"He did say this was a maze and thus it might be that it's a merely a barrier to obfuscate and delineate. Though the information we gathered of the people here might be true, I wouldn't necessarily assume their complete allegiances." Phillipe says quietly.

"We need to act from a position of power, even if the reverse is true. Lord Arkona might be a corrupt individual, but we must rescue the Seneschal. Do we try negotiation? To one whom houses the evil rakhasa..."

Phillipe lets the others lead the way, for his eyes aren't sharp enough to spot traps or find the route through a labyrinth.

Survivor's Salvation

Onward? I imagine the marching order as Varlis, Nicola, Phil. Correct me if I'm wrong. Same light sources? Any special prep?

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Should have dedcucted 18 hit points for the failed save against the crocshasa. Maybe Nicola too?

"I could do with some healing. That bolt of fire burnt my arm bad."

Once that is resolved, Varlis starts off slowly then realsies that the rockfall put paid to all that. He swops to his sword and continues on down the tunnel.

"I have a bad feeling about this place. But lets do our best to stay alive, yes?"

F Human (Chelaxian) AC 21/15/17, HP 55/55, Init +3, Perception +11, F +6, R +6, W +9 Cleric 8 (Cayden) [Con -1]

Croc was evil, so only 9 damage to Nicola because of protection from evil. Do I hear anything through the rock wall? Any reply to the metallic tapping?

Nicola bows to Varlis. "Healing on tap, m'lord," she winks, pressing the little silver mug to her lips with a wave and murmur.

Channel to heal 4d6, 6/7 remain.

healing: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 4, 2) = 10

"Hmm. I feel better, but you still look a mite crispy, my friend," Nicola banters lightly, trying to keep Varlis' thoughts from his friends. She touches his arm, letting the healing power flow once again, "We must be in top condition before we continue."

burn inflict for cure light: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

"And I completely agree. Alive is good. I enjoy the aliveness." She restores the light spell on Varlis' shield as needed as they venture down the dark tunnel, giving her brother a quick hug as they set out.

I like the Varlis, Nicola, Phil marching order. If the corridor is wide enough, we may want to use a wedge shape to avoid things like that lightning attack. I think most of our spell effects were short-term. Do we have any remaining?

Survivor's Salvation

Sorry, Treppa. I spaced the reply on the tapping. The answer is that there is no response to Nicola's tapping. The rock is solid and thick.

The prayer is going to expire before you get anywhere else, but if you hurry align weapon will last a while.

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

As his sister lets Caydens' healing flow through them, he mumbles. "Thanks Sis, next round is on me. Maybe a light heal too." He holds out a wand, from his backpack. Moving up the the back of the group, he knows that he's a bit of a liability next to the pair of wise trackers.

"Speed is good, but lets try and get the drop on them. Maybe Sivit can be reasoned with - even if the Lady cannot." He mentions quietly as they move through the labyrinth; "Although we need to prepare before any conflict, that's my strength...." His mental cogs whir, helped by the constitutional.

A CLW from my wand would be appreciated Nicola, I'm 8 down.

Nicola hands the wand back to her brother after poking him with it once. "Don't be such a baby. It's only a flesh wound." She gives him a wink and grin as they set off down the tunnel.

The cleric is the only one to make the Reflex save? How weird is that?
Stealth: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Varlis should save but lets just say he isn't the luckiest character I have ever played.

The warrior soaks up the healing like a sponge and grips Nicola on the shoulder for the support as much as the health. The large warrior keeps ahead of the pair once Phillipe has been salved.

Perception check for the future 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18, et voila a bloody 4!

F Human (Chelaxian) AC 21/15/17, HP 55/55, Init +3, Perception +11, F +6, R +6, W +9 Cleric 8 (Cayden) [Con -1]

"Still hurt?" Nicola whispers to the ranger.

I can do more healing or use a wand if you're still down.

Survivor's Salvation

Settle the healing question as you will. To save a little time, I'll post this now.

The tunnel runs level with gentle oscillating curves that limit your line of sight, but don't alter the fact that you're moving in a more or less straight line.

After just a couple minutes walk,

Perception DC 22:
You realize that Nicola's lights aren't just illuminating the tunnel walls. There was a moving shadow on the wall ahead that the lights have now obscured. Shadow as in area of relatively lesser light. Not shadow as in cold outsiderly strength suckers.

DM stuff:

F Human (Chelaxian) AC 21/15/17, HP 55/55, Init +3, Perception +11, F +6, R +6, W +9 Cleric 8 (Cayden) [Con -1]

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

Did you see that? Nicola whispers to Varlis, tapping the ranger on the shoulder, It's gone now, but something ahead was casting a shadow.

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

Well I can only get to a 21, so nope, I didn't perceive anything.

Focussing and drawing power from the inscriptions of his ancestral spell tome, he starts a low enchantment. Then releases it upon Varlis; "Go forth with greater nimbleness."

Cast Cats Grace on Varlis

Survivor's Salvation

Beyond the bend, something clears its throat. "Raawk!" A seomwhat shrill voice says, "Nuudhala, is that you?"

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

Whispering very faintly so the noise won't carry; "It's the other guard, that the crocshasa talked about."

F Human (Chelaxian) AC 21/15/17, HP 55/55, Init +3, Perception +11, F +6, R +6, W +9 Cleric 8 (Cayden) [Con -1]

If Varlis really is at 52/70, I want to do more healing before we proceed.

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Varlis changes back to his bow and slips forwards with all the grace of a rakshasa. Ten foot from the shadows, Varlis stops, an arrow notched to his bow.

"Nuudhala told us we would see you here. I am Varlis sent by Lord Arkona to see you."

Stealth check to move up 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 14 + 2 + 4 = 21, Perception check when much closer 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32

Survivor's Salvation

Varlis' header is reading HP 70/70 on his last post, so I'm assuming he's all healed up. FW, if the header is wrong just say so and Treppa can retcon another cure spell or three.

"Come then. Show yourself and we'll talk like gentlemen."

Edging around the curve, Varlis sees a bald man, who has apparently donned his breastplate backwards. The man stands at a sharp turn in the tunnel. Gold glints from the boss at the center of the breastplate. Small patches of frost appear and fade on the bare great sword in his right hand. Drops of water trickling down the edges and runnel of the sword before dripping from the tip unto the floor.

20' to the man. The tunnel here is just over 5' wide, but widens out to about 10' with the introduction of the sharp turn.

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

"We have been sent by Lord Arkona to retrieve the Seneschal and to administer his authority to any that oppose. So stand aside." Phillipe says in a brusque naturally authoritative manner of one born to rule. However he's also stood near the back of the group.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Varlis is all healed up now. No need for more. Yet.

The hunter tries to decidd between sword and bow. Quickly he chooses to stick with the aligned bow and trust his instinct that this another trick and the true enemy is one of those 'shasas.

Survivor's Salvation

"Is it for cattle like you to command me? What did Nuudhala say to you when you met?"

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

Man, I'm dying to reply: "Ouch, ouch, please stop hurting me."

"She at least will acquiesce to Lady Melyia's requests, you'd prove wise to do the same - lest we have words." Phillipe adds darkly, knowing that these creatures respect power and authority. "You'd best show us to Sivit quickly."

Intimidate: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Survivor's Salvation

Maybe you should have used that line, DSX. Not sure about the reference to Lady Melyia, what were you getting at ?

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

Well I was implying that Nuudhala (which I was guessing was the original rakahasa) would follow Melyia (Lord Arkona's sibling?) and would take us to the Seneschal. Basically I since I couldn't see the others at the 'virtual table' I didn't necessarily want to start the fight.... However if it's inevitable, feel free to substitute the "Ouch" line ;)

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

"..or not," adds Varlis raising his bow on the arrogant man.

Survivor's Salvation

"Do not raise that bow, Varlis." The man croaks threateningly.

He refocuses on Philippe. "By what sign do I know you represent Lord Glorio?"

I was just amused. The "ouch, ouch" line would have been funny.

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

"Would we have come through his flower garden were we not in his trust?" Phillipe retorts with a hint of distain; "Now lead away, or just go away." He flicks his wrist, using all his high-born hauteur and commanding presence.

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

"Choose wisely, no one here deserves my respect," the bow is now trained on the man. "I will not risk lies from you so accept this."

Survivor's Salvation

As the bow rises, so does the sword. The man starts a quick step forward.

He's not going to stand for a bow pointing at him, even if he is "immune." Initiative time.

Varlis slowly raises his bow as he says, "give me room behind to backpedal."

Survivor's Salvation

Nicola gets the tie breaker.

The tunnel is rough cut and drawn a little over 5' wide on the map. I'll call it 5' wide and basically straight although the gentle curve described above makes ranged combat impossible at 60' or more range and provides cover from 40-60'. The 'man' is charging from 20' away from Varlis.

Init:

Nicola
Man
Philippe
Varlis

The mass align weapon is still up as is Cats Grace on Varlis. I think that's all.

Positions:

Philippe
Nicola
Varlis
20' of space
man, presumably Nuudhala's friend Vennashti

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Varlis has +2 to AC and Ref saves due to the cats grace

F Human (Chelaxian) AC 21/15/17, HP 55/55, Init +3, Perception +11, F +6, R +6, W +9 Cleric 8 (Cayden) [Con -1]

Nicola touches the ranger's shoulder as she withdraws to give him room.

Touch of good (1 round)(6/7 remain) +3 sacred bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws to touched creature. Retreat back 30', moving through Philippe's square on the way back (no threat).

Survivor's Salvation

The man covers the ground faster than Varlis can release a shot. As he charges in he raises the greatsword high and as he comes within reach he drives it toward Varlis' neck and collarbone.

Greatsword: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 16 + 2 = 36 .... damage: 2d6 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (1, 6) + 10 + (4) = 21

A cold shock floods Varlis as the weapon's tip creases his breastplate.

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

'Hmmm, we cannot have just one person in combat with that thing.' his thoughts turn to a wince as Varlis is heavily struck. Suddenly the mage feels very vulnerable, for he hasn't even his sparkling armour conjured - a fact he rectifies very quickly.

Standard Action: Cast Mage Armour.
Move Action: Draw Silvered MW Dagger
Swift: Shift to behind the creature - to give Varlis a flank.

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Gulp! and double gulp now that Phillipe is flanking when Varlis has his only piercing weapon in hand, his bow. gods I miss Emerion and his rapier right now.

"No, no no! get back behind me and I'll shoot it down!"

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Varlis steps back a pace and quickly draws three arrows aiming just above the gorget, he shoots with surprising rapidity. A blur.

Using +2 magic arrows and an aligned bow first shot 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 14 + 2 + 3 = 36, damage 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11, second shot 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 14 + 2 + 3 = 39, damage 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 2 = 12, third shot 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 2 + 3 = 18, damage 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10,

The first skims his throat but the second one does much better and digs in hard. The last just misses by a country mile, skittering down the tunnel.

Possible crit 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 14 + 2 + 3 = 33, damage 2d8 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (1, 6) + 8 + 4 = 19

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Hopefully that is 42 points of damage.

Survivor's Salvation

Well struck. You assessed the hits well, FW. Nicola is up.

"Aawk!" The man's rush forward is checked momentarily. His haughty expression dissolves into something else. "How!?"

When he raises his head and steps in to strike again fear fuels his attack.

F Human (Chelaxian) AC 21/15/17, HP 55/55, Init +3, Perception +11, F +6, R +6, W +9 Cleric 8 (Cayden) [Con -1]

Nicola waffles, not wanting to box bowman Varlis in with the rakshasha. She rushes forward, stopping short of Varlis, and blesses her companions.

Casting bless for +1 to allies. Moving up to 5' away from Varlis to give him room to step back.

Next round: If combat is continuing, burn invisibility purge for cure serious wounds on Varlis, then step back 5'
Cure: 3d8 + 8 ⇒ (6, 6, 4) + 8 = 24

Survivor's Salvation

With the fear comes loss of control. The man's face melts and narrows. His nose lengthens and hooks down. Varlis finds himself facing a vulture-headed fiend.

The great sword frantically rises and falls again as the bald seeks to end the bounty-hunter's life.

Greatsword: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21.... damage: 2d6 + 10 + 1d6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 10 + (4) = 24

Varlis should be gleaming, he's been so well buffed.

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Thank you dice gods for those rolls that way round. That gleaming may be sweat with only three of us in the fight.

Varlis continues with the assault, stepping back five feet again to allow room for the attacks. Now it is the face, aiming for that hooked nose and eyes.

Manyshot with aligned weapon and normal arrows 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 14 + 2 = 32, damage 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11, 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 14 + 2 = 33, damage 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11, 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 14 + 2 = 19, damage 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11, 22 damage.

Survivor's Salvation

The bird man scrabbles with hooked fingers at the arrows in his eye and mouth. He drops on his knees and quickly topples. His head comes to rest between Varlis' feet.

Yeah. When I typed out those rolls, the possibility of double crits sending you straight to the Boneyard ghosted through my mind. Unlikely, but ...

End of combat. Can I get 2 perception checks apiece please?

Nicola examines Varlis' injuries. "Phil, get over here and help." As she leans near the ranger, she whispers, "Varlis, where did your arrows land? I can't see them." She prepares a healing spell for the injured man, listening carefully for any movement besides their own.

Can I use the cure serious from above that was superseded by end of combat, or shall I cast/roll again?

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Glancing down the passage behind him, Phillipé moves slowly back towards the group. "Sorry about bouncing past you, but I wanted to ensure I wasn't in the way & that he didn't escape..." He explains himself softly as to not carry too far down the passage.
