Survivor's Salvation

Nicola is up. Wellard, can you confirm Heather's state?

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Varlis looks around and sees the sudden danger for Heather. Not trusting to anyone else, he quickly aims and fires again and again into the creature's body. But he foregoes his deadly precision concentrating on accuracy instead.

"There's somebody over there, calling these things or egging them on or something," she cries, pointing to her southeast (roughly in the direction of B8).

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

With deft fingers, Philippé reaches into the black leather pouch at his side and grasps the sand within. Using a single fluid movement he casts it in the direction his sister indicated, whilst his voice chants a softly completing the conjuration of the mornings learning.

Rather than falling short the mica is propelled upon the mystic ether and glistens in the dancing lights - creating a kaleidoscope of colours. A vivid rainbow explodes over the area his sister indicated.

Survivor's Salvation

Posting for Emerion, to get things moving again. Sorry for the terseness. Text was better before the board monster ate my first attempt.

Emerion stop thrusts the duller one as it strikes, and it dies biting on his blade. The brighter one latches onto his thigh. He stabs desperately at its neck and draws blood.

From across the room comes a furious shout commingled with a thunderclap. Lightning arcs across the room toward Philippe and Varlis. In its wake stands a man clad in a short gown. Or not a man. His neck is three times too long and topped with a serpentine head. His bowed legs bend backwards.

Survivor's Salvation

Nicola:
Snake-headed man, backwards limbs, the tiger-headed statues and Vudrani atmosphere. You realize that you are almost certainly facing one of Vudran's fabled avatars of evil, a Rakshasa.

Arrogant twisters of men and reality. Resistant to magic, invulnerable to normal weapons. They see themselves almost as gods.

Only the blessing of the gods combined with the arm of man can they be defeated.

Nicola's eyes go wide as the serpent-headed man appears. "Evil! Rakshasa! Cayden aid us in this fight or we shall surely die!" After kissing her holy symbol, she flings her arms wide, as if showering her allies with sand. But it's Cayden's power she grants them, not dry dust.

Casting blessing of fervor on all party members. For seven rounds, everyone can make the choice of one of these actions on their turn:
* Increase its speed by 30 feet.
* Stand up as a swift action without provoking an attack of opportunity.
* Make one extra attack as part of a full attack action, using its highest base attack bonus.
* Gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls and a +2 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves.
* Cast a single spell of 2nd level or lower as if it were an enlarged, extended, silent, or still spell.

I'm not sure where the Rakshasa is, but if it's within 30', Nicola would move in with her rapier on the opposite side from the party, if possible, to flank and harry the monster.

Emerion's up. I'll post for him tonight if we don't hear from Dabbler before then.

Philippe's magic missiles fracture into nothingness as they strike. The snakes neck winds out and to the right before twisting down to look at its unharmed chest. Then it looks up at Philippe and hisses a sort of chuckle.

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

Yep, that's what Phillipe is taking this turn. Since the Meta magic doesn't help his Magic Missile.

Survivor's Salvation

Knowledge check are free actions unless you're using a library. Go read that spoiler, Philippe!

FW, are you planning on switching to melee? Will enlarged arrows change back to normal size when released?

Map, not updated. Snakes are dead. Rakshasa in B8. Nicola in B9. Emerion ends up in B7 after this move...

Emerion shakes his leg free of the charred corpse and wheels toward the new threat. Rapier stretched forward as an extension of his arm, he dashes forward to skewer the snake-man.

Em's Rapier attacks:
+2 keen Mithral Rapier (+16/+11 to hit, 1d6+6 damage, +1d6 if defensive, +1d6 sneak attack, 15-18/x2);

Rapier, Charge, Fervor, Sneak: 1d20 + 16 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 16 + 2 + 2 = 32 .... damage: 1d6 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 6 + (2) = 13

The blade stabs through the Rakshasa's chest and grounds on the wall behind him. That hissing chuckle comes from his mouth and even as Emerion pulls back the blade to stab again, the snake-man lunges forward, unharmed. Quicker than Emerion's recoil, the snakehead snaps for his throat, one hand claws at Emerion's wrist to hold his sword down while the other hands slashes with a broad oddly bent dagger.

Rakshasa attacks:

Bite: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 .... damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Claw: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 .... damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Kukri: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29 .... damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 (15-20)
Kukri: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 .... damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Emerion takes 8 hp of damage. 21 total for him in this combat.

And now you can pigpile the Rakshasa, or flee for your lives. If I were you I'd wait to hear what Phil has to say.

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

Philippé remembers why the cat-headed creatures are so feared in the Cheliax empire; "Be careful for they can only be hurt by those divine weapons or such that have been touched by the Gods. Of course massive damage may still tickle them."

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Varlis heads for the creature, drawing his greatsword on the move and drinking a potion of cats grace from his handy haversack.

All movement this round. Dex/Reflex saves go up by 2, should counteract any enlarge. TT, you're right, arrows shrink unless fired from a gravity bow.

Blessing of fervor +2 dodge to AC.
Move to B6 (I think that's right behind Emerion). Nicola needs to be proximate for now.

From behind her human shield, she murmurs a prayer and reaches out to touch his already magical rapier. "Cayden's blessing on this weapon; may it be used for good. Defend thyself and I shall heal you momentarily. All of you, gather near me if you would have Cayden's protection."

Cast align weapon on Emerion's rapier, aligning it for good.

Survivor's Salvation

The party moves in on the strange creature. After Nicola bolsters the others by Cayden's power, the thing hisses its laughter again. While it tries to sidestep Emerion's rapier it says, "My spirit was old when the drunk stumbled into godhood, but he'll be dead and forgotten while I am still young."

Black Tentacles:
School conjuration (creation); Level sorcerer/wizard 4

Casting Time 1 standard action

Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)

Area 20-ft.-radius spread

Duration 1 round/level (D)

Saving Throw: none; Spell Resistance: no

This spell causes a field of rubbery black tentacles to appear, burrowing up from the floor and reaching for any creature in the area.

Every creature within the area of the spell is the target of a combat maneuver check made to grapple each round at the beginning of your turn, including the round that black tentacles is cast. Creatures that enter the area of effect are also automatically attacked. The tentacles do not provoke attacks of opportunity. When determining the tentacles' CMB, the tentacles use your caster level as their base attack bonus and receive a +4 bonus due to their Strength and a +1 size bonus. Roll only once for the entire spell effect each round and apply the result to all creatures in the area of effect.

If the tentacles succeed in grappling a foe, that foe takes 1d6+4 points of damage and gains the grappled condition. Grappled opponents cannot move without first breaking the grapple. All other movement is prohibited unless the creature breaks the grapple first. The black tentacles spell receives a +5 bonus on grapple checks made against opponents it is already grappling, but cannot move foes or pin foes. Each round that black tentacles succeeds on a grapple check, it deals an additional 1d6+4 points of damage. The CMD of black tentacles, for the purposes of escaping the grapple, is equal to 10 + its CMB.

The tentacles created by this spell cannot be damaged, but they can be dispelled as normal. The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the tentacles last.

Survivor's Salvation

Sorry guys, jet lag and work are kicking my butt. Dabbler's had plenty of time to post Emerion, so I'll post instead to get this moving again.

Wellard, are the sparkling rays are your modified burning hands? And 24 will pass its SR. I'll roll 5d4 for damage. Let me know if you had another spell in mind.

Phil, I assume you positioned the tentacles so that only the rakshasa is affected and I don't need to make CMD checks against Em and Varlis. This means that the Rakshasa could step free of the tentacles if it can find space.

Emerion's newly enhanced rapier darts forward toward the rakshasa's heart. The rakshasa flinches and the blade rips into its shoulder, cutting deep and drawing blood. A long hissss of pain follows immediately.

Varlis, the problem is one of AC so far. Not DR. And how are you using Nicola's blessing of fervor this round. Hint -- it won't put those to hit rolls over the top.

Hemmed in by both Varlis and Emerion, back against the wall, the creature trades slashes, strikes and parries with the two fighters.

Phil, the rakshasa stayed in the square. Tentacles failed grapple check. And no, he is not quick healing the damage done.

Hmmm. Guess I'm DMPCing Em and Heather....Oh well.

Heather intones the words of a spell that you've seldom heard her use. As she speaks her words drag more and more slowly from her mouth and the rakshasa seems to slow down too.

Haste for everyone! Extra actions! Bonuses! Boy I am glad Wellard doesn't use this more often.

Renewed by Nicola and supercharged by Heather, Emerion flicks his rapier with near lightning speed, looking for weaknesses in his foe's defenses. But none of his attacks draws blood.

For it's part, the Rakshasa turns its attacks on Varlis, ignoring the ineffectual rapier wielder. With Cayden's aid Varlis deflects two attacks from the bent dagger that might have gutted him. A claw rips a jagged cut in the man's cheek however.

Whoops, edit coming up.

"Friends, we stand and fight. Take this creature down - burn her with your power and strength. Crush the creature, destroy." He invokes the powerful words, trying to motivate and enrage Emerion and the enlarged Varlis.

The noble moves as required to keep away from the creature, but enflame the spirits of his companions.

So Burning Bonded Item to cast Rage (Extended)
+2 Str & Con to Emerion & Varlis for 14 rounds, & +1 Will Save (morale) but -2AC. The Enlarge (14 minutes) gives Varlis +2 Str (that stacks) but -1AC & Reflex.
And Haste gives +1 attack (at highest Base Attack), +1AC & Reflex.
Blessing of Fervo(u)r: Can get a +1 (stackable) AC & Reflex & +2 to hit. (Or a movement increase).

Male Human Wizard/8, AC18/13/15, Hp 34/36, F+5,R+5,W+8, Init.+2, Perc +1, Sense Motive +1

Thus from these buffs, Emerion has an extra attack, +3 to hit, +1AC, +1 Reflex, +1 Will & +1 damage.
Varlis will get an extra attack, +4 to hit, no AC alteration, +1 Reflex, +1 Will & +2 damage.

(And there CMB/CMD is a bit of a mess :P )

The Exchange

Apologies I should have posted earlier but I got caught in the chats about Wellard and Dabbler, mea culpa as they used to say. Will post in a while, have to fetch daughter from school.

Male Human Ranger 8, AC23/14/19, Hp 70/70, F+8,R+10,W+4, Init.+6, Perc +14, Sense Motive +11

Size has issues for Varlis, it shouldn't matter but it does. Enlarge gives +1 to hit (str) -1 to hit (size), -2 AC (dex and size) and -1 Ref (dex) but the big bonus is 3d6 damage instead of 2d6 and usually reach.
Rage gives +2 Str/Con and -2 AC.
Haste gives +1 attack, +1AC and +1 Ref.
Blessing of Fervour gives +1 to hit this round.
Cats Grace gives +2 AC and Ref (dex)
The result is that Varlis attacks +15/15/10 3d6+9, AC24, Ref +11

Varlis grows before the eyes of the snake headed beast and his sword grows too. With a murderous growl he swings at the waist of the rakshasa, hoping to cleave the creature in two before it can react. However he does take the time to set up a flank with Emerion.

Some hope the way I am rolling in all my games. 1d20 + 15 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 15 + 2 = 34, damage 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (5, 5, 6) + 9 = 25, 1d20 + 15 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 15 + 2 = 31, damage 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 6, 5) + 9 = 24, 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 10 + 2 = 23, damage 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 2, 2) + 9 = 19

Nicola hastily intones another prayer, touching Varlis as he moves to flank the creature, then tapping Emerion, Heather, her brother, and herself. "I pray this creature is evil!"

Casting protection from evil, communal which gives 7 minutes of pfe divided amongst us in 1 minute intervals. I think that means we each get a minute and burn the other two, but oh well.
Staying put behind Emerion and maintaining +2 to AC.
The big deal for the party: if the rakshasa is evil, +2 deflection to AC and +2 resistance to saves. Does not stack with existing similar bonuses (like ring of protection or cloak of resistance).

Protection from Evil:

First, the subject gains a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves. Both these bonuses apply against attacks made or effects created by evil creatures.

Second, the subject immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command, and dominate person. This saving throw is made with a +2 morale bonus, using the same DC as the original effect. If successful, such effects are suppressed for the duration of this spell. The effects resume when the duration of this spell expires. While under the effects of this spell, the target is immune to any new attempts to possess or exercise mental control over the target. This spell does not expel a controlling life force (such as a ghost or spellcaster using magic jar), but it does prevent them from controlling the target. This second effect only functions against spells and effects created by evil creatures or objects, subject to GM discretion.

Third, the spell prevents bodily contact by evil summoned creatures. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. Summoned creatures that are not evil are immune to this effect. The protection against contact by summoned creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature. Spell resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature.

Varlis' AC is 26 now

Gah, I realized I can extend pfe, c after my edit time expired. Can I do that and drop the +2 to AC from fervor? That gives us 2 minutes each of protection from evil.

Survivor's Salvation

Many thanks for the buff status update, DSX. ** Sorry I've been away. I really thought I'd be able to get to a keyboard over the weekend. **Nicola, you may take the extension to protection form evil instead of the AC boost.

Larger, stronger, Varlis cuts the snake man twice with his great sword. The blade opens rents in the rakshasa's arm and thigh and the rakshasa barely evades the bounty-hunter's third attack. Despite the pain and blood loss, the snake-man continues to fight.

Emerion redoubles his effort also and his rapier darts at the rakshasa's chest again and again.

Rapier, Fervor, Haste, Rage: 1d20 + 16 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 16 + 2 + 1 = 35.... damage: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14
Rapier, Fervor, Rage: 1d20 + 16 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 16 + 2 + 1 = 39.... damage: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 2 = 12
Rapier, Fervor, Rage: 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 11 + 2 + 1 = 24.... damage:1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 2 = 11

The tentacles continue to grasp at the snake-man, trying to pull and rend. Suddenly realized that I didn't check the tentacles grapple last round. I will roll double this round to make it up.

Black tentacles 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 Rakshasa not grappled.
Black tentacles 2: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27Rakshasa not grappled.

Blocked from a direct line to the rakshasa by Emerion and Varlis, Heather waits to cast a spell. Holding action.

The tentacles can't seem to grab hold of the elusive thing. Still they distract him and he finally seems to realize the threat they pose. He tries to push through the gap between Emerion and Varlis, but the big bounty hunter bars the way.

Acrobatics to avoid AoO : 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 Varlis take an AoO. Then I'll see what Heather does and check the R's attacks.

Repeat Varlis take an AoO.

Rapier, Fervor, Haste, Rage AoO: 1d20 + 16 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 16 + 2 + 1 = 25.... damage: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9

Varlis misses his AoO. I posted a go before but its gone, hits AC23 again.

Survivor's Salvation

Heather intones more arcane words, a pattern easily recognizable to Emerion now. With impeccable placement, grey sticky strands surround the Rakshasa but leave Emerion and Varlis free.

Web. No SR. Save 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31 1d100 ⇒ 5

Miraculously the rakshasa avoids being caught again. He stares down at the rents left by Varlis' greatsword and the punctures of Emerion's rapier.

"You may have bested me, but you won't defeat the others. We will devour Korvosa. The tiger Bahor will rule instead of your Crimson Whore."

Again he returns to the attack, striking at Emerion.
