it. Anvil's bite, however, tears out the wolf's throat, dropping it to lie bleeding on the ground.

Cromwin heels Anvil into attacking the wolf pinned between him and Maurie. Anvil lashes out awkwardly with one hoof and his teeth as he turns, missing entirely, but regains his footing and solidly clips the wolf on the shoulder with a kick from his other hoof. Cromwin takes a moment to recover in shock as the wolf bites Zove, but quickly kicks Anvil into action. Grok looks around after the wolf in front of him is killed, watching Zove cautiously as she kneels down before it. Must be some strange magic...oh...oh! Watch out! Then all is quiet again.

Grok walks to Zove, ignoring his leg, you alright? Grok looks at her appraisingly, noticing that she's not been badly wounded. He takes a step back, straightening and bending his leg a few times to make sure it works while cleaning his blade. Indeed, better head to the healers to make sure nothing bad's happened.

Grok looks over at the sick wolf in the car, cracking his knuckles one by one, wincing when he gets to the broken one. You don't look like one of them. After a moment he takes some meat out of his pack and offers it to the wolf, placing it on the edge of his sword and holding it out to the animal. A maned wolf...no pack...but used to interacting with the other ones? He glances at the corpses behind, then back to the wolf. He touches it lightly on the nose, brushing it with his fingertips, then offers it more meat.

The wolf gives Grok puppy dog eyes, but does not seem the least bit interested in the meat, with a small pool of glistening vomit in front of it. At first it winces away from his hand as if expecting a blow, but once none arrives it accepts his touch sinking back down onto the wagon bed and letting out a sigh.

A quick inspection of the scattered hay inside the wagon bed reveals five chain leashes and muzzles.

Basically he threw up the poison and is going to be sickened for a few minutes.

Okay, but Grok has no ranks in heal and no idea how it was poisoned, and doesn't really care so much, I think.

Grok stands up, looking around again, and back at Zove. Poisoned? Hmm...

No, not accidental, but what will we do? Grok looks at the rest of them for a moment, standing up. The knuckles on his right hand, which holds his sword, turn white. He sheathes the sword, then suddenly reaches over and picks up the wolf from the cart. It struggles somewhat and Grok bites it lightly on the nose, setting it down gently on the ground. Grok picks his meat back up, and then, offering it to the wolf once more, tucks it in a pocket.

He scratches idly at the wolf and glances back at Zove. Alright, huh? Look a bit more like you've just been attacked by an animal to me, healing's a good idea. He purses his lips, she doesn't agree. Can't argue, can't help, just deal with it. No worse than Brin falling in the church earlier, though he looks a bit stiffer. No poison then. Nothing actively hurting, burning the veins. Deal with it. Grok bends back down again, this time into a full squat, blood still streaming freely from his leg. He puts a hand on his knee to steady himself, then looks at the tracks.

Cromwin proves quite helpful, once again, seeming to have learned quite well how best to point things out, what the most helpful way is to find things, more coordinated to cover more ground. Thank you, Grok says, but it is not quite so sincere as it has been in the past, he looks almost distracted. Then he glances back up at Cromwin again, smiling his empty smile but looking the man in the eyes. Thank you, Cromwin.

Grok can discern little, but that the feet are booted, and from the size likely male, the length of his outstretched hand and about a third again.

A quick word with the gate guards reveals that no carts have passed through on their shift, meaning it probably came from somewhere within Trunau. At Sanctuary Tyari promises to check over the wolf corpses for poison to, once she has prayed for new spells tomorrow while Brantos lays on hands for both Grok and Zove. Unfortunately Tyari informs them that she has no means to ward off poison and is not powerful enough to neutralize it, and without Zove or Grok exhibiting any symptons there is nothing she can do for the time being.

The group head back to The Ramblehouse where a large fire roars in the common room, Zove is able to prepare her spells and the rest able to dry themselves off a little. I am just going to assume the Ramblehouse has a small stable since it makes things easier.

Zove's eyes go black as she kneels next to the wagon. "Did you say they were just here? If they were here we would have seen them...how do you not see something that's there...oh, could it be invisibility magic?"

Of course you can. Grok looks at the girl for a moment. Why would I give it a name? He scratches it behind the ears, holding his hand by its head while the little girl feeds it. Let's say... Grok pauses for a moment, muttering to himself unintelligibly.

Naurgost. That is his name.

Look, you can see the edges of the print eroding in the rain, where the older tracks have already worn smooth. Whatever this was..." Cromwin shudders. "Well, no use standing around here. With some luck, this will be connected to the Plague House, and we'll be able to solve two mysteries at once."

********************************

Cromwin stables Anvil, giving him an extra rub down while the rest of the group goes inside and checking over his body carefully to make sure that. "You did good today boy. We're going to make great guards, protecting Trunau from the orcs and whatever else comes our way. " Anvil whickers agreement and nudges Cromwin's arm. He chuckles, rubbing Anvil's nose playfully. "Oh no, I didn't forget. Let me finish rubbing you down, then I'll get your carrots. You definitely earned them today. " Cromwin finishes stabling Anvil, then goes and gets one of the servers to bring a bucket of carrots out before Cromwin joins the group in the ramblehouse.

Inside, Cromwin relaxes by the fire, drying himself off as Grok and the halfling girl feed Naurgost. When Grok suggests leaving for the Plague House, Cromwin shrugs, then sighs. "We've had quite the day so far, and I admit I just want to eat a hot bowl of stew and a good night's sleep, but I think you're right Grok. I couldn't live with myself if that digging in the basement really is a tunnel and Trunau was raided while we slept. I'm ready to go back if everyone else is. " Cromwin looks around expectantly to see what everyone thinks.

As the group turns to head towards the direction of the Plaguehouse Brin jogs up to Grok.

"Hey, Grok. What does that name mean? Naurgost?"

Brin pauses for a moment, but then interjects before the half-orc can answer.
He won't even know why I'm asking. Better not confuse him too much here.

"I only ask because names are important, whether we earn then, give them to ourselves, get them from others...the help define us in a way."

Brin, always in it for the story.

Naurgost, the Flaming Dread. Grok pauses for a moment, looking at the wolf's red fur, and the long, black mane falling to one side. I like fire. Not sure it'll define that one, but if it grows some and proves strong maybe it'll strike some dread in our foes.

"Hmm, fire."

Brin taps his index finger against his chin, pondering the sentiment.

"It moves fast, can be a tool or a destructive force, and when it is all said and done it leaves evidence of its passing."

Brin looks down at the wolf, smiling.

"I'm glad you've found yourself a trusted ally. I hear wolves can bond quite strongly with rangers out in the wilds."

Upon reaching the ruins once again Brin stops and gets into his pack. He pulls out a roll of parchment and the bit of cloth holding the nails Zove retrieved for him.

"A few moments if you will."

Brin moves up to the large wood frame of the main doors. He unrolls the parchment, and using the hilt of his sword, hammers in the nails to hold the sheet in place.

"There, temporary...but, I think that's the point."

Parchment:

There are lives that were taken here, they're all but forgotten.
Some would say it's worth forgetting, that ghosts and pain turn a place rotten.
We who tread here now wish to pass, our journey brings us through.
We will remember, as we pass, the extinguished lives of the down-trodden.

This notes means not much, to the living nor especially the dead.
It won't bring anyone back, nor help anyone ahead.
I merely leave it here as a token of respect.
May the living stay living, the dead stay dead, and may the truth of things always be shed.

He dresses himself up for battle once the deed is done. His shield and sword in hand.

"Are we ready for our journey into the ground?"

The halfling maid pulls a face, "Its not very cute... And you are a cutie aren't you Nauri?" She says gingerly holding the bone out to Naurgost who accepts it gently and begins gnawing upon it before the fire.

The Plague House is soaking the floorboards slick with hours of rain pouring through the open roof. With the dense cloud it may as well be night and for most of the party a light source is certainly required.

Probably around 5:30PM

Maurie shrugs, and follows along. "We had best hope that one of us can hit the undead rodent that remains. The only thing that seemed to keep it from chasing us was the sunlight, and we no longer have enough I would wager."

Out of curiosity, could Maurie coat her garments with a bit to imbue them with holy energy? Basically wondering if I could make it possible to strike it with my legs so imbued and squish the thing back to shadows and ash.

Zove fills her waterproof bullseye lantern with oil and lights it at the fire before departing. Calmly she turns to accompany the group, her 'friends' and notices Brin's note "What's this Brin, reads like a deciphered spell...like there's some hidden power underneath..."

Cromwin rides Anvil carefully up onto the raised first floor, taking care to avoid slipping and failling on the wet flooring.

Take 10 climb check for Anvil to get up into the Plaguehouse.

"We each have a vial of the holy water. If that is not enough, then we must count on being able to run."

Once in the hall, Cromwin will light a torch, partially protecting it from the rain using his sheild. It sizzles and spits, casting eerie shadows around the haunted building. Alright Cromwin. Deep breaths, your friends are here with you, they're counting on you. Lets do this. Torch lit, Cromwin will ride Anvil slowly down the hall. "We should look through the rest of the top floor before descending into the depths. And I think we should stay out of the room with the burning ghosts. I don't know how quickly they will return, and I have no desire to find out."

"Worry not, Cromwin, they really can't hurt you. Like I said, they are just the bad memories of this place, not actual restless spirits. I will grant that it does not make it any more pleasant to experience, but no lasting harm should come, should they return." Maurie smiles bravely. "That isn't to say, though, that there aren't other, less friendly ghosts of the variety our vermin problem seems to be."

We're not the ones who run here, we're not trapped and gain no advantage by moving away from our foes so long as they can pursue us. Grok's words are genuine, his voice slightly faster and louder than normal, but consistent in intensity. He is not swaggering.

Hmm...not like me then, Grok says, walking straight towards the bedroom and out of the torchlight. He puts his hand on the door, knowing what he will find and leaning into the door, almost ready to push his way through. Then he stops, only for a brief moment, perhaps a second, no more. Go on, no use waiting. They can't do anything once you're done with them. His breath becomes slightly heavier and faster, and he looks down at the wolf. He pats it on the head, and to the side, pushing it gently away.

Wild Empathy to make simple request: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Then he pushes the door open and strides into the darkness, looking for the memory of the dead.

Might seem a bit out of character to do something hasty, but Grok doesn't do so rationally when he's afraid, he more just goes forward. Hope nothing bad happens.

"That is all true, but still..." Cromwin looks unhappy, thinking back to the screaming ghosts. "I think the northern door was the only one we did not search on this level when we were here earlier. Lets see...wait, Grok!" Cromwin will ride behind Grok, following him through the door.

Is the bedroom the door to the north? Also, I put Cromwin+Anvil on the Plaguehouse Map slide. If Cromwin needs to ride Anvil into the 5 ft wide passage he can, but he and Anvil will be a -4 to hit and AC while squeezing there.
