This is the sentence that I object to:

I don't like being able to drop inflict spells in for the domain spell. To me it violates the whole metagame premise that the domain spells are for flavor, and the in game premise that a diety wants his clerics to have a certain flare. I am fully prepared to accept spontaneous domain casting without that sentence.

Iñigo does not intend to place inflict spells in the domain slots. Hence, I don't have any problem with that caveat.

I admit that I missed the 1/day and 1 minute limits on the spell. You're right this is basically a one encounter feat. That goes a long way toward making it more palatable. Do you agree that the bonus is either all attack or all AC?

Yes, it is either all attack or all AC. Otherwise, it would really be overpowered.

You never know... :D

Wow. I thought you had come up with Julistar and the S&M queen on your own. Are there any other good back-ground flavor bits in there?

Julistar has an entire team at his beck and call (with full stats at 6th level). One member is a traitor to the Pathfinders. Moreover, it is possible to encounter Julistar researching the runelords in Varisia, as part of some archeological expedition.

Keliwyn looks good. I didn't count skill points, did you include my bonus points? Where?

One thing I should mention to everyone about knowledge (local). In my mind, it applies mostly to your "home". So where you've been living or grew up. For almost everyone that will be Korvosa and all is well.

Keliwyn looks like a special case. He might get full use in Mierani and Korvosa. Inigo (how do you get the tilda on top of the n?) also looks like a dual location bonus applies.

Wicht's character, whose name I forget at present (sorry), will be at some disadvantage, at least initially, because he's from away.

I think I put those points into know(local), if my memory is correct, and I passed on the bonus feat from the RotRL PG because none of them felt right for the PC. I'll take a look at the CotCT PG when that comes out in the next few weeks.

Now that Ghost is out of the picture, do we know Keliwyn? It seems we, or at least I, still might.

That's fine with me, if it's fine with Thom. Keliwyn, to me, is a social schmoozer type who knows a lot of people and has a network of folks that he may occassionally pay for information or various tasks, both shady and mundane.

Sounds like you might actually be more likely to know Darthen, then. Darvyl doesn't offer much other than muscle. Well, and wagon repair. Actually, his K:Local(Korvosa) is maxed out at a mighty +4, so that might be of some use.

Obviously at a disadvantage if the DM finds him forgetable ;)

But I trust Jeorik shall earn his stripes and go down as legend.

Provided nothing eats him first of course.

Thom, I used the six (6) additional skill points you gave to put 2 ranks in Knowledge (history) and 4 ranks in Profession (chef) or (iron chef), whichever you prefer.

Hey, cooking is very relaxing after a hard day of burning the infidels and flaying the heretics. Or so I heard....

Oh, which reminds me. Can you give me a list of 5 key contacts Keliwyn has in the city? Just a sentence or two. Name , occupation, relationship.

My friend the necromancer gave me a background/idea for his character, then left to visit his parents for Christmas. I'll call him this weekend to iron out his character. I think everyone else is good to go.

Will do, and if it's alright with you, Darvyl, Darthen & I will work out a little more about how we know each other. Suggestions, gents? My thoughts are, w/ Darvyl, at least, that they are passing acquaintances, and that Keliwyn maybe once hired him to, uh, convice someone to be a little more forth coming with some information about, say, a recent crime spree. Something along the lines of not being particularly nice, but with someone not-so-nice in the own right.

Darthen and Keliwyn:

Spoiler:
Darthen's working on starting up an information services business. I made a suggestion to him (but he's apparently away) that Darvyl might contract to him for bodyguard services occasionally. Darvyl's specializing in disarm and intimidate, so acting like a thug for a good purpose is ok.

Male Elf Rogue 6

It could well be that Keliwyn knows Darvyl from his time w/ the guard. If Darvyl lives/worked in a particularly nasty neighborhood, Keliwyn may have connections with the guard to keep times on some criminal activity. Since he's left the guard, Keliwyn may also have bought a few rounds for him when he needed company to a place where his charm wouldn't be enough or where being elf might not be welcome.

Darvyl is from a pretty bad neighborhood, yes, and has connections with some of the local undesirables. So that works fine.

The group dynamics will be interesting to see. :D

Keliwyn,

it doesn't say in your background. I kind of assumed you were a Mierani elf because of your job. True?

And yes. group dynamics should be fun. Inigo is good to go, yes?

And how do you get the tilda over the "n" ?

How long has Inigo been in town?

My friend, the necromancer assures me he'll roll his character this weekend.

Iñigo's been in Korvosa for a few years working with the Hellknight Order of the Nail, though the City Guard knows him. They even have a nickname for him, "The Hammer."

Jeorik is looking for his uncle, who he was told as a boy was training to join the order of the nail. Whether his uncle carried out this plan or not remains to be seen but it might be possible that someone would point the country boy to the man with connections to the Hellknights.

Male Human Fighter 3

Now we just need a Necromancer, and for our Urban Ranger to recover from the holiday cheer!

Male Elf Rogue 6

Here are some of Keliwyn's contacts, which I've also put in his profile. I have to say, putting this together was definitely good fun (or Big Fun, as the movies says - reference, anyone? Bueller? Bueller?)

Spoiler:

Siladil - A half-elf innkeeper, Siladil is one of Keliwyn closest friends, and indeed, Keliyn often keeps a room at his inn for extended stays or when he, ahem, needs to entertain. Keliwyn can often be found in the bar & common rooms, and is friendly with the staff, all of whom know of his interest in any noteworthy gossip.

Ked - A dwarven locksmith, Ked considers Keliwyn to be one of his few drinking bodies and respects him as someone who can appreciate fine craftsmanship, unlike most of the long legs in the city. Keliwyn has been known to challenge the dwarf with particularly tough locks and Ked, always eager to prove his skill and win a wager, is happy to ignore the broader implications of what Keliwyn might use such knowledge for.

Tralo Aderinn - An officer of the guard at one of Korvosa's main gates, Tralo is happy to have his purse lined for the occassional information regarding the comings and goings of the city.

Bunnel - A female halfling and madam to one of the more discriminating brothels in the city, "Bunny" is happy to also provide Keliwyn with information about her customers, as long as he continues to steer business her way and spread rumours about the other houses girls.

Mardelee - A daughter of one of Korvosa minor noble families, Mardelee is rough, crass, and obnoxious and would be better off wearing a veil. In short, her marriage prospects are dim and getting dimmer, and she soaks up the attention that the sophisticated Keliwyn gives her. Although her parents don't know of their secret relationship, she longs for the day when he will be able to return to his homeland, sweeping her away with him.

Inquiries in either the temple quarter or the city guard should point you to the man known as "The Hammer," who is reputed to be a violently man who has survived many an "adventure" with the Hellknights, i.e., proper collection of taxes and tithes and arrests of criminals and contract-breakers.

Just like in the past, non-payment of debts in Korvosa can land a person in debtor's prison, which should complement the impression that the city is oppressive.

Iñigo once sentenced a man to one year of hard labor for jay-walking. The man unfortunately did not survive the experience without severe mental trauma. Hey, the law may be hard but that is the law... dura lex sed lex.

Male Elf Rogue 6

Since we have established that Keliwyn, Darvyl, and Darthen all know each other, I'll post up a short description of a shared experience Keliwyn has with each, and I will be so bold as to ask that they each to the same.

My two stories will be along the lines of, "Yeah, that was that time Darvyl tagged along w/ Keliwyn to the pub down by the docks, and they got in that barfight with a bunch of sailors" and how Keliwyn has tried prying info from Darthen about Thalos.

I can see Iñigo as being part of the city guard contingent sent in to impose the proper penalty for disturbing the peace of the King. He does love combat. Moreso, than most warrior-priests.

He probably believes he's immortal. But unfortunately, he is only immoral.

EDIT: Wishing everyone "A Prosperous New Year." :D

Alright, I am sort of back now. My daughter just had a sleepover with 5 other girls. All I can say is that was interesting...

First, NPC contacts will be coming tonight.

Second, I have skimmed the comments posted so far. I will need sometime today to actually read them and work some stuff into the background.

- Having a network of snitches and other sources of information Darthen would be a good contact for Keliwyn.
- Darthen could have been used by the Keliwyn
- In service to Keliwyn he could have used Darvyl as a thug to help get some information. Which could tie into the next one.
- as was suggested before Darvyl could have been hired for security/bodyguard work.
- hmm, a few more ideas should be forth coming today.

Since I am running a security/private eye service. A thought occurred over the break. Could Darthen "rent" some space in the back room of a tavern or other establishment that seems fitting? From what I have read about professions I earn a certain amount of gold per week depending on skill level and a DC check (I need to read up on that some more today).

Welcome back.

Just to clarify, Darvyl is good-aligned, though not LG. He'd be ok with acting as a thug for the greater good (whatever the heck that means), but it's not his basic nature. The security/bodyguard is much more up his alley.

Thom: NPC info

Spoiler:

NPCs
---------
Thalos - Boss of a mid level smuggling operation in Korvosa's warehouse district. He runs several legit businesses such as several warehouses, leatherworking, and metalworking shops. He also secretly runs several house cleaning businesses that he uses to gather information from in hopes of blackmailing certain important houses. (I am kind of iffy on the house cleaning businesses, but I saw it as a way for him to try blackmail his way into the big leagues. I can drop that if you would prefer). His illegal businesses include gambling houses, rowdy taverns, prostitution, magic item laundering, "protection" services, etc.

Jonathan "The Saint" Clarke - Runs a clean Inn. He is a generous man that helps others out and has been known to provide food for the less fortunate. About a year and a half ago Darthen heard about the food service and went by a few times when times got hard. After Darthen got a couple of contracts he was able to repay The Saint for all his help. The Saint saw something in Darthen that reminded him of himself. He took Darthen in not to long ago and possibly rents a room/office to him.

Sgt. Vlad Norrell - Korvosa prison guard that likes his gambling a little to much. Darthen was able to make a substanthal debt to one of Thalos' gambling houses to disappear. The Sgt. has been forever in his debt and has helped him a couple times in the past year. Giving him access to a prisoner for questioning, information on who the city guard will be raiding next, etc.

The Nail - The Nail is a highly skilled rogue that owns an antique shop which is really a front for a major magic item blackmarket. His shop has secret entrences into the Korvosa sewers which lead to every part of the city. He also has a number of gang members that aquire his items for him. Most of which are stored in magically hidden areas in the sewers below his shop. No one has seen him enter or leave the shop. Leaving many to speculate he teleports wherever he needs to go. Darthen has done a few gather information jobs for him.

I think that would also conflict with your reason for leaving the guard. To much head bashing for no apparent reason. However you are right the bodyguard job would definitely be more in line with your character.

So for Darvyl: You have been used five or six times this year for security work which includes Bodyguard, Security detail for businesses, as well as information gathering from your contacts.

Does that sound good to you?

One last NPC contact Thom:

Spoiler:

Rukus (Half-Orc) - Rukus is a brutish half-breed, more ogre than man. He delights in hurting people especially if he is paid to. Used on more than one occasion when a need for some muscle is required. Rukus tends to fight with his bare hands enjoying the feeling of bones breaking under his onslaught.

(Name taken from PF #3 I hope that is OK.)

Ok, just so we are all on the same page:

Keliwyn: Has used Darthen for information and bodyguard services.

Darvyl: Was hired by Darthen as a bodyguard for Keliwyn on more than one occasion. Was also used to gather information from his contacts and the taverns he frequents.

Profile updated. As long as Darvyl and Keliwyn find the fluff good then I believe Darthen is complete.

Oh and Happy New Year to all of you :D

Works for me. In my mind, the three of them have a loose association, and have called upon each other in the past.

Happy New Year, all.

Game On

Guys,

my friend Dan's necromancer is 90% done. Good enough to start. His charcter's name is Arando. He is currently working as a clerk in a merchant house.

Chris Mortika, who proposed a lawyer-type bard character in the gamer connection thread, but was the seventh or eigth person to express interest and therefore, alas, too late for a player slot, has graciously agreed to play the character as an NPC in the prelude to Crimson Throne. In that capacity, he and I will be working together to run one of the story threads that will weave the characters together.

I am very excited. First to try an in-game introduction of party members to each other. Second to be working with Chris as a co-DM. These are both new ventures for me. I hope it all works out to everyone's satisfaction.

Tom
