Trey is relieved once the Vampire left. his presence made her nervous. she Thanked Sarenrae for the strength and wisdom to come to a good decision.

but still his existance will have to be reported to the church.

great another quest to complete my ordination, at this rate I'll be an elder before I'm ordained

Going to examine the notes, Trey soon realizes that there is probably sufficient information here to end the pluage of the city.

Still trey can't help but wonder why? and the involvement of the Queen's physicians? could there be more players in this plot? These thoughts remain with Trey until later. for now there are people in need of help and these notes couls be of value in their treatment.

I need to make sure these notes are brought to the church. and then a proper system of care can be administered to heal the people. I need to return upstairs to those we saved, make sure all is in order. and inform them of our success. I recommend that the exact nature of what we found not be told, at least not yet. I suggest we consult the church first. they are people I can fully trust.

Whoops, I must have been typing while you posted, Ty. Ah well. To make sure we are all on the same page since this has been a long dungeon - you also did not explore the upper floor of the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden. If anyone, including Ty, would like to visit before you step outside, I will add the details.

Typhon - Outside the Hospice

It is still night as Typhon creeps through the dark rooms of the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden and notes that no one remains inside. Sneaking near the front window, he overhears a conversation between the commanding female voice and a muffled male voice. "By the orders of the Gray Maidens! Go back inside the Hospice. Get back to treating patients." the female voice orders.

"I don't take orders from the likes of you! I'm not going back in their until Doctor Davaulus makes me!" the muffled voice hisses.

Deciding that the front door would make his exit obvious, Typhon sneaks to the rear loading docks. Here, the exit is abandoned, as is the sewer entrance. After leaving the smoking pot behind, Typhon rapidly scales the outside of the brick building onto the roof of the second floor. Dawn must be nearing - the sky is faintly gray in the east. Gathered in the street, a crowd mutters and grumbles. Several Korvosans infected with blood veil lie on makeshift beds - piles of ratty blankets - in the street. Three Gray Maidens and a Queen's Physician stand at the front door. A cluster of two dozen Korvosans stands around them. While Typhon cannot hear their words, their begging gestures and pitiful tones sound as if they are asking to be let in for treatment, while the Gray Maidens are turning them away.

The crowd falls silent at the Dark Owl's words and stare at the roof in amazement. Most of the common citizens draw back. One of the Gray barks "Do not listen to the fool on the roof. The Doctors and Gray Maidens are here to help you. Now line up!" But the Dark Owl's words have the desired effect. Several of the Korvosans slowly retreat into the shadows. One flees, breaking out into a run. The remaining five citizens mils about the front of the hospice nervously, unsure if they should heed the words of the wise owl or listen to the authorities who might be able to cure their disease.

Typhon can hear the tromp of several booted feet marching in formation a few blocks away.

Inside the Hospice - the Cells
The Varisian man who had been restrained on the table remains there, unconscious. Trey realizes that while he will live, he is not currently in a state to walk and will take some healing - mundane or divine - to awaken. He is unconscious at 0 HP

You arrive back with the Varisian captives in the area with the beds and cells. Irini is barely maintaining control when you return.

"We've got to wait for Sister Trey ! She'll show us the safe way out!" Irini insists, using her body to block the door leading to the exit.

"Bah!" a man retorts. "I'm going home to my family. If you won't let us leave, we should execute these scum bags!" He sneers at the bodies of Rolth and Doctor Davaulus, who have been thoroughly bound and gagged. He walks over and kicks Rolth's unconscious form. "After what they did to us, they deserves worse than death!"

With the healing energy, the man on the table groans and awakens. "Ruuan! He's alive!" Several of the Varisians murmur. Ruuan rubs his wrists, where the restraints cut into him. But the bruises and scrapes are gone. Puzzled, he looks around. His panicked voice reveals his distress. "Where... where am I? The masquerade... Where is Lord Carowyn?" His eyes dart from Trey to Bosch to the crowd gathered in the dank hospital basement.

Irini smiles at Trey and Bosch appreciatively. The captive Varisians calm down at Trey's words. They quietly cluster behind Trey and Bosch, ready to follow them out of the horrible dungeon, back up to the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden and back to their normal lives that do not involve being coerced into secret experiments in a hidden basement.

"Want us to carry these guys?" A brawny man steps forward, pointing at Rolth and Dr. Davaulus. He beckons forward another strong man. "C'mon Zabo. Let's haul these guys up for Lady Trey and her friends."

Zabo and his friend double check Rolth and Dr. Davaulus's bonds and gags, retying them tightly. It takes two trips in the elevator, even with everyone crowding close together. Bosch leads the way and waits with a group on the ground floor of the Hospice while Trey brings up the remaining Varisian prisoners.

Smoke filling the ground floor. Anyone there can barely see their hand in front of their face. Bosch, Trey, Tessa, and Yrsa recall there are several entrances to the building - the front door on the south side of the building, the loading bay doors at the north, the sewer entrance in the loading room, and there could be a roof entrance on the second floor.

From the rooftops, Typhon see the rest of the sick Korvosans scatter. The Queens Physicians and Gray Maidens are arguing at the front of the building. From his new vantage point, Typhon sees the unmistakable red-plumed helms of a new squad of Gray Maidens headed towards the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden. He cannot see his friends outside yet, but he can see wisps of smoke escaping from underneath the loading dock doors at the rear of the building.

Bosch grabs arms with the others so no one gets lost in the smoke.

"Chain up, no one gets separated," He orders, and begins leading the others back to the sewer entrance. Avoiding the obvious exits served a four purposes. Firstly, it insured that the rescued patients would not be simply folded back into the care of the physicians and silenced. Secondly, it made sure their captives would not be lost to those same hands. Thirdly, it would embarrass the Gray Maidens and make them look incompetent in the eyes of the public. Finally, his people were too drained to back him up should he need to stare down the Maidens. Ty had already sewn the seeds of discord in the public.

"Trey, when we get out of here, can you go to your temple and gather some healers? We don't know how bad these infected are, or how many. Yrsa, you're on rear guard, warn me if anything nasty sneaks up behind us in the sewers."

Map of Korvosa | Encounter Map

Of all the people you rescued, you have a group of eight Varisians. None have blood veil. As Arkminos Ramoska revealed, they have a strange immunity to the disease. Ruuan Mirukova was the only one in a sorry state - he was Dr. Rolth's current experimental subject. They link hands as Bosch requests and quietly, but nervously, follow him and Trey back through the thick mist filling the Hospice, to the sewer entrance. "Where are you taking us?" Irini asks softly. Her dark eyes are wide and cautious as she peers into the darkness of the sewer below. The group waits for an answer, intimidated by the thought of entering the sewer, but knowing that Bosch and Trey have proven to be good leaders so far.

Two of the Varisians are lugging Rolth and Dr. Davaulus, their limp, unconscious forms draped unceremoniously over the men's shoulders. They follow at the end of the line.

Dalvun, the stableboy in the service of the Sable Company Marines, and old Mr. Hanch, a Korvosan cobbler are also among the group. The only two non-Varisians, they are somewhat weakened by blood veil, but those in good condition help them along, guiding them and helping them not to trip over the beds, equipment, and other debris hidden in the fog.

The group listens to the wisdom of Trey and Bosch and follows you into the sewers. Trey's assistance is greatly appreciated by the sick as they hobble through the sewer muck. Following Bosch through the sewer, they speak softly only to help guide one another through the darkness.

Eye in the sky
From his vantage point, Typhon can now see the squad of Gray Maidens reaching the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden. Although he cannot hear them, he can tell they are talking to the Gray Maiden and Physicians. After a few minutes, he sees them pointing at the building, and three of them run east, away from it and towards the Jeggare River, carrying something in their arms.

A few more fretful minutes pass before Typhon is able to make out the scene a few blocks from the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden, where the wagon and horses wait, exactly as you left them.

Bosch and Roscoe climb out of the sewer grate, exactly where they entered several hours earlier. They are followed by the six Varisians, Ruuan, Mr. Hanch, Dalvun, the unconscious Dr. Davaulus, and Rolth, and finally, Tessa, Trey, and Yrsa.

The rescued victims appear surprised. "I had no idea the sewers went so many places," Irini shudders.

Ruaan looks around in the dark alleyway, then at Bosch and Trey, as if asking permission. "Can I go see my sister now?"

"Hey, you've even got a wagon. We can leave Davaulus and Rolth with you and head home!" Zabo adds. He and his companion heave the two evildoers into the back of the cart. After being lugged through the sewers, they have collected more much sewer muck than you would have expected since they were being carried. He turns towards the gathered Varisians. "Most of you live in Trail's End, right? We can all go together."

Irini also glances to Trey and Bosch for direction. You notice she is ready to support whatever Trey suggests, even if it is not what the other Varisians want.

Trail's End is #10 on the map of Korvosa, where you met Brienne, Grau Soldado's sick niece a few days ago.

Several different opinions are voiced."I'd rather just give out justice right here. But if we can make sure them two hang for what they did to us, then I'll follow you to Magnimar if I have to," the burly Zabo says.

Ruuan chimes in. "My sister must be worried sick. I would like to go home, but I owe my life to you and will do as you ask." He looks at the others around him. Softly, he adds "We all owe you our lives." Old Mr Hanch nods in agreement, even though his slumped posture and the dark circles under his eyes show his exhaustion.

"Perhaps if many of us went and told about the horrible things that happened, the Guard would believe us," Irini says.

Three of the Varisians look at Bosch with suspicion. "The Citadel? What has the Guard ever done for us? They'd be happy to lock up a bunch of dirty, thieving Sczarni smugglers who've come to tattle on the Queenie's doctors." The other two who did not speak chuckle nervously at the last bit about dirty, thieving smugglers. "Miss Trey is right. We should just go on home," another adds quickly.

The nighttime journey to Citadel Volshynek is quiet and uneventful. Although you keep your eyes peeled for Gray Maidens, street toughs, and other threats, you do not come across a single person. The only sounds come from the horses' hooves ringing on the cobblestones and the wagon creaking. The people you have rescued rest in the wagon or walk behind it, silently reflecting on the night's events.

After about fifteen minutes of walking, the imposing tower of the Citadel looms overhead. A single guard stands at the gate, which is barred and shut. You vaguely recognize her, recalling that this young, inexperienced guard with black hair and large blue eyes is Guard Jarema. "Good evening," she says, recognizing you from your many visits to Field Marshall Kroft. Her eyes grow even wider when she notices you've brought several people with you. "Let me wake the Field Marshall. Come in."

Jarema clumsily lifts the bar and opens the heavy Citadel gate, ushering you inside the courtyard, and then into the foyer of the Citadel itself. "I'll be right back," she promises as she leaves the room and runs up the stairs.

Barely five minutes later, Jarema returns with Field Marshall Cressida Kroft. Cressida's brown hair is tousled, and dark circles ring her eyes. Instead of her usual red-painted armor, she wears a black robe. Despite her appearance of having just woken, she is already alert and composed. "Guard Jarema, go back to your post. Let no one enter the Citadel. If you must, tell them I am asleep and their business must wait until morning."

"Yes Field Marshall." Jarema salutes and marches back to the citadel gate. Kroft points at the various benches and chairs scattered in the foyer for anyone to sit, then looks over the group. "Although I am glad to see all of you, the timing of your arrival means that you are not bearing good news. Please report."

Zabo seems about to say something, but Irini hushes him. Everyone looks to Yrsa, Typhon, Tessa, Trey, and Bosch to answer.

Trey listened to the rports. She was not as accostomed to these dealings as the others. she certainly did not have the connections that the others have, but she hoped that would change in the future.

Trey steps forward, pushing aside her insecurities, something she needed to learn if she was ever to complete her ordination.

Excuse me, but I fear that this is only a small piece of something larger. there is the issue of the infected rats being shipped in and not any accidental infestation, but a deliberate and intentional introduction. couple that with the plauge being modified with the full knowledge and consent of the Queen's physicians.

She stops to think hoping both that her report is true but at the same time wishing it was not.

The presence of a cult is possibly only a symtom or a clue of a much larger problem.

As Bosch completes his report, Cressida's expresion hardens with worry. "Let us have this conversation somewhere more private." Silently, she leads you down a wooden stairwell, into the basement of the Citadel. Torches provide flickering light, illuminating mundane supplies from miles of neatly coiled ropes to spare targets for archery practice. To the side, Cressida opens an unremarkable wooden door.

The walls of the room behind it have dull, gray metal walls. Bosch recognizes it immediately as lead. Entering the room, Tessa can feel the strange aura of the lead walls, altering and distorting the magical power that flows through all things. Trey notices that her connection with Sarenrae is still there, though dimmed slightly, the way light fades when a cloud crosses in front of the sun. The room is eerily silent, and after a moment, you realize that no sound is entering the room from outside. It is completely sound proof. Several wooden chairs are scattered around a round table large enough for ten or twelve.

Cressida explains as she takes a seat in a chair, rubbing her forehead wearily. "While I do not think we are being observed, using this room should become a habit for us. It blocks magical communications and spying, and a magical spell mutes all sounds coming out so that no one can stand at the door and hear inside."

Discussing Queen Ileosa:
Cressida nods at Typhon. "Your phrase is a good likeness of the situation. Yet the street sweeper's cart is dragging all of Korvosa along with it. And so I have no intention of getting out of it until the rest are saved. I think we have two ways of avoiding whatever end waits for us at the bottom of this greased hill. We convince the rest of the city to get out of the cart. Or we find the one person who can stop the driver. Seneschal Neolandus Kalepopolis is missing. Legally, the Seneschal is the only person who can remove Korvosa's king or queen from power. If we can find him, he could declare the Queen unfit for her duties and arrest her. Neolandus is a good man. He will help us fix this mess. But he has not shown his face in weeks, which is not a good sign."

Grimly, Field Marshall Kroft adds "And in the worst case, if it is proved that the current seneschal is dead, the Field Marshall of the Guard appoints his replacement. I hope this is not the situation, but we must consider the possibility."

On the subject of blood veil:
"To continue the likeness, our cart is on fire at the moment. Blood veil burns through the streets. Everyone is more concerned with that immediate danger than whatever awaits us down the road. Did you find anything that could help with stopping the plague? Perhaps the two prisoners that you captured would know more about it if they also had some role in spreading it. Did they have any sort of potions or remedies or even equipment for manufacturing a remedy?"

There is a lot of talking here, so I'm trying to divide it into two subjects 1. general discussion of Queen Ileosa's treachery and 2. the direct threat of the blood veil plague. Hopefully we can talk through both at once without too much confusion. Please jump in wherever you'd like!

Do you want the people that you rescued to accompany you to discuss these things with Field Marshall Kroft? I left it vague so we can go with whichever one you prefer.

" Irini, take the others home for now. Remember keep this to yourselves. The wrong word to the wrong people right now, could get a lot of people hanged! Or maybe you should go to Trey's church.... I dunno. Trey?"
On the Queen
"We should definitely find this Neolandus guy! If he can remove the Queen from power it might fix a lot. Do we have any clues as to where he went to ground?"

On the Blood Veil
"I don't know what to make of it, but we recovered those two 'doctors' and that vampire guy's notes. Hopefully someone can make sense of that stuff and maybe find a cure. There was a lot of weird stuff in the Hospice, looked more like foul purposes than curing equipment to me though."

Queen
"The last place Neolandus was seen was in Castle Korvosa, where he does most of his duties that deal with the day to day tasks of running the city. He hasn't been seen since King Eodred's death. As for finding him, Vencarlo Osirni has been using his network of contacts to try and find more information. We spoke a few days ago and he did not mention any new leads. But he may have turned something up in the meantime."

Blood Veil
Cressida looks pleased at Typhon's news. "Excellent work. Some of the priests and priestesses of Korvosa may be able to make sense of the information and use it to combat the blood veil. The churches of Saenrae, Abadar, and Pharasma, and will likely have at least one person who can assist."

Trey recalls that Sister Luba within the Church of Sarenrae is knowledgeable of diseases and potions and may be able to help with understanding the notes you collected from the Hospice related to blood veil.

"Having prisoners gives us some options. We can interrogate them and find out how much they will reveal or if they know of any other foul plots in store for the city. However, Queen Ileosa will likely deny whatever they say. We can legally push for some sort of public trial, which would raise public awareness on the issue, but the actual trial could take weeks. Along the same lines, I could arrange a public execution based on your testimony, without a trial. Personally, I like that option as it is fast and leaves no chance for our prisoners to escape or cause more deaths. I would enjoy seeing these murderers put to justice quickly for what they have done." An angry glint in Cressida's eyes show a hint of her fury at Dr Devaulus and Rolth, and their horrifying deeds.

"There is also the option of keeping this entire thing quiet. We can work on the cure, and speak nothing of the fact that the plague was intentional. I would put our prisoners to their deaths quickly and quietly. Queen Ileosa will find out what happened eventually, but we could make her take time and energy to learn all of that. It also has the benefit of making your roles more confidential. The Queen will not be pleased to learn who is disrupting her plan to plague Korvosa, and Abadar only knows what she will do when she does. I don't like this particular option as it will require us, as well as the patients that you rescued from the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden to be discreet, but it might keep you safer. Cressida looks thoughtful as she weighs the options, then looks around the table for your input.

Queen
"We should start small. Can you arrange us access to the Seneschal's home and any offices he might have had first? If we charge off to the castle, we will tip our hand early. By searching the other locations we can potentially limit the number of unfriendly eyes upon us. We may want to look into was to move around the city without attracting attention as well," Bosch paused.

"You may wish to consider candidates for his replacement, Cressida. The forces moving against our city do not do anything by half measures." It was not a pleasant consideration but it had to be made.

The Blood Veil
"An important note is that pure-blooded Varisans seem to be immune to the Blood Veil. We can cut down on wasted resources and infected responders by forming teams accordingly. Also, we have a scapegoat," Bosch said with a grin, putting a heavy hand on Ty's shoulder.

"Seems another vigilante has cropped up on the streets, no doubt inspired by Blackjack. Some kind of shapeshifting spirit of vengeance calling himself 'the Owl'. It was through this mysterious benefactor's intervention that a plot to spread the Blood Veil from within the Queen's Physicians was stymied and those responsible were brought to justice and handed off to a group of surprised guard auxiliaries. While acts of vigilantism should never be condoned, corruption should also be rooted out wherever it is found. Thankfully, this particular plot was destroyed lest the conspirators could threaten the Queen herself."

"Play up our civic pride, pin the violence on the Owl, and pretend we were fortunate enough to come in after the fact to find the parts of the conspiracy laid bare. Our findings might be a bit too comprehensive but I'd rather have the Queen chasing shadows than us."

Queen
Cressida nods. "I will get you access to Neolandus's home and offices. I suspect that since Neolandus is planning to retire in a few years, he was already in the process of grooming the leader of the Sable Company, Commandant Marcus Thalassinus for the role. It is typical for the leader of the Sable Company to become the next Seneschal, and I agree that Marcus is a good candidate. He can be rash sometimes, but he is very persistent and holds good ideals for Korvosa's future."

Blood Veil
Listening carefully to Bosch's idea, Cressida agrees. "Excellent idea, as long as you agree, Typhon. If you do, I will meet with Queen Ileosa at first light to discuss the Owl's discoveries. I suspect that later in the day, there will likely be some sort of announcement regarding the event and those involved, even if our heroes do not wish to be publicly recognized. If all goes as planned, the Gray Maidens will be searching for this mysterious Owl, while the Queen worries about who is digging into her affairs. Meanwhile, I suggest that you coordinate sharing the information on the blood veil itself with the various religious leaders of Korvosa."

Trey seemed a little at a loss, she was not up on who's who of the cities politics. her concern still centers on the Blood veil and its effect on the people.

Blood veil...

Sister Luba is the one I usually would seek when the children at the mission shelter were sick and we were short on supplies. She is very knowledgeable on diseases, I can make contact with her and the church. give her the information we have found so far.

"Sounds like we have a plan. If you have time later this week, and please stop back in so we can see how everything is progressing." Cressida smiles wearily, despite the grim situation.

"Yrsa, after hearing the full story and based on our discussion here tonight, I suggest you file your report with me when you are ready and share it with no one else at this time. Of course, that is up to your discretion, and if you feel that the Arbiters would benefit from the information, you may want to share it with the senior staff."

Wrapping up any final questions and details, Field Marshall Cressida Kroft escorts you out of the magically protected room, upstairs and into the courtyard of Citadel Volshynek. Guard Jarema stands at the gate and waves as you leave. "Field Marshall, four Gray Maidens came by just after I came back to my post. They asked to speak with you. I told them to come back in the morning. They left, but they weren't happy about it, ma'am." You overhear Jarema's report to Cressida as you exit the Citadel.

If you have any other questions or comments for Cressida, we can still address them.

It is a short walk back to your homes after such a long day. It must be only a few hours until dawn. It is hard to believe that it was just this morning when Mr. Singh suggested that you investigate the Hospice of the Blessed Maiden after his acquaintance, who owned the building, went missing. And only this evening, you set out to investigate and uncovered horrible truths about the origins of Korvosa's blood veil plague. But with the bad news came good news. Uncovering information about the plagues sources could lead to better treatment. And you have begun a dangerous game of exposing Queen Ileosa's plots while attempting to remain unknown in the shadows.

Those of you who return to the Fishery find that Kester, Bee, and Toby are sound asleep in their rooms. Roscoe quickly follows suit, sprawling on the floor like an enormous throw rug. The remainder of the night passes quietly.

The next morning is partially cloudy but pleasantly warm and a cool breeze blows in from the sea. Again, Korvosa's streets are nearly deserted. Only a few people are out, braving the danger of infection.

Bosch awakes to find Bee ready for the day. "Can we go outside today, Papa," she pleads, unhappy about being cooped up indoors

Where to? You are free to split up if you'd like.

Rising early, Ty bumbles around making coffee, tea and breakfast for everyone. Simple fare, filling if not tasty.
When everyone is awake, that is there, ( Not sure who lives there?)
" I think we need to find Corwin. He has access to divination magics, specifically Zellara's Harrow deck. She might be able to aid us on how or where to locate this Seneschal guy..."
" Maybe contact Vencarlo as well, see what he knows..."

"Yes, but stay in the yard," Bosch says ruffling the girl's hair and pushing himself out of the hammock he had taken to sleeping in. In all the mess these past couple of days, he had yet to set up a proper bedroom for himself.

"Roscoe," he starts but the big dog is already moving to keep an eye on the girl. Shrugging, Bosch joins Ty in the common room and helps himself to a bit of the prepared breakfast.

"Our last visit to Vencarlo left a slightly sour taste in my mouth but he should be able to help us all the same, I'm sure Trey can rally the city's holy men to action against the plague now," mopping up some bacon grease with a piece of toast, he yawns, still sore from the previous day's struggles. "Can't tip our hand early, let's talk to him first."

Typhon remembers that Corwin left the Fishery to research some ancient Thassilonian artifacts through a project with the Academae. One of the professors or staff there might have more details on his whereabouts. The mages of the Academae also might have expertise on diseases and equipment to manufacture some sort of alchemical creation or cure.

Bee comes back inside the Fishery a few minutes later. "Look! Pretty!" The little girl is dragging a large violet box trimmed in silver. A pink envelope is tacked to the lid. Opening the letter, you nearly gag from the overpowering scent of perfume.

Letter:

The writing in glittery blue ink with large, looping letters. All of the 'i's are dotted with hearts.

Vendra Loaggri

True to the letter, the brilliant purple box from Vendra Loaggri is filled with a rainbow of different colored makeups of all kinds from lipstick to rouge to nail polish to mascara, as well as lotions and creams. Typhon suspects that he could make pretty good disguises with all of the different items in the box, and other items look like they might actually help with certain types of aches and pains, unlike the snake oil cures Vendra was selling before.

The makeup box has enough different materials that it functions as a disguise kit, a symptom kit, soothe syrup, chill cream, and a vial of marker dye.

Bosch, when you say "Let's talk to him first," are you talking about Corwin or Vencarlo?

Reading the letter, Ty laughs and shakes his head.
" You gotta admit, she bounces back quick. This kit is pretty impressive. It could be useful... Seems she holds no ill will toward us for stopping her fake cure."
Ty says handing the letter to Bosch and watching as Bee rummages through the kit...
