Survivor's Salvation

I was working off memory last night. One amendment to my post, Heather's ray struck Varlis' opponent.

The sudden change from defense to offense surprises Varlis' foe. At least the bounty hunter surmises so by the pause in its ferocious attack, a pause that gives him opportunity to shear its swordarm at the shoulder. And that gives him time and room for a second cut which takes its head from its shoulders.

A little farther along the ledge and you are faced with a stoutly constructed rope bridge, or is it a ladder? It pitches down quite steeply as it stretches across the pit. Finger sized strips of wood nailed to the lower edge of each cross-plank provide plenty of traction so you don't need to worry about slipping.
