Hello, everyone! I'm relatively new to the boards here, but I was intrigued by the large online campaigns community I stumbled across accidentally.

I've been poking through some of the campaigns, and I'm itching to give Play-by-Post a shot.

I know, based on my brief overview of the campaigns hosted here, that there are countless Rise games in progress, but as that's the AP I'm planning to run in real life, it seems like the best option.

SO, with that useless intro, let us commence recruitment for yet another Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition play-by-post adventure!

Character Creation
1st Level Characters
20-point Buy
Non-Evil Alignments
Core and Featured (from the Advanced Race Guide) Races Only - No goblins
Any Paizo-created class or archetype is fine (Including the new(ish) Advanced Classes)
Max HP at level 1
Average gold for your class
2 Traits - One must be from the campaign guide
You may craft gear if you have ranks in the relevant crafting skill
You may (you're not required) take a drawback for an extra trait

Let me know if I left out anything obvious.

Applications
Please answer the four questions below to apply:

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?
2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?
3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.
4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?

I plan on keeping recruitment open until this weekend. I look forward to the applications - let me know if you have any questions!

Grand Lodge

Hi there, super keen to sign up for a play by post game.

Did you want to do applications by PM or in the posts?

I'd like to join this Rise of the Runelords campaign. This is alias, I'd like to play.

Ulrich is very interesting character. He is knowledgeable and knows something about history and religion.
1) He can contribute being skilled in personal combat, but prefers to do area attacks for enemy.
2) He is determined to dig into old history of Thassilon and Azlanti empires. His character is more about order, so he is one, who is willing to lead a team to success and carefully plan advancement with limited resources he has at hand.
3) He comes from Korvosan family, but was unsuccessful in arcane studies, learned couple of basic tricks, but was dismissed from Academae, due to lack of progress. Worked as scribe and translator, found some ancient works. Discovered himself as worshiper of Lissala and was granted by some minor powers. Moved to Kaer Maga to find other worshipers of forgotten deity, but found that original idea of cult is lost, and most of worshipers view her as goddess of cruel knowledge. Willing to restore Lissala's neutral part, he is travelling to Sandpoint and later to Magnimar. His short term plans: recon an old lighthouse in Sandpoint and then move to Magnimar to find Pathfinder Society representatives.
4) Players must be devoted to idea to walk through. Plot should be their solution to any background problem they have. Characters are not made in stone, they need to adjust.
I would like guys to allow character swapping, if someone leaving... Usually, my PbP went nuts because of long preparation for actual action. To shorten that, I usually allow my players to communicate over Skype/Discussion/OOC to keep their interest and good tactical advises on table. This way, I still can move it forward with them doing all mechanical stuff, but interaction and social are still up to player itself.

@Zedorland - In the posts, please.

The Exchange

I would like to submit a character I just lost out on a Shattered Star game with. Her name is Amy Unwin and she's a Half-Elf Rogue. I'll have to tweak her backstory a bit to fit with this game, but basically she's a Pathfinder Society member from Magnimar and I would probably just say that she's in town to see the festival because she remembers reading about the murders.

1 & 2. She's a rogue so sneak attacks and critical hits--she also could double as a back up ranged attacker. She's good at trap finding and she's very skill heavy. She's also a scholar. She could read ancient Thassalonian, Draconic and some other languages. She also has a good grasp on ancient history and culture (she had a +9 History check).

3. Backstory: Background: In the same way that someone is destined to be a Paladin or might feel called to the vocation of Cleric, Amy is a born scholar. Being raised under the crumbling ruins of the Thassilonian empire caused her to develop an early curiosity for the history of Golarion.

Fiona, her mother, runs a bookstore in Magnimar’s Shore District. Books on the legacy of Thassilonian culture were her toys and best friends. Most of her childhood was spent in her room curled up in the company of a dusty old tome or scroll. Even before she knew the words, Amy would stare at them for hours.

Amy grew up as the weird hermit girl. When her mother forced her to go outside and play the only kind of “play” she could manage was exploring the streets for relics (that mostly turned out to be old garbage). The other children became as annoyed with her “relic” hunts as she became with their dismissive attitude about the wonders of the history around them.

Her father, Aeson the Elf, is a scholar in the Pathfinder society—he met her mother when hunting for an old text that he heard she had come by—he taught Amy the Thassilonian language from a young age, along with Elven and Draconic. She joined the Pathfinder Society, in part, to be closer to her father, but also because it was the only thing that would make good use of her skills.

Amy is the record keeper for the Pathfinder lodge in Magnimar, but she was sent out on an assignment for the Shallowtail Festival in Sand Point, mostly because she kept annoyingly talking about the event and the fire that burned the original church down (quoting facts and reciting other things she had read).

She was sent on a what should have been a distraction assignment to get her out of the office.

4. In my experience it takes a mix of a good DM and the right mix of characters and players to keep any game alive. PbP or otherwise. It also really helps if you encourage the players to get to know each other (experience: I ran a PbP game on another forum for two and a half years).

I'll get her sheet ready because she was built on a lower point buy and post a link.

Happy to see another ROTRL campaign. This is Cade he is a cleric of Desna.

In combat he is a healer though not exclusively, secondary melee and clerics have a pretty wide range of spells to fill gaps as needed.

Out of combat Cade is widely traveled (Varisia). Most of his formal training is in his faith so he has a religious bent to his skill set. He is always up for a good story, a lover of art and willing to give wise council filter through a pretty free wheeling Desnan perspective, "Chase your dreams, do no harm and resist evil." As he levels up I could see him picking up an instrument, and some additional knowledge skills.

Cade's brief history is in this profile. He is very much in the vein of wandering heroic meddlers. Jules from Pulp Fiction described this character concept best, "You know like walk the earth. Like Caine on Kung-fu, meet people get involved in their lives and have adventures." His motives are generally driven by wanderlust, and fighting the good fight if needs be.

Keeping a PbP alive is really about openness. People wander off if things are inactive. I have had more than one PbP end because life came up and after a few days the GM or others were reluctant to check in because the feel like they dropped the ball so they either never check back in or do after there has been a severe momentum loss. If they were upfront about what is at stake. New players or a new GM could get plugged in while excitement was still high. Seeing not a lot of activity with no news or warning is discouraging. With news or warning its easily adjusted.

Characters that can grow and change through the adventure and be shaped by it in my opinion do better in PBP than characters that are fully established.

Been trying to get this guy here into a game that doesn't die. There's just a few changes I need to make to him, but this is who I'd like to submit. So, to your questions!

1) Satinder can contribute melee with two weapon combat. He can back up with range as well.

2) Out of combat, Satinder can contribute a way with words. His background gives him a view of good and peace, so if there's anything that could end up leading to combat, he would do what he could to prevent combat.

3) Satinder's backstory is on his page. The tldr version is this however: He's a bastard child of an exiled noblewoman, who was taken in by the church, however took in the path of his older brother and sister. He's young, naive, and looking to bring whatever good he can to this world.

4) It really comes down to player interest to keeping a pbp game alive and going. Every time I've tried to play this with this character, they've all died for the same reason. The GM stopped posting. And when the GM stops posting, or keeps saying "I'll post, I'll post, I'll post" without a single post in the entire two weeks they say they'll post, then player interest gets lost quickly. As long as you can keep up with all the players and stay interactive (without trying to rail road everything), then you won't have any issue with the game dying.

Any to everyone else, good luck! Let's make this a fun application center to read!

Submitting Hardish Swift as a candidate.

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?
- Hardish will be able to contribute by using his acrobatics skills to maneuver into position and to quickly overtake specific enemies. He will also be a quality scout and may be able to end certain combats before they start with a well placed arrow.
2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?
- Hardish offers a perceptive eye and an agile hand. He is able to detect and avoid many man-made dangers that his allies would not. He can also offer up his skills as a thief to make his way into certain target locations.
3. What is your character's origin story?
-Hardish was raised by the Wind clan, and like the Wind, he enjoys being always on the move and making unseen changes to the world around him. He is not malevolent, but he does consider his own personal success before how his actions affect others. He has a chip on his shoulder due to mistreatment for his half-elf heritage, so he is slow to trust, but he has an undying loyalty once he makes friends.
4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?
-I suggest that a regular posting schedule would help keep things moving (ex: GM posts Sunday and Thursday, all players must post at least once in between)
-I also greatly enjoy a gradual level up process rather than all at once. (ex: after a certain point, everyone gets their BAB and Saves increased to the next level, then class features, then feats and skills in intervals) This keeps the characters evolving slightly more realistically and it prevents the level up from seeming like a chore. (my opinion)

Hm. Interested in this. Thinking a zen archer monk, switch hitter...

Will see what I can put together this week.

Updated the sheet. Let me know if anything needs to change.

full disclosure:
i spend too much time on these boards and am confident that i can keep up with more than one campaign at the same time, but i'm being considered for 2 other games and in the unlikely event that i'm selected for both of them (before you make your selections) i'd probably have to withdraw my application (if, somehow, you completed your selections before one of them that would take precedence in my book).

i don't have an alias made, but i'd be interested in signing on as Baldric Moore, a human fighter [lore warden/martial master] from Magnimar.

to answer your questions:
1) hit things hard, combat maneuvers
2) some knowledges, perception and/or sense motive (depending on traits), good roleplaying ;)
3) Baldric is from a somewhat well off merchant family in Magnimar. He trained in a Martial Academy there and his father hopes that he will secure a stable well-paying position in the personal guard of one of the nobles. Baldric himself seems less anxious to secure a longterm position and has headed off to the Shallowtail Festival in search of a good time and some quick coin. (he'd be more of the reluctant hero, though he'll have trouble resisting getting involved in dangerous situations).
4) require other contact info from players, like an email address or something (and provide yours in return)- that way if someone (including the GM) goes AWOL there is another way to reach out to them and encourage them to get back into the swing of things

So I was absent for a while, and need some warmup to get back into this. I have a Campaign of my own I need to get back up to speed, but some practice will help.

So, for your questions, I have a few potential characters whom can fit your game's criteria: An Oracle of Metal, an Oracle of Bones, an Oracle of Life, a Summoner, or a Wizard. What they contribute varies accordingly. Given what others have showcased, I'll choose my Summoner if you don't mind.

If the Summoner is not an option (as some GMs dislike them), then the Wizard will be my second choice. If the Wizard's age is an issue (as she is 14, but will turn 15 in three weeks in-game time), then I'll choose the Oracle of Bones. If Undead and a Deaf / Mute scare you, then I'll choose the Oracle of Life. If scaredy-cat shy burn-scarred ladies abhor you, then lastly I'll go with the Oracle of Metal (whom is a secondary Fighter / Tank).

Anyways, I've jabbered enough, sorry. On to the Summoner.

1. My Summoner character is Norme. He is primarily Combat Support, although his support comes from battlefield control and his Eidolon's presence. When not locking enemies down in combat, he spends time buffing his allies or his Eidolon. However, his Eidolon will not be strictly combat oriented, but will instead be a "combat buddy" for flanks and tanks (catchy, eh?), or, Combat Support on the Tank / Fighter side in Layman's terms.

2. Norme has a height complex (as he is short for his age), and dresses like a Wizard (which he wishes he was in secret). As a result, he can bluff being a child Wizard, even if he's already 18. Aside from good Bluff and Diplomacy checks, he can pull of Disguises very well too. He possesses decent Knowledge checks, but lacks performance skills; his comedy is extremely dry and poor, and rarely funny when it counts.

His Eidolon, Aspara, is a Humanoid Eidolon whose general appearance is that of a beautiful woman who could put a dedicated supermodel to shame with her looks and allure. Currently, his Eidolon has assumed a plant-based form (providing Norme's given name for her), meaning she has green skin and plant-like features atop her attractive Humanoid base form. She primarily aids Norme in social situations by providing eyecandy and sex appeal (or, if disguised in her Wizard outfit that is similar to his, posing as his beloved wife or fiancee / platonic life companion). However, his Eidolon is also naive to a fault, and often gets the two in trouble if she isn't properly instructed on what to do.

3. Norme was raised in a family of Wizards, but never had the magical prowess anyone else had. That he didn't grow particularly tall particularly fast also hurt his standings, and a combination of these things resulted in his expelling from a prestigious academy for magic in his homeland. It was at that time he left his home to travel the world and regain his name and standing (since he was a disgrace to his family).

It was during these travels that he unwittingly stumbled into a slave auction (which he thought was a "rave auction" due to some accent and pronunciation troubles on the side of the event organizer). So he purchased and rescued the unfettered Eidolon (for her old master was long since perished, and seeing her driven into insanity and being broken by a cruel man as being, well, cruel) that soon became Aspara. Taking her under his wing, he physically wrestled her and placed a mark on her head (and his) by literally headbutting her during the tussle. The mark appears as a golden leaf on both of them. Norme hides his under his hair, and hides Aspara's by having her wear a circlet / headband hybrid accessory.

Having earned her respect, the two became good traveling partners. He never bothered to change her base form, respecting the choices of her previous master, and the two eventually made their way to Varisia, eager to see what adventures the land may hold for them now.

4. Posting at the very least once a week, with a hard focus on interactions with the NPCs and other Party Members, so as to encourage fun and fair play, and explore situations that may arise to keep things interesting. For example, Norme's personality means he is always looking for things he can teach Aspara, so he'd also have a good reason to encourage the others to stay vigilant and active, no matter where they are. If the party is remaining remaining vigilant, then the players are active and paying attention, no?

If Norme will not work, cctodd, let me know, and I can bring forth one of the others. Thanks for giving me any feedback!

-BigBenClockTower

Skald here.

Dotting, I will finish up profile hopefully tomorrow.

Scarab Sages

Posting for interest, Have tried to get into this for so long, checking old built charectors and seeing who fits the best,

1. Narciso is built to be a battle mage, while he may lack the spellcasting abilities of a Sorcerer he will make up for it as the party levels up. Once level 8 hits Narciso will truly come into his "realm", as an airborn battle mage slinging arcane death down from on high high.
2. Narciso has magic, a few knowledges and can act as a potent "stick" to get npcs moving.
3. Narciso was born in the tenth hell of poverty, he did not become a summoner because he loved the arcane: He became a summoner purely for power. Narciso motivations are wealth, fame and power, he lived in the hell of poverty once never again.
4. This AP is like tofu, you have to add your own flavor as a GM. I personally suggest taking on some "kingmaker" aspects with Sandpoint or with that fortress mentioned in the 3rd part of this AP. KM campaigns even if they are on a smaller scale (more like town or fortressmaker) tend to have extraordinarily loyal players.

So do you like my character GM?

If Narciso ends up being chosen, and he is a Summoner, I'll switch to my Wizard straight up. Let me know, cctodd. I'm super flexible here as far as what I can play. I'll fill for the party.

This looks like a great chance to get back into some Pathfinder gaming!
I'll be applying with Travok Shortstrider, a dwarf cleric of Torgan. If two clerics are too much for the party, I do not mind changing the class of Torgan to Ranger or Barbarian or something a bit more outdoorsy to fit the party.

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?
Travok will bring Dwarven resilience and ferocity a long with his god-given ability to cast spells that he can support his allies with. He is not afraid to wade into the deep end of a battle but prefers to provide guidance and support.

2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?
A quick wit, Dwarven wisdom, Dwarven cooking, decades of accumulated knowledge in a variety of useful fields and languages, and did I mention Dwarven wisdom?

3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.
Travok comes from Janderhoff where he is a young member of the Shortstrider Clan. So called because they are a clan of Dwarves who are dedicated to protecting the trade that goes in and out of Janderhoff and because of this causes them to travel quite a bit, long distances for dwarves but short distances for anyone else. He is a dedicated member of the priesthood of Torgan, the Dwarven creator god and uses his skills to heal and provide historical commentary for his companions.

He loves to travel and seeks out settlements of all kinds to learn their history and how they worship. He has spent decades learning the history of Varisia and is now trying to experience it for himself. He is adventurous and ambitious. He has hopes to one day become the patriarch of the Shortstrider clan and lead them out of Janderhoff to found a Dwarven settlement modeled on the bustling metropolises found outside the mountains.

4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?
It's my experience that the initial momentum of a PbP can quickly disappear if posting rates drop below once or twice every two to three days. If a game can't keep up at least 1 post every two to three days it will quickly die. To me the ideal is 1 post a day but I agree with others who have said that the very minimum should be 1 post a week. I would suggest that the DM can take simple actions for a character if the player has not posted within 24 hours. Examples would be, guiding a character through a doorway, sitting down at a table to eat, joining a group walking towards something.

Keeping as much of the game outside as possible is also a good idea. Sometimes you simply have to go inside, but once the game goes inside you often get bound down by a lot of:
Day 1. You see a door.
Day 2. We open the door.
Day 3. Two more doors.
Day 5. We stack up tactically in front of door number 1.
Day 7. Another character suggests listening at the door before opening it.

Hey everyone! Glad to see there's already some initial interest from some interesting characters.

Here's the list I have so far:
Ulrich - Race Class
Amy Unwin - Half-Elf Rogue
Cade - Race Cleric
Satinder - Aasimar Ranger
Hardish Swift - Half-Elf Rogue
Baldric - Race Class
Norme - Human Summoner
Vikh the Bloodboiler - Human Skald
Narciso - Half-Elf Summoner
Travok Shortstrider - Dwarven Cleric

If I don't have your race or class, please let me know what you have in mind.

@BigBenClockTower - I don't have much feeling either way for summoners as I've never actually played with one. I'm fine with it, though.

@Everyone - Thanks for the tips - there's some good stuff here. Is asking for one post a day too much to ask of people (allowing for extenuating circumstances, of course)?

I have no issue posting once a day. Though there are some days I don't get the chance cause I'm out of my house for almost 12 hours everyday lol, but I'm a DM here as well, so I do my best to post at least once, and if possible, twice a day. Weekends honestly work the best for me.

@Norme: I'm honestly curious about your wizard lol. I honestly don't see many characters that aren't part of some anime based game that are that young.

@cctodd: Ulrich Howlwind is LN Human Cleric.

I'm OK with 1/day and I rarely pause for longer than 10 hours, except weekends. I am available via Skype, so if there is a delay because of my action, I can script some of them via short message.

User Threeshades here, with my character. It's still WIP.

I haven't had time to look at the campaign guide yet, so consider this a rough version. I will choose traits, feats and gear when i have done that. I will also put a statblock into the profile once the aforementioned steps are done.

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?

Marlow singles out enemies, preferably tough ones, and takes them down in melee. He's mobile and can get into position easily.

2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?

He has several useful skills for almost every situation. Stealth, acrobatics, climb, perception and survival make him a good explorer and scout, sense motive, knowledge local, intimidate, disguise and bluff give him an edge in social interaction, he can also track, being a slayer.

3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.

Marlow Conrad is a man who has seen much death in his life. He came to Varisia as a child, his family, traders from Andoran, slaughtered by bandits, Marlow spent much of his childhood surviving on the streets of Korvosa as part of various gangs of street urchins. Not rarely used by other criminals to do some dirty work and often getting into terrible trouble with such individuals, Marlow had to witness several of his friends being murdered by the more ruthless ones.

In his adolescence Marlow was forcibly recruited by a ranger working from Sandpoint, who had come to Korvosa for business, after being caught by the same in the act of stabbing one of the criminals who murdered one of his friends to death in a backstreet.

Marlow was brought to Sandpoint and received training in the untamed wild surrounding the city. Although he didn’t show quite the same bond with nature that other rangers had, Marlow did have a certain lethal talent and his experiences in the street made him a useful asset both in the wild and with other people.

He eventually quit service with the ranger’s to pursue his own goals, and try on adventuring and mercenary work to eke out a better living.

Marlow often has trouble telling right from wrong and his violent behavior makes him unpredictable at times, he has an utterly pragmatic style of handling things and little room for pleasantries. He tends to be brash and straightforward, a demeanor that belies his talent for subterfuge. In his mind the world is a cold and uncaring place and so he in return is cold and uncaring towards it. It takes a lot to warm him up to anyone else but he knows the importance of trust and having someone to cover one’s back.

4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?

Generally as long as the GM sticks around, in my experience PbPs last. If players drop out, they should be replaced. Perhaps a vote on whether a new player is necessary to fill up a party role or just to keep the player count high enough to have a diverse and interesting game could help.
Posts should happen once per day, maybe look for some feedback from players every now and then if there is anything that they have to criticise about the game, or to add that might improve the game.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

@ cctodd- Baldric is a human (native to Magnimar, of Chelaxian stock but his family has been in Varisia for generations). He is a Fighter with the Lore Warden and Martial Master archetypes. I can commit to posting 1/day (and can usually do more during the week); I agree with everyone who has said the slower the posts come the faster the game dies (first its every 2-3 days, then before long its 1/week, and then it takes a month to open a door and nobody is waiting around to find out what's behind it).

I'll have a submission ready before tomorrow morning...

Welcome aboard! I'm kind of new myself, and after having followed many PbPs, including some pretty awesome ones, I'm itching to give it a shot myself. Rise of the Runelords is the one that started off the Pathfinder Adventure series, and it seems pretty good, so this works for me. Fortunately, I JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO got done developing the backstory and personality of my character concept.

Amazing how many people have already signed up in just 1 day . . . Looks like I have tough competition.

Anyway, introducing Mirosir Tepescik-Tessadril:

cctodd wrote:

As a Thassilonian Conjuration Specialist Wizard, Mirosir will provide battlefield control, but can provide buffing, debuffing, and utility as well. Thassilonian Specialist means no Evocation (most blasting) or Illusion, but means more battlefield control. Just expect him to be a bit wobbly after combat, due to the Tainted Soul Drawback (reskinned to be from vampiric curse rather than fiendish bargain), which will preferably be tied to the Accursed Story Feat in a quest to get rid of his Drawback. (These are not in the crunch, which I haven't put together yet, except for Ability Scores, which I had based upon 15 point buy.)

cctodd wrote:

2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?

In addition to the possibility of utility spells, he's pretty smart and can do research, even though when not busy he tends to be Garfield but without the fat (er, actually, he's me). This is due to his accursed origin -- again, he'd actually like to get rid of that (and so would I). Also, since you specified 20 point buy and I had statted him for 15 point buy, I could spend the extra 5 points on Charisma and make him be decent for social situations, or spend them on Wisdom if everybody else has bad Perception, or if you REALLY want min-maxing, pump them into Intelligence, although to my tastes, that seems inefficient (only gets 2 more points), except for making him even more specialized for spellcasting, and I'm not sure I could even do proper roleplaying justice to Intelligence that high.

Item crafting is a possibility for him (preferably once he gets rid of his curse, which would tend to interfere with it), although I only vaguely had that in mind.

As a character, he has absolutely no desire to replace his Familiar, but the realities of animal lifespan compared to Dhampir lifespan are going to catch up to poor Ravenmoore sooner or later, and Improved Familiar is certainly on the table for improved utility in and out of combat, and would be a good hook for a mini-drill-sergeant to shape him up in the process of trying to get rid of his curse, which he really has no clue of how to do himself.

Nobody needs to worry him about having a secret urge to drink their blood unless he actually gets infected with something new that causes this, because unlike many Dhampirs, the Deadly Sin tainting his spirit is not Gluttony, but Sloth (which is also often associated with Undead, but not as often thought of, because it isn't as scary).

cctodd wrote:

See Mirosir's page. Already made this long before this recruitment thread started. I am naturally inclined to do that. Still need to put in the crunch, though. Fortunately, this just happens to be a less busy than average week to do that, so if necessary, I could do this during the week instead of having to wait until the weekend.

Scholar of the Ancients sounds like the perfect fit thematically for Mirosir's Campaign Trait (it reflects motivation for being in Sandpoint apart from the fact that his adoptive/foster parents sent him there(*), and is even decent mechanically), although I haven't yet put that in the Crunch.

(*) His parents think that his soujourn in Sandpoint will be good for him to get rid of his curse of Sloth, and he even wishes it were so, although currently he has no hope that this (or anything else) will actually work for that purpose; on the upside, at least Sandpoint is in the right general area to find Thassilonian stuff.

I can say no better than this:

I'll certainly do this if accepted. One piece of advice to everyone, though -- since Spambots probably cruise through the messageboards, we should all exchange e-mail addresses through Private Messages instead of in a publicly viewable thread like this. (I already get blasted with tons of Spam, and my ISP does almost nothing about it . . . but if I send somebody a reply to tell them their account has been compromised by a Spambot, Verizon blocks my outgoing message as spam -- go figure.)

With respect to posting frequency, I am fine with posting once a day, although a subset of Thursdays might force a skip (late nights at work combined with lab meeting next morning), and family emergency might force a skip.

* * * * * * * *

If you need something different from Mirosir but you still want me, I don't have a ready alternate made myself (Rise of the Runelords is in the wrong time and place for the other 2 characters I have made into concept form, that you can also see if you go to my profile), BUT I do also have the idea of playing Das Korvut (normally an NPC of low-to-medium importance in Sandpoint) or one of his family/apprentices, as a blacksmith by day job and a Huntmaster Cavalier by night job (even though not necessarily at night). (Huntmaster Cavalier is the pseudo-ranger archetype, that is generally worse at tracking than a real Ranger, but better at combat.) Just send me over the stats and existing background info and should be good to go.

If you need an archery Ranger, converting Shalelu from NPC to PC (as for Das Korvut above) might be a possibility -- I would be willing, but she might have too many pre-existing levels and/or plot-required actions for this to work. Just putting this in there just in case it is a possibility.

Honestly, though, given how many people have signed up for this in just 1 day, I don't think you'll need me for the alternative character concepts above. Just putting listing them as reserve options in case we get isolated on the same side of a reality dysfunction. :-)

Edit: P. S. Do you want a separate avatar for Familiars, Animal Companions, Eidolons, etc.? Or should their posts be rolled into the character's posts? I just saw somebody's post that had perfect facewarmer cat avatar for Ravenmoore, as opposed to the skinny cat avatar that was the only one I could find when I looked for this a few days ago in the actual Avatar chooser.

I'm interested! I'll have a concept up in the next couple of days.

Count me in! :)

1. Jayik can cause a large amount of damage with bombs, and can provide healing in a pinch. His high stealth also makes him a good scout.

2. Jayik can provide income and gear by crafting alchemical items.

3. The entire story is available in the alias, but the gist of it is that he wants to grow in power and wealth until he can take on the dragon that enslaved his people.

4. I will post as much as necessary (and then some) to keep this campaign alive. Jayik's already fallen victim to one aborted adventure; I don't intend for it to happen again.

Once a day should be fine by me. :)

Maxelmish Stoutwick, halfling extraordinaire reporting for duty! (Stats are in the profile)

1. A little bit of healing, a little bit of shooting to start with. Later on, he'll have more support spells and start tripping/disarming regularly.

2. Trap monkey. Bardic knowledge. Party face.

3. Grew up on stories of adventure. Out in the world to make his own. (More detail in profile)

4. I think if everyone in the game posts at least once a day without exception, things will go well for the long term. Don't be afraid to swap out party members if a player isn't keeping up to that standard. (after a warning of course)

Dylos here.

Working on this character, a Daring Champion Cavalier of the Order of the Flame, and I had a question.

You said that one of the traits must be from the campaign guide, however there are Rise of the Runelords campaign traits that were published after that guide that were inserted into Varisia, Birthplace of Legends, the campaign trait I wish to take, Thrill Seeker, is one such trait, is that ok?

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat? Damage, plain and simple, though may become a bit glass cannony due to the nature of her Order. As a cavalier she will also share teamwork feats with the party in-order to increase effectively. Additionally, as long as she continues to get rid of opponents her damage will increase exponentially if she is using her challenge.
2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?
Moderately decent social skills, namely Intimidate and Diplomacy she will also be trained in survival.
3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.
This will be in the background and is dependent upon her trait choices.
4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?
I've seen plenty of PbP fail, (you can check my profile and see just how many inactives there are, though some of those inactives are finished PFS stuff.) Sometimes it's because of lack of interest from the GM, and other times people just stop posting (typically the GM) At least once people just weren't a good match out of character. You may note that one of my failed inactives I was actually the GM of, the reasons for that one failing are mostly on me, my recruitment didn't gather enough applications to really choose from good choices and I ended up taking everyone who had a finished character at that point (this is not a good way to choose characters for a PbP) ultimately I wasn't satisfied with the group I had recruited. A suggestion that I would give is take 6 players so that you can lose one or two without losing a big portion of your party.

I present, Vikh the Bloodboiler.

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?
A song of battle which adds strength and stamina to all, a strong arm, a large weapon, backup healing, and more awesome battle songs to come.
2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?
An array of knowledge (Skalds, like bards, have all knowledge skills which can be used untrained), a specialization in diplomacy, backup healing, and a good bluff to keep things interesting!
3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.

Story:

Vikh grew up among kinsmen, in a small Shoanti clan called Steyn-Quah. They revered animals with particular traits of tenacity and rage. Typical patron animals were badgers, boars, and buffalo. One of the smallest of the ancient clans, its members were among the most stubborn and proud of the Shoanti--which is truly saying something. A series of unlucky battles had decimated their numbers to an unsustainable cluster of families and warriors.

During Vikh's tenth summer, he and his father Grissnak while hunting inadvertently happened upon members of a rival clan--the Skoan-Quah looting a sacred crypt. Grissnak overheard the men speaking of a buried greatsword owned by a famous skald of old. This weapon was known to Grissnak, as it belonged to his ancestor. The blade was known as Dongoor, roughly translated as Note of Blood.

A battle ensued. Grissnak was mortally wounded, but fought on with the tenacity of a wounded boar. An enemy who had taken the mighty Dongoor as his own was slain. The huge blade fell to the ground near where Vikh hid in a bush. Instinctively the youth ran to the blade. There he hoisted it up and shouted a song of battle and glory, of lust and blood! Though he was only a child, Vikh and his father managed to drive off the remaining grave robbers.

Grissnak was proud of his son for his valor and courage. There, outside the crypt of their ancestors, Grissnak died in Vikh's arms.

It wasn't long before the Skoan-Quah, most sinister of clans, spread rumor and deception regarding the incident. They accused the Steyn-Quah of looting, desecration, and murder. War broke out and decimated what remained of Vikh's small proud tribe. Vikh was wounded and fell unconscious during the final battle. When he awoke he found that he alone had survived. His ancient proud people had been erased. Adding insult to injury, the enemy had taken his sword, the great blade Dongoor.

Vikh spent the following years in exile from the Shoanti tribal lands, labeled a thief and a murderer. He ventured near and far, learning much and more of the people who inhabit the lands and the history that tells their story. In battle he sings songs that remind him of his father, and fights with a passion. He carries a replica of Dongoor, though in truth it is a poor facsimile. A constant strive for justice, vengeance is on his mind.

4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?
I will check the game multiple times a day. I'd like to think that I'm a good writer, and I want to encourage the forward momentum of the game with my posts.
On a side note, I have never played any of the Paizo adventure paths, so this campaign is all new and eagerly anticipated. I hope you like my submission.

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?
"Broke" is a front-line fighter, built to get in an opponent's face. Don't expect a lot of subtlety.

2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?
Traits and skills will focus on wilderness survival. I'll probably take a level or two of ranger along the way, to provide survival, tracking, and nature knowledge support.

3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.

Character Background:

Born to the Lyrunh-Quah (Moon Clan) of the Shoanti, Radechai lived a fairly typical life for a young Shoanti man in the Cinderlands, learning to hunt and fight. At the age of 14, he underwent his Trials, travelling deep into the lowlands to bring back a trophy. After a successful hunt, on his way home, he encountered a trio of orc raiders out of the Hold of Belzken. His first thrust embedded deeply in the chest of an orc, snapping off between its ribs as he tried to draw it out. The orc, though dead on its feet, displayed the stubbornness of its kind, and continued to fight with its fellows. With a disbelieving glance at the sheared-off blade in his hand, he discarded it to the charred ground and proceeded to beat three orcs to death with his bare hands. The falchions and axes of the orcs left their marks, and the youth was practically crawling when he finally returned to the camps, towing a bundle of orc-heads and a bladeless hilt to verify his story, leading to his adult name.

Over the last year and a half, the raids of orcs, giants, and goblins have grown more and more frequent. Several septs of several Quahs agreed to send hunters and scouts out into the world, to see what stirs. Broken Blade has been charged to do what he must to protect the People. His travels lead him to the coast, and he has heard that the Hinterlands around Sandpoint are a hot bed of Goblin activity. He has arrived in Sandpoint just in time for the soft civilized folk to celebrate their Swallowtail Festival.

Tone and Personality:

Broke knows that most of his people hold the soft scions of civilization in contempt, and, with the ignorance and arrogance of youth, was prepared to carry on those attitudes. He has been on the road for several months, now, though, and has seen strong and virtuous people alongside the weak and corrupt. A certain amount of unconscious arrogance still creeps in, especially in a sort of strange overcourtesy (No, no let me do that. How can I expect someone who grew up sleeping in a bed in a house to be strong enough to do this?) I don't intend to run him as obnoxious about this, and his attitude adjustments as he learns and grows could provide some nice humor potential.
He has a deeply ingrained respect for his elders, even those of the soft people. As he is only 17 now, that may include most of the party.

He will tease wielders of melee weapons. (Oh, sure, if you need a SWORD to do that...)

4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?

a. Don't let combat get bogged down. Have each character give you some default actions, and let everyone know that characters will be botted after 12 or 24 hours to keep things flowing.

b. Don't be afraid, once a combat is obviously won, to go ahead and wrap it up with narration. While combat can be the most intense and, for some, most fun parts of tabeltop play, lots of posts of dice rolls can start to drag. It can kinda break some verisimilitude when a fight that lasts for 45 seconds of a character's life takes three months of the player's...

c. Throw in the occasional off-stage cutscene, even if it is just a slice of life of a fairly unimportant NPC.

d. Keep in touch, but don't overpromise. I'm very willing to wait two weeks if the DM is going to be out of touch, but don't say "I'll be on vacation next week," without considering the catching up you'd need to do when you get back. Longer delays can be tolerated when they are known, as long as the GM or player posts at the end of it.

I chose Monster Hunter as my campaign trait, it seemed the most fitting with my background, mechanics-wise but doesn't match background wise. I hope that's okay. I did write a background that gives me a reason to be in Sandpoint.

I can agree with not letting combat bog things down, but not by putting a short time limit on things. Especially 12 hours. I'm out of the house for 12 hours a day to begin with because I spend 3-4 hours on the road a day just to get to work (living in Seattle sucks for traffic). And even 24 hours is tough to deal with because we can't guarantee when the GM is going to post. Trying to put a limit such as that really does limit the interest of a lot of people because at that point because you may as well just try and host the game on a VTT or over Skype or something. That's just my 2 copper.

+1 to this.

Normally, I would disagree, but for a PbP, this might be necessary. Start without this, and then work it in if needed.

If you are going to do this, add a plausible way for the PCs to know about it -- like a dream scene (this works better if some character has a connection to dreams, like certain types of Oracle, Sorcerer, or Witch, or a Shoanti spiritualist).

This kind of thing could happen to any of us. Especially likely for those of us with family members whose medical condition makes family medical emergencies likely.

The interest continues - excellent! Just a reminder that I want to have the party selected by the 19th (Friday), so get those applications in.

Just for reference, here's who's applied so far (as I can tell):
Ulrich - Human Cleric
Amy Unwin - Half-Elf Rogue
Cade - Race Cleric
Satinder - Aasimar Ranger
Hardish Swift - Half-Elf Rogue
Baldric - Human Lore Warden and Martial Master
Norme - Human Summoner
Vikh the Bloodboiler - Human Skald
Narciso - Half-Elf Summoner
Travok Shortstrider - Dwarven Cleric
Marlow Conrad - Human Slayer
Mirosir Tepescik-Tessadril - Dhampir Wizard
Jayik - Kobold Alchemist
Maxelmish Stoutwick - Halfling Bard (Archaeologist)
Tanwen Anwyl - Human Cavalier
Broken Blade - Human Brawler

Let me know if I've missed anyone.

@UnArcaneElection - The avatar is up to you. If it will make things easier to have a separate avatar for your Eidolon or familiar go for it. Again, I haven’t played with summoners, so I’m not sure how big of a role they play out of combat (which seems to be when you would need your own avatar).

@Tanwen - I’m good with that trait.

@Marlow - Fluff trumps crunch in my book. Even if it makes less sense, choose the trait that best matches your background.

The Exchange

I'm going to be getting the rest of my character sheet put together. I will get it up tonight when I get home.

I had Amy Unwin (going to be changing the name too).

The Holy Flame burns brightest upon the darkest of Knights, Tanwen Anwyl*, the Dearest Holy Flame has arrived.

*:
Tanwen is a Welsh name meaning White Flame or Holy Flame, and Anwyl is a surname derived from the name Anwell which means dearest or loved one.

Tanwen is now fully stated and has a background in her profile, also an important note, she is carrying exactly the weight limit of her strength score for a light load, even half a pound more would push her into medium encumbrance.

Going to throw my hat into the ring.

1. A decent healer and close-combat fighter
2. Face, I guess?
3. In profile
4. So players and gm keep the pace going, it should be fine.

i created an alias for Baldric- there's more crunch posted in the profile (and i'll try to add to the fluff at some point).

The Exchange

It's been a busy day, but I have a finished sheet here. I've re-named her Rhiannon Unwin and here's the sheet for her.

I have an Alias that I can edit, but most of the stats and things stayed the same. Just for good measure I will post the rest of her information here with her sheet.

Background: In the same way that someone is destined to be a Paladin or might feel called to the vocation of Cleric, Rhiannon is a born scholar.

Even before she knew the words, Rhia would stare at them for hours.

Rhia grew up as the weird hermit girl. When her mother forced her to go outside and play the only kind of “play” she could manage was exploring the streets for relics (that mostly turned out to be old garbage). The other children became as annoyed with her “relic” hunts as she became with their dismissive attitude about the wonders of the history around them.

Her father, Aeson the Elf, is a scholar in the Pathfinder society—he met her mother when hunting for an old text that he heard she had come by—he taught Rhia the Thassilonian language from a young age, along with Elven and Draconic. She joined the Pathfinder Society, in part, to be closer to her father, but also because it was the only thing that would make good use of her skills.

Rhia is the record keeper for the Pathfinder lodge in Magnimar, but she was sent out on an assignment for the Shallowtail Festival in Sand Point, mostly because she kept annoyingly talking about the event and the fire that burned the original church down (quoting facts and reciting other things she had read).

She was sent on a what should have been a distraction assignment to get her out of the office.

This is the nines entry, I had played about with making a druid, but went with the fellow I had built in the previous attempt.

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?
Corrin is set up to be ranged support with the ability to add in melee if necessary
2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?
Hes good with animals, has some basic survival skills
3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.
Corrin grew up in Greengold, in Kyonin with no knowledge of his father. He grew up playing with elven children, human children and even a few half elven children in the community and seeing the other half elven children's parents answered questions for him. Watching one half of their parents age much faster than the other made him realize his mother couldn't stand the thought of seeing his father age.
In his early 'teens' He took to training with the city watch, the fact he was naturally clumsier than a lot of the elven members made him focus more on his defenses, though at archery he excelled . It was on the eave of his official beginning as a member of the guard when a letter arrived at his home... His father had passed, murdered by a madman in the town of Sandpoint.
The news devastated his mother, she said nothing for weeks. Then one day, she spoke simply. She told her son she was retiring further inland, and she loved him but for the moment she couldn't bear to see him. It brought up too many pained memories of his father. Corrin understood. he had known for years his mother was unhappy, and he honestly didn't blame her. She gave him a good amount of gold, Her journal detailing her life before she became pregnant with him and hugged him farewell. He left for Sandpoint the very next morning. The letter had been from one of his father's friends a Daviren Hosk, owner of the Goblin Squash Stables and young Corrin found himself working there in the early mornings and late evenings as a stable hand, and at the mill during the day. He shares a small home with some of the other mill workers, serving in the militia when needed.
4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?
As someone above mentioned A list of 'standard' actions to be done in combat. (to keep combat moving) another game im in ivolved in the gm periodically checks in the discussion part and asks if anyone has issues or suggesstions or even things they would like he's yet to change a thing, but we are all content but the fact he was willing and checking is a good thing. Also as someone else said, just keep us informed (both players and gm) If you have something coming up and wont be on for a few days drop a line. We all have lives outside of this I believe.

Also I am in the process of editing equipment, last gm gave us max, other than gear Corrin should be good to go.

Got most of Mirosir's character sheet done. Still need to add the Class Features and Possessions parts and decide what to do with the other 5 Ability Score points (leaning towards putting them into Charisma for Use Magic Device and future social skill goodness, if I don't get feedback to do something else with them). Didn't realize how long that was going to be -- definitely going to want a separate sheet for the Familiar; if I was playing a Summoner (not now, but in the future) I would even more want a separate sheet for the Eidolon (most people seem to do this for their Eidolons; most people don't do this for their Familiars, but it seems to me that makes the main character sheet harder to manage).

Sure has been an undertaking. And to think that just a few weeks ago I had the embarrassment that I couldn't even think of an original character concept for the Adventure Path that started it all! Now that I have done this, it will be awesome even if I don't get accepted into this particular campaign -- Mirosir will be good to go for another one!

Just a friendly reminder that the party will be announced tomorrow. If you want to be considered, get your applications submitted sooner rather than later!

I'd like to submit Zwain for this RotRL adventure. I've currently got him in another RotRL campaign that has stalled.

Adventure Spoiler enclosed:
We've completed the initial goblin attack and investigated the glass works and were about to return to the basement (having completed the rescue)

I'm at work now, but I'll get everything in to your format later this evening.

I'm an avid poster and know how to make a PBP last. I'm running one that has been going since 2011 and another since 2012 and I'm currently in two that are over a couple years running themselves.

The Exchange

Just as a reminder I changed my character's name.

Grand Lodge

Hello buddies! Can I join the dispute?

1. What will your character contribute to the party in combat?

As a Cavalier, Avalon will protect his teammates in combat, using skills like "aid another" to ensure they come out victorious, besides having an average dps.

2. What will your character contribute to the party out of combat?

Out of combat Avalon will serve as a motivator to his teammates, always trying to bring a friendly word and encourage them in difficult times, and may serve as a diplomat, if necessary.

3. What is your character's origin story? This doesn't need to be long - I'd just like to get a sense of your character's motivations and background.

Avalon is a human Varisian descent, born in Sandpoint, his parents provided services to the family Kaijitsu of Sandpoint Mercantile League. His father worked as a bodyguard for an important member of the family Kaijitsu, and having taught the basic precepts of fighting since Avalon's childhood. Avalon's father dreamed that his son would become knight and made several negotiations with the Kaijitsu noble family so he could get a knighthood for his son. After saving some gold and finally get his objective, the father of Avalon would give him the news that night, but he was killed by one of the "Chopper"'s murderes while protecting a noble of Kaijitsu's family. The noble told to Avalon that his father had bought him a knighthood and asked him if he wanted to provide services to the family as his father did. Feeling guilty for failing to protect his father, Avalon accepted the proposal of the noble and vowed never to allow their wards to die and one day kill his father's murderer and his whole gang.

4. What ideas do you have for keeping this PbP alive (if any)?

Basics: post frequently to keep the pace of the adventure!

Corrin is indeed ready, gear verified and good to go,

Equipment is finalized. Character is in essence ready to play. I might add a physical description later.
