I understand Istas' perception of the situation and her sensibilities....Jeorik would have been most likely to succor Maidens, but we lost Wicht about then and I put him on stupid NPC mode. I probably should have RP'd him and FW's character better.

It was very intentional on my part (from a player's perspective) to leave that "stabilization" opportunity to Jeorik (and Wicht) for roleplay reasons. That's why I was making it so obvious that Istas cared little for saving them, particularly because she knew that:

a) She could still interrogate them via speak with dead, and...
b) She has little trust anymore that Korvosa's justice system would have truly punished Dr. Davaulus the way he deserved.

In Istas' eyes, the only true judge for the crimes of Davaulus and the cultists is Pharasma herself. And, how better to ensure that judgment is rendered than to let them pass away? The Maidens, on the other hand, were seemingly just doing their job and not active participants in spreading bloodveil. So, she would have been far more inclined to save them.

I really wish Wicht could be more involved, but I know he's super-busy with writing projects now, as well. In fact, I'm going to have to scale back a bit of my own involvement here real soon. Not only am I going to GenCon on Wednesday (thru the following Monday), but I'm still behind on my Jade Regent deadline. Paizo's giving me an extension (partly because I'm volunteering for them in Indy), and I'm going to need all of it.

From Emerion's point of view, Dr D was a mass murderer and deserved to die (and incidentally he endangered most of the people Emerion cares about, which he took very personally). Emerion's main interest in the law is not to apply it to others but to prevent it being applied (unjustly, I assure you) to him personally - and dead men don't get to spin stories that can get you into trouble or call on patronage to help make the wrong judgement.

As for the maidens, they made their choice when Deavalus confessed and ordered them to attack - and they did. As far as he is concerned, they were as complicit in the deaths of the plague victims as the so-called healers.

Heather has mixed feelings about the Maidens..on the one hand the ones in the Hospice were undoubtedly servants of whatever evil is affecting the city..on the other she would have to believe that her half sister was deeply involved in treason to think that all the Maidens are like that

We did save one maiden in the last room and there was the one that Majenko sent to sleep.I'm sure the guard can find a way to extract answers from them.

She isn't at all concerned about Davalaus or his minions..just so long as the good Doctor doesn't turn up on a flaming Motorcycle looking for revenge.

He will only do that if we cut his head off and hide it.

Keliwyn was angry and looking for revenge, and I tried to play him that way. Plus, he's just not a healer. He's still angry, btw, and ready to skewer D with his own damn rapier again if necessary.

FYI...

I'm off to GenCon tomorrow, and though I'll have internet access while I'm there, this will be a working convention for me. Very unlikely I'll get a post up for Istas. My Jade Regent deadline is also looming. So, I may be incommunicado for a bit. Please NPC the girl as you can.

Thanks,

Have a good GenCon mate

Expert 3/Slacker 4/Layabout 2

Thanks for the heads up Neil. Have a good time.

Work is beating on me again guys. I'll try to post at lunch.

Just curious - has everybody read/played/ran this adventure already, and are trying not to metagame? I have it, but have never read it and only know what I do from our game, and just wanted to same I'm having fun trying to put the pieces together.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

I neither read it nor possess it - this is all virgin territory for me!

I have it and have skimmed it..way back at the start..I know enough about Sabina to make comments on her as Heather but have never read statblocks or full plot lines

Wish List for Istas:

Spoiler:

I'm not sure how far off from WBL we are right now, but the following is just a list of possible items that might be worth having down the road. I've listed them in order of preference:

1) Breastplate - Time for an armor upgrade. Masterwork or otherwise, Istas needs to discard the studded leather and move up to something that'll hold up better in melee.

2) +1 Peacebringer Dagger - It might be fun to upgrade this weapon by adding the bane property vs. undead or tack on align weapon or bless weapon as an additional ability 1/day? If that's possible, it might make further sense to approach the bishop about assisting with enhancing the weapon. Or, alternatively, a wand of searing light could be just as effective vs. undead (and maybe less expensive, depending on the number of charges left in it).

3) Wand of Cure Light Wounds or Cure Moderate Wounds - I don't think we've picked up one of these yet. We should probably do so before venturing into the lion's den.

4) A Collection of Spell Scrolls - I'd really like to pick up some scrolls of dispel magic, lesser restoration, align weapon, cure serious wounds, summon monster III, bull's strength, and/or bear's endurance. A bunch of buffs and restoratives, basically. Just in case.

5) +1 Heavy Shield or a Caster's Shield - The former would help further the armor upgrade. Whereas, the latter would keep her current shield bonus the same, while allowing Istas to scribe and more easily use a scroll on the back of the shield during combat. At some point, I'd like to get a caster's shield. Just not sure if now is the appropriate time.

6) Wand of Disrupt Undead - This might be a better choice for Heather, but a wand of disrupt undead would be a cheap, effective weapon to take into a nest of Urgathoan cultists. It's a ray attack, so it only requires a ranged touch attack. And, it's as potent vs. undead as any other weapon.

Spell List for Istas:

Spoiler:

Here's what I'm thinking I'll have Istas prepare for the assault:

3rd - dispel magic, searing light, speak with dead (D)
2nd - defending bone, detect thoughts (D), false life, spiritual weapon
1st - cause fear (D), divine favor, hide from undead, magic stone, shield of faith
0 (at will) - guidance, resistance, stabilize, virtue

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

Emerion has about 3,500gp worth of gear, including mundane gear and cash; WBL is 10,500gp for 5th level. My wish-list would be therefore:

+1 Mithral chain shirt (2K)
+1 Ring of Protection (2K)
+1 Amulet of Natural Armour (2K)
+1 Cloak of Resistance (1K)

I'm adding a post that might link to his armour at least being upgraded by the family if Thom prefers that. A weapon upgrade would sadly take too long to arrange, but we can deal with that next level.

I'm going to have to add up Keliwyn's gear to see where he comes out, but with the recent additions from the dead doctor, he may be okay. To be honest, I have no idea what to put on hiswish list, and will have to give it some thought. The one area he is sorely lacking in is hit points, but of course, there's nothing to be done about that.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

I think I added up the gear he got of the Doc at over 12Kgp, Bill, but you might want to swap out some - like losing the rapier for simple +1 rapier, for example? Then you could add some other gear - just a suggestion, though!

So he sells the Rapier for just over 4000 and then pays 2000 to get a less effective weapon..duh???

I would imagine that most of the foes we are likely to meet are going to be human or undead..if so doing away with our most efficacious anti human weapon strikes me as a touch..well idiotic is the word I would have to use.

Heather has gone from 6k under WBL to 1.5 k Over WBL with the wand and Headband..so she needs nothing.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

The sword was 8K of the 12K he has. If he has a 10.5K limit, losing the sword (8K) for a lesser one (2K) liberates 4.5K for other equipment he may prefer to a bane effect that only works against certain foes that we may not encounter, is all I was suggesting.

and as I pointed out selling the sword only makes him 4k..leaving less than 2k to spend on that other gear.We just cant have equipment suddenly transmute into other stuff..one thing I have learnt in running AP's ..nothing is put into the treasure without good reason.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

If that were just a case of the money I would agree - but Thom said he was going to effectively use a device to get us up to full WBL, hence why the greater funds may be 'available' - I take your point about the 'bane' effect being potentially very useful, though, if we are up against a lot of humans in the coming encounters. I was merely pointing it out in case Bill had any other gear in mind to make his concept work better.

Expert 3/Slacker 4/Layabout 2

My device is the Pharasmin and the Guard opening their coffers to equip you for this job. (Lead time on a weapon will not be an issue.) And Emerion's family will be pitching him some armor per your lead-in Dabbler.

The human bane rapier is a solid weapon which will stand Kel in good stead -- sometimes. On again, off again, on again, off again. If Bill wants to swap it I guess that's OK too.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

Thanks Thom, it IS appreciated!

I think the Church of Pharasma would be shoving every scroll and potion they have to spare in our direction at the moment..after all this is a strike against the ENEMY!!!

I'm inclined to keep the gear Keliwyn has, and maybe just pickup some potions of healing, because I can't think of anything else he would really want. Also, he hasn't been terribly combat effective, and I welcome the chance for him to hold his own against some foes. At least, with him and Emerion flanking, they can maybe do some damage. Either way, with his HP, I'm always afraid he'll get taken out with one god shot from a BBEG. In which case, he duly bequeaths his rapier and mithral shirt to Emerion. :)

On another note, I'm taking a much needed vacation this week. I'll try and post from my phone, but please feel free to DMPC as needed.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

Thanks Bill! I think Em could pick up some potions too, but by and large should be OK with his wish-list as-is.

Yeah, the more I think about it, this fight it going to be nasty. From what the dead doctor seemed to imply, Lady Andaisn and Rolth(?) mean at least two big baddies, if not more. We may well experience our first casualty. I hope Jeorik is with us - we're going to need all hands on deck.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

My main concern is that we don't have anyone who can take severe damage. With Emerion I'm relying on Combat Expertise to boost his AC sufficient to avoid taking many serious hits, but we've seen how easy it is to get around that with invisibility; that leaves us a bit more vulnerable than I'd like. That said, some good armour and other protection should boost him up sufficiently that he can avoid the worst hits, especially if he can be healed up. After a few more levels he should be able to start gaining the Duelist's canny defence which will help enormously.

Just out of curiosity, how do you all price Kel's fancy new bane rapier? I have it as $2,000 for +1 and another $2,000 for the bane property. What am I missing?

As for the other stuff he took off the Doctor, I have the +1 mithral chain shirt as totaling $2100, with $1000 for the +1 and $1100 for a mithral shirt.

The Amulet of Natural Armor +1 is $2,000 gp.

The +1 bane weapon classes as a +2 weapon..so its 8K gold not the sum of the two +1's which would be 4K.

I'm going to Metagame here and state that we should by rights be 6th level by the time we get to this point..this is not a mission for 4-5 5th level characters

We have missed out some major side quests that would have given us the required XP

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

Looking at that and my hit point total, and all I can say is "Ouch!" If it's just a four-man show, we're going to be deep in the kack without Jeorik at 5th level even with the WBL gear.

Expert 3/Slacker 4/Layabout 2

Work is pounding me this week. I will be dropping my son at college Fri-Sun.

This game in particular I need to step back and do some book-keeping. Get you all geared and think about the 6th level thing.

Regarding sidequests you've missed: I felt that "all the world's meat" added nothing to Episode 1. We ad hoc leveled however so you're not really missing expereince from that.

In this episode, you're three encounters behind. One I had planned to send you on immediately after the visit to Direption, but given how you consumed your resources there, it would have been more than a tough fight. Probably a fatal fight for someone. Two others you've by-passed because as a party you've pushed the pace and haven't given me in-game calender time to insert them. A wilier DM might have pulled it off but I felt I would have had to pull out the railroad tracks to work them in.

If someone wants to try to contact Wicht and see if he's coming back, cool. If not, I have an idea.

I'll try to post when I can.

Don't worry about it. In fact, I'd encourage you to "cut some corners" by purposefully excluding some encounters and simply advancing us more quickly to be ready for the next ones. That's because PbP games move at a glacial pace. It's better to keep things moving (in story terms) by looking for the encounters that don't add much (like "All the World's Meat") and drop them in favor of those that do advance the main plot. Sure, we'll leave behind some XP and WBL upgrades. But, like you're doing now, you can adjust for that when it makes sense to do so.

I trust you. Always have. The game is most entertaining because you haven't stuck to the storyline exactly as it is. Sometimes, it's caused some consternation or worry if we're about to go into a really difficult encounter when our PCs aren't up to snuff for it. But, again, I trust you to either tweak the encounter...or to tweak our PCs...to make sure it still plays out the way the story should reasonably go.

therealthom wrote:

I'll reach out to him on Facebook. We go back a long way as PbP friends here on Paizo's boards. And, I finally put a face to a name and met him at GenCon while working the Paizo booth this year. I'll rattle his cage and see if he can come up from air (i.e., he's doing a lot of freelance now). He might favor bowing out. But, if not, he's a good player to keep.

My two cents,

I'll back you on that one, it's more interesting when you don't stick to the script!

Qadira

How's the game going chaps?

Expert 3/Slacker 4/Layabout 2

FW, my man! Good to hear from you.

The games not going as quickly as I hope. Work keeps getting in the way for me. The rest of the group is very patient. And, as always, they write very well.

I was not able to send Kenan out in a blaze of glory. It looks like he's going to be heading up Bloodveil patient care now that Dr. Davaulus is late. Unless that is, something urges him to rejoin his companions. Casual hint that the door is open if you wish to return.

On the home front -- Just dropped my boy off at college. Lots of new weekly chores on my plate in his absence. My wife is starting classes this week too. I shall be quite the household drudge for a while.

How's it with you? Publishing? Kids? The wife?

Qadira

I'm sat at the dinner table having a cup of tea with my 4 year old son looking through the Tesco catalogue circling his next Christmas presents.

We were having a super summer holiday before he starts in school proper. Then my wife and daughter got laryngitis and I have become the drudge too. It will be good to get a full nights sleep again, hopefully in a few days time.

As for the publishing, Mr Raging Swan was very pleased with my first effort especially when I stuck to his word count - the pdf is one of his top sellers. I have another small commission so that's good for the ego.

Gaming-wise, well I met up with Mr Wellard again at Paizocon UK and that weekend proved to be golden, great players and DMs for every game.

Pbps may be a little way off yet but I do pop in and have a read from time to time. Appreciate the hint and will give it some thought over the next two weeks.

Cheers

Good to hear from again FW! Hope the family get well soon.

Expert 3/Slacker 4/Layabout 2

Likewise, here's hoping for a quick recovery for the family.

Tom, with regard to the whole feint/bluff is a standard action thing, I want to make sure I have it right. As it stands, Keliwyn would have to feint (standard action) one round, and attack (standard action) the next round, since two standard actions are not allowed in the same round, is that right? Once he takes improved feint, then the feint becomes a move action, which can be combined with an attack (standard action) in one round, correct? Is that what I've been misplaying?

edit: looking at Keliwyn, I notice he only has two feats, but should have three . .
edit edit: nevermind, he has weapon focus (rapier) on my sheet, I just never put it on the profile.

FW! You should come back! We're about to have the big showdown, and need all the help we can get. C'mon, man, Kenan would want to be there! At least help us with that, and then Kenan can go off on his own to head up healing.

I believe you are correct. Dabbler's the real feinting expert. We'll hear him too.

TO be fair I encouraged you to use the feint in your solo thread because of Emerion's success with it and I told you to do it wrong.

Bill, the bad news :

Spoiler:
My memory had nerfed the Oathbow significantly. You can't have a full up version yet, but this one will scale with level. Please copy this description for your bow into your profile . And I'm sorry for the confusion.

therealthom's short Oathbow

Of elven make, this white +1 composite shortbow whispers, “Swift defeat to my enemies” in Elven when nocked and pulled. Once per day, if the archer swears aloud to slay her target (a free action), the bow's whisper becomes the shout “Death to those who have wronged me!” Against such a sworn enemy, the bow has a +3 enhancement bonus, and arrows launched from it deal an additional 1d6 points of damage (and ×4 on a critical hit instead of the normal ×3). After an enemy has been sworn, the bow is treated as only a masterwork weapon against all foes other than the sworn enemy, and the archer takes a –1 penalty on attack rolls with any weapon other than the oathbow. These bonuses and penalties last for 7 days or until the sworn enemy is slain or destroyed by the wielder of the oathbow, whichever comes first.

The oathbow may only have one sworn enemy at a time. Once the wielder swears to slay a target, he cannot make a new oath until he has slain that target or 7 days have passed. Even if the wielder slays the sworn enemy on the same day that he makes the oath, he cannot activate the oathbow's special power again until 24 hours have passed from the time of death.

Sorry, again.

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

Feinting is a standard action, unless you have the Improved Feint feat, which means you can do it as a move action. Either form leave the target flat-footed to your next attack, which means you can use sneak attack and they (sometimes) have a lower AC for you to hit.

The DC for the Bluff check is:
10 + your opponent’s base attack bonus + your opponent’s Wisdom modifier
or
10 + your opponent's Sense Motive score

It's useful, especially with Improved Feint, but that only allows you one attack, in most circumstances it's actually better to full-attack if you have multiple attacks.

Please don't sweat the bow, Tom. I feel like Keliwyn hit the jackpot with that rapier, and he's already ahead of the curve for WBL. Toning it down a bit is fine, or if you would rather swap it for something else, that's cool by me, too. Keliwyn's most powerful sneak attacking humans with the new rapier, and I haven't really played him with a bow at all, I believe. I also don't want him to be overpowered compared to the others. FWIW, I was actually considering it as a loan from the ambassador for the fight to come, to be returned later.

As for the elixir of invigoration, what does that do?

Expert 3/Slacker 4/Layabout 2

Thanks, Bill.

The elixir is a mystery item.

Hey, what's the forecast down there for Irene? You doing anything special?

Neil, you're probably just getting a lot of rain, huh? Or will it be worse than that in the Caroline highlands? Any family down on the coast?

They're telling us Irene will be a tropical storm by the time it hits Boston.

Ooph. It's been a nutty week. We've had aftershocks from the earthquake the last two nights, and now we have to batten down the hatches for Irene. We're just planning on laying low, and maybe sleeping in the basement since our house is surrounded by large trees. I'm more concerned for my in-laws, at the Jersey shore, and my folks and my brother and his family, who are all on Long Island. It sounds like they're going to get it worse than us.
