GM Aneirin's Second Darkness Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master Aneirin Rhodri

Strange portents loom over the city of Riddleport, and only the heroes can figure out what new menace has arisen in Varisia's freewheeling pirate cove of Riddleport.

1 to 50 of 139 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

A strange light in the sky holds a danger unknown for ten thousand years! Deep beneath Golarion's surface, the greatest shame of the elves is stirring once more. Seething with hatred, the drow have come up with a plan to wipe out their ancient enemies and bring a second Age of Darkness. And this time, there's only the heroes to stop them...

I'm starting up a play-by-post of Second Darkness, the third AP from Paizo. Deadline for submission will be October 5, game starting a day or two afterwards. Character generation rules are as follow:
- 20 point buy, no stat above 17 or below 9 before racial modifiers.
- Core and races up to 15RP allowed.
- All classes allowed (except Antipaladin, Ninja and Samurai), including the new ACG ones. Gun-users will be at a disadvantage though, so heads up.
- 2 Traits max, one of which must be from the Second Darkness Player's Guide. Not feats or drawbacks allowed for more traits.
- LG, NG, CG, LN, N, and CN allowed.
- 150 GP to start with.
- HP is max at first level, and then average +1 in all subsequent levels.
- As a bonus, all characters start with one bonus racial feat (they must still qualify for the feat).
- 3rd Party Content not allowed.
- A backstory is required.
Good luck to all!

I'm in!

dotting for interest, will work on a concept.

dot... sounds interesting!

Dotting...thinking something arcane-y, like a sorcerer or witch.

Dropping in & dotting up.

Tentative dot, thinking maybe a Hunter with the Divine Hunter archetype.

Dot. I've got an aasimar bloodrager i'd like to try.

The more the merrier. Remember, October 5 is the cut off date!

dotting will think of an excellent write up.

I'd definitely like to play this, so I'll have to think about my character. Proooobably a caster, I suppose, though I'll probably take a day or two to decide on which type and really hammer out an idea. ^^

Oh, sorry, just realized, no Drow players. Should have had that listed in the character generation page. Doesn't fit the AP at all, so if you were wanting to, sorry.

Will be attempting an alternate Elizabeth Ardoc. Wayward daughter of the Ardoc family who came to Riddleport to escape her past.

Description:Elizabeth is a pale skinned woman who wears her blonde hair in a page-boy cut and has a liking to small blue hats that clash with her bland

scribe outfit that was provided by the cyphermages. When out in town, she wears common shirts and pants.
Personality: Elizabeth is bitter about her effective exile from Kaer Maga and how she was never able to achieve her dream of constructing golems for her

family. She does see her time in Riddleport as a chance to perhaps achieve a different sort of sucess. She only needs to figure out what.
History: Elizabeth was born in Kaer Maga as a member of the Ardoc family who are both golem crafters and a crimminal group. Being a woman ment that Elizabeth was not allowed to pursue the family craft of golem making was was furious at being denied this oppurtunity and being associated with a gang of thugs.

Elizabeth did manage to learn some scraps of knowledge but without formal training, would never be able to craft golems and so on her 18th birthday, stole some funds and left Kaer Maga forever, eventually ending up in Riddleport.
Relationship to Riddleport: Elizabeth has managed to secure a job as a scribe at the Cyphermage lodge as both a source of funds and a way of being close to her love of arcane knowledge. She is always on the look for new oppurtunities to advance herself and if one presents itself, will jump at the chance.

Dotting for interest. Maybe a Cleric or Oracle....

Dotting for interest. Maybe a Druid (Feral Shifter) or Ranger (Divine Tracker).

dotting, I've been considering running this one, myself

Quite a few dots, one actual writeup!

Keep them coming!

----------
Background
----------
When Liara was born her parents thought she’d be a normal little girl. She looked normal, though her eyes were very odd. One eye was an icey blue (Left eye) and the other was a dark brown (right eye). Of course they thought it was weird, who wouldn’t? Though as she started to age they found that she was growing slower, aging slower, and when she turned 3 or 4 years old there was a bump that started to form on her head. They were alarmed of course, wondering what was going on with their daughter. Her hair went from its toe-head blonde to changing slowly from blonde to brunette. Nothing weird there, it happens. Her skin is a soft pearly white though.

They were scraping their minds though, trying to figure out exactly why she wasn’t growing normally, why she wasn’t ‘normal’. They were too poor though to actually take her somewhere to figure this out, and so they hid her away, not wanting people to comment about how odd this child was. A the age of 20, she was still very much looking like a child, though her bump had turned into a long golden horn, much like that of a unicorn’s horn.

Her parents ran across someone, an elf specifically who figured out what she was, explaining to her parents about her. They soaked this information in, and the girl had taken a liking to this particular elf, feeling like she could trust him. It was then that he revealed that he was a hunter and told of stories of his adventures. The girl asked him if she could train under him, and the man, who was a collector of sorts decided to take her under his wing.

He taught her as much as he could, helping her with her issues, though he knew nearly nothing about her problems of being different. When she reached the age of 59, which was ‘unusual’ for humans, but not unusual for Aasimar she headed out, maybe a bit too early but she felt like she could tackle things, come on, she’s a ‘teenager’ at this point.
The girl headed out, to figure things out on her own, and eventually she found her way, her own path so to speak.
At the age of 64 she arrived in, Riddleport and, though she wasn’t too fond of sticking in the city, she did make herself a nice home outside the city, having collected gear through her travels. When the blot arrived over the town, she found it scary, found it intriguing to some degree and a slow obsession of figuring out where it came from ran through her, thus her research into this blot began. It was horrifying to her, and she came up with nothing, constantly nothing on where it came from. Just staring up at it all day, writing down notes, writing down how it never moved, how people went from being scared of it to not caring about it, thinking it was just part of the damned city’s attraction. She began to think these people fools.

This is Ariarh Kane's submission. The information (stats and so forth) is on her profile. I will continue to add flavour and fluff, but will finalise Caida before close of recruitment. If any alterations or corrections need to be made, please advise and I will change accordingly. Thank you for the consideration.

interested, but what do you mean by " all characters start with one bonus racial feat (they must still qualify for the feat)"

Elf should get a Elfic feat, half orc an half orc Feat, and so on?

I'm thinking perhaps it's like gnomes could get Casual Illusionist or one of the other gnome feats or catfolk could get the Black Cat racial feat, provided they meet the qualifications (for example it looks like several of the gnome racial feats require certain racial traits before they can be chosen).

This character is currently 3rd level but I would adjust him back to first if he is chosen.

All right, I've decided to adapt this character. ^^ Short Version: Aasimar Oracle, focusing on enabling other characters and manipulating the battlefield to the party's advantage.

Fluff:
Kariel was a rare Aasimar birth - a child directly descended from an ancestor in the celestial realms, and gifted with a connection to the gods that few mortals could ever match. Her heritage was immediately obvious; as if the full head of pink hair wasn't enough, there were two tiny wings sticking out of her back. Such births have usually been seen as good fortune for entire nations or even entire worlds, and Kariel's parents hoped that her presence was the start of the gods favoring the world and allowing magic through once more. Gathering what money they had, her parents sent a messenger off to the closest major temple (about a week away) in the hope of spreading the good news and giving their child to the church. They were entirely correct about what the church would do... but the messenger talked a little too freely.

Three days before the delegation from the church arrived, Kariel's house was attacked and her parents were killed. The culprits were a group of cultists who thought that her birth could be twisted for their own ends, and their intent was to pervert the baby's essence and consecrate her to their dark master. What none of them realized was that a certain Empyreal Lord already had his eyes set on the child, and her curse had begun to go wild along the way. Falling trees, distracting noises... it was hitting hard just then, and the commotion was enough to get the attention of someone else, who just happened to have caught a glimpse of the cultists as they fled towards their base.

Once they'd reached it, however, Kariel was not exactly safe. The cultists still didn't realize that a divine being had already marked her, and went about their business with merciless precision. Her still-tiny left wing and right arm were chopped off and burned as an offering, starting the long ritual that would twist the child into an abomination. The whole event probably would have succeeded if the base hadn't been raided... by a whole group of bandits. Magic was already a very valuable commodity, and the one who'd seen the cultists go past was part of a group that hunted for children to sell to the empire. The cultists possesses more fanaticism than actual power or ability, and the experienced killers had very little difficulty eliminating them. Kariel was rescued before the ritual was complete and ultimately managed to avoid the planned desecration, but most of the problems were only just beginning...

The bandits had no magical healer of their own, but several members had some basic experience with normal healing techniques, and they managed to stop the bleeding from her severed limbs. Thus began a surprisingly long chain of sales where Kariel was shipped all over the place and generally treated like a commodity instead of a person. The fact that she grew slowly (as was normal for her kind) made it all the easier for them.

After decades of being sold all over the place, those involved with her particular circumstances were used to her good behavior - and utterly failed to realize what was going on inside of her mind. While not exactly a genius, Kariel was far from stupid, and had spent ages observing her surroundings, observing others, and generally figuring things out. It didn't hurt that she'd actually been sold outside of the human-dominated lands for awhile, and realized that things could be different. The feelings grew and grew until, at last, she couldn't take it anymore.

She was sick and tired of being treated like an object. She had only one arm, which meant she often needed help for basic tasks (or at least had to do them very slowly), her one wing seriously unbalanced her, and not once had any of those involved with her perpetual enslavement seemed to consider her at all worthwhile as a person. She had been patient for literally decades, following along obediently and trying her best to be good, and all it had brought her was misery. She was about to start cursing the gods and begging them to simply finish her off when one of the spirits that was haunting her just happened to knock a small, silver disc off of a shelf in her current confinement chamber. Morbidly curious, Kariel moved over to pick it up... and for the first time in her life felt a strong connection to the gods. More specifically, she realized, it was a connection to Korada, the Empyreal Lord of forgiveness and peace.

Through this brush with the divine, Kariel realized that all the pain and suffering she'd gone through over the decades still wasn't enough to demand vengeance. If she truly wanted to be good, then she had to set aside such urges and forgive them. They did not deserve it, but they would receive it anyway. Crying, Kariel fell to her knees and clutched the divine focus with her one arm, begging for the Empyreal Lord's help in forgiving the wrongs done to her.

Korada, who had been watching over her the whole time, gave it. Kariel had been utterly sincere about wanting to be better than she had been, and the favor of the celestial being was soon manifested as her missing arm and wing were restored. Not to the way they should have been, but with replacements that were clearly artificial yet somehow behaved exactly like flesh would have, right down to their weight and dexterity. This was Kariel's reminder from her deity, an everlasting mark to help her remember what forgiveness was about.

It was just after the replacement limbs had appeared that the door to her room burst open, and her latest owner waddled into the room, intending to put her divine essence to good use. He'd been expecting a broken, obedient servant. What he saw instead was a girl newly restored, surrounded by a nimbus of celestial radiance. The guards were terrified, but her owner was even more so, falling backwards and trying desperately to pedal away from her as she slowly walked towards him. When he hit a wall and could retreat no further, he simply lay there, slack-jawed as Kariel approached.

She looked at him for a moment, then gently knelt down and placed a hand on his shoulder, speaking a few soothing words. Kariel stood up a moment later and made her way to the entrance of the estate. Seeing the changes in her, nobody had the nerve to try and stop her. She was, at last, free from her long captivity... and had set aside the grudges. The past was awful, but it no longer mattered. She had a future to look forward to, and that was precisely what she was going to do.

The first people to see her after her escape were, somewhat understandably, a bit slack-jawed when she simply walked up to their cart and asked if they knew how to get to a city. Kariel had always possessed a lot of natural charm, but with Korada's acceptance had come her powers in full, and she now had far more magic to choose from. She had truly become an Oracle, and her adventure was only just getting started.

Now, Kariel has come to Riddleport to research a strange blot in the sky, determine how much of a threat it might be, and spread the teachings of Korada. More than anything else, she hopes to offer shelter and comfort to those who are tired of their wicked ways and have begun to seek redemption. Of course, it's not always easy being an attractive woman in a city like this one... but a surprising amount of misfortune seems to strike those who stand against her, and her obvious affiliation with the gods has encouraged hoodlums to keep their distance lest they bring down significantly more divine wrath upon themselves.

This is the submission for shrodingerscat. The stats and background are in my profile. If you have any additional ideas for flavor or notice something off, please let me know.

This is my submission. Basic Human fighter. Very basic. Point being trying to make something out of him via Rp...

All infos are into the profile.

Just need to check for the free racial Feat...

I'm thinking melee ranger, but before I can select my archtype is it okay to ask one question? How much underground fighting will we do? Feel free to answer in spoilers.

Sarabian here, with my submission of Laramir, a human sorcerer. I've got a basic background sketched out in my brain, I just need to get it down on paper. Electrons. Whichever.

Melee
- Tierney Quade (Tiefling Magus [Kensai])
- Sheoll Netenebri (Aasimar Bloodrager [rageshaper])
- Gabsen (Human Fighter)
Range
- Liara "Lee" Woodrunner (Aasimar Hunter [primal companion]) (Maybe?)
Arcane
- Laramir Kelthestral (Human Sorcerer [starsoul])
Divine
- Caida Nez (Human Druid [feral shifter])
- Kariel (Aasimar Oracle [dual cursed])
Skill
- Elizabeth Ardoc (Human Rogue)

Nice mix of characters so far! Melee oriented characters take the lead for now.

Also, yes, everyone get a free racial feat at level 1. I do this for my games to make your race a bit more of a choice than just a few bonuses to stats and skills, it helps define your character more! So if you do not have your free racial feat, go ahead and pick it (must still qualify for it though!).

Plan on making a carefree bardic archeologist. He will be a aasimar with angelic blood.

I plan on going the weapon finesse route.

Somehow I didn't notice that one trait was supposed to be from the player's guide. I have updated to reflect that.

Tomorrow I will do a full review of all submitted characters to see if they meet all my prerequisites. I will then do so every day until October 5.

Once more, best of luck to all!

I'm adding this feat for my character, for finalization if chosen.

Spoiler:

Weapons Focus for the Great Club

I actually had to twist around my abilities to qualify for a racial feat. XD Most Aasimar stuff is a bit higher in level - though I suppose there's always the option of taking a bonus feat later in the game instead of right at the start, or perhaps retraining it at a later point.

Liberty's Edge

Hey Aneirin, couple of quick questions;

How are you planning on handling combat, will it be description based or will you use maps? Also, what are your expectations on frequency of posting?

OK, I've updated Laramir's sheet with her lovely human feat, she should be good to go as soon as I drop a background in.

do you require the special feat if we want to be a tiefling variant? although you do give us an extra feat, I could use that.

@JamZilla: Posting 1/day minimum is fine, though I would appreciate more during fights. We all have lives, I understand this. If a fight comes up, I'll be using google docs to throw up maps and characters, easily workable and such.

@DoubleGold: Not needed. But yes, you do have your bonus racial feat and such.

Dotting for interest, had a few concepts I wanted to play around with... maybe a Swashbuckler (Mouser), an Investigator (Empiricist), or Magus (Hexcrafter)

Dotting for interest. Will whip up something when I'm back from my trip this Thurs 10/2.

Greetings companions! Kostin Bolmosa here applying for a place in this adventure!

Well though he was originally made for a Rise of the Runelords I think he is a great character for Second Darkness, I think I changed everything necessary but if there's anything wrong do tell me.

Melee
- Tierney Quade (Tiefling Magus [Kensai])(*)
- Sheoll Netenebri (Aasimar Bloodrager [rageshaper])*
- Gabsen (Human Fighter)*
- Kostin Bolmosa (Half-elf Swashbuckler)*
Range
- Liara "Lee" Woodrunner (Aasimar Hunter [primal companion])*
Arcane
- Laramir Kelthestral (Human Sorcerer [starsoul])*
Divine
- Caida Hawk (Human Druid [feral shifter])*
- Kariel (Aasimar Oracle [dual cursed])*
Skill
- Elizabeth Ardoc (Human Rogue)*

So far, everyone checks out. I checked a little earlier than anticipated but yeah, everyone checks out for the most part. Only concern is Tierney Quade being leveled up already, but I sort of backwards deduced how they were built.

Kariel, that image is both awesome and it would be intriguing to see how people react to such a... unique Aasimar in their midst. And wow! Quite a few Aasimar!

Laramir, just need a backstory from you, but crunch wise you're fine.

And once more, best of luck to all!

GM Aneirin, I changed Caida's family name to 'Hawk'.

Caida Hawk wrote:

And edited!

It is quite nice, isn't it? ^^ Mechanically, there are no differences - not unless I can work something out at later levels to represent it, anyway - but it definitely helps inspire me on the characterization side of things. XD

Throwing my hat in the ring. Backstory will be forthcoming, rest assured.

I adjusted Tierney back to first level.

Is it allowed to use the variant age-advancing rules listed here?

Thanks!

I assume you want to play someone above their 'prime', taking the negatives to physical and bonuses to mental stats yes?
