The Hand of Corruption: GM_Loki's Black Crusade

Game Master Lokio

You are a Heretic; a renegade turned against the oppressive Imperium of Man. The crumbling monolith mobilizes the might of its numberless armies, and you must stand against it. But can you realise your destiny before that power consumes you?

Welcome to the Screaming Vortex. We hope you enjoy your stay, and Happy Death to the False Emperor.

Now let's talk heretics.

Excellent good :) - glad to be deemed worthy of eternal damnation ;)

Since it looks like we've a Psyker joining... I was thinking of a Renegade built to be a Medic, with melee fighting on the side. Will be Nurgle aligned.

Male

Since we already have an heretic to be an "psyker" (well, due to restrictions might think what to make) thinking of making heretek or going with psyker too.

Any changes to standard character creation (other than no Chaos Space Marines?)

Male

ah, third time someone is sneaking past me :P

There're four archetypes and five players, someone's going to pick the same one as another. Don't worry about it, archetype has far less to do with your character's capabilities than your alignment does.

Also, while I'm thinking about it, anyone who has played other 40k RPG's should be aware that there are quite a few mechanical changes between those systems and Black Crusade. Notably the lack of career paths, a lot of skills have been boiled down and combined similar to what 4e and Pathfinder did to 3.5. A lot of talents have been renamed. There are no advanced and basic skills. Fear works differently (I mean you hang out with daemons. Scary has a whole different meaning.) and corruption works a little differently as well. Just some FYI for those who haven't looked it over very thoroughly.

And no, that's it as far as restrictions go, although I reserve the option to veto any choices that look like power build loopholes or just don't fit. While creating your heretics, also think about this: It is the year 687.M41 and you have run afoul of Inquisitor Renthor who has captured you, imprisoned you aboard his ship, the Chains of Judgement and is about to put you in stasis for transport to the Tricorn Palace on Scintilla, the Inquisitorial HQ in the Calixis Sector.

Here, I shall present the Heretek Danate! Your body tell less lies when it is naked on my table... and I am able to conduct my experiments on it! Do not fear. Your sacrafise shall please the Chaos

Opinions and comments? Building up to me more as a technical man who got to handle the Lore/Technic/Navigation

Danate, you are aware that being a Veteran of the Long War makes you either somewhere in the ballpark of 10,000 years old or at least a very close associate of one of the original traitors of Mars.

Male

Yes, I did read the description and gave a though about it. However, I can take it out and replace with something else since had an idea for the background / info for the character.

He might have been in the war and one of the participants at fighting against Imperium. In one of those attempt to escape, the ship managed to enter the warp - resulting to time-statis - and popping back out later after millenias -> could also tie it easily for a reason: why danata was captured so easily etc (and also give a good explanationon for his Good-Craftsmanship cybernetics parts).

Nevertheless, I can remove that and replace it with something else. Not sure how important role / edge that talent could give here

I'm not saying you need to change it, I was just making sure you were aware of what it meant as it's extremely rare for non-marines to have that. As long as you can explain it (and with the time-alteration of the warp and the nature of Chaos in general, it's not that hard), it's alright with me.

Male

Mhm. I will still consider this and try to see if it fits the personality I have in my mind. Otherwise I think that he is ready

PS: noted some mistakes with my char when did some careful reading (Weapon tech give only bonus to my Power Axe) and other minor calculation

Definitely going Apostate on this one :-)

"By the precious blood of He who sits on Terra, I implore you humbled masses to shake off these shackles! For Freedom!"

"The Adeptus Terra have betrayed us! This war is nothing but a fabrication to swindle us of out of what is rightfully ours!"

"Aye! They deserve something! They deserve our Hate!"

Anyone else taking Apostate?

Also anyone recall if there is a Sorceror Talent in Black Crusade?

Is it alright if I use my prerolled stats. I've had this character in mind for some time and actually went ahead and built him. He's definitely not that much stronger (I don't think) than the others, but I will present him below, and allow you (collectively or just the DM) to decide. I can go either way, just wanted to know if it would be allowed as I have quite an emotional attachment to Adoris anyway.

@Adoris, you rolled 1d5+19 for your starting Infamy?

Male

@Radavel: Read through the rulebook and did not find the talent for sorceress. Are you perhaps looking for something similar?

Dark Archive

I just checked the book too and I can't seem to find it. It seems it is a talent peculiar to Dark Heresy. Oh well, we can't have them all hehehe

Yeah, it was 23 before Beauty and Dominion. =) (Added +3 to make it 26)

Dark Archive

wow!!!

will complete the rolls later; have a lunch date.

@Adoris, your stats are a little high. Are you sure you rolled them with the 2d10+25 for mortals or +30 for CSM's. Because 2d10+25= a max of 45, so how is your Per 46? I'd prefer it if you rolled your stats here. That way no one can claim you didn't roll what you got.

@Radavel, the psychic powers are different in each game line. The sorcery in the Disciples of the Dark gods and Radical's Handbook are for Chaos-ing up your Dark Heresy characters' powers. Trust me, the ones in here have that in spades already.

Sovereign Court

Personally i'm pretty dubious about not seeing the rolls for the character. Sorry. I'll roll with it if GM is cool with it.

I'm with AK and GM_Loki on this, since everyone else is rolling on boards - it would be good to be consistent.

Sovereign Court

Besides, concepts are reusable. The only thing that will change is the stat rolls.

Male Human Phantasmist 1 (8/8 hp)

The Perception was 46 after the +5 from the Wrath disgrace. Now its 44, oh well... Se la vie. :P

Sovereign Court

Wow, the character buildings pretty complex even though i'm very familiar with RT and DH. Slowly working my way through it.

@Adoris: Ah, those weren't written in yet. Either way, mostly looks good, but you seem to have included a second motivation which mechanically is Ascendancy but you have Dominion written in. Underneath it you have Dominion written in again with the correct stat modifiers. I'm assuming you wanted Dominion, in which case you might have too many stat adjustments.

@Alexander: I myself always found DW to be the most confusing. This one I actually like the best, but DH is the simplest.

Male Human Phantasmist 1 (8/8 hp)

oh... thanks for that, I had copied Danate's format, and must have left some stuff in... =)

EDIT: Should be fixed now... =P
Which makes my willpower... 43? Some Psyker I'm turning out to be... =(

AK - are you taking Double Team? - if you are then I will as well, if not then I'll get Takedown instead.

Character creation is mostly underway - just need to sift back through and make sure my initial advances are spent appropriately.

Male

@ Adoris: I know :) I took some great time constructing my character and used simple way to show each part

I also hope that my character "alias" is understandable and easy to follow. Even with alingment used different block and numbers to show how many points each of the chaos gods have.

I think I will change the Ancient Warrior with something else which sounds more appropriate

Dark Archive

Any inspirational literature I should read that does not star Chaos Space Marines?

Dark Archive

@ AK and Mark

Spoiler:
if both of you are making Renegades, will you guys be amenable to a little background tie-in?

If both of you are former Inquisitorial Acolytes, then I suggest that my PC was your last assignment before you turned to the "Dark Side".

Radavel + AK:
Ok by me if AK is cool with it

I should be able to polish my char off tomorrow at the latest.

Sadly as far as I know most of Black Library's catalog starring Chaos is all the CSM's. And even those are few and far between. Although I am currently reading Void Stalker which is about the Night Lords, and it seems to feature some non-marines as major characters.

Male Human Phantasmist 1 (8/8 hp)

GM_Loki, do you have any recommendations for backgrounds? Do you want us to start as Imperium slaves and then rebelled? I'd always thought of Adoris as someone who was outside the Imperium, in one of the other human worlds that the Imperium hadn't discovered yet. But he was forced to leave when the Imperium did discover the planet and began to convert its populace. I'm not sure if that's in line with anything else in the game, but thats what came to mind as I was developing the character.

Male

Making some changes to character to just make him fit more the technical guy feel-> +5 WS & Ancient Warrior off (give 500xp) and spending it to rank 2 skill (500xp) Tech Use +10

Sovereign Court

@Mark- yeah I believe I will take Double Team.

@Radavel/Mark- let me get back to you on that, if I can tie it into what I already have in mind then sure.

@Adoris: There are plenty of such worlds in the Jericho Reach. Many of the planets there were long ago a part of the Imperium before it was cut off. When the Jericho-Maw Warp Gate opened, the Imperium thought to go back and all the worlds would be so excited to be welcomed back into Imperial rule. This was not the case, so the Imperium decided to reclaim them by force.

Male

Danate background:

Danate was raised in one of the Forge Worlds in Jerico Reach. The Omnissiah was the omnipotent God
who was the utmost pinacle of the their believe. It was their duty and destiny to prove to all other races
that the Omnissiah was above everything in technology, logic, machinery and reasoning.

He grew up and was taken into training to become Tech-Priest. He had everything what was belived for the
tech-priest to have: intelligence, passion and willingness to serve the Emperor of Mankind. However,
Danate had his faults... the greed to understand, the desire to learn, the believe of superhumanity above
others. In his pursuit of wisdom and intellingence, going beyond the logic and truth to find the artifacts and
learn the use and purpose Danate had stepped over the boundaries of the laws. Trying to stop him and make
him to learn hard for his mistake, the Adeptus Mechanicus started to move.

Danate could not believe what they started to do. Trying to reach the Magoi title in everything his goal to become
Magos Master he had to trample even in the forbidden paths and to reach for knowledge long lost... even by ways of
despised. All of this came to the final point when the higher hierarchy of the cult decided to halt his studies and
force him to smaller servitude.

He raged and killed his fellow priest and stole cybernetics which he could gather at that moment. They were greater
than most of people and they would not have so much time to learn it! Ficle was human-life and he for sure
would not waste it. That which was taken from him, Danate swore revenge to the Cult of Machine. He was above them
and the rest of humanity. There is nothing you could not solve or accomplish with the power of science.

Escaping and reaching others places, he kept evading the Imperium forces and their inquisitors. Not settling to one place
or another he found time to install the cybernetics. Since the God of Mankind had abonded him... there were others gods
who would gladly accept his devotion but the true god would be him in the end.

Bound to have some mistakes and let the imagination fly although not the most original

Sovereign Court

For my clarity- no one 'starts' aligned with anyone, right? So we're all unaligned for some time?

And none of the talents/skills from our race/archetype count towards alignment? Or are they also accounted for when you do a count at 10 corruption?

Male

Yes.

So, all the Character & Archetype Talents / skills do NOT count towards aligned!

Only those talents and skills you BUY. Don´t remember where it was but I can search for it if needed to quote

@AK: From the Black Crusade: Core Rulebook pgs. 74-75 - Although it is nigh impossible for a character to begin the game Devoted to a certain Chaos God, depending on his choices he may quickly end up Devoted to one or another. ... All Archetypes start as unaligned, and any advances granted as part of the Archetype do not count towards Alignment. ... Whenever a Heretic earns 10 Corruption Points (in other words, when they hit the thresholds of 10, 20, 30, and so forth), they check Alignment. ... It is possible for a Heretic to gain enough Corruption during the later stages of Character Creation that he may pass one of the Thresholds. If this occurs, the Heretic does not check Alignment until Character Creation is completely finished and all starting Experience has been spent.

Danate:
Danate, since you have the trade skill of Astrographer, and I have the trade Voidfarer, as well as basic Tech knowledge and Screaming Vortex knowledge, I thought we might be traveling together, at some point. It might make some sense. My character feels compelled towards the Screaming Vortex, as a path to power. But perhaps you feel differently.

Background:

Adoris (Beloved One) Kalmath was born on a remote world in the Jericho Reach, with a lesser degree of technology that most of the worlds that traded with it. For the one part, this world of Satisfyne, was not as integrated into interplanetary trade as its neighbors. Offworlders were rare, but not unheard of. And legends of the Imperium struggling to defend humanity from the evils of the Universe sometimes trickled through.

The free traders that sometimes berthed on Satisfyne told him much of the world outside his familiar world. But as he grew into adulthood, he began to notice that many gave him deferential treatment, later he realized based on his strange and haunting attractiveness. With little to stand in his way, Adoris inserted himself carefully into political society, ready to use his presence to climb the ranks. It was here that he first began to research more about what came from the Screaming Vortex. A trader brought him a purple/green crystal from a distant asteroid, and when Adoris requested it with strange words, it was granted to him. At first, he could not believe his fortunes, then he began to realize he had psychic powers. The crystal that was bequeathed to him whispered in his mind, informing him how to become more powerful. Over time, he learned to control the crystal instead of the crystal controlling him.

Still, it remains with him (Psy-Focus). Using his powers, Adoris made his way swiftly through the political ranks of Satisfyne. It was when an Imperial Contingency visited the planet to instruct it in its surrender to the Imperium, Adoris attempted to use his powers on the Chaplain of the division, to remove their influence from the planet, but his powers were not great enough. The Chaplain discovered Adoris's powers, and immediately sent for a Black Ship. Adoris escaped, with the interspace traders, he had easily allied using his own powers, and he took over the ship to move it toward the Screaming Vortex.
