The most important part is knowing your bonus to performance combat rolls.

It's your Charisma + Your BAB + any ranks in Perform (Act, Comedy, or Dance), whichever is highest.

Note that your trained bonus doesn't get applied.

For instance, Rekkstuff has a +2 BAB, a +4 Cha, and 1 rank in Perform (Comedy), so he gets a +7 to his Performance Combat checks. Using a performance weapon grants a combatant a +2 bonus on performance combat checks, so if his guitar counts as one, this grows to +9.

You get to make a check whenever a trigger is hit as a swift, free, or immediate action.

For instance, knocking an enemy prone lets you make a check as a swift action, and entering a rage for the first time in a combat lets you do one as a free action. Rolling max damage with a weapon or feinting/tripping the enemy are also ways to get a check.

If you beat the crowd's DC, you make them like you one step more, and the more they like you, the easier things are. Their bonuses/penalties apply to all attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, ability checks, skill checks, and saving throws. Importantly, this does mean it affects your Performance Combat bonus.

We want to get them up to helpful, which gives us a +2 bonus to everything, and we want to kick this lion's butt while doing it.

Unfortunately, not much I can do this encounter. I have saving finale, but there won't really be saving throws vs. a lion. CLW is touch range, Hypnotism will only affect the closest gnolls...

I guess the best I can do is daze, and cover it up with spellsong so the crowd doesn't try to maul me for my interference.

Ack! I did forget one thing. BAB bonuses scale for the Performance combat bonus. From +1-+5 you get +1 to the check, 6-10 +2, and so on. It scales like that for the perform checks as well. 1-5 ranks is +1, 6-10 +2, etc.

Wow, it turns out that Performance Combat is really tough.

For a group that big, I guess it would be. The base DCs aren't so bad, but...

Aye - it does seem that with the ability for Performance combat checks (even after a crit) to decrease crowd satisfaction it makes for a bit of a turkey crapshoot as to being able to win.

There was also the +6 difficulty for outnumbering your opponent by more than 2:1, then the +2 for "cheating" with CLW, and +2 for crowd size. So you would have needed a 30 to climb out of that bottom spot.

Note to self: if I ever run performance combat, a monster whose CR all by itself is higher than APL will not count as "1" for purposes of outnumbering. :P

RainyDayNinja and fellow Rockers - just a forward notice, from 14th December to 10th January I will be going on vacation back downunder to visit relatives and whatnot.

While I will retain net access throughout the trip, it's likely that my available online time and therefore post rate will drop down. If needed at any time, please feel free to DMPC Tobar to keep things rolling onwards.... that is if the gnolls don't just eat us at the end of this gig.

Well I think for the next one we need to really leverage off our ability to add pizzazz to the performance to help make up for songs that we seem to flub.

Some suggestions:
1. Crowd surfing?
2. Roger can Vanish, then reappear in a flurry of sparks (Chord of Shards)?
3. More toy piano destruction? - Jordon can always resummon another one.
4. Unseen Servant to do something cool?
5. Each of us blows a Fascinate performance for each song to make it easier to get some onside with us?
6. Onstage brawl between band members?
7. Gnome tossing?
8. Jordon can use Inspire Competence on the first song to try and get a good headstart (which I can double the bonus with Moment of Greatness)?

Yeah, I don't see why we haven't used Insire Competence yet.

Depending on how large this crowd is, we could each get a group of them with the Fascinate performance to create a massive magic-induced trip.

I think part of the issue is that we're playing songs that are a couple of minutes long - but our bardic performances only last for ~one minute.

I think if we give each of us a song 'introduction' / solo at the start then we can weasel the fascinate effect in under that. So Roger could start up a performance with a bass solo (getting the fascinate through that) - then we all pile in and reap the benefits for the song.

For gear, I think Jordon has taken a personal liking to the accordion, so he'll pick the fanciest masterwork accordion those polka-loving gnolls have. A hat of disguise for quicker costume changes, a necklace of fireballs type 1 because I like fireballs, a wand of CLW just in case, 200 gp worth of gold jewellery, to replace my silver bling, and a masterwork longspear. The rest will be taken as cash.

I won't be able to throw up Tobar's level up for a little while due to travelling, but he'll be grabbing a masterwork blowpipe and array of poisons from the stash - plus some utility stuff I need to think on.

Something I realized as I was putting Roger into Hero Lab, I never used versatile performance. Would you mind allowing me to swap around some things to use it?

Roger will take a partially used Wand of Heroism (20 charges, 2400gp), an empty Bag of holding type I (2500gp) a whip that catches his fancy (1gp) and 99 gold.

Hmm... tough question. I think if you could have it modified, perhaps bladed down the bottom, that'd be pretty bad@ss. Then, it also becomes easily enchanted as a weapon, as well.
