Now that he is blinded by Exiel's spell, the porcupine man turns out to be quite easy to hit. Alden and Sue stab and pummel him with relative ease.

fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

The porcupine-man reels from Sue's first strike, but manages to remain in control of his movements. Meanwhile, as Sue draws back her fist, she realises that it has been bloodied from the porcupine-man's quills and that the poison from the quills is now coursing into her bloodstream as well!

Sue flicks the poison from the porcupine-man's quills off her fists as if they were water, though some of her blood is mingled with it.

42:
I'm still using your pre-rolled saves, and have assumed that you would use Exiel's battle cry buff to reroll the failed save. Your next 2 pre-rolled saves will be 10 and 22, less any penalty from your CON damage, and you still have 2 doses of poison in your bloodstream. I will need a few more pre-rolled saves from you to see whether you shake off the poison. Roll another 5 and we'll see what happens. Don't include the penalty from your CON damage in the rolls. I will add them as I roll any more damage you take.

For a moment it looks like 42 is about to succumb to yet more poison, but 42 is able to find hidden reserves of fortitude from Exiel's rousing battle cry. He sucks on the wound to draw out the poison, and spits out a mouthful of black-and-red.
The porcupine-man then shakes his head, trying to clear his eyes of the glittering particles from Exiel's spell.

Unfortunately for the little porcupine-man, the particles are well-lodged in his eyes, and his own quill-covered arms make it difficult to wipe them off.

Constantin, make a fort save. If you roll below 18, take 1d3 ⇒ 3 CON damage, and make another 5 fort saves. You can use Exiel's battle cry buff.

Exiel, how many battle cries do you have left?

Exiel sees that the porcupine-man is no longer standing, and rushes to 42's side, bolstering him with both magic and supernatural encouragement.

I will assume that 42 immediately uses the battle-cry to reroll his fort save of 10. The reroll gets him to 22+2-3=21, which passes, but the poison is not gone yet.

Does anyone want to do anything more to help 42 and maybe Constantin as they battle the poison in their veins?

Grand Lodge

Border of War map Reign of Winter map

Actually, casting bear's endurance is just the thing needed to keep you alive.

Round 6:
Exiel casts heroism on 42 and uses battle cry. 42 casts bear's endurance, rolls a 12-3+4=13 on his fort save, rerolls for 17-3+4=18. This still fails and he takes 1d3 ⇒ 2 CON damage.

Round 7:
Exiel uses battle cry again. 42 rolls 21+4-4=21 for his fort save, making his save.

Round 8:
42 rolls 11-4+4=11 for his fort save, uses battle cry to reroll for 21-4+4=21. This is his second consecutive save, and his body finally manages to deal with the poison.

If your fort save was 2 lower, or you didn't have those rerolls, you would have continued to take CON damage and quite possibly would not have made it.

With that crisis dealt with, you search the body of the porcupine-man carefully, and find in a pocket of his tattered robe a bone razor.

*************************************************************************** ********************************************************************

Before resting as previously-planned, you all take a moment to mourn the loss of Naala and consider 42's close brush with death. You were all chosen for this mission because you have proven yourself capable pathfinders, but Naala's corpse and 42's battered constitution serve as stark reminders that Artrosa is still a very dangerous place, even for you.

In your next post, you can each state what preparations and healing you did before resting .

You manage to rest without interruption, though the oppressive darkness, held back only by Constantin's magical ring, still fills you all with an ominous sense of dread. It does not help that this was also the site of where you, and Alden especially, lost an ally. You occasionally hear in the distance the sound of bellowing and loud thumping, and though you have no way to tell the time, you eventually reach a point where you feel sufficiently rested and ready to proceed.

Specifically, you have recovered your spells and your x/day abilities. You each recover 1hp/hit die, and 42 recovers 1 point of CON. I have removed all hp damage since Exiel has enough uses of lay on hands to deal with the remaining damage before resting. (It's weak, but there wasn't much more damage to heal.)

All your buffs have expired, unless you cast an extended hour/lvl or a day/lvl spell before resting. Alden, you still do not know what it was that happened to you when you inhaled from the dust cloud in the room with the climbing blowgun-users. Someone in your party, I think, was able to identify the hazard.

Speaking of hazards, DC20 knowledge religion:

You realise that Naala's corpse appears to be decomposing rather quickly. A little too quickly. This is sometimes a sign that a corpse has been affected by necromantic magic that is in the process of reanimating the corpse. A detect magic from any of your party members will confirm that there is necromantic magic affecting Naala's corpse.

Where will you go now? There are 2 passages (3 if you count the one you came from). One leads to the North-West, the other to the North-East. The passage you came from leads to the East.

Exiel spends the night wondering how to break the news to Alden. As the party packs their gear to continue on their exploration, he puts a hand on Alden's shoulder and gives a solemn sigh.

"Alden, I'm sorry for your loss, I really am. But Naala's corpse is decomposing too quickly. This is sometimes a sign that a corpse has been affected by necromantic magic that is in the process of reanimating the corpse. My spells have also confirmed that there is necromantic magic affecting Naala's corpse. We will need to do something about it, if only to prevent Naala's corpse from suffering further desecration by rising again as an undead abomination."

I have to run this as written, and there is no listed way to stop creatures killed by a Pukwudgie's poison from rising again.

But with that knowledge check, Exiel knows, and I assume will tell the group, that transformations of this sort usually happen in about 24 hours. You have taken about 10 hours to rest so you still have about 14 hours to achieve your objective in this place, request an extraction from Aram Zey, and be teleported back to Absalom. Once you're back in Absalom, you will have no trouble finding the right spells and resources to bring Naala back.

This means that you are now racing against the clock, and can potentially only rest one more time within this dungeon if you want to return to Absalom before Naala rises as an undead creature.

Whether by general consensus or simply not caring that Exiel has a path on a whim, you head down a path that appears to curve to your right as you travel down it. Eventually you reach a door set in the left wall of the passage, whilst the passage itself continues a short way further to a large cavern.

knowledge arcana: 1d20 + 9 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 3 = 28

"Thank you, Sue. I remember now. The rune is part of a binding spell used to create a hedged prison. Something from another plane has been bound to this place. It would be something capable of planar independent extra-dimensional travel if such a rune needed to be used...and such creatures are usually quite powerful. We should be cautious."

Exiel will cast shield and before entering the cavern.

It looks like our casters have prepared their buffs.

As you enter, you see that the massive cavern extends for more than hundred feet. Five web-wrapped cocoons, each almost 10 feet long, hang from the ceiling among the stalactites. A sixth cocoon lies on the floor near the middle of the cavern. At the far corner is quite possibly the largest single web you've ever seen by far. Another passage leads out towards the North-West again from this cavern.

Perception DC 15:
You can see part of the creature in the sixth cocoon. It appears to be the same as one of the ice-breathing demons you encountered early in the dungeon.

Perception DC 30:
Far above you amongst the stalactites, numerous black-beady eyes look down from the head of a massive, eight-legged arachnoid creature. This. Thing. Is. Huge.

Exiel looks around warily.

Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30

"I see them too, 42," he begins to say... but his eyes go wide as something far above him catches his eye. "By Torag... I don't think our problem is going to be more of those ice-demons... It's going to be what was big and strong enough to put them in those cocoons! HEADS UP!" (Battle cry)

He points towards the ceiling of the cavern as he hurriedly casts divine favour on himself. Lucien activates his ioun stone and quickly melds into Exiel's flesh. (Protection from evil on Exiel as well.)

Far above you amongst the stalactites, numerous black-beady eyes look down from the head of a massive, eight-legged arachnoid creature. This. Thing. Is. Huge.

I updated our buffs on the map, but I'm not sure I got everything. GM will need to put in whatever beastie is going to eat us...

Thanks! :)

And, that's going to take us into initiative.

Exiel's surprise round action is to cast divine favour, have Lucien trigger the ioun stone and do his battle cry. As he does this, the creature drops down from above right in front of the party. A spider the size of an elephant, this dark blue arachnid rears up on its six hind legs to raise its barbed and razor-edged front claws, and it looks hungrily at 42.

Exiel's initiative: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
42's initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Sue's initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Constantin's initiative: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17

The huge spider-creature lashes out at 42 before anyone has time to react (flat-footed), striking at him with a vicously fanged maw and two wickedly clawed feet.

bite: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (4) + 19 = 23

damage: 4d4 + 18 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 1) + 18 = 27

42's magical shield deflects the huge spider-creature's maw, but the creature's 2 claws reach over and dig deep into 42's armor. A horrible screeching fills the room as the spider-creature tugs and pulls at 42's armor, ripping it clean off his body! It then skitters backwards slightly and watches all of you intently. A strange voice chitters in each of your minds in a foreign tongue .

Abyssal:
"Aaahhh....more intruders....more FOOOOD....."

42, you have lost your armor bonus to AC. Also, you need to make a reflex save. Unfortunately, you chose to move up and were the most viable target in range since Exiel does not wear physical armor.

Knowledge planes to know what it is.

Exiel stares in amazement as the creature rips 42's armor off.

"Wow. That's one heck of a neat trick."

42:
Ah, I actually forgot about that. But after the first attack with its bite, it would have realised that you were wearing more than just cloth anyway, or that your 'clothes' were as functional as armor. And you were still a better target than Exiel since he had spotted the spider and so wasn't flat-footed.

Also, don't forget that you have Exiel's battle-cry buff since he was able to act in the surprise round. Decide whether you want to use it.

If you don't reroll:
As your armour is peeled off you, you attempt to wriggle out of it so that it does not get damaged in the process. You don't succeed. Your armour gains the 'broken' condition.

Whilst 42 casts his spell, the spider-creature eyes him as if he were a shelled crab, and attempts to take a quick bite!

attack: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (8) + 19 = 27
damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 4) + 9 = 16

Without his armour, the spider-creature easily takes a bite out of 42, potentially disrupting his spell.
Make a concentration check (DC29) and 5 fort saves. You can use your battle-cry reroll for this instead.

Neither Exiel nor 42 know what this creature is. I'll resolve the rest of the actions after Sue posts and 42 makes his saving throws and concentration check.
