Alright, here's my character. I'm currently working on his description and background. Look good?

The Dragon, I am done with the background. Here is Tanna Elenvathar, an Elven Ancient Lorekeeper. The crunch is not posted yet. Once you critique the story I will get that up for you.

Here is my character. I'm looking forward to the possibility of playing a support monk. Advice seems like so much fun.

Sczarni

I also need some advice...should I keep what I have for my character, or should I switch out some skills for things like bluff or diplomacy?

As for Character motivations:

"Vil'Seem, after spending the last couple of months dodging trouble near the borders of Cheliax, made his way toward Riddleport in Valisia. The rumors of a great gambling tournament have enticed the more adventurous and (rarely) risky part of him to try his hand at it. Afterall, being one of the best cheats and face readers around, it should be a fairly simple and, more importantly, safe way of making some money...right?"

Dotting.

I will throw together a submission tonight.

Just to be clear, you said everyone gets a free extra feat, or were you just discussing a house-rule your home group has?

I would like to play an Elven Druid (Treesinger), but I will need to look at the player's guide to make sure it's not too out of place.

The extra feat is correct. Everyone making a character adds this bonus for free.

I'm throwing together this submission as an Elven curved blade user.

I'm torn on class, I'm leaning heavily towards a swashbuckler rogue but the spell dancer magus holds an undeniable appeal as well, and I've not ruled out the fighter class and one of its many archetypes

Submitting Golmar Almarch, Human Fighter 1. Nothing flashy, meat and potatoes style fighter. Not optimized for roll-play, but is built to role-play.

Any criticism is appreciated, Dragon.

Submitting Tamina. Ever the student, Tamina gracefully approaches the town in search of any knowledge regarding the shadow she can glean. She avoids the gambling, as she's quite lucky to have the few coins with which she escaped her accusers. Quiet and sweet, Tamina finds herself listening to the other scholars debate over the cause/meaning of the phenomenon.

Stats:

STR: 10
DEX: 14
CON: 11
INT: 18
WIS: 15
CHA: 12

130 gp to be spent primarily on bombs and other splash weapons, alchemist's kit, healer's kit. Healer build as far as feats and spells go. If I have slots left over at any point, they'll be used for debuffing.

This is Aardvark Barbarian's character submission. I need to throw his whole backstory together, and thinking he might alternate with a few ranger levels early on. If so, those will be shored up with Boon Companion so his pet, Awdrithicus Hemovourus, doesn't fall too far behind. Or, if you wouldn't mind, he could start as a ranger, and have a not fully grown plant pet until 2nd level?

The short of it, is that he lives a hermit life along the outskirts of Riddleport, and the blot has been bad for some of the plant life. He's come into town to find out who or what is responsible.

This sounds interesting so here is my dot :)
And psionics are allowed :D that is my favorite of the non core :)
I will have to take a look at what's around and strikes my fancy, but a human chaotic wilder has been something I have wanted to try for a while now :)
Oh ya, I have no experience with second darkness or riddleport, so I'm green in that regards.

Things are rolling along nicely, looking forward to see how this ends up.

The Exchange

Dotting.
Ruhk, haven't I played with you (that actual alias) before?

Yup, we were in a Jade Regent campaign together got a bit.

The Exchange

Ah yes, I remember now. Good times.

Anyone have a count of submissions thus far?

My character is still heavily in the works, but I am working on a dwarven soulknife (soulbolt/gifted blade). I like the dwarven angle, but I'm not quite sure if I like the 20ft. base movement combined with the 20ft. range on my mind bolt.

Still heavily under construction, but this will be the alias for Sixteenbiticon's submission.

Okay, I think I got it now. How's this?

The Dragon wrote:
I forgot to mention: you get two traits which can't be from the same category. One of them can be a campaign trait, if you've access to the 2nd darkness player's companion.
Miijoka Jikawe wrote:

You may only have 3 traits if you take a drawback. Also, you may only take 1 trait per category. Both Artisan and Rich Parents are from the social category.

Ick, you're right.

So this WAS going to be my submission, but then i went ahead and sent it on another campaign :(

Buzzgob the Psion Telepath:

Buzzgob Gianteater
In the GobGob tribe, every goblin gets a special name on their 5th birthday (approximately, whos counting?) from the tribes Cleric. This is a very special and sacred day and can shape the rest of their lives so it is very importiant to get a good one.
Buzzgob was named alongside Dies Horribly and Idontgiveaf#+*leavemealone. We think she was having a really bad day that day. Anyway, i was named Gianteater because one day i would kill and eat giants. Great! A good name, thats all a goblin could hope for, except i was scrawny as anything. It was hard to live up to such a big name and he was tormented by it again and again. Its a boar! Call Gianteater! Its a horse, Gianteater will kill it! Lets help him out *ties up Gianteater and throws him under the horse* Its a slug! Call Gianteater, we found his giant!
Eventually he came to hate that name. Actually he came to hate the one who gave him that name. So one night he snuck into the Soothsayers hut and taking the biggest hammer he could find, he brought it crashing down on that idiot Clerics head. Gianteater that!
Turns out the Chief doesnt like it when you off his Cleric...
So Gianteater was chased out of the village with nothing to his name except the big hammer still blood soaked. Alone in a massive world.
Next he came across a small horse and carrage which he singlehandedly ransacked. Well, he hit the horse in the leg with his hammer, buckling it. Then the horse crashed into the cliff face beside the road and exploded... All his doing, right? >.>
When he went to loot the carrage he got quite the surprise! Inside was an Elan Psion, a powerful creature of pure psionic energy. And it was mortally wounded. In its death throes it tried one desperate attempt to prolong its life, to thrust its mind into the only other living creature, Buzzgob, attempting to take it over. However, it failed as the elan expired too soon to comple the mind swap and only a fragment of its conciousness made it across. Enough anyways to have a voice, but unable to completely take over.
What? Not quite en..gh pow..r... Cant dom..ate... Need.. Res..t.. Goi..g d..rmant.
Great. Now not only am i stuck with a stupid name, im tribeless AND i got a stupid voice in my head trying to steal my words! And. and. and....
And with that Buzzgob passed out on the side of the road.

When he awoke, he was upside down in a steel cage...
What is i doing here? Where here is?
To his astonishment he got a reply! It was the same annoying voice from before!
Hello. You appear to be awake. Good. It seems that my forcefull takeover was only met with partial success. But dont worry yourself too much about it. There is nothing you can do about it.
Whaat?
Sigh. Such limited inteligence. I try to steal your words.
WHAAT???
But i failed. So now i give you words. I will let you steal the words from others heads. You see that man over there? He intends to sell you.
Ooooh! Neato! Thats good?
NO! Thats not neato, err good, err. Thats bad. I need you to survive long enough for me to get out of this acursed body. So heres what we are going to do.
I am cozy?
Sigh...

He was a goblin psion but it looks like i am going to have to start over from scratch :-C

Submitting a more combat-oriented monk to the list. Crunch and Backstory is in the profile.

Dragon,

I see that drawbacks have been mentioned. Are you allowing them. If so, I am considering this one which requires DM input:

Attached

No drawbacks. I'll get back to this thread at the end of the week, I've some busy stuff coming up.

Vixen, I like your background. The bullying thing seems a little out of place, but except for that, and it's minor, there are no red markers.

Lucius Lyst, friendly neighborhood elven alchemist, checking in for consideration. Background and personality in profile.
It doesn't matter at level one, but I'll be picking up the Chirurgeon archetype like every polite alchemist should (unless I get picked with a party full of clerics or something).

Good luck everyone!

If I may, why does it seem out of place?

Datura Oleander NG Elf Druid (Treesinger)
Padrym the Crazed NG Dwarf Soulknife (Soulbolt/Gifted Blade)

Lucius Lyst LN Elf Alchemist (Chirurgeon)

Quite a list of applicants so far. Maybe our all-seeing, all-knowing GM will consider expanding our party a bit so that a few more of us have a chance to play. :)

Expanding the party/closing the applications early?

My character is still on her way.

Considering the apparent lack of divine characters I will adjust my character without changing the identity: A Warpriest of Calistria instead of a Slayer devoted to her.

May I present: Nel Sandhal, protector of knowledge, lover of gambling, and able to get everyone out of dodge, when the getting's good. Half-elven Cavalier Order of the Tome. Background and crunch in profile.

Personality:
Nel is a very trusting individual who gets along well with anyone regardless of their appearance. She can be a bit of a know-it-all, but understands that other people would like to have the chance to speak too. She is fiercely loyal and quick to forgive, but will never forget. She prefers to talk people down, rather than attack. She does understand however, that sometimes no matter the amount of talking you do, there will be times when she will have to fight.

How are we determining mounts/animal companions hit points? They have two hit dice at first level. Nel is fully made, but I am waiting to figure out what I need to do with her horse.

First time with an animal companion? It took me way too long to figure them out myself.
Typically it's half HD not rounded (fractions trimmed). So 2d8 is 4.5x2 or 9 (plus Con of course). That is, if the GM isn't using houserules and if I finally got it right.

Character Theme Song

I am down. Going to make a compassionate Gnome oracle of life seeking adventure thrills.

Lem Nevercor, cleric of Norgorber. Sheet is still in progress, but domains, stats and skills shouldn't change.

He should be a pretty solid face and I think I'm going to focus him on summons for combat. I'm leaning toward negative energy channeler. So in spite of his small size he's useful in and out of combat, as long as his summons last. His halfling sling-spear isn't as good as a crossbow but it's equivalent to a shortbow for the next couple of levels.

Considering what I've read about riddleport, it's quite likely that every character made so far could be in riddleport, but the ones chosen to play are the only ones who actually survived.
Nice place we're going to eh?

Backstory:

Ellamin Wolfswift had not known a regular childhood. He was born aboard a pirate ship. Even at an early age he was subjected to the arts of swordsmanship. The captain had taken a liking to him and made him his pupil as he had been quite the duelist.

The Captain had taught him all sorts of dueling stances, with some dirty pirate tricks O'course! Ellamin was noted by the crew to duel almost like an art. Everything moved like the flow of a stream, precise, fast, and deadly. When one day, their ship had come under attack from Orcish Warships. Ellamin and the crew fought hard alongside one another, however it was a futile as it was not enough to hold back the bloodthirsty orcs. The ship sank, and with it Ellamin was laid outcast..

When he came to he was on a beach, one he did not know and still doesn't. He tried to stand but found himself falling to the ground again. Fortunately, some nearby travelers had found him and nourished him back to health. When he was well enough, he made a travel inland and came upon Riddleport.

Ellamin had just about given up hope even after finding Riddleport. He had no money, no work, and no home. He was thieving and stealing to eat day to day. One day when he was thieving he stole a book from a hooded man. When he came to a secluded location, he read the book. It was called The Eloquent Dagger it spoke of techniques used by assassins and other subtlety professions. Ellamin practiced these techniques day after day combining them with his art of thievery. He soon earned a reputation as a mercenary, who killed and stole for his pay. No job was too much, or too little in Riddleport

Soon that same hooded man approached Ellamin and said "I've been watching you and I know what you took. I let you take it because I sensed some fate with you. Have you learned well?" Ellamin nodded his head but also expressed his want to learn more in the art of the blade. The hooded man agreed to take him as a pupil and Ellamin soared through all the tests given to him. The man then said to him "You have learned well my pupil but you must do something for me in return, see I am not a human. I am a ghost merely cursed to walk even though my time has passed."The man lifted his hood and it was his former captain clearly deceased in a transparent form. "The devil himself didn't want me because of my misdeeds while I was alive. So he banished me to walk these plains for eternity. I need you to go to the tavern in Riddleport and go into a little.. contest for me. However when you win, do not ask for money. Ask for my soul in peace my child" With that the man disappeared from sight.

Ellamin traveled to the tavern in Riddleport and heard "Cheat the Devil and take his loot for yourself!" by a strangely golden goblin. Ellamin thought to himself " I am ready for this, Fate has guided me..I must for my master."

Sorry Ive taken awhile to submit his backstory, I had been away for a while. His crunch should be accurate, and hopefully you enjoy his story as much as I did writing it. Presenting Ellamin Wolfswift for your inspection..

Uhhh...maybe Riddleport isn't the best place for Vil'Seem to go. Afterall, that blot in the sky looks...bad.

(It's been there for a while now.)

Ah, well then, if nothing bad has happened yet, I'm sure it won't happen if he goes there just for a little while!

And somewhere in another realm, a god of irony laughs hysterically.

When was recruitment supposed to close?

Sorry, a little late with this,

Backstory:
Growing up in the southeastern fringes of the Meirani forest, one thing Datura was taught early on is that their non-elven neighbors were not ones to be trusted. He was told to not speak to them, not to interact with them, and all around just avoid them. So it is how he lived. It was fine by him, as he found solace in the flora and fauna of his homeland, until his inquisitive nature about the neighboring wildlife drew him ever slowly further and further out of his forest home.

On one such excursion, he stumbled upon a group of mixed travelers, mostly human peppered with a dwarf or two, they looked to be merchants hawking wares. He was able to watch them from a safe distance, before he decided he should tell someone. When he shared what he saw, the locals put together a group to meet with them, and he led them to where he had seen them. The elves had sent a small group to speak with them, while most of the others set up an ambush. He was told it was a security measure, nothing more. When the liaison spoke with what must have been the caravan leader, they began to argue. The elves demanding the caravan drastically change course or turn around. When the travelers refused, they were fired upon until they lost enough men and conceded to leave before any more of them died.

That was when Datura realized that even his own kind were just as untrustworthy. He found that it wasn't humans or dwarves that couldn't be trusted, but people of any race, when they are determined to get what they want. He decided then that he couldn't call himself a part of any community that would treat strangers so harshly, and from what he's found, it has been the nature of almost every one he had come across. Everyone begins with smiles and handshakes, but as soon as they don't get what they want from you they turn to sneers and lies. The only thing he could rely on acting exactly like itself, no matter what it wanted, were the plants and animals of the world. He knew what drove them to act the way they do, and there was no duplicity in it.

He settled for keeping to himself in the foothills of the the Calphiak Mountains, between his elven homeland, and the next large human settlement of Riddleport. To further his disassociative behavior, he would only move about at night, to be less likely to stumble upon travelers. It was then that he discovered a whole different world of wildlife, to include a few species of night-blooming plants. One such variety he had only stumbled on during a solar eclipse. It was a rare bloom that needed to seed during the eclipse to grow. Amazed by the odd tenacity of such an unusual specimen, he took great care to tend to it. He learned that it was similiar to the flytrap, in that it fed off creatures drawn to a sweet smelling oily substance coating it's leaves, that shone when reflecting the moonlight. Before long, this plant had become his one true friend and even seemed to regard him when he spoke to it.

As of late, a strange smudge or blot, had appeared in the sky in the vicinity overhead the human city of Riddleport. Normally he would not concern himself, except that the thing was disruptive to the natural order. It would create shadows during the day preventing some of the plants from getting sunlight, and even worse depending on the lunar cycle, it would block the moon's light completely. Datura felt its presence had something to do with the people of the human city, so he got up the gumption to try and learn who or what was responsible for this blemish in the sky, and if possible convince them to stop it before it disrupted more than just small patches of wildlife.

GM Dragon, please let me know if you have any issues with the backstory, I have no problem modiying it as necessary.

EDIT: woot, just noticed this was my 7000th post

As I've just come home from my last exam (with a nice grade, no less), it seems school is out for the year.

In other words, I'm back on the GM train. I'll start responding to questions now.

This is Important:

Due to the overwhelming response, I'm no longer accepting interest. If you've already posted in this thread you have untill Monday 30 of June 00:01AM GMT to finish up your characters. I'll be picking the party by then, and we should be good to start off some time monday evening.

I might expand party size to five or six if there are a lot of characters I really like.

The Dragon, I'm noticing an elven alternate racial trait that removes a penalty from another alternate trait. Taking Lightbringer removes the penalty from darkvision. Even though this is legal, is it something that you would allow?

This can be found in the Advanced Race Guide.

5-6 players can be pretty good, it allows for more room top either generalize or specialize a character without losing utility in a group.

As another thought, no matter who gets picked in the end, it may be an idea to invest that extra feat given in a teamwork feat, it can make a lot of difference both early and late in a game.

On the off chance I get picked; I wanted to take a pet, a Small-sized Ferret (Weasel (Bestiary 1 Familiar) with Giant template, stat-wise). Not cambat-trained (yet, I suppose), just to have (and hold and squeeze and cuddle to itty-bitty pieces). How much would you charge me for that?

I concur that teamwork feats can be extremely useful. It adds a level of cooperation and tactics that can easily be overlooked. Escape Route, for example, allows people not to take attacks of opportunity for moving through squares adjacent to you or within your space.

In cramped areas, such as houses or narrow tunnels it could save the party from a TPK.

I have the crunch up for Tanna Elenvathar.

This is not a final build, but so far it seems to make a lot of sense. After some feedback I may tweak it.

Dot.

Will have a character in a few hours (no more than 5).

I have a question,

It seems most, if not all, of the campaign traits say to tie it with another character. Do you want us to do this only after the players are picked, or beforehand, or not worry about it at all?

I only ask because I would prefer not to tie my story to someone else, and either one of us not make it, then the one that did make it will need to adjust accordingly.

Also, I added his description and personality into the profile.

I may do some fine-tuning of Padrym's background, but otherwise my submission is complete. Here's hoping we have a great party and a long-lasting adventure.

Grand Moff Vixen wrote:

I am open to feedback on the crunch for Tanna. I am still weighing options including feats, but so far this seems to fit the concept.

Feedback from anyone is my goal here, not just from the GM.

I'll drink to that!

Resubmitting Alraniel "Nel" Sandhal, this time with complete mount, Gabraltar.

Crunch, back-story and appearance is all in Alraniel's profile. Good Luck to everyone, and may it be on your side!

Edit: Wooo! I managed to get the 100th post in this recruitment! Best of luck to everyone and may the journey be worth the wait!
