This a thread to gauge interest in a game set in the World Serpent Inn.

Since the Inn is said to have access to pretty much any plane or world, this game is open to any character, using any system. Yes, you read that right. ANY character, ANY system, also of ANY level, or equivalent thereof.

Now this may sound utterly and totally insane, the type of madness that would make the Old Gods run screaming, but there is one huge caveat:

This will mostly be a *ROLEPLAYING* game.

There might be some combat, but this is mostly a game where players can finally play a PC they've been dying to play, where he's a 10th level Wizard/5th level Warblade using D&D rules, a 8th gen Baali from World of Darkness, or a Jedi Master capable of insane force effects that would make Luke jealous.

some serious rules:

1) I have access to a decent amount of RPG books, but if I do not have the rules you plan on using, you must show them to me, either here on the site, or via email. And I get the right to refuse anything, though that's unlikely.

2) Combat will be few and far between. The game is in the WSI, and is mostly a game about just having fun playing a character you may not ever get a chance to play elsewhere.

3) IF combat breaks out, it will most likely be vs other PCs. IF you are not ok with that, try really hard to avoid behavior that will piss others off.

4) Combat will pretty much be ad-hoc'd, due to the potentially vast number of systems or even levels. If its readily apparent your gonna loose, then you will. But if it seems like a close call, some rolls will have to be made.

5) There will be no limit to the number of PCs in this game, as I will not really be running it so much as loosely guiding the game. I'd like to throw a few of my favor PCs or concepts in the mix as well, but that's only if I have the time and desire to stat them up.

6) You do NOT need to actually stat up your PC, at least not in a 100% complete manner. If you plan to play in a laid back, loose fashion, you only really need certain stats in case combat breaks out between you and another player. Highest spells known/castable, or their like would be key, as would any truly iconic magic item. A ring of prot+2 not really, but a sword that's been with you for 50 years, and is almost artifact-like, would need it's powers laid out. We can hammer out details per character.

7) Recruitment, such as it were, is basically gonna work like this:
"Hey Monkey, I wanna play this badass xxx using system z." me: ok, toss me the important rules, since I don't have access to that system.

oh and there really won't be an end period either.

Hopefully this actually gets some decent responses, cuz this was a LOT to write, LOL.

Dotting.

Lantern Lodge (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path Subscriber)

Dotting as well.

Given I don't have access to really anything else, I'll be coming up with something from Pathfinder. Maybe a test-run of a character I'm already playing, but a bit higher level so I can see how he plays out that way. I'll think of something and let you know, Monkey.

Also, hopefully we'll get to play together in Nightflier's Campaign. Good luck on being chosen. Your background was very impressive.

I would like to play a 12th level Magister/3rd level Intelligence evolved from Arcana Evolved, but I was wondering if you'd let me use Pathfinder skills instead of AE since they're a little more simplified. :P

I'd also like access to feats and spells from the Complete Book of Eldritch Might.

Sounds like my kinda thread, dot dot dot.
I'll probably use Pathfinder rules if only for the sake of simplicity.

Lantern Lodge (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path Subscriber)

As a thought, for combat, we could always let the two play it out and have the members of the tavern vote for who wins. Like during the old days when the crowd would decide who won a fight. Showmanship essentially. The fight can be more a roleplaying opportunity as well. If there is going to be a fight to the death, I suggest the two fighters communicate with each other beforehand to find out whether or not the other is alright with potential death in combat. This way there's no animosity during PVP.

These are just a few thoughts. I plan on roleplaying but this is something I used to do during loose roleplaying back in the day.

Interesting, will have to check it out later when I have more time.

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

That's actually a good idea Ronin, thanks.

@ Stardust, yes to both.

With any system that is similar to PF, PF will be the standard where applicable.

For the curious the following are the systems n settings I have access to, off the top of my head. This is by no means complete:

Pathfinder
3.5
Arcana Evolved
Forgotten Realms
Eberron
Mutants and Masterminds
Vampire the Masquerade
Werewolf the Apocalypse
Exalted
d20 Modern

The wealth of possibilities are staggering and I don't know where to start.....

But I'll send you an email to discuss somethings.

Here is Mellaius Selliene, the 12th level Magister, 3rd level Evolved Human (I changed that from Intelligence Evolved), a powerful priest of Idonis. I haven't yet got the stats for his lion animal companion.

Dotting for interest Monkeygod.

I have a couple of characers from games that fell off the map.

question - will there be more precise build limits? ie Level limit, wealth, etc? In case it does come to combat how will it be balanced?

I don't think I'll be applying to this, upon further thought. I'm already in too many PBPs. If some die, though, I'll likely apply here.

Oooh. Yup. I am in! :) Ill get something up and running!

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

General limit on level will be 20. This is because some builds mite be best at that level, or maybe you just feel like taking a concept that far.

Now I say general because if, for whatever somebody wants to play something beyond 20, I will allow that. Since there's no PF rules for that aspect of play(YET) and the 3.0 rules kinda suck, any such characters will be handled on a case by case basis tween the player and I

Now I'm not expecting many to want to play at that level, *BUT* in case some do, I want them to know they are welcome here.

@Edgar, I hope you'll reconsider, as this isn't really a post heavy game. Unless your actively involved in something, you don't need to post every week, let alone everyday.

I said above there's no closing date for recruitment, as you can hop in any time, however to make things easy for all involved let's say initial recruitment will end next Friday, Feb 10th, midnite EST.

You don't have to be done by then, but that is when I'll kickoff the gameplay thread.

One last thing: as this will be a RP heavy game, an in-depth background will help, as well as a solid personality. Also, be sure to have a reason you're in the WSI.

Speaking of in-depth background. Mellaius does have the Sensitive feat, so if you want to use that for plothooks or something, I'm good with it. :)

And yes, in-depth background and solid personality are the main reasons I went with Arcana Evolved. :P

Okay...so I'm gonna submit this bad ass eidolon build I had from a previous abyssal demon game that didn't work out. Tell me what you think MG...

Would Gestalt and Template be allowed? (gestalt would be with an NPC class, the Template might be Ghost (or a Deathless equivalent from BoED))

Gestalt rules

Let me think about it! ;)

Hmm.... are undead allowed?

Edgar Lamoureux wrote:

Saw vampire on the list :)

Fair enough.

I'm thinking Pale Stranger Mysterious Stranger, possibly gestalted if that's allowed. It's an expansion of a backup character I have thought about for Voice's game.

I think KenderKin meant Vampire the Masquerade, not the monster.

I know. But Vampires from Vampire are still undead.

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

Undead and Gestalt are both cool, but I will limit you to gestalting only two claases or 1 Racial HD/class combo and no PrCs, to keep things fair.

Remember, this is mostly RP based, so crazy mechancial class wonkyness won't really matter.

Stats; Points Buy? Roll? Can choose whatever we want (within reason)?

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

As this is mostly a player fun game, feel free to do either 30 point buy or 4d6, no drop.

If you have a stat 18+ or 9-, you will need to RP that. I don't care if you have a 22 in charisma or a 3 in int, but you had best RP the hell out of them.

One of my favorite PCs in a RL game was a Minotaur who started with like an int of 8 and ended up with a 3. He had an intelligent hammer that did most of his talkin lol.

I think I'm going to incorperate WoD's freebie point system, but not sure how just yet.

What about pre-existing stats, like using a monster?

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

Link me the monster and I'll check it out.

Pale Stranger

When advancing a monster with class levels, you're supposed to add +4, +4, +2, +2, +0, and -2. Do you want me to just advance it as I would as a GM?

So with that 4d6 is that 4d6 6 times keep the best three of the four you roll? Or 4d6 6 times keep all four, thus with a possible starting stat of 24?

I believe it is 4d6 x 6 keep all rolled.

Sure, that works. However, it appears there's an error in the stat block, as it says Con 10. Unless I missed something, that's supposed to be Con "-"

and yes, 4d6 keep everything. Yes, I am aware you could roll really high, which is why I also said point buy was an option as well.

Yeah, it should be Con -. I noticed that too.

I've always loved the world serpent inn!

I actually played a game in the world serpent inn where I was a Duskling Mage who had spent enough time on the material plane to learn a bunch of martial arts. So basically, Incarnum + Monte Cook's World of Darkness + Martial Arts Mayhem. He was fun. I made him to seem like a loner, but in truth, he loved parties and groups of people. He loved popping into the material plane to give tours of the planes to adventurers. He loved finding fun dungeons, looking them over, and renovating them for adventurers to explore. It was the idea that he was a dungeon real estate agent, and dungeon interior designer. I think a bit of a Trap Smith as well.

I'm thinking of Monte Cook's World of Darkness for his Mage class, and a few of a trap smith prestige class, enough to take a complete martial artist feat tree. It depends on if you like the concept or not.

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

Love the concept actually. I do not however have access to Cook's WoD book. I am hesitant to allow it however, as I am allowing normal WoD as well. Mage in that is a lot more complicated however, unless you want to be a Sorcerer from that game.

If you can send me the details of the Mage class, I'll look it over and figure things out that way.

Heh! I want to play a totally ridiculous idea but I dunno if I can. Essentially he would be 40th level! :S Hahaha

Pvt.Fury wrote:

Then gestalt the character. That's what I did.

Hmmm. Could work!

A lot more complicated? The only thing I can think of, gaming wise, that's more complicated than the WoD Mage magic system is GURPS. And that's only because you need knowledge of physics and advanced trigonometry to play it.

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber)

Well, I believe it uses Monte Cook's magic system that he presented in Iron Heroes.

So...if I'm wrong or you don't have that...

Casting in a very rough nutshell:
I build the spell out of the following components. They have different costs associated with them.

From the book:
Area: Determines how many creatures
or how much area a spell affects.
Duration: Determines how long the
spell lasts.
Range: Determines how far a spell
reaches.
Conjure: Summons or creates objects
or creatures from elsewhere.
Control: Controls others’ minds and
emotions.
Damage: Determines how much damage
a spell deals.
Divination: Reveals or conceals in-formation.
Energy: Creates, destroys or con-verts energy.
Enhance: Improves the target’s ex-isting qualities.
Heal: Heals injuries and other af-fl ictions.
Illusion: Creates false images and
sensations.
Metaspell: Enhances, suppresses or
alters magic.
Movement: Moves the target or af-fects its ability to move.
New Power: Gives the target a new
ability or shape.
Protect: Protects against harmful
things.
-------
The DC to cast a spell is it's Component cost plus your exhaustion rating.

From the book:
When you successfully cast a spell, take its component cost
and subtract your mage level and 10 (treating results less than
0 as 0). This number is the spell’s exhaustion rating (ER). For
example, a 16-component spell cast by a 1st-level mage has a ER
of: 16 (spell’s component cost) – 1 (mage level) – 10 = 5.
At the start of the day (after eight hours of rest), your
exhaustion rating is 0. Every time you cast a spell, add its ex-haustion rating (if any) to your current exhaustion rating. For
example, after casting three spells with ER 5, your exhaustion
rating is 15. Your exhaustion rating increases the Spellcraft DC
to cast a spell, so the more exhausted you are from casting, the
harder it is to cast another spell
----

There are also rotes, which are well known spells. They are cast the same way except I receive a +5 bonus to the Spellcraft check made to cast them.

The mage class, meanwhile, does this:
I choose a path (I'm choosing Necromancy)
I get a +2 to Int.
I get increased 1d6s, and 4 skill points at each level.
I get a pool of Component points, and when I cast a spell, I burn it's component cost from my Component pool. Additionally, I can spend them to grant me a +1 bonus to Spellcraft and Concentration checks, and there is no restriction on how many I can spend in one go (either in casting a spell or boosting a roll). I get 60 at 1st level, and it goes up by 15 each level from there. I recover them at a rate of 5% every hour I sleep.
I get something called Gnosis at 1st, 2nd, and every even level. They are like special feats I get for spell casting only.
The Monte Cook WoD system works on a method for Skills in which I choose to boost a certain ability score, get a bunch of skills associated with that score as class skills, and then I can choose a few more. BTW, the association doesn't necessarily make any sense. Might, for example, grants a +2 to Strength, but grants Navigate and Pilot as class skills.

Wah! That was a lot to type! What do you think so far mate?

Edit: Now that we have PM capabilities, I can PM you even more details.

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

Goblins,
I am off to bed, but I will check that out tomorrow. Never fear, we'll figure something out, one way or another. I try to work with my PCs as best I can to make things work for them.

Cheliax (Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber)

Sweet. I'd love to use a 'make it up as you go' magic d20 system.

lol, so let me guess, everyone is making a 20th level character. :P I hadn't intended to reach that high, but if everyone's doing it, I might too :P I don't want it to be too mechanically crazy though. Simplicity is my natural element. Besides, with my animal companion being somewhat complex as well, I don't want to have too complex a character. :P

Then I will try and hold myself back, just to be the odd man out!

Are we going to be allowed gestalt characters? I saw someone banding the term about.

Shadow. wrote:

Yes, gestalt is fine.

Mullet-over wrote:

I just got this! I'm laughing hysterically right now... :P

So I could actually play a lich?

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

Yes, you could actually play a Lich, if you so desired.

@ Goblins, I like it, but man it sounds complex. Here's the thing: IF you feel comfortable and competent in its use, as well as provide me with more details on the class itself, I will most likely be ok with this.

1/2 Githzerai 1/2 katane (undead-vampire)

Monk / snake shen / dragon shen (Gestalt?)

Vow of poverty from Exalted deeds?

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

What are the Shen's from? Was that an issue of dragon??
