HISTORY

The Karneth family was originally from Cheliax and can trace their lineage back to an order of Hellknights. Some generations ago, Lowan Karneth was attempting to arrest a local mage who was dealing in necromancy. He stumbled into a trap and was almost overwhelmed by a mass of undead. However, through some divine intervention, he was saved. Since then, Lowan dedicated himself to the will of Pharasma, believing her to be the one who saved him that day. Soon enough, he found himself traveling far and wide in search of undead to destroy in her name.

The generations passed and the Karneths had left Cheliax. They found themselves constantly traveling the region to the point where they found themselves with more Varisian blood then Chelish. Although their people were different, their goals remained the same. Each generation would receive training from the previous in the ways of the hunt, especially focusing on dispatching necromancers who would make more undead. The latest generation currently consists of Valdrezi Karneth, son of Belumando.

Valdrezi has had some years of the hunt under his belt already. In his early years, he found himelf in Kaer Maga, taking time to study. During this time, he saw a man being threatend by almost a dozen thugs. Val helped the man defend himself and scared the thugs away. The man, a local professor, was absolutely grateful. Val thought nothing of it and continued on his own way.

Years have passed since then. Val has gained a little more insight into the life of his fathers. Alone, save for his owl, Ramses, he has traveled back and forth searching for the next target. However, a few weeks ago, another bird came to visit him. This one brought him a message- the professor from years back had passed away and Val's presence was requested at his funeral in Ustalav. Knowing the infamy of the region, he found himself traveling again, this time, toward the fogs of horror.

Hey folks. Not long to go; if you're having issues with your submission that's okay. I have no problem with you making minor adjustments after the deadline. For me, I keep getting booted out of my PMs so I can't read new ones.

If you are still having trouble at/after the deadline we may use email as a stopgap measure. Let me know how you go.

Dark Archive

IE continues to be a viable (if absolute sh*t) alternative to the still non-functional Chrome for me. Despite it not working for Azure, I recommend anyone experiencing trouble accessing their account try IE.

I tried chrome and it worked for a while

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I should also add that if you are unable to create an alias for a new character, that doesn't mean you get to avoid the submission deadline. You can post a character concept right here if you need to.

Good luck folks, 20 minutes to go. : )

Love the vibe you have going on here. I have to admit though that I saw 'large bastard sword' and thought "I'm going to have to check this over a bit more carefully."

I am having trouble working out where you take your attack bonus for the bastard sword from. Let me go through my maths and you can tell me if I've made an error.

Attack Bonus = BAB + Str Bonus + Size Penalty (for an oversized weapon)

Attack Bonus = 0 + 4 + (-2) = +2

Just because Valdrezi has Exotic Weapon Proficiency that allows him to use a Medium-sized bastard sword in one hand without penalty doesn't mean he can use a Large-sized one in two hands also without penalty. It just means he doesn't cop the -4 for being non-proficient.

That's my interpretation, anyhow.

Beyond that, Exotic Weapon Proficiency has a pre-requisite of a +1 Base Attack Bonus, which an Inquisitor doesn't have until Level 2.

You also seem to have miscalculated your Knowledge skill bonuses; they should be +3 by my calculations, rather than +6.

###

Now, all that out of the way, I like the flavour you have going on. I said I didn't want any third party stuff (and that would include the trait you've selected from Wayfinder) but the trait fits well and I don't think it's unbalanced enough for me to worry about it, so I am happy to leave it in.

I know it's fairly late in the piece so I can understand why Valdrezi's backstory only touches on the high points, but I'd like to see it expanded somewhat to show me more of the family history. And if you haven't picked it up yet through my other reviews, things like 'through some divine intervention, he was saved' make me gnash my teeth in frustration. What divine intervention? What happened? Even if Valdrezi himself doesn't know for sure, tell us the story from his perspective.

On top of that what does Valdrezi's family mean to him? I'm keen to understand where he comes from and the more you can tell me about his past, the more I'm likely to actually grasp that.

Good luck!

I probably don't need to mention this given my recent postings but...

DEFINITELY keen!

Me too!

I know... I'm displaying 'split personalities'. Just making it clear, I'll be delighted to play with either of my submissions - which ever fits best.

You don't hear the word keen used enough in contemporary language. Though I suppose a certain segment of the martial-minded enjoy a blade with a keen edge. Interesting.

You are correct in that. I didn't realize that Exotic Profiency had a prerequisite. I'm currently changing to Martial Weapon Profiency (Greatsword).

cynarion wrote:

The reason for +6 total is thanks to Monster Lore:

Monster Lore (Ex): The inquisitor adds her Wisdom modifier on Knowledge skill checks in addition to her Intelligence modifier, when making skill checks to identify the abilities and weaknesses of creatures.

Well, Val actually doesn't know what exactly happened to his great, great, great-grandfather. That's just the story as he knows it. In actuality, the undead were stopped thanks to Hide from Undead spell cast by a cleric of Asmodeus in disguise who was also part of the raid on the necromancer's keep. Lowan assumed it to be the work of Pharasma and got to work for her.

As the generations passed, She took notice of the Karneth's and eventually granted them her blessings, thus why Val can actually cast spells.

To him, he is just another in a line of people out to destroy undead. He never had a childhood as it was taken up training his entire life. He will actually be finding himself in Ustalav and learning what others are capable of when they aren't just dedicated to training him. He may even find friendships outside of Ramses for the first time.

I don't think my character idea would have been competitive, maybe my "Tsunderness" for gaming probably saved me some troubles...

If you want to use Anna LaVerte's basic concept for an NPC, feel free to do it.

Libby wrote:

Minus two hours and twenty minutes.

I am giving everyone (especially those who submitted late in the piece) some leeway to do a bit of editing of their character background as they respond to my reviews or come up with a new brilliant idea. How much is 'some leeway'?

You can decide that for yourself. Let me put it this way: I am much more likely to look favourably on someone who gets their edits done quickly and lets me know they're finished, or someone who tells me that they will get their edits done by a particular time and follows through with that commitment. I will likely mark down--or in some circumstances perhaps even disqualify from contention--folks who chop and change all weekend.

It all comes down to managing my expectations. Tell me what to expect, then fulfil those expectations you set up, and we'll all be fine.

Thanks for checking in so far everyone. If you start seeing PMs from me about your character (not that I've sent any yet, and probably won't for quite some time) you can assume that I have reached the point where I'm doing my final assessment and that I won't take any further changes into consideration.

Edit: also, if you don't see any PMs at all, don't stress; it just means that I don't have any outstanding questions for you. : )

Also, don't worry if there are some little niggling changes that you're wondering if you should make; the first day or two after the announcement of the successful party will be dedicated to sorting out party dynamics--which will include mechanics if required.

I *think* I've sorted the contradictions in Libby's backstory... :S

Will do equipment and spells tomorrow.

Not sure if they've fixed Private Messaging yet, should people post emails in their alias or here just in case?

Still here. Going to spend a few minutes chopping away at Walter's gear now that I feel like listing and categorizing minutiae. Time to spend some silver pieces.

3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) = 11 x 10 = 110gp. Woo hoo.

I'm still interested and my background got fixed yesterday hopefully its more to your liking. The last paragraph of the background is more for a hook for you than anything known to the character and as such you can completely ignore it if you wish.

No need to panic--if I know you're keen and you're on my shortlist, I will find a way of getting in touch with you if I feel I need to. : )

Need a longsword. Besides that, I forgot the Ustalavic Nobility trait gives me +100gp... so I have a massive amount of pocket money, because I just can't rationalize Walter running around in a chain shirt with like a heavy crossbow and a greataxe.

cynarion:
Personality of Zandu: Zandu has lived in fear most of his life, a fear of how people would react to him. This problem plagued him most of his life as he found his calling with the storm god Gozreh it gave him enough courage to find his way to the stage. Through the character of the Typhoon Lord he built up a presence of a powerful soul who could stand againist anything. He started to live his life through this character and wanted to be that way. But when he went back off the stage he was still wary of crowds. He holds back before meeting strangers and tries to study them as much as he can, like a actor figuring out a role so he can try to predict there actions before he met them. Like predicting a storm you can only judge so much by what you see and then you prepare for the worst of it. Though after every intense storm there is the calm. When he got the invite to the will reading he found it as a way to prove to himself that he has overcome his fear and that he can survive without the caravan. He wore his stage armor and weapon from his act to give him the cofidence to face the world.

Also I switched out the trait with the one Lem Longbarrow suggested, thanks for telling me about it buddy!

Let me know if I needed anything else Cynarion!
