spot (1d20=16+2=18)

Keliwyn walks along side Inigo, purposefully and briskly. As they start to close the distance, he merely whispers to the priest, under his breath, "That's the one that got away last night." Without being too obvious, he doesn't let the thug leave his peripheral vision as he slides a dagger from it's sheath and palms it in an underhanded grip.

1d20=19+4=23

Just to keep it moving, I'll roll initiative for those who haven't.

Initiative Order:

Keliwyn 23
Darthen 22
Heather 18
Radavel 14
Jeorik 5

You'll find out your opponents when you engage. You have the surprise round.

Darthen, how (hard) are you opening the door? Heather, did you hang on to the Death disguise?

DM NPC Inigo, I still have some court hearings to attend to.

Thanks, Radavel. Will do.

Inigo is a tank. I'd have to work pretty hard to kill him.

The acme anvil comes to mind :D

Iñigo wrote:

How do you know about the dread anvil? Do you want Inigo to fire up Devotion to Law? I'll check back in my morning.

Sure. BTW, PsionicFox is back.

Darthen, how (hard) are you opening the door? Heather are you still in the death disguise or did you change it?

Billzabub: In response to your observation, Inigo's face assumes a snarl-like grin. He briefly calls upon Azmodeus to grant him success and protection, as he grips the haft of his mace and strides toward the loading dock.

On the dock the man has noticed you coming. Suddenly his eyes widen, "Giggles! its the guys from last ni..."

range 15' . Your play.

Can he tell if the door is in better shape than the rest of the building or is it just as ramshackle? That will determine how hard he will put his boot on it. Ramshackle = a good swift kick near the locking mechanism. Sturdy looking door = a nice jog up, get a little air, as he slams hit boot into it.

Watch the door open as soon as he takes a flying kick at it.

Lamm has not wasted any more money maintaining the door than he has the exterior. I was kind of interested if you would try turning the knob first.

The door bursts open, surprising the man behind the desk 8' from the door. He stands up quickly, hands in his pockets. "What do you mean by this? What do you want?" He is wearing a long frock coat with ornate chasing on the lapels and cuffs. The shoulders and breasts of the coat are worn and shiny from constant brushing. His gold and grey hair is drawn back tightly from his sneering face.

Begin the surprise round now. Everyone gets 1 action. Then if you go before your nearest opponent post your first round actions.

Initiative Order:

Keliwyn 23
Darthen 22
Heather 18
Giggles (loading dock) 19
Yargin (front door) 16
Mel (loading dock) 14 +
Radavel 14 -
Jeorik 5

I am going to post Darthens actions to help speed things up. I hope it is ok.

As soon as his foot hits the door he realizes Lamm wasn't expecting any trouble at his warehouse. The flimsy door flexes for a brief second as it flies open hitting the wall behind it. It only takes a brief second for Darthen's eyes to adjust interiors light source. As they do a man stands up from behind his desk. Darthen answers the mans question with one word. "Lamm" As the word leaves his sneering lips he strides forward 5-foot step and swings his short sword in a downward arc towards the mans should.

direct The man tries to step backwards to dodge the blow, but his chair hinders him. Darthen's sword connects with his shoulder. The man shreiks in pain and screams in panic. "I'm not Lamm! Stop! Giggles!"

(Male Human Fighter 3/ Paladin 2)

Jeorik enters the room directly behind Darthen.

He brings his spear to bear on the man, but cannot bring himself to attack without offering a chance to surrender.

"Where is this Lamm?" barks Jeorik, "Surrender and make it easy on yourself!"

Ready an action to attack if the man makes a threatening move.

mittean, where are you? Her view obstructed by the two men in front of her, Heather waits.

"Lamm, who? I've no idea what you're talking about!" The man shuffles backward against the far wall.

busy weekend, I'll try to get interior maps out to you all tonight.

On the loading dock, a throwing knife appears as by magic in the man's right hand.

Billzabub, Keliwyn is more or less in charge out here until Radavel gets back. Tell me what you want done, he'll do it as far as I see consistent with his character.

Guys, my boss is on vacation this week. I'll be busier at work than normal so my posting will slow down. I'll try to catch up in the evenings.

Reading up. Expect a post from me tonight.

Had trouble modelling the interior last night. We'll use squares for now. From North to south columns are labelled A-M. From west to east rows 1-17.

Column 1 is in the street. The loading dock, A2-C11. The double doors into the building are in columns 3 and 4 between rows C and D. The door are propped open, but the cart in front of them will restrict movement somewhat. No charges into the building, it takes an extra square of movement to get by the cart and in. The front door is in opens. Mel stands just outside the building, behind the cart. You can't see much in the shadws behind him.

The front door opens onto a 15x20 room. (H2-J5) I3 is occupied by a large solid desk. There are doors in H4, I3 and in the far wall in H5 and I5. "Not Lamm" has retreated to H5.

Still waiting on surprise round actions from Kel and Ini.

Darth, Jeo, and Heather may post for round 1.

Still planning on finishing the architectural model.

Inigo activates Law Devotion as soon as he sees an enemy to improve his AC.

The desk is at I3, I take it the door is actually H4 and H3, right? Which door did Darthen kick open?

As the man takes a step back Darthen sneers, "It looks like your girl Giggles isn't coming to save you. You can leave, but I will leave it up to you to decide in how many pieces it will be. Now be quick about it. Where is Lamm. You have only one chance." As he speaks he moves up until he is next to the man while weaving his sword in deadly looking patterns. I believe that should put me at H4.

Without breaking stride, Keliwyn throws his dagger at the thug holding one of his own.

1d20=7+4=11, 1d4=2=1=3

The elf and the priest move as quickly as possible to close the distance.

Order:

Keliwyn 23
Darthen 22
Giggles (loading dock) 19
Heather 18
Yargin (front door) 16
Mel (loading dock) 14 +
Inigo 14 -
Jeorik 5

Round 1. Keliwyn and Darthen you're up. Heather may post too. Inigo and Jeorik will probably want to wait until after the villians, but you may post contingency plans if you like.

The thug ducks behind the cart to avoid Keliwyn's throw, but his own opportunity to throw is ruined.

On the loading dock: the cart will provide a cover bonus of -4 for both you and the thug until you can get around it.

Darthen's post above is his 1st round action.

Cool. I had thought of it as the conclusion of his surprise round, but shamless opportunist that I am I will accept your well-meant honesty and punish you for it. :)

The door to Darthen's left crashes open, slamming into the man's shoulder. Through the doorway you can see a hulking leather-clad half-orc carrying a huge flail.

Enter the girlfriend. Giggles is in G4. Darthen you can make a strength check v 16 to keep the door closed or go with its flow. If you vacate the square Giggles steps into H4.

Ouch! My backup is behind me, right? Guys?

Str Check (1d20=11)

[ooc]No go on the str check.

The door in front of Darthen flies open with incredible speed. Quicker than he can react to it. As the door slams into his shoulder he involuntarily steps back. A huge half-orc takes up the entire doorway. His looks over Darthen and a his lips turn into a grin framing large yellow-brown teeth that could easily pass for tusks.

Darthen takes a moment to rub his shoulder and stretch it out. With a wicked grin he says, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."

Still here. :) Just waiting on Heather to post before I act.

Don't wait on Heather. When was mittean's last post? If he shows up fine, if not I'll DM-NPC her action last this round.

(Male Human Fighter 3/ Paladin 2)

Jeorik lowers his spear and charges at the newcomer. His aim is not good. and the spear misses.

Charging with long spear: (1d20+3+2=10)

Keliwyn & Inigo split to move around each side of the wagon, and attempt to close on the thug trying to take cover behind it. The elf gets there first, and he takes a swing with his scimitar.

1d20=11+1=12, 1d6=5+1=6

If Inigo can move fast enough to set up flanking for Keliwyn's attack, add the +2 to hit and 1d6=1sneak attack damage.

Of course it is a great phrase. The great Mark Twain coined it. :)

Activating law devotion, moving to flank/

Billzabub:

Spoiler:
Keliwyn gets a couple of bonuses during the actual combat with Lamm. Any dexterity modified roll +2, and +1 Dodge Bonus to AC

Round 1 Loading dock: Keliwyn suceeds in flanking the thug, but his strike glances off the cart. Seeing Inigo begin to round the cart. The thug retreats to the east inside the building, picking up a mace leaning against the wall by the door as he goes.

thug moves to d6. He may be attacked from D5 normally. A trough provides cover, -4 to attacks made from E5. Inigo its only 30' to D3. You have more movement or an action left. Keliwyn, Inigo has to get there for you to get the flanking bonus. Since the thug went before him, I just took your roll as a normal attack instead of dropping your initiative to 14 and the thug still moving away.

Inside the loading dock is a 20x30 room. The stench of rotten fish is terrible in here, enough to make you gasp and wretch slightly. The source of the smell is the trough in the southeast corner. It is full of rancid fish. Water dripping from the tank has covered much of the floor with a thin greasy puddle. Three children with pitchforks stand near the tank. Beyond the children is the open door between G/H4 Giggles stands in H4 with his back to you. Another door is behind the thug, who stands ready with mace and dagger, shouting at the children to attack you. The children stand momentarily motionless, trying to decide what to do.

Round 1 Front room: Darthen, You are pushed to I4. Giggles moves into H4. BTW the Twain quote was good, but I really liked your description of Giggles.

The half-orc uses the door and his bulk to lever Darthen from in front of the frock-coated man. Jeorik steps in to take advantage of the half-orc's distraction, but his spear point dips, sliding below the half-orcs arm and piercing into the door. Giggles seems amused by Darthens dislodgement and Jeorik's missed blow. He titters.

The frock coated man smiles at Giggles arrival and taking advantage of Darthen's momentary imbalance pulls out a wand from one pocket. "Thought to get the drop on Yargin Balko, did you? This will show you! Urra!" A stream of acid erupts from the wand towards Darthen, but hits the swinging door. It begins to smoke with a sizzling sound.

Loud barking can be heard from further inside the building.

Inigo has a partial action left for round 1. Heather ? Keliwyn and Darthen, if you would kickoff round 2 please...

Inigo shouts, "Surrender miscreants!"

He then moves after the nearest target.

After rubbing his should Darthen takes a second to crack his neck. Gripping his buckler firmly he moves into an offensive stance. As he swings his blade high he fients and brings the short sword horizontal, aiming for the brutes exposed midsection. As the blade digs in he can feel the edge glance off the half-orcs ribs. Just as quickly as he strikes he assumes his defensive stance ready to parry or block his opponents blows. The confident look on Giggles face quickly turns to burning rage. With a sneer on his lips Darthen says, "Yargin, I hope you didn't have any dinner plans with your date tonight. Looks like she won't be making it."

Attack (1d20 4=23)

crit conf:

crit conf (1d20 4=18)

CrimsonDM wrote:

I try, but face to face I am to slow to come up with those descriptive phrases. That is one reason I like PbP. :)

I don't know what Heather has but we need her to bring the pain. My dice normally don't roll that good so let's finish this off quickly.

delayed Heather as long as possible. She acts in round 2.
Round 2 Front Room:
Giggles staggers against the door under the force of Darthen's slash. Bright blood drips through the gash in the half-orc's flank. Giggles covers the wound with his hand, but the blood continues to run. He laughs loudly and counterattacks with the heavy flail, but his swing is wide and the flail crashes through the desktop.

Heather steps through the doors and to one side. Throwing her arms wide in welcome she chants while gazing at the big half-orc. tries charm person on Giggles. This could be ugly. The half-orcs fierce visage softens. "Wait, " she calls out. "Stop fighting." The half-orc does not move, but still stands ready for combat.

Yargin can't see through the door, but the fact that Giggles has stopped swinging tells him all he needs to know. He opens the door behind him and slips through it. The barking is much louder now.

Jeorik, you're up for round 2. Anyone, if mittean(Heather) doesn't post in round 3, would one of you run Heather. The charm is a big conflict of interest for me as DM.

Loading Area: End Round 1.

Inigo pursues the thug from last night (Mel) That will leave Inigo in D5.

Loading area Round 2. Keliwyn you're up.

(Male Human Fighter 3/ Paladin 2)

Spear attack: (1d20+3=12)

Jeorik once more tries to spear the half-orc but attacking around Darthen seems to be affecting his aim.

Sorry, Wicht, I may not have been clear. Giggles has been charmed. You nay revise your action.

Okay

Dropping his spear, Jeorik draws his sword and moves to follow Yargin through the door.

Jeorik Vandor wrote:

Sorry again. Drawing his sword, Jeorik weaves between Giggles, Darthen and the desk. He enters a 5 foot wide, 10' long hallway. begin in I2, end in H6 At the east end, Yargin is backing through a door, stumbling slightly as a big hound wiggles around him barking and snarling as it luges toward you. he's still in H7. I'll give you an attack of opportunity against the target of your choice at the beginning of round 3.

Keliwyn quickly moves to flank the thug with Inigo. Grinning wildly, he growls, "Remember me?" before swinging with his scimitar.

1d20=9+1+2-4=8

Radavel, round 2 actions?

Keliwyn slashes hard, but can't quite reach the thug over the trough of fishy swill.

The thug for his part is hampered by the wall and trough. His attacks are easily parried by Inigo.

Something hits the wall beside Inigo and the tank beside Keliwyn. Glancing over your shoulders you see that the three kids have taken the thug's orders and are half-heartedly trying to spear you with the pitchforks.

Atk; Dmg (1d20+1=17, 1d8+1=9)

"Ho! Miscreant! I am your judge!" Shouts Inigo as he brings down his mace.

Iñigo wrote:

Atk; Dmg (1d20+1=17, 1d8+1=9)

Iñigo's overhead swing beats down the thug's deflecting mace and crashes into the man's skull. He drops like a stone.

Iñigo and Keliwyn find themselves in control of the loading area. Without the thug to spur them on, the children retreat toward the northeast corner. One drops the pitchfork and begins to cry.

Round 3 begins. Darthen, Keliwyn, you're up. Jeorik you have an AoO. Oh, and someone tell me what Heather wants to do with the tittering half-orc bruiser.
Iñigo and Keliwyn : you've got a door behind Mel. A door to the front room with a big half-orc standing in it. He's looking into the front room. And three possible combatant children.

Front room crew: Jeorik's in the hall with Yargin on the run and a dog joining the fray. There's Giggles and there's 2 other doors to check. Listen DC 12:

Spoiler:
A thumping comes from behind the eastern door.

Darthen gives a quick look back at Heather, "Mighty fine lass. Does this brute have to listen to you now? If so send him down the hall past Jeorik and let him tangle with them first. I will keep behind him in case the charm breaks."

Delay until after Heather. She needs to win an opposed charisma check to give him an order.

Charisma check (1d20+3=8)

If she fails her check, Darthen will strike him down, then move down the hall with Jeorik.

Attack; Damage (1d20+4=19, 1d6=4)

Man what a waste of a great roll.

If she beats his score, then Darthen will stay behind Giggles to take his place if he falls or to bring him down.

As for Heather; She has already cast her three 1st level spells, charm person, and disguise self twice (once for the scary thing and the other to turn into a rough sailor dude). So for now she will just stick to the back and delay for now. After we are done at the warehouse the first stop will be to get her a sling.

Oh I didn't even realize there was a listen check. Hold on while I roll....Listen check. Add 2 against humans. (1d20+8=12)

"Step back away from that door lass. There is something behind it. My guess is another dog. Keep to the plan and get this oaf down the hall. Jeorik could use the help. I will be close in case whatever it is gets through."

The plan is still the same as above.

(Male Human Fighter 3/ Paladin 2)

Remembering the magical attack just moments earlier, Jeorik decides to focus first on the fleeing man.

He swings his sword, trying to aim for the shoulder.

Attacking with a sword: (1d20+3=20)
Damage: (1d8+3=9)

As has recently been pointed out elsewhere, charm person is not mind control - it won't necessarily make a person attack old friends. I would suggest Heather suggests that the half orc run to Old Korvosa to see if Heather left her other cloak in a bar.

Round 3 Order: after Darthen's will.

Keliwyn 23
Heather 18+
Giggles (hallway) 17+
Darthen 17-

Yargin (hallway) 16
Mel -- deceased
Inigo 14 -
Dog 10
Jeorik 5

With the combat in the hallway: Jeorik's AoO is unhindered. If you want Giggles to push past Jeorik, their regular attacks will be at -4. Otherwise Jeorik is still point man.

Yargin is shouting for "Blue", "Hookshanks", and "Gaedren" in his reedy voice.

Cross-posted.

Jeorik's swing connects with Yargin's upper left arm, biting deep through skin and muscle, stopping when it hits the bone. Yargin drops his wand and clutches his shoulder. Blood streams through his fingers as he trips back over the dog, falling into the room beyond. The dog snaps at Yargin as it tries to regain its feet.

Jeorik's arm is grabbed from behind, a heavy shoulder pushes him to the wall. "If you weren't with her, I'd gut you. Heteehee." The tittering giggle contrasts weirdly with the half-orc's bass voice.
"She said stop fighting." The half-orc attempts to push past, roaring, "Yargin its OK. One of them's a friend."

Wicht, your option to let him go first or stay in the lead. Or maybe Darthen decides he's more trouble than help.

Invisible castle hates me. My best combat roll against you guys was Yargin's acid attack that hit the door. Not a single roll above 10.
