A crease goes across his handsome brow, there's a small tick to his eyes as he replies; "Not as such, I can defend myself. Offensively, I slacked off in my fencing lessons." He remembers back to his harsh tutors, cold courtyards and the much more appealing Library of his education.

Nicola gently touches Varlis' shoulder as the ranger searches the corpse, sending a wash of healing through the man like a draught of cold ale. 24 points of healing.

"Are we ready to proceed... carefully," Nicola murmurs, "Maybe follow your missiles, Sir Varlis?"

Varlis grips the girl as he feels the rushing sensation knitting his shoulder and muscle back back to rude health.

"Well done by the way, your shots were excellent and true." The mage compliments Varlis sincerely as he moves towards the back of the party as they quietly progress down the hallway illuminated by Nicola's orison.

In case of ambush. Varlis swops back to his greatsword and slides the bow over one shoulder, "how long will my bow work against these shapeshifters, that spell is the real difference. Most of my arrows wouldn't even hurt it without Cayden's blessing. You don't have another inside you do you? For the big girl."

He steps onwards carefully.

Just checking to see where we are with that align weapon's duration. Cats grace lasts minutes so that may be good for a little while yet. BTW Varlis' perception check for whenever its needed 1d20 + 14 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 14 + 4 = 24


Survivor's Salvation

Twenty feet of progress brings you to the sharp left turn in the tunnel where the vulture-shasa originally stood. There are three bedrolls and a small amount of assorted mundane gear here.

Align weapon is also minutes in duration. It's still active. Depending on how soon the next encounter is, it may be active or not. I asked for 2 rolls, FW.

But there's really not much more. We'll want to be all healed up before we find the mistress of this place, just in case."

Knowing time is of the essence Phil chivvies the others along, though at the back of his mind the 3rd bedroll is calling to him - just in case they didn't all sleep in the same area.


Survivor's Salvation

A short distance past the left hand turn, the tunnel is blocked by a double door.

Opening the doors, you see two statues, each depicting a tiger-headed man, standing in alcoves to either side of the doors. Their arms are wide, as if to usher visitors forward through a narrow gap into the room beyond. Two alcoves adorn either side of that otherwise empty room. In one alcove, a long lever with an ebony handle protrudes from the wall.

From their location by the double doors Varlis and Nicola notice a gap in the floor, walls, and ceiling in the narrow gap between the two rooms.

Found a few minutes.

Varlis scans the room for signs of danger and then returns downwards to examine that gap.

"Could be a trap? But I am no expert. Can you tell if there is magic hereabouts or anything else for me to be concerned of?"

"Certainly." Phillipe replies looking apprehensively at the lever and to the gap in the room edges.

Cast Detect Magic

"Although it could be a simple incantation or cleansing cantrip that is used to obfuscate the senses - equally you can hide mystic aura's." He expounds nervously at the potential lethality of the vestibule. "The alcoves should be safe, but it could be that the floors and ceiling collapse - maybe I can levitate us across there?"


Survivor's Salvation

The gap is small, no more than an inch or a couple cm. There is no gap between ceiling and walls. No magic in these two rooms.

Varlis:
I need to retcon one little thing.

Varlis glances back at the vulture rakshasa's body splayed out on the floor and shivers. He didn't realize it in the rush of battle, but now he recalls that sword bit cold.

Varlis did search the corpse but I'm not sure that he got a rundown of what the vulture had, including the sword. If its not from the sword then he will ask the priest to take a look at the cold wounds. Phillipe's detect magic may nudge us about the blade since I doubt we would have left it behind.

"Maybe a shutter or cutter will come down between us."

Just need to resolve summat with TT before stepping forward.

"It may be better to work this through mechanically - for we have got past the labyrinth keepers. We roll a marble across the floor in case anything is attracted to the motion. Then cast a rope across the floor if it's based upon weight?" Phillipê speculates before checking to see if anyone has rope.

Varlis:
Not much gear on the vulturasha. Slightly deformed breastplate so that it could accommodate his backwardity. A few coins, some dice and the greatsword. When I say it 'bit cold', I mean Varlis took cold damage. I added it to the damage roll against you, but neglected to tell you the cause for the extra d6. (although I did a bit of foreshadowing description before you engaged.) Sorry about that. I don't believe Philippe cast detect magic in the corner/room with the rakshasa. Now he's past it and looking down the passage into the next rooms.

In which case as last member of the party he'll see it in V's grasp. Good thinking, FW

When you cast detect magic into the two rooms with the gap, the sword that Varlis picked up from the vultursasha does have an aura. Sorry, I missed it before.

"There's some enchantment upon that vultures sword." Phillipé points out as he retrieves a cloudy marble from a soft leather pouch at his hip. "Shall I?" he asks, before he'll flick it across to room so that it skids with a professional motion.

"Acceptable." Phillipé nods as the glass orb skids across the surface; "Now to try with something sturdier, in case the trigger is a wire or light sensitive." He ponders, getting a length of silk rope from his backpack. Coiling up his muscles and grasping one end loosely whilst ensuring the weight of the rope won't impede the motion, Phillipé casts the rope into the room as far as possible.

The rope falls to the floor.

"If we step forwards quickly, then maybe the lever is the key to this gap. If you with the magic to get past goes last then no one can easily split our force of Three."

Varlis prepares to go on, but gives them time to come up with a better solution.

"Good idea, I could blink inside. But you are hopefully correct about the lever and that it's just used to drop a shutter - blocking this door." Phillipé replies placing the remains of his rope on the floor.

"Alright, I'll go first." Holding up a lantern in one hand he focuses intently upon the floor before him. With a sudden lurch he vanishes, materialising in the room before him under a shimmering aegis.

Shift: To teleport 15 foot into the room avoiding the threshold.

Nicola saunters forward to follow, but can't help hustling over the little gap.

"That was... odd." She keeps an eye on the opening, "So, where from here? Can we avoid pulling the lever to move forward?"

"Leave the lever and lets carry on," adds Varlis all business and work.

There is no where else to go, no other interesting feature to this small room. It is like the room was built for the lever.

"Perhaps we need to pull the lever to move along." She examines the gap again. "Ah! Yes, I think so!"

Nicola moves to the lever and gives it a good tug, switching it to the alternative position unless somebody stops her.

The big man rubs his face hard to relieve the constant stress a little but does not stop Nicola or say anything to the contrary. He unlimbers his bow and waits for the worst to happen on the balls of his feet.

"Lord Arkona owes us for this. Two dead and a fecking lever as well."

Nicola shakes her head solemnly at Varlis. "We don't know anyone is dead. Never give up hope... at least, not until the thing is proven. Who would have credited a drunken wastrel as having the stuff of godhood? Yet here's the evidence." Once the lever is pulled, she resumes her normal grip upon her rapier, holy symbol in her off-hand, pointedly brandishing Cayden's symbol at Varlis. "Have faith."

Nicola pulls the lever. There's a dull grind and the room jerks to the left. You're thrown off balance momentarily as the room rotates counterclockwise a quarter turn. The passage that you used to enter is temporarily blocked by solid stone, but another room is revealed as your room halts its revolution.

So your room rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise.

Trusting his sister as she enters the room surveys the situation and then uses the lever. Phillipé had never been much for faith, trusting upon what he can deduce and derive - thus he holds his breath and glances at the ceiling, in case of falling.

Stumbling a step as the room rotates, yet again when it reaches it's destination. The mage moves towards the centre of the room and touches where he judges the axis is.

"Interesting" he says softly to himself before his vision alights on the far room with caution, for anything nearby would have been alerted by the grinding noise. Producing a light he moves forward into the newly revealed room.

Nicola makes a satisfied little "hmph!" as the room twirls and slides into place, giving Phillipe a 'so there' look. She hurries to move in close behind her brother as he departs the rotating room, giving Varlis' shield a tap to light it almost absently as she passes.

The new room is oddly shaped. It is bare, aside from another lever and a door.

Investigating the new room reveals nothing extraordinary except a glowing rune upon the lever in the corner. There is no other magic here except the glowing rune.

Detect magic:
It's abjuration.

Spellcraft DC 26:
It's some kind of warding symbol or glyph of unknown provenance.

You passed the spellcraft check above, and speak Infernal:
It will trigger madness.

Primitive, but it shows room shape. North is up. You pulled the lever in E3 and the room rotated counterclockwise to reveal E8. Upper right hand corner of E8 is the aforementioned door. The lever in E8 is in the lower left hand corner.

"Madness you say, a glyph, well perhaps we can dispel or disrupt it. Or I could use my servant friend to pull the lever - unless we used something more mundane like a rope." He sighs enjoying the promise of the safer arcane & trying to take his mind away from their recent horrors.

Although he does glance cautiously at the doorway to the side & concedes she's correct that the door is a better direction with a simple tilt of his head. "Right behind you, Sis."

Varlis begins to tap around leaving the obvious for now.

Detect Magic

"I believe it's just on the warded lever." Phillipé says casting his vision around the room carefully. "Although that's Abjuration Magic and father never liked that - so my knowledge is very limited to the options. I think that exit door might prove a better bet, especially since the lever might just be used to summon the rotating vestibule."

The mage keeps his words to hushed tones as he gets ready to open the door, but awaits any results of secret door detection. His plan is to open the door so it swings towards himself & opens a 'firing range' for his companions.

The symbol/glyph is at the stronger end of moderate aura strength and is placed on the lever.

Illusion and trickery equals a paranoid ranger

Varlis stands twenty feet from the doorway and lines his bow up with a nod at Philippe.

Phillipé wraps his hand in the leather strap of his satchel, gently brushes the handle of the door - in case of any poisoned spikes upon it's length. He then checks his footing, making sure that there's no pressure plates. After ascertaining where the hinges are located and thus the swing of the leaf, the mage grasps the door and pulls/pushes it open - all whilst ensuring he's mostly out of the lines of sight and Varlis' firing arc.
