AJM's Rise of the Runelords: Anniversary Edition Campaign

Game Master AJM8665

In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town—and perhaps all of Varisia.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This is an alias of Sir Jolt. Durgan's a dwarven fighter who will likely switch to Stalwart Defender unless party composition dictates otherwise.

This is a character I built for a RotRL game that appears to have died before it ever started. Would love to get the chance to use this character.

Love the concept and character but it seems you haven't selected a Trait from the Players Guide / other trait from traits list.

Ah, thanks for catching that. I'll swap out the Varisian Wanderer trait then for the Outlander Exile trait from the Shadows Under Sandpoint source. It works even better for the character concept anyway.

Exile
For whatever reason, you were forced to flee your homeland. Chance or fate has brought you to Sandpoint, and it’s here that your money ran out, leaving you stranded in this small town. You are also being pursued by enemies from your homeland, and that has made you paranoid and quick to react to danger.

Benefit
You gain a +2 trait bonus on Initiative checks.

Besides, rogue=initiative monkey without even trying. If they do try then they just always go first.

Speaking of traits, I just noticed I have one too many. Nixing one of them now.

Added info about "The Winds" that guide Vachordi

Alrighty, hope you like this guy, he is a Mountain Dwarf, Empyrael Bloodline, Tattoed Sorcerer.

I ended up spent a lot longer on him than I had planned (sometimes I get really into the background, as is the case this time :p It's quite long). I also got most of the way through a barbarian before I got the idea for Doon-Kahahn, so that didn't help :p

Sorry all, I've been really busy yesterday and today and haven't had a chance to go over everyone's characters in depth yet.
Also, due to the scheduled maintenance downtime, I'm going to extend the recruitment until Saturday noonish.

I posted my character early in this thread so I am just checking in to register my continued interest.

Same =)

I made some changes to Vachordi's Personality to better reflect the character.

Also, not trying to sway you or anything...but Saturday is my birthday...just sayin.

But seriously any feedback or concerns are appreciated

Just to break the monotony, I'm going to go Teal'c on you all and instead say, "As am I."

I got a question, how much about Thassilon is known in the current age?

Do they know about the runelords, the emperor, or the seven virtues that were corrupted into the seven sins. That kinda stuff.

In case you missed it^. May add to my background too as I find out more about sandpoint. ;)

Still interested as well.

And the best Teal'c moment was when he found himself at a certain monologue by accident...

Indeed

Question - Does one get regional languages for free as part of background (ie Inner Sea Primer)?

Oh, excellent. I've wanted to play this. I offer this character.

Also, are regional languages, in particular Varisian, available as a learnable language?

Yes, they are available to learn. If you're going with a Human, please select your ethnicity. Once you've chosen that you get your ethnic language for free in addition to Common (Ex. if you choose to play an ethnic Varisian your starting languages would be Varisian and Common).

So yes, you would get Varisian for free :)

I believe what is known about Thassilon, is that it was ruled by seven runelords, great wizards who each epitomized one of the seven sins, and what the runelords considered the seven schools of magic (not considering divination a true school). Enough is known about the sins/magical schools that there are modern day wizards who have resurrected some of the Thasilonian magical traditions (as represented by the options in Inner Sea Magic). I wouldn't say that any of that information is particularly well known however, only amongst scholars and students of history. Some might perhaps know of the links to Absalom and Xin, but I'm not really sure (and I may already have said too much. That's up to AJR :) ).

Thats brings up something I have been considering as well.

Currently Zoruk is a Transmuter, dont know if it would be better to keep him that way or make him a Thassiloin Transmuter. Anyone got any thoughts on that?

Zoruk. I think going Thassilonian is a great idea. If you are really going to focus on transmutation and are ok not using enchantment or illusion, which I think is certainly doable...but full disclosure I often make not optimized characters, as you can see, so it might not be the most optimized

Well I am mostly concerned with how it would effect the party. Not sure if the opposition research feat would work with it. So having no access to two schools is not an easy loss. Granted they dont have a ton of must have spells but they do have a few that are kinda hard to shallow, invisibility quickly comes to mind for example.

Well, I guess it'd come down to how focused on Thassilonian magic Zoruk is, right? I mean, is he the sorta fella that'd be willing to give up two entire lists of spells to further his knowledge of "true" Thassilonian magic?

Posting this character for consideration, I would love to play, I will be very active as my IRL campaign that I was playing in just fell through.

Well, I'm competing with you for the Arcane slot, so it won't likely affect me, but I would say no, that discovery would not work, or if it did it would only restore it to being a 'normal' opposition school perhaps (so takes two slots to prepare, etc). Invisibility certainly is an awesome spell, but it's not like it's necessary exactly. I do like the thassilon magic thing if for flavour reasons if nothing else; was definitely considering going with a thassilon specialist wizard before I got this crazy idea for a tattooed dwarven sorcerer :p

Submitting this character for review. I plan to concentrate on divination as she advances, but I'd also like to pick up a few more channel feats. I think Topple spell with spiritual weapon might be nice too (maybe around 7th lvl or so). I'll probably craft wand and or potion.

I'd love to finally play this AP. I'm stuck out in Afghanistan and have run out of books to read.

I had a bit of time to kill before work this morning, so I put this together for reference and potential new players.

Well done, Mirela! It's good to see so many character concepts and eagar players. I'm glad to be amongst so much talent.

Woops. Not sure why he was down as Neutral. Doon-Kahahn is meant to be NG.

Hmm, some interesting statistics for alignment in that list. Heh, only 3 lawful characters.

Hang on, let's tally them up.

LG - 3
LN - 0
NG - 9
TN - 4
CG - 10
CN - 2

Just an update I've sorted out my profile, changed my name and also added my back story.

Nice list also Mirela.

Yeah I choose N cause Zoruk does not really make choices based on anything other then whats best. If its considered good, bad, lawful, or chaotic does not factor in. ;)

I think I will go thassilion specialist. Not only for flavor but after looking over what I would lose, its not that bad. More so when you compare it to the other thassilion specialist. xP

Edit-Thanks for the list Mirela, bet it will only grow.

The submission list for this will be huge by Saturday. Think you'll have a task on your hands sifting through all these GM! :)

Just dotting to let you know I am still here and still interested.

@Zoruk: I would recommend making certain the GM would allow Thassilonian Specialists first. Remember, it may be the Anniversary Edition, Revised for Pathfinder RPG, but most of what is known about Thassilonian Specialization magic, is actually post-RoTRL events, specifically the opening up of Zin Shalast to exploration by other adventurers. For that matter, I seriously wonder if he is gonna let you get away with Azlanti human. There are no Azlanti any more. The last one was Aroden & he died about two hundred years ago.

@Mirela: I was actually planning on Patre being a bit more Skills than Arcane. Still debating on whether I want to switch out Darkvision for an additional skill point per level.

I believe you may have meant Martial. =)

Other than excellent list. I appreciate seeing where the competition is.

Impressive list.

Judging by his stats he hasn't gone True Azlanti, just Azlanti blooded. It's an option from the Inner Sea World Guide.

You may have a point about the Azlanti stuff though. It's been 4-5 years in continuity since Rise of the Runelords.

I expected nothing less.

Now while my wife and daughter are away at Girl Scouts I'm going to sit down and go over everyone submissions so far. I'll post any qustions I have tomorrow.

Grab a drink and enjoy delving into our bizarre minds!

Azlanti is just those who have strong characteristics of that people. I mean if you have chelaxian, garundi, and mwangi blood what are you considered. Whatever your strongest characteristics are I am sure is what you are considered. Anyways in game terms its just for flavor and what bonus regional language you get, nothing gained or lost by it.

As for Thassilonian specialization thats up to the DM, I cant find anything on it one way or the other. You can argue that the events of RotRL brought it back, but just as much you can say it has no bearing because their is nothing to stop someone who researches that empire to find it or figure out what they did so long ago.

Also not sure about the continuity thing, on Golarion has any time passed at all? In ISWG which was released a good deal after a few APs, it says that Eodred is still alive. So at the very least events from CotCT have not passed.

Feel free to correct me. Going to wait on the DM for any changes, gets a bit annoying switching back and forth. xP

No problem everyone. It was actually kinda fun pouring through the applications. It's the best group of character concepts I've seen in awhile from any game I've applied too.

I'm not going to nix anyone's concepts. If I choose Zoruk, we'll find a way to work his specialization into the game.

That sums everything up nicely, we seem to have a nice spread going here. A little heavy in the Martial (to be expected) and perhaps a little thin in the Divine.

@ Mirela: Running with two archetypes, not that it matters in the long run.

@ Irnk: I think Zoruk is supposed to be more of an Azlanti inheritor than actual full blooded Azlanti. The stat block for full Azlanti involves a +2 to all stats. I checked his stats in a point buy calculator and found them in line with a normal human's. Also, in Golarion culture, it is pretty common for people with 'Azlanti' features (dark hair, pale skin, widow's peak) to claim Azlanti heritage. They probably do have some Azlanti blood, but no more than anyone else. Modern 'Azlanti' are severely watered down.

Perfect!

Wufcat the cleric of Nethys up for consideration. Just got equipment left to do will update as able.

You know their are five slots, why no 5th listing for those secondary and hybrid types? ;)

I would fit well in that fifth slot :)

Everyone's version of what constitutes a "hybrid" class may differ.

Great list! A lot of interesting characters I agree. It's nice to see three ½lings and a gnome submitted; the gnome especially feels (at times) like a forgotten race. I'm also surprised by four wizard submissions to one sorcerer; usually it's the other way around (from what I've seen anyways). Not much to put in the 5th slot; no gunslingers, oracles, witches, magi, monks (yet) though I'm sure by Saturday we'll have just about eveything.

Hmm. My profile still shows three traits; have to figure out why it isn't updating.

I think Vachordi is pretty much in the hybrid range, but I guess that is up to the good old DM to decide

See what I mean. Durgan didn't mention the Bard in the list of hybrids. I consider the Bard to be a hybrid class, is it arcane, or is it skilled? It's all subjective.
